MOGAI

Here's a bit of LGBT history that happened right here on Tumblr. MOGAI was an attempt to rebrand and expand the community by being accepting of all labels and finding any that have been ignored by society.

In late 2013 early 2014 some LGBT youths here on tumblr realized something about the community name. The official acronym has been expanding to keep itself as inclusive as possible, but the issue is that it doesn't seem to stop. At time of writing the full acronym is LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning/queer, intersex, and asexual). The "+" is either everyone else, or HIV positive people depending on who you ask. As far as inclusion goes, the acronym does a fair job, but is not fully inclusive. There are variations that are longer and/or with a different order that includes pansexual, two-spirited, and straight allies. I don't think that last group includes themselves in the community.

The biggest issue with the acronym is that it is difficult to use in conversation. Most people shorten it to just the first four letters and maybe the plus, others use a more regal form of gay, and others more are using queer as a substitute. That last one is the most common, hell it's the one I use, but it does have a complicated history. It is in fact a reclaimed slur that the community has been working on since Stonewall, I'd argue that the effort has been largely successful. These days it's hard to find someone who genuinely uses it as a slur, they instead use the f slur for hateful purposes. The last example I saw of it being used as a slur was ten years ago when I was first coming out of the closet, in a video that was already a few years old.

Tangent aside, back to the early 2010's. A group of teenagers on this site was discussing the above two issues mentioned and thought that maybe it's time to come up with a new acronym that is not only short, but wonderfully inclusive without the baggage that queer has. After a short debate they landed on MOGAI (marginalized orientations gender alignments and intersex). Let me just say that for a group of teenagers online, this acronym is absolutely wonderful, it addresses all major categories while being easy to understand say and spell. It is also wonderfully inclusive, it's hard to feel left out with a name like that. I want to reiterate that this was made in a group brainstorming session.

After that the MOGAI community was born and given a flag. Real quick that flag at the top is in fact the official MOGAI flag, and I understand what they're trying to do with the symbolism and all, but did it have to be a color wheel. The original post behind the flag was lost, but the flag survived, so official meanings were lost.

Now something else that was noted by the newly formed MOGAI community was that humans are just insanely diverse. Here's where things started going downhill, people tried to name every variation they could possibly think of. Every way one person would express their sexual orientation or gender identity would be categorized, with a free flag included with each one. Variations included terms that already had a name that just wasn't mainstream yet, terms that are super specific to one or two people, or terms for what's just gender dysphoria but the poster is in denial, some un-cracked eggs that are on the verge of hatching.

The part about categorizing everything is also where a lot of trolls come in. Yeah MOGAI was famously the target of harassment and ridicule, and it is also where the "I identify as an attack helicopter" meme comes from. A lot of people decided that teenagers exploring their identities on the internet was super cringe and worth cyberbullying. Don't worry, the arrow of cringe is now pointing in their direction now for that exact behavior.

The many categories mixed in with the public harassment has led to MOGAI being just another chapter in online LGBT history. Despite its promise, it did not substitute the acronym and has instead lost to queer as an alternative. MOGAI is mostly forgotten, but it does have an impact that can be seen. Specifically in gender identity, it pushed the conversation from gender being a binary to being a spectrum in the mainstream. Non-binary identities did in fact exist before MOGAI and have for as long as humans have existed, but it forced the idea back into the mainstream and now most of us know someone who's non-binary in some way.

With all that said here's to MOGAI, for all its flaws it forced us to have a conversation!

Off topic, you sound like a rad person - this was actually pretty funny to read. Since you gave me a wide fandom selection, I chose the top five people you’d click with! Each of these people are very different, but I think they all like you for different reasons and in some ways you help bring out different sides of them. Also, I chose two for Ouran because you’d do really well with Hikaru and Haruhi, especially with Haruhi given the fact you’re genderfluid and she’d be 100% supportive since in some ways she is too.

While Hikaru tolerates cats, he finds it amusing how much you love them. If you ever suggested the fact you wanted one - but were not able to own one - he’d find a way to get you one, but to make it subtle, as he would be confused of his feelings for you at first. Kaoru would be the one to spot the fact that he was growing more and more fond of you first, which would only mean that he’d give the two of you more time to be alone together. Hikaru isn’t exactly the type to shower people in gifts, but he likes to fulfill your needs because it’s his way of showing he cares, since he’s knew to this whole ‘liking people other than his brother’ thing.

Considering dinosaurs and sharks were never in the education criteria at schools, he didn’t know a whole lot about either of the creatures. He just knew the basics - so the fact you liked them so much was a bit strange to him, but he found himself asking more questions about the creatures. He wanted to know just about everything about them, so that he could understand you more. If you liked them, then he obviously should like them as well. Your opinion matters greatly to him.

Video games are also something Hikaru is new to, but once he found out what they actually were, he’d murmur something like, “So, that’s what commoners do for fun since they can’t afford to do anything else?” but he’d gladly oblige in playing with you. He could become absorbed in them the same you were, he soon found out why you liked them so much, and that’s what a lot of your conversations consisted of. When playing against you, he’d tease you mercilessly if he won, but if you on the other hand one, he’d have to hand it to you. As said before, he’s not great at compliments since he’s very straightforward and to the point, but he’d become more fond of telling you how impressed he was with you, since it felt as though you were connecting more with him when you were playing.

You and Hikaru also share a similar sense of humor - though, he however, wouldn’t call it shitty - he would often times find memes/jokes online and make a habit of showing them to you so that the two of you could laugh together. He found himself finding jokes that matched your sense of humor, just so that he could see you smiling - because he found it so beautiful when he did.

When he worked up the courage to confess, it would be straight to the point but very sweet. You two are very compatible with each other.

Despite the fact that L is too busy to own a critter of his own, he really enjoys cats. The way how most of them are very calm and are quick to just curl up in his lap and snuggle him is something he really likes about them, which is why they’re his favorite animal. When he found out that you shared the same sense of love for cats, he would encourage you to either get a cat if you didn’t already own one, or bring your own around as often as possible. In some ways, he’d use the cat to be an excuse to see you. After all, if the cat was there, you were bound to be as well, which made him oddly very happy.

Your presence was something he wanted to be engulfed by - he enjoyed the fact that you were tall, as half the time he looks down at whoever he’s talking to, but to be around someone of similar height made him feel as if he was speaking to an adult for once. The fact you are asexual would come as a relief to him, as he doesn’t really seem like the type to be that interested in sex. If the topic was ever brought up, he would make it clear that he was not at all interested in doing anything of the sort unless somehow you were interested in it. Which was not who you were, and he loved you for it.

Let’s just say, the topic would’ve never been brought up again. He made it clear he didn’t mind.

He liked to watch you for hours on end drawing. Even if they were simple doodles, he’d inquire on how you had that ability. The boy doesn’t draw much himself - or at all really - but since you were gifted with such an ability it came as a wonder to him. Plus, when he got to watch you draw, he could stare at you, and if you ever inquired on why, he could explain he was just watching you draw. Truly, he was watching you.

Your sense of humor went along with his perfectly - as most of the things he finds funny are nowhere near what most people get a laugh out of. When he watched as you both died laughing at certain topics, he soon found himself infatuated by how you looked when you were giggling away. The way your face lit up, your eyes wide as tears formed, the cheeky grin pulled tight on your cheeks - it was all too much for him. You would soon find him in your presence quite a lot, and he’d try to get to see that same expression as often as possible by making jokes that the two of you could laugh about.

When he found out your love for mystery books, he practically found as many possible that would be of your liking, and gave them to you. He put it as, “Just found them around, dearie, and since you liked them… Couldn’t think of anyone better to take them!”, for the most part, that was true as in his eyes you were the best person to receive books of his, but they weren’t exactly lying around. No, he took the time to ensure you were gifted with only the best of the best.

Not to mention, having the connections that he does, he would have a plentiful amount of mystery stories of his own to tell you about. He would spend hours on end entertaining you with as many tales as possible - throwing in a few jokes in there as well to get you to smile - but when he saw how entranced you got when he told you such stories, he basically begged the people who entered his shop for new mysteries to tell you all about.

The post apocalyptic books you read were something he would’ve liked as well, since he likes how morbid some of them can be. He finds them rather entertaining, and will regularly ask of you to read him a few books here and there while he fashions up bodies, just so he can hear your beautiful voice.

Honoka, similar to you, really likes dinosaurs because she likes how ferocious and strange looking they must’ve been. She likes going to museums to look at the bones found, and when she found out that you share the same interest, she began dragging you along as well. She was however, really bad at keeping track of the names of each of the dinosaurs, but when she had you along there with her, she tried to impress you with her knowledge. Like most things she did, that backfired because many of the species she mixed up, but she’d always giggle and tell you she was a tad forgetful. Every time the two of you went to the museums, afterward she’d take you to the gift shop and buy as many souvenirs for you as possible. If you ever got embarrassed about it, she’d explain that she enjoys spoiling you, and that it was the least she could do after dragging you along with her.

She loved your personality, and the way you seemed to make her feel even happier than ever before.

Unlike you, she’s not very good at video games and at first didn’t see the point, but once she started playing with you she could not stop. She was very bad at it, and never beat you, but she always would smile and hug you each time you beat her. You were her champion after all. Playing video games soon became one of her favorite things - even though she was awful at it - but she loved it because she got to play with you, and seeing how happy it made you only made her happy.

Your love for reading is something that Haruhi shares greatly. Haruhi values reading a lot, since it helps educate her and makes her feel as if she’s closer to her goal of becoming more like her mother. Education is very important to her, so if she feels like you find it important as well, it made her happy to know that one day you both will be very successful in life. After all, the only thing Haruhi wants is for you to succeed in not only being happy, but in living a good life style. Hopefully, a life that involves her - or so that’s what she wishes.

Gender has never mattered to Haruhi; she believes that it’s nothing that should be valued or even be more than something other than what you chose. She doesn’t have any concern for looking more feminine or even more masculine, as she just thinks that’s for her to decide. When she found out you were genderfluid, it did made her happy. She normally wouldn’t think much of it - but because you both had the same beliefs it made her feel closer to you. After all, she cares very deeply about what you think due to her love for you. It made her only respect you more that you were in touch with that side of yourself.

Your anxiety was a problem Haruhi recognized quickly, so she never pushed you to open up more. She in fact would comfort you and be a soothing voice whenever you felt panic rising. She reassured you, showing that all the things you worried over were nothing to be thought twice about. Haruhi would always be there to make sure you felt comfortable at all times, and felt happy in any situation. She loves being with you and around you, so to know that you feel happy makes her feel happy.
