the acrid stench of smoke clawed at ziggy’s lungs as he hurtled through the narrow, dimly lit alleyways, each breath a jagged gasp whilst he tripped over debris. sarang’s scream—piercing and desperate—still echoed in his ears, the sound like a shard of glass lodged in his heart. and for that, his feet pounded against the pavement, but the real drumbeat was the frantic rhythm of his heart, crashing in his chest like a caged beast.
"sarang!" he shouted, his voice cracking and raw from the smoke that swirled around him like an unrelenting shadow. the once-familiar streets were now a chaotic blur, a labyrinth of choking grey that rendered his sense of direction useless.
to his own dismay, there was no answer to his pleading call. only the relentless hiss of flames and the distant, mournful wail of a siren.
"sarang! where are you?" his words trembled with the kind of panic that made his whole body shake. his hands stretched out as if he could physically draw her closer to him. he inhaled the smoky air, each breath a battle against the rising terror. he had to be close—he just had to be.
another scream cut through the haze, faint but unmistakable. ziggy’s pulse raced, and he pushed forward, every beat of his heart echoing louder than the chaos around him. he burst into a small clearing, where shadows flickered just beyond the edge of his vision. he lunged, reaching out with an anguished hope.
but when he arrived, there was nothing.
ziggy froze, his chest heaving as if it might burst. his eyes darted around, searching the smoke-choked scene with frantic desperation. where was she?
then it struck him—a horrible, bone-chilling realization. the scream, the smoke, all of it—it was too perfect, too timed. it wasn’t a cry for help; it was a trap.
before he could even react, the atmosphere around him shifted. the silence that followed was so eerie it felt alive, pressing in on him. ziggy’s heart slammed against his ribs as he understood with gut-wrenching clarity that he had walked straight into their snare.
just then, a sharp whistling cut through the fog. ziggy barely had a moment to brace himself before a violent impact slammed into his side, knocking the breath from his lungs. he staggered, his knees buckling, as white-hot pain seared through him like a living flame. his hand flew to his ribs, trying to steady the rapid, shallow breaths that were all he could manage.
the smoke tightened around him, twisting like a living shroud. ziggy gritted his teeth, fighting to stay upright, but his legs betrayed him, trembling uncontrollably. another blow—this one to his shoulder—sent him crashing hard against the cold, unforgiving ground.
his vision blurred, the thick fog swallowing everything in its unforgiving embrace.
"sarang…" he rasped, trying to call out her name once more, but it was barely more than a whisper. his arms, trembling with exertion and pain, pushed weakly against the concrete. a last attempt to make it to his feet once more. his head spun, and his limbs felt like they were sinking into lead.
another jarring impact, this time to the back of his head. stars exploded in his vision, and the world tilted violently. his fingers clawed at the rough surface of the pavement, seeking any anchor, but the smoke grew thicker, darker, suffocating him.
the last thing he glimpsed was a vague, shifting figure moving through the haze before the world finally succumbed to darkness.
