im rewatching ep 1 and i noticed that right after rick has his "i dont see you anymore" monologue it then immediately jumps to his "five pizzas and a wedding ring" dream about michonne, which directly negates his speech.

when she sits down she says

he's need clarification cause

but she reassures him that this is just the journey, not the destination

this is his love! his pookie! his inspiration! his everything! she inspiring him even in his dreams!

at the end, it becomes a nightmare again cause he cant sustain this mentality without her. without her strength and reassurance that this is a fight they can and will win!

this is how we know our rick is still in there. they broke him, but they didnt change him. he just cant let himself believe it since its just him against an army. but with michonne...they can do anything together!

even in episode 1 they were telling us that rick isn't completely lost. they had to build it up tho. great storytelling!
