don't suppose you know of any shows/other media that are princess tutu-esque? been a fan of the show for a while but i'm running a dnd game for friends based on the same concept of fairytale-trapped-in-a-town-trapped-in-a-fairytale and could use some more inspiration to draw from 😔

HELLO I’ve been thinking about answers to this. It’s hard because princess tutu is super weird and unique. My thoughts are:

Into the Woods: a Broadway musical interweaving the stories fairytale characters (cinderella, red riding hood, jack, etc), all tied together by an original fairytale about a baker trying to lift the curse on his house. Into the woods is a classic for a reason. It gets fun and meta in the way princess tutu is. If musicals are your jam it’s a great example of tying fairytales together all while telling an original story and the themes are just soooooooooo 💖💖 it’s also on YouTube for free!

Sigh. I can’t make this list without mentioning ABC’s Once Upon a Time: tv show about fairytale characters trapped living regular lives in the real world with no memories of their own stories. It follows the daughter of Snow White, who is in complete denial as to her fairytale heritage, as she reconnects with her son and pretends to investigate the town’s “curse” to appease him. Fair warning there are like 8 seasons and it gets weirder and more convoluted with every one but the first handful are pretty solid. Every episode has a real world plot and a fairytale plot that tie together. I honestly have no idea where you watch OUAT these days

Revolutionary Girl Utena: after the death of her parents, utena was comforted by a traveling prince. Inspired by him, she vows to become a prince herself. Very much a surreal, magical story about being Trapped (not a town but a school). Less overt fairytale influence as the other two but the vibes are very much there.
