oh my fucking god i've got it. nancy measures intelligence very specifically, with grades and stuff like that, hence the "you're a douchebag(? i cant remember what it was specifically), steve harrington" because he doesn't study or anything and he's 'dumb' in the academic sense, and then there's also her brother who is very smart academically so i assume she learnt from a young age that being smart meant being good with school so that's why she tries so hard to study but it's only in season 4 when her view of that starts to change. she's in the library with robin and robin is acting a little dorky to her (bc autistic coding) and so she's not enthusiastic to talk with her and stuff but then when robin presents 'the weekly watcher', her look is like. "wait. that's actually smart. you're actually smart." and so she starts to treat robin more as an equal because she realizes there are other forms of intelligence !!!! you guys !!! i cracked it !!!
