Vanguardia says Phoenix ‘inspired’ after visiting injured Marawi soldiers at VMMC
At 2-7, the Fuel Masters are at 10th spot as they are currently out of the “Magic 8” for the playoffs.
Vanguardia, in a bid to put things into perspective, brought the team to V. Luna Medical Center in Quezon City where Phoenix visited the injured soldiers from the current Marawi crisis.
“We made some personal reflections and visited the wounded Marawi soldiers last Saturday,” Vanguardia told FOX Sports on Monday.
The soft-spoken Phoenix coach believes the visit is a good “reality check” for his players, who don’t have to “dodge bullets” for a living.
“It (visit) woke us up to the reality that we are lucky to be playing basketball rather than dodging bullets or laying our lives in battle,” stressed Vanguardia, whose team is also providing a financial support to Filipino soldiers serving in the Marawi siege.
Phoenix is coming off a 105-92 spanking at the hands of a well-conditioned Barangay Ginebra squad last Friday.
Import Brandon Brown continues to lead the league in scoring with his 36.5 points per contest average, but the Fuel Masters just can’t seem to break out of their losing spell as of the moment.
And Vanguardia’s charges will certainly have their hands full in their last 2 games in the elims considering that playoff-bound squads Rain or Shine (Sept. 13) and San Miguel Beer (Sept. 20) loom in the horizon.
With over 2 weeks break, Vanguardia feels that’s enough time for the team to plot its move and hopefully, improve on team chemistry since Eugene Phelps was replaced by Brown due to a foot injury.
“The adjustment from Eugene to Brandon really affected the chemistry of the team kasi from inside player (in Phelps), we have an import (in Brown), who is more of a perimeter-oriented scorer,” shared Vanguardia.
“(The long break) gives us time to blend and yes, I challenged the team that we only got each other to lean on at this point. So we have to make this work,” explained Vanguardia.
Fortunately, Phoenix will be at full strength starting against Rain or Shine as young slotman Norbert Torres since fracturing his right hand before the start of the conference.
Fil-Canadian Matthew Wright can also contribute now without thinking of his Gilas duties, while Jeff Chan and Dylan Ababou are expected to work along since being acquired in a trade last month.
