It took Quaritch 10 years to build the cabin and immediately after finishing it he went to get Spider or did he finish it earlier but he was waiting for the perfect moment to take him? Will there be a fragment describing exactly how the construction took place? I wonder how he found the place at all, whether he make all the furniture himself and how he moved everything up the hill
<3
I mention the construction of the cabin in a few lines here and there but I never have like, an in depth flashback scene of the process of building it, but I do have the whole process thought out so let's get into it.
So the cabin is on a secluded mountain in Colorado. Originally Spider lived in the D.C area so Quaritch took him completely across the country. Quaritch had a general idea of where he wanted to go when he first started thinking up his plan. He wanted a place that was secluded, hard to reach, and with plenty of natural resources so they could live off the land. He would have gone through a list to narrow down other locations until settling on the mountain the cabin is on and then actually going there to make sure it was as secluded and hard to reach as he originally thought. That process alone would have taken about a year as he thoroughly considered and tested every option.
Once he found the perfect spot he'd started construction using pretty basic tools, things he could easily carry up the mountain. He'd have to clear a lot of large trees first, saving them to use as construction material later, then dig up the tree stumps so he could level the ground. The cabin does have a basement, a septic system, and a water well so he'd have to dig, using small explosives to make the initial holes then shaping it how he wants. He'd use the dug up stone from this to make concrete that would be used to make the foundation of the house. Then he'd actually start building the house from the trees from earlier. Once the cabin is done, the plumbing is set up, and the electrical wiring is done (but not functional yet) he'd start making a good amount of the furniture, bed frames, desks, wardrobes, dressers, end tables, kitchen table, chairs all of that stuff. He'd also be starting their garden around this time because it takes years to actually cultivate the soil to grow good crops so he'd have to start that years in advanced to make sure they have a good source of food for when him and Spider will be living there.
This would all be a very long process made longer by his lack of heavy duty power tools and help. His team would come up to help him a few weeks at a time but they all have lives too that they can't be away from for that long without arousing suspicion and no one wants that. He'd also only be able to really work on this from mid spring to mid fall which is still a good amount of working time each year, but he wouldn't want to be away from Spider for that long. So he's in D.C watching Spider from late august when school starts to about Spider's spring break then heads back to work on the cabin.
Quaritch would take up as much as he could with every trip, so like first it'd be all the tools he needs for building and supplies he needs for surviving in the woods for months. He'd leave it all there in a safe place, so that next time he could start bringing up gardening supplies, then family photos/videos and so on. All the big stuff like the couch, mattresses, fridge, stove, etc. where airlifted there by Brown. Every member of team deja blue that could be there was there to quickly unload everything so Brown could fly away fast, then they moved everything into the house. That all happened a few months before Spider was taken so yeah he didn't waste much time. Spider was kidnapped at the end of august. Quaritch probably had everything airlifted in during the spring, took some time to get the house in order, arranging everything how he wanted, trying to make it feel homie, double checking that everything is in order, that there solar panels work, the backup generator works, the radio system he uses to talk to his squad, the water filtration system all in perfect order. Then triple checking that the basement is well stocked with enough non perishable food, water, medical supplies, and personal care items to last them both for the next decade.
Once he's 100% sure everything is perfect he goes back to D.C to watch Spider, study his routine, and fine tune his plan so he can take his son back without a single issue.
I hope that covered everything! I'm happy to answer anymore questions you might have if I missed something 💞

Esme Platt's Farm Life 1900-1920
Living Conditions:
Houses in the town might have had electricity in the 1920s and 1930s, but many on the farm still had no electricity. Kerosene lamps were used for night lighting. There was no central heating system. If families could afford it, they would use wood or coal for heating. Many rural households did not have indoor plumbing, therefore, outdoor latrines are needed. People had to bring water to the house for cooking and bathing.
At night, families would gather on battery-powered radios to listen to programs (early radios had only one headphone that needed to be coordinated), or neighbours would gather to enjoy music or games.
Tumblr media
Daily life:
In the early 20th century, farm families were very self-sufficient. Farmers were able to grow their own food, including fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat. But they also purchased flour, sugar and coffee that they could not produce themselves.
Farm work and entertainment varied around the seasons. The children usually walk/ride to school. Each member of the family has a chore. Children are responsible for chores such as feeding animals, collecting eggs or cutting wood and helping out in the fields during the summer holiday. Family fun includes trips to town, church gatherings and other social events.
1. Spring
Spring was a time for preparation. Taking care of newborn calves, lambs, pigs and horses. To prepare the soil in the spring, farmers would burn last year's corn stalks spread them on the fields as fertilizer, and plough the land (using both horses and machines)
2. Summer
Summer was the busiest time for farming and planting crops. In July, horses and large machines went from farm to farm, threshing wheat and oats. In July and August, farm families would can vegetables harvested from their gardens. To add variety to their diet, farmers also fish and hunt rabbits and other animals.
In summer, they woke up at 4 or 5 o'clock to milk four or five cows, eat breakfast then they went to do other farm work and went to bed at 9 o'clock.
Some churches would host a summer ice cream social. Families went to town more often to sell eggs and cream. When they were in town, they would visit friends or watch movies projected on white walls outside.
3. Autumn
Autumn was for preparing for winter. After the frost, farmers picked the corns by hand and stored them to dry. The corn cobs were used to feed cattle, horses and pigs. Apples and potatoes and other vegetables were canned for winter meals.
In late fall, farmers repaired barns, pig and hen houses (repairing holes and cracks to protect them against cold weather). Pigs or cattle would be slaughtered in November, then salted and smoked for winter food.
Children helped on the farm in the summer and returned to school in the fall. Elementary students usually walk one to three miles to a classroom to learn reading, spelling, calligraphy, geography, history and arithmetic. Teenagers went to high school in town.
4. Winter
The nights got longer. Morning and evening chores were done in the dark. Cows had to be milked, and horses, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens had to be watered before breakfast.
Cold and snow were no excuse for not going to school. Only illness or a snowstorm kept the children home from school.
Farm income:
According to statistics, in 1909, the average farm family's annual gross income was $1,236, and after hired labour, fertilizer, seeding, farm purchases, taxes, and other expenses, net income was $724. But the number varied by region. Because the cost of living is much lower in rural areas than in cities (rent, fuel, food were more expensive), the purchasing power of $400 income in rural areas was approximately equivalent to $600 in the city.
Tumblr media
1900-1919 was the "golden age" of American agriculture. Farming became a business rather than just a self-sustaining lifestyle. Crop yields were high, commodity prices were high, land values increased, mortgage debt declined, and farm incomes had risen. Farmers purchased modern machinery and tractors and began to use scientific farming methods to increase yields, diversify into higher-yielding crops. In 1916, worldwide demand for food rose sharply, and so did market prices. After the United States joined the war in 1917, the government encouraged farmers to produce more crops. Driven by postwar reconstruction, foreign demand for U.S. agricultural products remained strong through 1919, and prices rose to twice their pre-war levels in 1919. However, in July 1920, food exports and agricultural prices fell sharply, leading to a 20-year agricultural depression. (A crisis in farm and unemployment caused by post-war workforce saturation might have triggered Charles to become more mentally unstable and violent.)

@midnightprelude this is all your fault, a dorianders fic. This is for @30daysofdorian
Dorian x Anders, in Skyhold.
Tempted Tevinter
“Have you heard?”
Dorian changes the angle of his head slightly to listen to a former chantry sister and a former circle mage talking behind a column in the garden. They have many “formers” here now, and quite a few unusual friendships have sprouted in this strange hotbed of Skyhold. Dorian has found himself in a disturbingly nice friendship with a dalish mage, a qunari mercenary, and a former knight of the templar order, of all things. A chantry sister and a circle mage sticking their heads together in gentle familiarity is not even that unusual.
“What have I heard?”
“They got him, the rebel.”
“Which one? They’re all apostates now if you listen to the Chantry.” There is a beat of intense silence, for which Dorian can vividly imagine the scrutinizing look the mage gives his friend. “I don’t mean that I listen to the Chantry, you know that.”
The mage clears his throat and holds a dramatic pause before he reveals his knowledge. “It’s Anders, the rebel-mage who blew up the Chantry of Kirkwall.”
“Maker! I thought he was dead. How did they find him?”
“He found us, he came to the Inquisition on his own. Walked up to the gate, said who he is and asked to be let in. They didn’t believe him at first, but they called the Commander over and he recognized him.”
“By Andraste’s heart, he didn’t kill him outright?”
“Welling said the Commander went totally still. His voice was barely more than a whisper when he ordered him to be arrested.”
“When the Commander gets quiet like that —”
“— you know that he’s really angry.”
Dorian closes his book and quietly leaves his secluded corner of the garden. News like these are too interesting to keep working on old tevinter tomes. His steps take him back into the main hall, guided by the cacophony of angry voices yelling over each other. He keeps himself to the shadows, casting a light illusion spell over himself to stay hidden and studies the scene before him.
Inquisitor Lavellan sits on the floor in front of her throne, Varric stands on the step leading up to the throne and Cullen paces around them, stomping up and down the stairs. Josephine leans against the backrest of the throne, frowning at the Commander but keeping quiet. The Commander and Varric are not quite yelling, both of them aware how much Lavellan and Josephine hate yelling, but their tempers are too high to speak reasonably.
Cullen points his finger at Varric, even though he obviously speaks for Lavellan’s benefit. “He doesn’t even deny that he’s guilty, he should be put on trial.”
“And then what?” Varric yells back. “Do you know what kind of figure he is for the mages here? He’s a spirit of guidance by now, they worship him.”
“He still should be punished!” Cullen turns to Lavellan, lowering his voice a little when he catches her frown. “People died, not only in the explosion but also in the aftermath's chaos.” He turns back to Varric. “You should know that.”
Varric pinches the bridge of his nose and then looks up as if he wants to ask for help from the Maker himself. “You know, if you’d asked me maybe six or seven weeks ago, I would have agreed with you. But now, after seeing those templars...”
Tingling under his skin tells Dorian that his illusion spell is running out, and he uses the last bit of stealth to slip past the guard through the door that leads to the dungeon. The air is wet and strangely warm down here from the many hot springs that warm the castle through ingenious plumbing. He steps carefully on the wet stairs; he wouldn’t be the first one to slip here and tumble down.
The guard at the prison cells raises his eyebrow but only nods. Dorian is well known by now as belonging to the so-called inner circle and the days of him being questioned at every step as the evil magister from Tevinter are finally gone. Mostly.
He walks toward the cell with a glowing lock in front. Of course they would use a magic lock for a mage. Looking into the cell through the bars, he sees a slim figure in filthy clothes, leaning back on a stool so that his long, greasy hair sticks to the stones of the cell. Dorian wonders if the man is asleep when he suddenly speaks.
“Well, your’re not a templar.” Dark eyes turn to Dorian, studying him. “Tevinter mage, if I can guess.”
“Guessed correctly, I’m impressed. People usually go for evil magister first.”
Anders grins and Dorian is struck with the impression that all that dirt and greasy hair hides a beautiful man.
Anders touches the metal ring around his throat, a magic suppressing collar. “Can I have another guess? I owe this thing to your expertise.”
Dorian laughs out. “Correct again. I wasn’t convinced that the southern way of lacing food and water with magebane was the best way of going about suppressing magic. Magebane is nasty stuff and poisonous in the long run.”
“And we wouldn’t want to do unhealthy things to mages,” Anders growls bitterly. “I’m sure your fellow mages love you for this.”
Dorian shrugs. “I’m from Tevinter, I’m the first one to tell you of the marvelous and terrible things an angry mage can do. Ask me about time magic sometimes.”
Anders gets up from the stool and walks towards the bars. He is taller than Dorian and despite looking like he hasn’t had a decent meal in weeks, there’s an air of strength and confidence about him that has Dorian take a step back. “Why did you come here? You knew they would arrest you. The Commander seems to know you personally.”
“Curly? Oh, yes.”
Dorian snorts in surprise. “Curly? You call Cullen Curly?”
“Well, Hawke did, and Varric.”
“I must ask Varric why he never told me that.”
“Varric is here too? He just can’t stay out of shit, can he?” Anders wipes the hair from his face, leaving dark streaks on his face. “Cullen, Varric, anybody else here from Kirkwall? Merrill maybe? Dalish elf who knows too much about ancient magic she shouldn’t touch?”
Dorian pulls a handkerchief from his belt and wets it in water that springs from the wall. He hands the cloth to Anders, indicating that he should clean his face. “Never heard of a Merrill, we have Solas for that kind of job.”
Anders cleans his face, revealing a kind face with warm eyes and a cheeky grin in red stubble. “There, pretty enough for you now?”
Dorian lays his head to the side and puts his hand under his chin. “I’m afraid the unwashed hair and coat takes away from the overall effect.”
A smile spreads on Anders’ face and he uses the wet cloth to wipe over his hair, brushing it to the back of his head. The grease keeps it slicked back, and he looks surprisingly serious now, were it not for his smile. The smile makes him look young, daring even, with a livelihood about him that someone in his situation should not even have.
“You are quite beautiful,” Dorian blurts out before he can stop himself.
“Thanks.” Anders turns a bit, draping himself over the bars of his cell as if he’s on display, stretching his arm up and behind him and arching his back.
The whole pose reminds Dorian of body-slaves displaying themselves at one of the many parties he attended. Parties he loved to attend with all their pleasures. Nausea rises in him at the memories. “I would prefer if you didn’t do that,” he presses out between clenched teeth.
Anders looks at him and drops the pose, simply leaning against a bar of the gate. “Can you blame me?”
Dorian steps closer, watching Anders’ brown eyes widen. “Blame you for what?”
“I’ll tell you if you come closer.” Anders looks through the bars, his hands on either side of his face.
Dorian hesitates only a little. He’s one of the best trained mages here and the collar suppresses Anders’ magic, he isn’t a threat. Dorian takes another step closer until he stands right in front of the bars, his nose almost touching Anders’. He studies Anders’ face, the harsh lines carved into it from an equally harsh life, the warm eyes glittering with mischief.
“Closer,” Anders whispers, and when Dorian leans forward, he catches his mouth with his lips, brushing a kiss over it. He suckles on Dorian’s lower lip and then leans back. “Well.” He takes a long breath. “Can you blame me for trying to influence my jailor in my favor?”
Dorian jerks back. “I’m not your jailor.”
Anders laughs out and grabs the collar with both hands. “Certainly looks like it.”
Dorian opens his mouth for a retort when Anders’ hands begin to glow in blue, light traveling up his arms like lightning, and with high pitched noise, the collar snaps in two. Anders throws the pieces through the bars at Dorian’s feet and sits back down on the stool.
“I came here by my own will, I won’t be using magic to fight.” He leans his head back against the wet stone wall and closes his eyes. “I’ve accepted my fate and I’ll accept the judgement.”
“Fasta vass. How did you do that? It should have been impossible.” Dorian steps closer again, regardless of the danger of the unshackled mage in the cell. “Is it that spirit you merged with?”
“Justice is gone.” For the blink of an eye he looks like he is about to cry but he schools his face again. “But he left me with some kind of residue. And I was never...” He trails off, looking into the distance far beyond of his cell’s walls.
Dorian steps right up to the bars. “That’s remarkable. I need to study this, your magic.”
Turning his head, Anders grins at him. “Maybe you should talk to your inquisitor that you need me as a test subject to experiment on.”
“No!” Dorian shouts, his own reaction surprising him, the visceral recoil at this suggestion. “That’s not what I want.” In his imagination, Anders stands by his side as they study the text of an ancient book, flinging spells at each other, laughing, kissing, holding each other. The intense longing in his chest for this idea to become reality has him holding his breath in shock.
Something must have shown on his face because Anders looks at him confused. He shakes his head and leans back again. “Well, pretty jailor, please let me know soon how they’re going to kill me.”
Dorian turns around and storms out of the dungeon. Nobody will kill this man, he'll make sure of that.

Time for happy Spring and Cogg and Clive hcs now + bit of analysis. As Future Luke, Clive is very concerned about his appearance and cleanliness in general; ie getting upset his tie isn’t straight, announcing he’s wiping his feet, grossed out by snails. Obviously this can be interpreted in different ways, but I like to think this is part of Clive consciously and unconsciously playing the role of the Perfect Gentleman, not only to fool everyone into believing he’s Luke, but to cover up his own wrong-doings. He wants his plan to be perfect and one way this desire manifests is in keeping his appearance immaculate, projecting an image of spotless purity, and by association, trustworthiness. His perfection is a mask and he fears even a crooked tie could cause it to slip. And let’s not forget he discards his hat after his true identity is uncovered, revealing his unruly hair. In discarding his hat, he’s discarding the Perfect Gentleman persona.
All this to say, I like to think younger Clive is much less concerned about his appearance. He’s usually so wholly wrapped up in whatever he’s doing, he doesn’t even care. And this is where Spring and Cogg come in. So, first one. Spring gets so tired of mending Clive’s trousers, because he’s always out traipsing about and tearing them, whether he’s exploring and investigating, or else helping Cogg with maintenance and plumbing at the mansion or whatever projects he has going on in his workshop, or even helping Shipley in the gardens, that she teaches him to sew so he can mend them himself. Clive is pretty clumsy at it at first, but he slowly gets better under Spring’s tutelage.
A common sight at the mansion is Clive running about with his tie crooked, one of his shirt-tails hanging out, and his sleeves rolled up, oil stains on his trousers and dirt smudged on his face, his hair every which way. All of this gives Constance the perfect opportunity to tease him as she fixes his bangs and wipes the dirt from his dirty orphan face while he protests. Clive’s attempts at combing his hair only result in his hair becoming even messier.
My gf @chyouxart has a head-canon that Constances hires a private tutor who attempts teaching Clive etiquette. Have to add this tutor is constantly exasperated by Clive and his scrappy appearance and Clive, in turn, delights in being extra messy to annoy them. He and Cogg always have special projects they’re working on, which he’ll ditch etiquette lessons for, like fixing up an extremely ancient car with spare parts they pick up at the dump or trying to fix a leaking pipe in the manor and getting soaked. I see Cogg as Dove Manor’s handyman and jack of all trades, while Spring is the housekeeper, though she often gets caught up in Clive and Cogg’s schemes, too. Though she appears rather stern, Constance actually loves all the colorful chaos of her household and actively works to make it that way.
Imagine Clive having his school friends over and Constance sharing embarrassing pictures of him, and Cogg teasing him and ruffling his hair which Spring spent an hour combing.
Going to stop now before this post gets too long, but in short the Dove family has my entire heart and how dare you Level-5 for only allowing Clive five short years with Constance.

The Mystery of the Aussie
Investigating family history can be a time-eater. When the shelter-in-place order came down this spring, with it came a rare gift of time for me to write about my family history book experience. Just one faded black and white photo of an uncle launched my search.
“Left poor. Went to Australia. Married a White lady. Returned rich,” claimed my Mother-in-Law. I thought to myself, “Could her uncle really have left their farming village and done all that?!”
Years later my curiosity fueled a search for more of his story and clues that might lead to his descendants. How could her uncle have really traveled across Asian seas to a distant continent more than 4,000 nautical miles south of China? It was the late 1800s. Why would he leave? Did he really get rich or did Nai Nai’s childhood memory imagine it? She’s no longer here to ask. How could I find out?
Facts about this uncle were scarce. He was born in 1870. Few people were left who knew of him. A cousin gave me an email address to his cousin in Australia. That started my journey.
After occasional correspondence, asking every relative if they knew anything about him and meeting new cousins in Australia, Hong Kong, and China, I at last collected enough material for a backstory.  I studied Chinese-Australian migration. I discovered robust online resources like the National Archives of Australia and the Queensland State Archives. I joined a genealogy writing group who gave me honest feedback on my drafts. Worldwide cousins shared a few memories and photos. Each revelation was a gift. I was excited to be able to tell my family the story of a distinguished forebear.
As I worked towards a final manuscript, I investigated printing, publishing, and promoting. A six year seat-of-the-pants journey. Along the way I learned about copyrights, ISBNs, and crafting engaging book pitches to libraries and museums.

Cover of The Mystery Aussie, Pamela’s book chronicling Jan See Chin’s life.
As it turned out, Granduncle Jan See Chin’s life path really was astonishing. At the turn of the 20th Century, Jan See Chin transformed himself from an unassuming young man to a sugar cane plantation magnate. He forged a legacy of influential projects in both his adopted country of Australia as well as his own Shekki village in Kwangtung.
Times were tough. In desperation Jan See Chin’s father sent his son abroad at the of age 15 to find work and remit money home to the family.
Traveling alone on a three week voyage from Hong Kong through the South China and Coral seas, he arrived in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, at that time a Crown Colony of the British Empire. Thousands of other Chinese laborers also sought work in Australia, often scraping by in the few arduous jobs open to Chinese such as sheep herder, garden worker or laborer on the sugar cane plantations.
Living frugally, Jan See Chin sent money home but also saved to buy a small plot of land on which to grow vegetables. Along the way he met Pang Yung, a businessman from his village, who had a store in the town of Cairns in the far north part of Queensland. Pang Yung and his white British wife had two daughters. One of those daughters was named Maud. Maud and See Chin married in 1902. Their marriage partnership would thrive for 26 years as they raised 13 children.
Living economically and saving enough to purchase modest plots of farmland at discounted Crown Land Sales, See Chin and Maud gradually expanded their holdings to an incredible 3,000 acres of sugar cane plantation land. By 1915, See Chin was recognized as Australia’s biggest individual grower of cane in tropical far North Queensland.
Tumblr media
Picture of Maud See Chin, 1915
For the next 15 years, Jan See Chin and Queensland’s other Chinese cane plantation owners struggled to keep their robust cane businesses afloat amid a flood of nationalism rising up in the newly federated commonwealth of Australia. Powerful, virulent voices stoked fear of people who looked different than the ruling British citizenry. The government adopted no less than 15 official acts to intentionally disadvantage Chinese plantation owners and drive them away. The Acts penalized only the Chinese, imposing fines, withholding sugar bounties, and prohibiting them from hiring any non-White labor.
One Act, the Immigration Restriction Act 1901, prohibited entry of Chinese and colored immigrants and mandated immediate deportation of Pacific Islanders who were already working on the cane plantations of the Chinese growers. This became known as the White Australia policy. Chinese seeking to enter Australia were required to take an English dictation test of a 50-word paragraph. Failure led to immediate deportation.
The obstacles became so egregious that the Chinese plantation owners left. Jan See Chin was one of the last two Chinese growers who held out. But eventually, he, too, conceded that the environment in Australia was too hostile to continue to do business. He sold his acreage, packed up his household and growing family of eight and sailed to Hong Kong.
Intending to set up a temporary home base for his family, See Chin acquired a spacious flat in Hong Kong and enrolled his children in private, Anglican schools. Then he turned his attention to his home village of Ho Tau in the Kwangtung Province to build a family mansion.
Once in Ho Tau, See Chin noticed that the villagers lacked conveniences he had become accustomed to in Australia. Motivated to help the village modernize, he recruited other overseas Chinese to form a community development club. The club set about to build an electric company, rice-hulling mill, weaving factory, as well as a system of plumbing to bring water to the village.
Most of Shekki County lacked an effective way to transport local goods between the village and other parts of the province, let alone with the international port of Macau. See Chin’s solution was to plan and finance the first paved road in the entire province of Kwangtung.
He co-founded the Kee Kwan Road Construction Co., Ltd. which inaugurated the first phase of the 30-mile highway in 1928 to great fanfare. The celebration attracted luminaries as well as tens of thousands of onlookers. The presence of this seminal road and the busses and trucks purchased for it catapulted the Shekki District into the commercial powerhouse it remains today.
But all did not go smoothly. During the 1920s & 30s, rampant banditry pervaded southern China, often targeting wealthy families. One bandit gang kidnapped his 16-year-old son, tethering him to a post for over three months while demanding a ransom of 15,000 pounds (equivalent to over $1 million today). See Chin negotiated a reduced ransom of 2,000 pounds and the traumatized young man was eventually released.
Villagers motivated to improve their farms or start a small business lacked the means to borrow money. See Chin established banks in the village, Shekki, and Hong Kong. But two Canadian bankers embezzled funds and poisoned See Chin to cover up the crime. Jan See Chin died at the age of 59. His wife, Maud See Chin, had just birthed their 13th child and would spend the next few years pursuing justice for her husband’s murder, a fight that went all the way to the highest court in the land called the Privy Council.

Orctober- Winter Formal and New Years
Tumblr media
Ok, at the demand of absolutely no-one, I made a part 2 to my Fall Formal piece because dang it, I wanted more so I made more and this gets into my headcanons about modern orcs A LOT. LIke, A LOT. So I have the headcanon that orcs would treat the new year and then the reaping, which according to @momolady was in the spring, I thought (assumed) it was in the fall because, well, that’s when you usually reap your crops when you’re gardening, but whatever, I don’t care either way but those two events are some of the bigger “holidays” orcs would celebrate. And in my other headcanon that orcs LOVE SPICY FOOD. Like they would so eat jerk chicken, hot pot and well just any dish with lots of spice, lots of flavor and for me, hot pot is quitessentially like hot spicy person’s dream food. Because you eat it communally which orcs are all about their family and their clans and to me that just makes a lot of sense and please don’t think I’m trying to make any racial or ethnic slights in any way one way or another, this purely fantasy and conjecture at this point. So I started writing this at like 9pm last night and I of course- ran out of time and conciousness but it’s still the first for a few more hours and dang it, it’s gonna count. Thanks for reading. Also because I’m a lemon flavored factory there’s some smut at the end. Just...heads up.
Orctober- Winter Formal and New Years
Even though you had graduated early and had even started your higher education to be a medical massage therapist, you returned to your highschool for the honor of going with your boyfriend, Kihro to the winter formal which coincidentally was Kihro’s also last school function because he had taken your cue of graduating early and did so himself since his on the job training also counted for credits and cashed those in so he could get a head start on working full time at the sister branch of Wright Plumbing. And ever since your last hospital stay, you and him had been rather inseparable and had been going steady. It helped that you were friends and had that to build your romantic relationship on.
You had only started your massage school a week before and thankfully you still got to wear the dress you were going to wear to the fall formal, only this time- neither of you were really that stressed out this time around, instead both of you were so happy and excited and anyone who didn’t know you two were now an item definitely knew now and both of you felt like adults with both of you being out of highschool and in your chosen careers full time.
“Happy to be out?” Kihro asked as you both swayed to the music on the dance floor, the rest of world falling away except for just the two of you.
“Yes, you have no idea. I hope this is the last time we’re in this building, well besides maybe prom and maybe graduation- which I don’t know if I even want to come for those unless you wanted to go to those.” You admitted.
“Well, now that I’m out, I really don’t want to come back just for those either unless you really wanted to go to those but I could be making money on those days instead if you didn’t want to go.” Kihro confessed.
“Did you want to go?” Kihro asked you bluntly.
“To Prom? I wouldn’t mind, but to graduation? Eh.” You shrugged your shoulders. “I wouldn’t mind just waiting to see where we’re at then and cross that bridge when we get there.” You offered as Kihro nodded in agreement.
“By the way, I wanted to tell you that next month, after I turn 18 and can rent from whoever, I wanted you to come apartment shopping with me.” Kihro invited since legally orcs were considered adults at 16 and could drink and buy liquor that young and even could choose to graduate early at 16 if they had a job lined up that would give them the required credits and could even move out and rent from other orcs while others required their young ones to be 18 before they were considered adults and do all of that although more and more orcs were choosing not only to stay in school the extra two years, but get their own higher education too before they went out into the work force.
“Aww, that’s very sweet and I would love to but you know there’s no way in hell my dad would let me go to live with you before we got married, but it would make me really happy if you had a home to bring me to if that were to ever happen, even if it’s a little one room apartment, that will allow pets because I’m not leaving home without Kelly or Duchess.” You reminded him.
“I know, I’ve been keeping that in mind as I scope some places out, trying to keep your school and my work in mind. But the more I dance with you, the more I realize that I really, really don’t want to dance with anyone but you- for the rest of my life.” Kihro confessed before he pulled a gold bead out of his pocket and placed it in your hand and you knew enough about the orc bead culture now that you knew what this bead was and more importantly what it meant.
Orcs gave each other beads all the time between friends and family- some of them were cheap metal or wood, or stone or semiprecious stone and there were millions of glass beads that had an array of meaning and tradition because now that everyone lived in a more “civilized” world- beads didn’t always have to be so tough that they could last through wars and raids, now they could be more delicate, intricate and beautiful and the wearer could afford to be more careful with their display.
But gold- or any precious metal for that matter, that was reserved for very serious relationships, and usually engagements or weddings. And they kept the gold beads behind glass at the counter at the bead stores and they had levels to them, they had the cheap, flashy gold or silver plated ones with crystals and rhinestones and usually just about the time the plating would come off or tarnish- the relationship would probably fall apart and usually orc kids in elementary school or middle school bought them, but then after that, they got really simple in design, but solid gold and in your opinion- a bit more dignified and discreet and from there- then they could get crazy again, this time- real precious stones inlaid into them and could cost as much as engagement rings could and were just as varied and to orcs- just as serious as engagement rings. Your jaw dropped at how beautiful it was as you stopped dancing to look at it closer before Kihro pulled both of you off the dancefloor so you didn’t get run over as you got to look at it in better light before you realized there was beautiful pave diamonds in the delicate and intricate gold carving. He must have dropped a fortune on it as you turned it in your small delicate fingers and you could see that it was real 24 karat gold according to the stamp at the base and it was heavy, just like solid gold should be.
“Are you- are you proposing to me?” You had to ask as you were so touched your eyes started to water but you couldn’t stop smiling.
“Well, yes and no, yes in that this is exactly what it looks like and no in that it’s not an “engagement ring” engagement ring which when the time is right, I’ll get one for you because I don’t think that’ll fly yet at least with your parents, but think of it like a promise ring, but in a bead and it’ll hopefully remind anyone and everyone that sees it on you- that you’re at least spoken for- if you want to be.”  Kihro explained, his own heart hammering in his chest and in his ears louder than the beat to the music because the more he was around you the more hopelessly in love he fell in with you and he needed to make good on his promises to himself that he would always take care of you and protect you and do whatever it took to make you happy.
“I definitely want to be spoken for, especially by you.” You beamed happily before you happily jumped up on your tiptoes and kissed him as he welcomed it with open arms.
“I love you Brie,” Kihro professed as he pressed his forehead to yours as you did the same.
“I love you too Kihro.” You mirrored, meaning every word before you had him put it with the others. One of which was actually his to signify that you two were officially dating because again in orc culture- the intended mate got a stack of their pursuers beads presented to them and the intended got to pick out their favorite and wear it in their hair and it was not unusual for them to trade beads so that most orc men wore one feminine bead or even a gender fluid or gender neutral bead with their masculine ones to show that they were in a relationship with whoever while others did the reverse with their chosen gender.
A couple of weeks later you were at a proper New Year’s Eve party- orc style where Kihro’s family had made a feast for themselves that they brought to the clan’s Hall where everything that happened within the clan took place as you watched as all the tables had special metal pits in them to hold charcoal fire pits with a huge fire in the middle of the hall to get the briquets burning and the pots of broth and everyone brought their own feast but also gave to the clan’s “hoard” of food at the front where huge refrigerators were to keep things cold- in case anyone ran out of food or needed food or simply wanted to try something they didn’t bring and you gladly donated a few 5lb bags of shrimp to which made Kihro and his family happy and proud of you for your generosity.
The feast signified that the next year would be even more prosperous than the last as you pigged out on dumplings and king crab since your dad had “blessed” your relationship by not arguing or making a big fuss over your gold bead and now- he made sure to send you with a huge box of king crab- which was your favorite kind of crab along with a few bags of shrimp that were the size of langoustine lobsters and smoked salmon and some crawfish along with a cooler full of beer and specialty flavored moonshine that you and your dad flavored yourselves since the Soche’s were providing everything else including chipping in to get the clan a keg for the festivities, many families doing the same so that there were just as many kegs of beer as there were families, many of them seemingly to drink their weight in beer alone.
The Soche’s also provided all the noodles, hand made and homemade dumplings which you had come over to Kihro’s house every day for the last few days to help get everything prepped as Rhiox and Kihro were beyond pleased that you helped and because of your small nimble fingers, all the dumplings were folded beautifully, the different folds differentiating the fillings. The family also provided vegetables and beef and other meats for their family’s feast, most of them sliced thin so that it cooked in the spicy broth quickly or thick steaks cooked over charcoal fires in the tables themselves next to the hot pots since his clan’s tradition was have a huge communal hot pot gathering and cook out, but because of your delicate system, his mother made a special broth just for you that was flavorful but not nearly as spicy which you were eternally grateful for and even Kihro and his younger siblings enjoyed it and one of the traditions was that you sent the first bowl to the clan’s elders to pay homage and respect to them as they all sat at one table next to the “hoard”, none of them having to cook, but got served by the clan as a whole as you placed the bowl full of your own broth and other meats and vegitables in front of Kihro’s grandparents who were part of the clan’s elders.
His whole clan seemed to be beyond pleased that it was Kihro who had claimed you even though Kihro was embarrassed by that and had made sure that you understood that who you were as a person was all he cared about and what family you were from didn’t have a bearing on how he felt about you which made you happy and your face hurt from smiling so much and you eventually got used to everyone coming up to congratulate you when they saw the gold bead in your hair that Kihro and Rhiox had braided your hair spectacularly just for this occasion and you were happy that you at least got a huge orc sized bib to cover your clothes because of the hands on nature of this feast and of course you were happy to drink a really good chocolate mocha caramel cream stout with your meal because orcs loved to drink- beers especially and even though you weren’t fond of beer- this one- you made an exception for and greasy spicy kisses with Kihro were especially delicious from your spot practically in his lap because the special picnic tables were huge to accommodate orcs so because of that, there was enough room on the bench itself to sit between Kihro’s legs and leaned back into him and he was able to rest his head on top of yours, careful not to get any food in your hair as he ate one handed, the other arm wrapped around your waist possessively as his dad Kidron tended to the grill part of the feast while Rhriox made sure to feed Kihro’s yonger siblings who adored you.
Also because of your close proximity, you could feel how hard Kihro was, his cock tucked into his right pant leg as you “practiced” your effleurage and other techniques on his legs in between eating as his hand splayed over your belly under your apron sized bib that covered most of you like a blanket from your neck down as his fingertips ever so amazingly teased your slit through the fabric of your leggings and it was hard yet easy for both of you to act nonchalant and innocent and it was easy to brush off your flushed cheeks on the beer and the spice and it wasn’t until his parents and his younger siblings broke off to catch up with the other members of the clan that you and Kihro snuck away to the roof to “cool off” after he had gone to the bathroom to wash his hands extra good before he brought you up to the roof you happily got inside Kihro’s huge coat with him to stay warm in the freezing temperatures, the snow continuing to fall in big fluffly flakes, your head popping out of his collar as you literally sat on his lap this time as he sat down on one of the benches before he shoved his hand down your pants to find your still drenched pussy aching for him before he fingered you because you weren’t on any birth control but he wanted to prove that at least he could please you without his cock, even if it was just through his fingers which thankfully didn’t compromise your maidenhood as his other hand greedily grasped your breasts as he managed to kiss, lick and nip at your neck and shoulder as you plowed your head back and let it rest on his shoulder as you in turn pulled his length out and it squeezed in between your upper thighs and outer lips before it would poke out your front where your hand eagerly awaited the head to stroke it in time with your pelvis grinding the top of it and it was the closest you could get to the real thing.
“Kihro,” you panted desperately in a hushed whisper as his touches were sending you over the moon and all you got back was a growling snarl by your ear as he playfully yet softly bit down on your shoulder as he twisted your nipple between his fingers while his other fingers pinched your nub before his middle finger dove into your center to tap and rub at your G-spot and you grinded on his hand while your own hands squeezed around his length and pinched the head, his precum completely coating your hands and dripping down to your own lap as Kihro moved his own hips in sync with yours and because you were both pressed for time because you didn’t want to get caught, it only heightened your arousal and in no time at all, you came, another keening muffuled cry of Kihro’s name inside his coat as your core constricted and fluttered around Kihro’s finger which spurned him to shoot out a load so huge you couldn’t hold it in both of your hands and you had to quickly try to throw it out of the warm cocoon of his coat onto the snow around you so it wouldn’t get on either of you before you wiped your hands off on the snow on the bench on either side of you as Kihro recovered as you felt his sweat make his chest and your back that was pressed up against him wet.
“Damn.” He grunted before he pressed soft and sweet kisses into your neck and shoulder before he helped put you back together and get your bra back in place and your underwear and leggings back into place before he got himself put away and once you were straightened up he wrapped his arms tight around you to hug you and kiss your cheek before you turned your head to really kiss him over your shoulder.
“I love you so much, thank you,” he thanked you earnestly.
“I love you too, and thank you, ending this year with a bang and starting the next one off right.” You giggled before you checked the time on your phone.
“We should get back,” you urged before he reluctantly let you go and you both had to hide the “evidence” in the rest of the snow as you made a butt print on the bench next to Kirho so that it looked like you were sitting side by side before you went down stairs, passing another couple coming into the building as they were coming out and judging by their own giddyness, were probably about to do the same or probably even more than what you and Kihro just did which made Kihro and yourself burst into laughter once you got inside to warm back up for a few minutes, all of you watching the ball drop on the huge tv’s on the inside counting down before kissing Kihro once more when it was the new year and oh so happy that it all started with a boy, asking a girl to a dance.

i've been thinking that i'd like to say some of this to G—, if only i can figure out how to articulate it:
i was starting to look at the reading for monday, which is seneca’s de brevitate vitae; and that got me thinking again about the introductory lecture G— gave us on wednesday, which was of course partially practical and partially biographical, but touched also on the question of: why are we here, doing this absurd abstruse expensive thing? why spend our time on this, and not on something practical like, oh, plumbing? [which i laughed a little at, but not in mockery, though he couldn’t have known it; it's just that my grandfather went to this school too, and came away from it with much the same idea, that my father would be better off becoming a plumber: the seduction of the obviously-useful.] and of course these are precisely the questions i’ve been asking myself since my mother died, though also since that last, alienated spring at H—: why am i here, doing this? in the face of death, especially (which is seneca’s framing too), which renders all things vain, endstopped beyond any thought of continuation…
there are casual answers i could make, of course, but the only real one is: because it matters to me, matters soul-deep; and though the soul is not, in my philosophy, a thing that extends beyond death, it exists, i think, outside time, inasmuch as when we are engaged, impassioned, we escape for a suspended stretch the petty absurdity of our mortality. we will be dead to the pipes, when we are gone, just the same as we will be dead to the poems, or to the philosophy; what matters is that we seize, while we are here, on what makes us feel fully, vibrantly alive in the doing of it. on what, when we give ourselves to it, gives us our selves back again, renewed and amplified, with the fresh springing joy of new green things and the golden-crisp satisfaction of late september, of limbs loose and warm with loping and yet with strength in them still to run a while longer…
for a while i thought i didn’t deserve to love this field, this cloistered garden, or that it didn’t perhaps, in the scheme of things, matter that i did. now i’m starting to think it’s maybe the only thing that matters—that we claw our way not carelessly but fiercely towards what makes our soul sing, like a bell struck. the question isn’t, why do this, of all things, and it isn’t rhetorical or sneering but sincerely wants an answer; the question is, why actively choose it? and the answer is: because we should do what matters, before we die, and not cut ourselves off from it in trade for another time, which is not guaranteed us, or for security, which is guaranteed us neither; my mother had ample resources, had spent a lifetime gathering the store of them, and still she died groaning and afraid. let us reach fiercely for what matters to us, then, while yet we live, and be grateful for the reaching, οἶον τὸ γλυκύμαλον: ripeness is all.
…which is a lot of grand words, and i don’t know that i’d repeat them all to G—; but what i would say, what i want to say, is that: i think it’s often very easy, for undergraduates of a certain background, to take this schooling for granted; or for others, to see it merely as a required step, or even hitch in their step, on the path to something more practical. i’m grateful to have been urged to consider the doing of it in its own right, as something worthy of that consideration; grateful to find the grounding depth of that consideration explicitly offered me, as a place to stand and start from. it’s not often that i find a first class offering me real meat, real meaning, and—i don't know, i just really appreciated the unexpected thoughtfulness of that, striking at the heart all the more keenly in being a gift unlooked-for.
