Socially distanced orchestral playing: adapting to the post-COVID-19 world
When COVID-19 hit us all, the initial reaction for most musicians was one bordering on panic. We are in the same boat as everyone else with regard to health and financial worries. But unlike other professions, in the initial months of the pandemic, musicians faced the prospect of the live and recording music industry disappearing altogether and with it, our livelihoods. Many colleagues of mine, members and freelancers whose credits include recording for all the major film studios and worldwide tours in classical orchestras and supporting pop outfits, have sold their instruments and are re-training as plumbers, electricians and psysiotherapists. Their efforts to redirect their assets just to put food on the table is the top-level music and entertainment industry’s loss.
As orchestral performance gradually started up again, I returned to tentative ‘performances’ -or rather socially distanced live recording sessions with no audience. Pre-pandemic activity had regularly seen 5 shows a week, often 10 to 20 day stints without a break, with back-to-back rehearsals, concerts and performances in the UK and abroad. More a gruelling than a glamorous lifestyle, as the market economics of the sector keep wages right down. This was now down to two dates per month, yet up from zero and no prospects, so comparatively, a huge improvement.
The first time I played again after the full stop I was weary of performing, as a huge question mark hung over the proceedings. We had only ever known to play in close proximity with one another. Ignoring the fact that we’d all been out of action for months, the pre-pandemic close distance between my neighbors and I meant that we could all hear a certain level of detail in each others’ playing. This is a huge factor in being able to successfully blend one’s own sound into its surroundings. As everyone else does the same, it’s the being able to hear that level of detail that enables great orchestral playing.
Spaced further apart, that level of detail was gone, added to the natural decibel drop from having your neighbors further away. We were all suddenly much less assured as to whether how we were playing was what was needed in order to attack notes and release them at the same time, whether the sustain was of the same quality etc. When we play live, we play ‘to the room’. The feedback from the room informs our performance. But the room here was worthless because we were playing to the microphones, for streaming and recording. What mattered now was that the microphones picked up the ensemble precision and blend, regardless of how that sounded to us in the room; and this is by definition very different. We were used to this relationship during normal recording sessions, but now the added distance removed the ability to be able to tell for ourselves whether something was right.
It was a very disconcerting few months where I, and others, felt that we were increasingly getting the hang of how to play. Several times we’d come off the stage thinking something had gone particularly well, only to be taken aback later when hearing the recording. I suspected other orchestras may be going through similar experiences, and listened to the efforts of others, just to check. Sure enough, to my trained ears at least, there had been an all-round drop in quality across the European and American top brass.
As 2020 turned into 2021, a new dynamic began to establish itself where recording and video producers and engineers became the primary quality control operators. Conductors still pursued artistic goals but had to stand by while playback was checked time and again for patching. Orchestral players were forced to rely less on well-honed chamber music skills applied symphonically -over decades for many- with the balance falling to the conductor needing sometimes to come out of their shell a bit more, to just show the gesture a bit more clearly, just so the orchestra could perform the basic task of playing together…and then sit and wait for the producer’s thumbs up.
Around the halfway point of the 14-month-long process described above, I conducted a recording session for an Arts Council-funded project ‘Songs of Isolation’, a collection of 3 Handel arias-come-concerto, where the arias speak of themes applicable to our current pandemic challenges.
Many of the singers and players had not performed a note of music with another human for 8 or 10 months. Some shared my experience of a handful of dates, while others were retraining in something different altogether, having in their minds turned their backs on their life’s calling out of necessity. These exquisite musicians turned up on time at the venue, opened their cases, the singers stood near the microphones, and for the first time in months read music in the same room as others.
I knew their apprehension well, and the sense that the goalposts had moved significantly. There was a palpable psychological handicap present as the impact of the social distance removed the sense of confidence they had exuded so many times previously in places like Abbey Road studios and Carnegie Hall. My previous experience on the other side of the fence had prepared me for this and with the recording engineer Adaq Khan, who had also recorded a couple of socially distanced projects, I conducted the recording sessions as if guiding an athlete’s recovery back from injury, gently kneading the performers towards a way of working, playing and listening which step by step removed insecurities, building up confidence, and ultimately, yielding the dripping gorgeous sound these extraordinary performers are renown for. It was a transformative experience to go from drought, loss and fear to hopeful, flowering beauty in the space of a few hours.
Government guidelines continue to change and different venues have different takes on what constitutes a safe distance. The sands are still changing, but what are artists if not adaptable? The quest for the highest possible quality continues.
‘Songs of Isolation’ is free to watch on YouTube.

Green Book!
Plot!
‘Green Book’ tells the story of African-American classical pianist Dr. Don Shirley and his hired help, Italian-American Tony Lip, as they navigate through the segregated south for a concert tour in 1962. The story between these two men and their work relationship turning into a life long friendship and how it translates on screen, can only be described as simply remarkable. You see such a juxtaposition between class, race, and cultural issues of the day. The Bronx vs. Carnegie Hall, white vs. black, classical music vs. Motown, etc. Each character needs and must have what the other naturally has, they just don’t know it yet! It comes off that both men see the potential in each other, even if they don’t recognize it themselves. You don’t quite notice it at first, but slowly a chemistry builds up between the two and manifests into a deeper knowledge and desire for the best of each other. Tempers flare, lessons are learned, appreciation and eventually affection occurs between the two men as they drive across numerous friendly but mostly non-friendly states. You see a class and race struggle, not only with the two men directly, but also in their own personal circumstances without each other. Tony, displaying his own racism when he throws away two perfectly good glasses that two black plumbers drank from after they fixed his sink. Dr. Shirley, while he stays in a ‘color approved’ hotel, fails miserably while trying to mingle with the local African-American community simply because it’s not his usual surroundings. In the end, you see so much growth and character development from both men by them simply being honest with each other and themselves. It takes some time and there’s bumps and bruises along the way, but the knowledge gained, the trust acquired, and the mutual affection they end up having for each other transcends both the time, and the screen.
Performances!
Mahershala Ali- Ali as Dr. Don Shirley came off as an uppity type of man who definitely used his status and position as a defense mechanism against those who he simply cannot “understand”. In the first scene with both men as Tony interviews for the position, you see a penthouse (on top of Carnegie Hall for that matter), surrounded by lavish relics and ornate gifts from what one can assume are from around the globe. Shirley comes out decked out in lavish garb and sits on his ‘throne’; which is really a nice chair that is elevated above the rest of his home, while Tony sits in front of him while being interviewed. And this is their first scene together! This definitely sets a dynamic for the beginning of their relationship. At first, Shirley comes off as a man who ‘can’t be bothered’. Someone who must have all their demands met because they’re civilized. You get the sense that he’s hiding something and can only stick to what he knows and will not venture outside of that. That is until Tony gets a hold of him. :) Overall, Ali does a magnificent job at portraying a man struggling to find his own in a segregated world; the only world he’s ever known. Through this relationship with another man who he at first views as his inferior, he begins to realize that in a cruel and unfair world, moments of tolerance, cultural revelation, and a very personal bond with someone the world views as your exact opposite can make all the difference.
Viggo Mortensen- Mortensen delivers a endearing and moving portrayal of a family man trying to do what’s best given his circumstances. Throughout the film, you really feel for Mortensen as Tony Lip. Going from job to job and trying to make things work for his family remains top priority for Tony throughout the film; especially after taking the chauffeuring job and promising to be back by Christmas Eve. Mortensen portrays Tony as a rough and tumble kinda guy. Italian man from the Bronx with a great heart but who also has some learning to do. Compared to Dr. Shirley, Tony has never left the Bronx; sees no reason to, and can adapt to any scenario. He has street smarts compared to Shirley who has none. Tony is one of those ‘stand up’ guys and Mortensen perfectly represents that. You root for Tony and his mission; while also wanting him and encouraging him to learn from the dangerous situation he’s in by driving a black man in the segregated South who just happens to be his boss. From the ‘Italian-ism’s’ and accent, to the family man aspect, to the evolution of his character while spending time with Dr. Shirley, Mortensen does a remarkable job.
Poignant moment(s)!
There’s soooo many in this film! But i’ll just name a few.
The subtle racism Tony displays at the beginning. Once with black plumbers in his house and another time when he encounters an Indian man doing the interviews for Dr. Shirley.
When they eat KFC together! :)
While jailed in Mississippi, Dr. Shirley makes a fun/interesting phone call.
Numerous scenes where people recognize a white man is driving a black man around town.
When given the choice to go indoors for the parties or stay outside with the help, Tony learns a valuable lesson.
There’s so many more, but these stood out to me!
Overall! Absolute must see! And my pick so far for Best Picture. :) (still have two more to see)

WFCR.  Pastoral Suite by Lars-Erik Larsson.
More doctor stuff. I am weighed and bled at Dr. A’s office.  His office suite is always quiet.  No music.  He shares this site with audiology people.  Across the hall from the room where I am shown  and am sitting is a huge anatomically correct ear.  In the next room there is, unseen by me, a struggle going on.  Someone is wrestling with a huge office appliance of some kind.  Grunts and groans and sometimes a faint sound of  metal.  Man vs machine.
Beautiful day.  Fences are set up all along Broadway in anticipation of the anti-gun March For Our Lives event on Saturday.  Note: In the crazy age we live in there has been much talk about arming teachers.  But recently there has been several incidents of guns having accidentally gone off  in schools during gun instruction sessions.
Friday, March 23, 2018
Beautiful weather.
The city, or, my area of it, is filled with kids, here for the aniti-gun protest march. They occupy the sidewalk in phalanxes making it impossible to get  by (why would anyone want to?).
Note: There has been talk of handing out summonses for smoking while walking.  Secondhand smoke issue...  Somewhere in the pages of John O‘Hara the author mentions that cigarette manufacturers, as part of an ad campaign,  paid stylish-looking  women to smoke  while walking on Fifth Avenue.
Saturday, March 24, 2018
Huge anti gun rally.  Here (they are, tens of thousands of them, walking, slowly south on Central Park West, a half block from me.
Kenichi has a layover.  I make a list of the things I’d like him to repair (but only if he feels up to it).  Later, when he comes (he has brought his bag of tools)  he starts right away on the kitchen faucet.  (Longish story here.  The plumbers I was in touch with gave me an estimate of four hundred dollars but never came back.  [It is an old building.  Too damn much trouble to fix things.]) He tells me that getting here from Carnegie Hall, where he is due back in a few hours, was no easy matter.  Crowds, walking in lockstep, blocked any route he chose.
Later: Success. In his other life he is a landlord.  He can repair all manner of things...boats, cars, etc.
Note: It is good that so many people are out to promote changing gun laws.  Today there were demonstrations here, Washington D C, L A...many other places.  Kids speaking up...

A College Reality Check – The New York Times
Want to get The Morning by email? Here’s the sign-up.
Good morning. John Bolton’s book harshly criticizes the president. A former Atlanta police officer is charged with murder. And the Trump administration exits crisis mode on the coronavirus. Let’s start with the problems for colleges hoping to reopen.
Colleges have come rushing forth to announce that they will be inviting students back to campus this fall. But as I’ve spoken to college officials over the past few weeks — usually not for quotation — I’ve been struck by the difference between their public optimism and their private uncertainty.
Many university leaders aren’t sure how well on-campus living and in-person classes will work during this pandemic. Some acknowledge it may not work at all.
It will require radical changes to the normal campus experience, like canceling many activities, rotating which students can return (to keep dorms from being too full) and continuing to hold classes online (to protect professors).
This approach is likely to frustrate students — and it still might not prevent new coronavirus outbreaks. Nearly all distinctive parts of a campus experience, including parties, meals and extracurriculars, revolve around close social contact, often indoors.
So what explains the surge of “We’re open!” announcements? Competitive pressure, in part. Many colleges will face serious financial problems if they lose a year of tuition and other revenue.
Now professors and administrators have begun publicly criticizing reopening plans:
“My suspicion,” Susan Dynarski, a University of Michigan economist, wrote on Twitter, is that “colleges are holding out hope of in-person classes in order to keep up enrollments.” She added: “If they tell the difficult truth now, many students will decide to take a year off,” which “will send college finances into a tailspin.”
Carl Bergstrom, a biologist at the University of Washington, noted that the new class of Army recruits at Fort Benning recently suffered a major outbreak, despite universal testing there.
“Colleges are deluding themselves,” Michael J. Sorrell, the president of Paul Quinn College in Dallas, wrote in The Atlantic. Laurence Steinberg, a Temple University psychologist, wrote a Times Op-Ed arguing that the reopening plans were “so unrealistically optimistic that they border on delusional.”
Many “professors are wary of returning to the classroom, fearful that the health risks may be too high,” Deirdre Fernandes, a Boston Globe reporter, wrote. And Clara Burke of Carnegie Mellon University wrote: “Students can get ‘grab and go’ sandwiches, but do kitchen workers have enough space to protect themselves while making those sandwiches?”
There are no easy answers. Telling students to stay home in the fall also has big downsides. And it’s possible that students will do a better job wearing masks and remaining socially distant than skeptics like Steinberg expect.
But the path that colleges are choosing comes with big risks. American higher education is about to embark on a highly uncertain experiment.
FOUR MORE BIG STORIES
1. What’s inside Bolton’s book
The new memoir from John Bolton, President Trump’s former national security adviser, contains a series of remarkable allegations against Trump: that he pressured China to help him win re-election, praised China’s internment of Uighur Muslims, asked if Finland was part of Russia, said some reporters should be “executed,” and said it would be “cool” to invade Venezuela.
The Justice Department has asked a judge to immediately halt publication of the book, saying it contained classified information.
Every modern president has had former aides write memoirs with modest criticisms or unflattering anecdotes. But the harshness of the criticism from those who worked in the Trump administration — like Jim Mattis and others — has no precedent.
2. The White House moves on from the virus
The Trump administration has largely stopped treating the coronavirus as a crisis, with the president saying in an interview Wednesday night that it was “fading away.” The White House’s task force now meets just twice a week. Experts like Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx speak to the president less often. The country’s designated “testing czar” has returned to his old job.
With federal leadership receding and cases climbing in many places, state officials have been left to figure out how to handle the situation on their own, The Times reports.
More virus developments:
3. A crisis for black-owned businesses
The coronavirus shutdowns are hitting black-owned small businesses especially hard, new data shows. These businesses lack easy access to loans and appear to be benefiting less than white-owned businesses from government stimulus programs.
Our story includes maps of New York, Chicago and several other major cities, showing where businesses were running short on cash heading into the pandemic.
4. Charges in Rayshard Brooks shooting
A former Atlanta police officer, Garrett Rolfe, was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks outside a Wendy’s restaurant.
Prosecutors said that Rolfe shot Brooks twice in the back, declared, “I got him,” and kicked him as he lay on the ground. The Fulton County district attorney said another officer involved in the confrontation, Devin Brosnan, stepped on Brooks’s shoulder.
Appearing on Fox News, Trump defended Rolfe and blamed Brooks: “You can’t resist a police officer, and if you have a disagreement, you have to take it up after the fact.”
More protest developments:
Senate Republicans unveiled a policing overhaul bill yesterday that will compete with a House bill proposed by Democrats. Among the differences: Democrats would allow victims of police brutality to seek damages, while Republicans would not.
Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, urged the United Nations on Wednesday to investigate the police killings of black people in the United States.
Here’s what else is happening
The Aunt Jemima brand is getting a new name and logo, after its parent company acknowledged that its origins were “based on a racial stereotype.” Uncle Ben’s is also “evaluating all possibilities” concerning its branding.
The actor Danny Masterson, known for his roles in the sitcoms “That ’70s Show” and “The Ranch,” has been charged with raping three women in the early 2000s.
Lives Lived: Thomas F. Freeman was such an authority on public speaking that Martin Luther King Jr., Barbara Jordan and Denzel Washington all heeded his wisdom. So did the debate teams at the historically black Texas Southern University, which he coached to national renown over 60 years. He has died at age 100.
BACK STORY: A safe return for domestic workers
Tara Parker-Pope has been hearing from Times readers who want to know when it will be safe to allow domestic workers — like cleaners, plumbers and home health aides — back into their homes. Her answer flips the question: The main risk is for the workers, not the homeowners.
Domestic workers often visit multiple homes in a single day, increasing their chances of infection. In response to the questions she’s been getting, Tara has written a guide for The Times’s Well section.
Her two main pieces of advice: Leave the house when the workers are there (or, if that’s not possible, spend time in a closed room). And open as many windows and doors as possible to improve ventilation.
Related: “Is it safe to keep employing a cleaner? Wrong question, lady,” Roxane Gay writes in the Work Friend column.

Maque choux is a fancy name for a dish that’s really the perfect opportunity to use up the odds and ends in your fridge. Got half a red onion? Toss it in. Maybe a bell pepper, on the verge of going bad? Perfect. Half a chile? Use it.
The traditional Cajun side dish makes for either a condiment or light lunch. Placed on a bun, it’s like a refreshing vegetarian sloppy joe, Gabrielle Hamilton, a chef, said. Find her recipe here.
The plan to keep N.B.A. players safe
When the N.B.A. resumes its season inside Walt Disney World, the league will follow a long set of rules meant to protect players and team personnel from the coronavirus, including:
Players will not be allowed to shower after games until they are back at their hotels.
Each team will have its own on-site chef, and Disney restaurants will occasionally be closed to accommodate players.
The league will make socially distant recreational activities available for players, including video games, movie screenings and golf (without caddies).
The new home-court advantage: The Athletic reports that the league will be split among three hotels — with the top teams earning the most posh lodging.
Inside the mind of a comedy provocateur
The cult comedian Eric Andre considers himself to be “a benevolent attacker.” Known for the cringe-inducing antics on his series, a send up of late-night talk shows, he says he relies on “an element of a sleeping danger — you want there to be something at risk.” Past stunts include pretending to vomit in front of an unsuspecting guest and chasing a bassinet floating away on balloons while screaming, “My baby!”
In a profile, the 37-year-old star talks about his new Netflix special and comedy film.
