after leaving the library, you were quite shaken

the fact that Sniper Mask, the person who Yuri and Mayuko said died was alive and hot on your trail, was somehow alive made you a little more than nervous

and Mayuko’s little startle on the bridge didn’t help either

you stuck close to her side, more than usual

you just had a feeling something bad would happen

so when she collapsed, you freaked out

“Mayuko!” Both you and Yuri yelled as she hit the floor, beads of sweat trailing off of her forehead. The two of you rushed to her side, worry in your eyes as you stared at your friend. You grasped her hand between yours, tears pricking at your eyes. Mayuko struggled to keep her own eyes open, it looked almost painful.

“Hey, are you okay? Mayuko!” Yuri cried, fueling your own anxieties. “Mayuko, what’s wrong? Talk to me!” You cried softly, squeezing her hand tighter. Tears fell from Yuri’s cheeks as you brought your arms around Mayuko. “You’ll be okay! I promise! We-we promise you’ll be alright!”

You squeezed her tight, holding her close as if releasing your grip, even slightly, would make you lose her. The sound of footsteps didn’t even register in your ears, only the sound of a gunshot from Yuri’s pistol. You knew you could trust her, your focus was on Mayuko.

your tears only flowed more as Mayuko explained how she thought her mask would have been defective, but alas

you listened to her worries of losing control

but that’s not what you were scared about

you were scared about losing her

you only let go when she took a shaky step up

you regretted that as she began to walk towards the exit of the building

and straight for the edge

you grabbed onto her quickly, your own legs shaky, but doing the job to hold her back

you held her tight, pulling her back, shouting at her, crying

but the glint in her eyes, one that was foreign to you

it terrified you

she didn’t throw you off softly either, it hurt

Yuri was quick to grab you, but couldn’t even bring herself to aim at her friend

when Yuri started talking nonsense and collapsing once more, you made no time to go back to her

she may have almost killed you, but you couldn’t stop yourself

you didn’t even pay attention when the angry mask began talking with Yuri

you brought Mayuko’s body against your own, tears streaming freely

Yuri explained how she needed to get the mouthless mask, and how she needed you to stay with Mayuko in case anything happened

you didn’t think twice when you agreed

you laid Mayuko down in a nearby room, a blanket draped over her frame

you took a seat next to her, holding her hand and pressing a kiss to it as you waited

“Y-y/n?” Mayuko’s voice came out shaky a few minutes after Yuri’s departure. Your attention snapped to her quickly, eyes red and puffy from crying, the streaks of tears on your face a show of it. “Mayuko.” You said softly, holding her hands tightly.

Mayuko’s lip quivered, eyes shut tight as sweat beaded across her forehead. The picture itself almost made you burst into tears again. “Get some rest, please, Yuri will be back soon and everything will be okay.

She seemed restless, her body straining to move. You got up a bit, pressing a kiss to her forehead, a sigh to tell her to rest. This time, she listened, a blush forming on her face before her body slumped, steady breaths escaping her to tell you she was still alive.

That’s really all you could ask of her.

A few minutes later, you heard footsteps. That spiked your anxiety for sure. What if it was a mask? What if it was a person? You weren’t the one who had prior knowledge of fighting, as the two did.

Acting rashly, you took Mayuko’s knife, holding it out in front of you. Your arms shook like crazy, the knife wavering in your grasp, but you held on tighter. You had to protect Mayuko, that was your job. Protect. Mayuko.

Mayuko groaned, your attention snapping to her as you silently prayed that whoever was nearby didn’t hear her. The footsteps stopped for a moment, making you think maybe the left, but that thought was cut short as you heard them getting louder.

Louder. Louder. Louder. Until the door to the room swung open, revealing a man with a rifle and a girl with pastel hair behind him. You stood up, holding the knife and standing closer to Mayuko’s side. The man with the gun quickly swerved it around his shoulder to aim it at you.

“Please go away! Go away!” You cried, emotions getting the best of you. “I won’t let you hurt her!” The girl behind him seemed worried, but the mask’s defense did not falter. With a quick move, a shot sounded within the room, and the knife was knocked out of your hand.

You didn’t even register what had happened until you heard the knife clatter to the floor. Your eyes shot towards it, then to the mask, then to Mayuko. Mayuko. You still had to protect her.

Even if it cost you your life.

you stood at the foot of Mayuko’s bed, only a few feet away from the two

the game of cat and mouse continued until the girl behind him started to talk

but after another groan from Mayuko, you thought you’d take her word

but you insisted that the mask stayed away from her

he seemed upset about it, but agreed to stay outside the room

he took your weapon too

when the girl took Mayuko’s hand, you tensed up

you were about to yell at her, but then her body completely relaxed

she didn’t even look alive anymore

you stood at the foot of the bed as she sat there for a few minutes., before slumping to the ground

you ran over to help her, sitting her up against a chair

you looked to her, then Mayuko

and you noticed something

Mayuko didn’t look pained anymore

she wasn’t restless

she was fast asleep

you looked back to the girl, who had begun to regain consciousness

you asked her what she did

if it worked

if Mayuko was okay

and when the girl’s explanation was over, you couldn’t help but let a sigh of relief pass through your lips

Everyone! Tenkuu Shinpan is FINALLY BACK!

It goes under the name of “Tenkuu Shinpan Arrive” now, there are two chapters out currently, and most of us are still wondering if it’s a prequel or a sequel to the original manga. I pray that it’s not a prequel since I was hoping to see the main cast again in all of their glory. The cast was one of the many main reasons people loved Tenkuu Shinpan so much. Ya girl is gonna be pretty upset if I don’t get to see my dear Kuon. Just saying.

Only time will tell if this becomes a legit good story to go along with the original manga or if this is a “As the God’s will” manga situation and poor Yuri and the cast has been kicked to the curb for a new MC to take over the spotlight. We’ll just have to keep reading and find out!

i never picked up tenkuu shinpan because i heard yuri and nise are ~ almost canon lesbians ~ because tenkuu shinpan isn’t even categorized as shoujo ai despite all the evidence backing up that yuri and nise are special to one another. it takes 22 whole chapters for nise to show up (and even in chapter 23 she only appears at the last page) and it takes a while after that to even be sure that she’d stick around as a permanent main character when yuri’s already met a bunch of people that died in 1 - 2 chapters - and even a while more for their relationship to even hint at something romantic. 20+ chapters of me reading this manga and yurinise was just a pleasant surprise at best, not something that i actively expected lmao.

i stuck with this manga because i genuinely like survival manga, especially the ones where the characters get thrown into an alternate universe and they have to fight to live, and yuri is actually an interesting protagonist, believe it or not. she’s a kid with a relatable backstory, a genuinely likable personality, a hidden potential at sharpshooting, and an actual drive and purpose in the story. granted, the fact that she’s a girl is what pulled me in and made me stick to it for a long while because it’s not everyday that you get girls as main protagonists in survival horror manga like tenkuu shinpan, even more so in roles where they actively fight and lead and win.

i’m not being more biased towards yuri and nise for no reason. yuri and nise, even just either yuri or just nise alone, are infinitely more interesting than kuon ever will be, and that’s because of basic storytelling elements. yuri and nise are written to have backstories that the readers can relate to: yuri’s a normal, everyday schoolgirl that got thrown into this mess from one second to another. she’s just trying to find her brother at the start, you know. along the way she learned that despite seeking the familiar comfort of her brother’s presence, she could hold out on her own and even best him. she had a bigger purpose. we don’t see her functioning with a vision as wide as a half nanometer; even when she feels intensely we get a brief read on her thoughts and it’s gone in a snap because she knows how to compartmentalize things. yuri is written to want things, to want to prioritize the people important to her like rika and nise, but she doesn’t just chase after them and let the world around them crumble to dust or continue in its dysfunction. time and time and time again, and i can’t stress this enough, yuri puts others before her. she focuses on the bigger picture.

nise, meanwhile, is written to be someone unwanted. she makes a lot of bad decisions and only figures out that she could be herself when someone finally accepts her for who she is, and that’s touching enough, yeah, but that’s not the point. nise is written with a theme on balance: she finds it hard trying to be good while knowing she’s very capable of evil while wanting to be good while doing evil things to be good. she’s written to just want a sense of belonging and acceptance, to finally not be told that she’s not such a bad person after all. nise at the start is a product of an environment that convinced her that she was a bad person. nise at this point in the story has learned, even just partly, that she is capable of being good, that it’s in her heart to be kind. yes, she’s not done with it yet and she’s probably not even halfway through with how much this manga juxtaposes a lot of her sentiments with her own contradictions (balance! as! a! theme!), but at least that’s that. she follows along yuri and yuri’s sense on the bigger picture also makes the bigger picture nise’s priority.

despite that, yuri and nise’s characters aren’t tied around each other like some convoluted knot. they exist as separate people with their own independent ideas and opinions and they have meaningful dynamics with other characters. yuri has a good dynamic with her brother. she also has a certain dynamic with the dealer where the dealer almost, for lack of a better word, acts as a guide to her. as a leader, she has interactions with almost everyone in her group. she even gets the great angel on her wavelength. nise, meanwhile, tends to stick to yuri’s side, but that doesn’t change the fact that she has a sort of elderly sister outlook for ain and has actual meaningful conversations with both rika and yuka. point is they could exist separately. they have their own network of relationships.

when i say it’s boring having to sludge through kuon’s character and her relationship with yuka, that’s because it is! kuon doesn’t have a backstory that makes sense. she goes to a rich school. where she’s alienated by her peers? for absolutely no reason. it was just generic sad story #3. it’s never seen in her attitude in the manga’s present time exactly why she was alienated; unlike rikuya who actually has a weak constitution that makes him easy to prey on for bullies, kuon is written as, well, basically unflawed. she’s literally generically cute in a way that sets her apart from the two other prominent girls in the series (which are, drum roll, yuri and nise). she starts off blessed enough to just stumble into god’s code. her creepy stalker subplot was obviously hamfisted into the story as an attempt to make her and the masked sniper to connect; unlike any other backstory in this manga we literally never get another reference to it outside of its 9 pages. please.

outside of yuka, kuon barely exists as a character. she has zero, and i mean zero, meaningful relationships other than with her love interest. she saved nise, ok, and? she was with yuri for a couple of panels, ok, and? her point of view is literally written to be focused on yuka, to start and end with him. she becomes his plot device, the one to let the audience uncover his ~ mysterious ~ backstory and humanize him and ultimately save him when he finally shuts down from the angel program. she is only written with emotional depth in relation to the masked sniper. it’s literally canon now; at this point in time she only exists within yuka, only able to communicate with him and having to rely on him to convey the information to the others. the truth? it barely changed the dynamics. it barely made an impact in the others. because that’s pretty much what’s been happening the whole time around, anyways. kuon is boring because there isn’t much substance to her character outside of being the masked sniper’s love interest, full stop. of course anyone with critical thinking skills would be bored reading that.

It has to do with the fact my health, both physical and mental, is dropping fast and low. The only thing I've been able to do is read, this entire week, and even that is hard. I'm trying to get myself back on my feet and the drawing I posted yesterday (Tenkuu Shinpan Beach Episode AU) is a small step toward being creative again, and I'm sorry to say but making the banners is way, wayyy more taxing than a simple doodle - and this simple doodle took a lot. Not as much as I expected, so progress yay, but still a lot.

The Number 1 Rule of Fandom is and has always been "if you don't like the way other people are doing it, then don't complain and do it yourself" fandom is a hobby, we're all doing this for fun and for free

So anon, go ahead. Instead of being a rude little shit hiding behind anonymity in my inbox, take a swing at making the banners, spending hours at a time to find the right panel so it's not too repetitive but still looks nice, to redraw it in the missing parts of a texte bubble or another character, to edit it so it doesn't look too bad when it's with colorful illustrations, to come up with summaries that are both descriptive and concise enough, to make the polls make the bracket update the lists reblog regularly (I've been failing even that, hence why I'm waiting a bit before resuming) see people trash talk your favs in the tags and learn to laugh it off because yeah you do trash talk your fav's opponents too fair enough. Go ahead anon. If you can complain, you can do it too and I look forward to voting in your poll.

Dear @crackinwise​, I hope you don’t mind if I take it from here. As @thesugarhole​ said, I am the Rika/Juo pioneer and I really don’t mind talking extensively about why I ship it.

The answer will contain manga spoilers and everything I say will be backed by manga panels. The translations I use are from Mangabox (official og publisher in English) and Kana (official French edition). I sadly don’t understand Japanese so I have no way of checking that.

Everything, including the inaccurate (if not downright false) informations about Juo, will be addressed under the cut, because it gets long.

First of all....

About Juo

Juo is a later on antagonist. He is a self proclaimed “evil guy” and lives his life the way he wants because he doesn’t fear justice. He thinks good guys are weak and boring and that evil always win (with the claim that he has been proved so because not even once he has been punished for all his evil deeds - and God knows he’d done a lot).

“he murders women”

He doesn’t “murder women”, he murders everybody indiscriminately. He thinks it’s fun to kill and he has done so ever since childhood when he bullied another kid to death. As he says in ch216:

“put the mask on Sniper”

He never put the mask on Sniper: that was Yayoi Kusakabe, a mask under Aikawa’s orders (see chapter 80). In chapter 118 she also says so to Rika.

Juo doesn’t care about any of that. He doesn’t care about God, he doesn’t care about the humans in the realm, doesn’t care about the rules. He’s just an asshole who found a fun playground that rewards him for killing.

The hostage part is true (not his family, tho, just the group he was the leader of before Rika was abducted by Aikawa - aka Yoshida and his masks, Megumi Saito, Kohei Yamanami, Haruka and Azuma + Uzuki but Uzuki wasn’t an hostage, just a backup plan and Rika doesn’t know about Uzuki either way)

Now the “wants to battle Rika to the death”. No. Juo wants to humiliate Rika like he himself was humiliated by Rika. This is pure revenge. He cannot stand that he had to beg for his life and he wants Rika to beg for his in return. Also he’s bored and wants to fight someone strong for once. See chapter 216:

(in French it’s “I’d like to have you at my feet, agonizing and begging me to spare you” which is indeed more brutal and lets us think he probably wouldn’t spare him anyway but we’ll come back to that in the reasons I ship them)

Now let’s get to the main topic

Why I ship Juoka (Rika/Juo)

Reason number 1- shipping is for fun, they’re my favorite characters and I’m crushing hard on both of them so why not

Reason number 2- Yes it’s an “enemy ship”, but a particular brand of “enemy ship”, that is one of my favorite tropes: villain is obsessed with good guy that didn’t kill him, good guy doesn’t particularly care. Villain is Juo, good guy is Rika. 

Boy it really gets me going. He said it and he followed through. From beginning to end, Rika never left his mind one second. This is my favorite trope.

ALSO THIS PANEL. The heart is not in Mangabox’s scans. To say I screamed when I saw it in the printed volume would be quite the understatement. (”Happy to see you again, my dear Rika! ❤”) Another time we get that heart is when Floor 7 (Dealer Mask) flirts with Floor 4 (Miiko Mask). Juo’s in love, I could stop that post here but.

Reason number 3- Everything Juo says to Rika on the phone sounds like flirting. The phone call was the first time we were introduced to him and the things he said are sooo gay like wow

In french he says “In the end, all I want is you, Rika” and god... 

In french he says (emphasis mine) “After that, I delighted myself in killing a bunch of guys that I forced to beg me... But I couldn’t forget you. In the end, here we are, talking over the phone like this. I see a sign of fate, don’t you?” please note it’s the second time in 2 chapters that he brings up fate (despite having orchestrated everything to get that chance lmao)

Reason number 4- Juo is a direct parallel to Nise. Nise is Yuri’s girlfriend. Yuri spared her life and they became partners. Nise is the most obviously queer character in Tenkuu Shinpan and the parallel is so explicit I cannot for the life of me start to think it wasn’t on purpose.

Like, Rika... were you hoping you’d get a boyfriend of what? Anyway, it sure makes clear that Juo’s definitely not straight straight from the start lol

Reason number 4.5: the parallel between Juo and Rika himself.

Once again, they’re put in parallel to immediately separate them. What’s interesting is that Juo is like Rika could have turned out. They both have feminine names, Rika has a baby face, Juo has “weird eyes” (him possibly being mixed? idk), both have been mocked for that and are overly conscious of it. Their reactions were opposite. Rika decided to become a cool and dependable guy, the kind you can’t mock even if you want to. From mocked to protector. Juo decided that if someone had to be the victim, it wouldn’t be him and therefore decided to live as evil. From bullied to bully.

On top of that, there’s a whole thing about guilt, for them. Rika, throughout the story, is shown to be crushed by guilt. Guilt of having failed to save some, guilt not to have been a better leader, guilt of having let Juo go, the list goes on - and Juo’s take on it is this (see below). Opposites attract, was it? ;)

Reason number 5- so far I’ve talked extensively about Juo (and I’m not done about him sorry), but what about Rika? Rika has abandonment issues and about zero self esteem. Then there’s this guy who spent his whole time thinking about him and tells him so, that keeps complimenting him and his fighting ability despite Rika’s protests that Juo is in another league (see below) and stronger than he is, that wants to see him and will stop at nothing to see him again, that tells him they’re linked by fate (shown before). Hell, what do you want?

I think Juo, in his own messed up way, can help Rika. Juo absolutely adores Rika (everyone in canon does, you’ll tell me, but Juo’s the only one apart from Yuri that’s so open about it) and Rika deserves every bit of that affection, without restraint. Juo has no restraint. Rika is burdened by guilt, Juo knows how to shed it. They are complementary in a way that I can’t help feel Rika needs.

Reason number 6- subtle marriage metaphor (+ spoiler for Tenkuu Shinpan Arrive, beware)

There’s the whole thing with Juo being able to resist the code (very sexy of him, if you ask me) and saving the mouthless mask that would have otherwise been destroyed. He kept the mask to “give it to someone who would be fun when acquiring the force”.

Now what does the mask do? It gives a specific set of abilities and a title - here the title “Juo”. Juo kept the mask and wanted to give it to someone in particular. Someone who would be fun. What has Juo been focused on this whole time? Rika. Juo wanted to give his mask and title to Rika - this is both implied a bit obvious considering being obsessed with Rika is like half of Juo’s personality*. (marriage metaphor much? I made a joke comic about it once). He didn’t give it to him, in the end, because he used it to manipulate Okihara into working for him and ended up having to give it to him instead, after delaying it as much as he could. And oh boy was he not happy about it. Panels from ch235

*one of the characters in the sequel is a character having Rika’s appearance and Juo’s title so like. I was right, thank you. He may be neither of them but it’s still there. And an echo to reason 4.5? That character, that I call TSA Juo to differentiate him lol, behaved in a way similar to how Juo does (he changed, later, he allied himself with the MC like the first Juo was thinking of doing), and the clones seem to be what their original could have been but I won’t extend myself - and since a new one appeared recently I may be proven wrong in a few days or weeks anyway lol

Reason number 7- Juo’s death scene and his final internal monologue. I have an entire meta about Juo’s final words but it’s not focused on how gay it is so I’ll do it here. No manga panel because it’s over a few pages lol have the transcript

“Ah… Now, changing my way of living doesn’t matter anymore… Hey, Rika-kun… What other life did I have besides mine? Hey, Rika-kun… I recall now that I really enjoyed talking with you. But I can’t do it anymore… because… I’m going to die soon… Die? There’s nothing I can do..? I don’t want to die.. [Yuri jumping to save him pages here]..I’m going to survive? Going to survive… Going to live… Going to live.. and change my way of living… I’m going to.. change my way of living… I’m going to…” 

Dude is falling to his death and the first thing he thinks about is Rika. He was this close to actually changing. Why would he change? To meet Rika again. He was about to become a better person for him, it was a possibility. Someone who had lived his entire life as evil as possible was about to change just so he could meet Rika again. (don’t mind me screaming at the lost potential)

He doesn’t take Yuri’s hand. He stays true to himself in the end and here’s the meta I’ve written about his death but for a few pages there, the only thing he did was regretting the fact he wouldn’t be able to talk to Rika again. (beautiful beautiful parallel to what Aikawa says to Rika before showing him the code *chef kiss*)

Reason number 8- The mutual respect and the inversion of their intentions. God I love this one. It’s in the fight this time. Like I’ve shown before, they both acknowledge each other’s strength and it’s kinda a recurrent thing that happens in the fight or when they talk about each other, I can’t show it all lol but yeah

Also, about the inversion :D Remember how I said Juo doesn’t want to kill Rika? Well it’s not only because he’s just searching the high of being begged, there’s the whole ‘asdfghfkd i love talking to you’ aspect as well. So Juo, a guy who lives for killing, is fighting not to kill.

And Rika? A good guy who has done his upmost not to kill a conscious human? That always asked masks whether they could talk before attacking? That let Juo go on the basis that he was a human? That, even controlled by Aikawa, resisted the brainwashing in order not to kill Sniper? He’s fighting to kill. To kill a human. 

Just like Rika makes Juo better (or had the potential to), Juo makes Rika worse. Hero corruption is a trope I particularly appreciate.

Reason number 9- Red and Blue dynamics. We have only one (1) colored image of Juo but look at them being red and blue (and Juo demonstrating everything I’ve said about him: one thought, head focused - only Rika)

Reason number invalid- Juo’s hot, Rika’s hot - the both of them makes it hot²

Reason number I’m pushing it- Rika likes big boobs and exposed skin*. Guess what Juo has. That’s right, both. Beware my favorite Juo panel, from chapter 233:

*(this my conclusion bc he’s like “wow” anytime he sees Saito with her torn clothes and according to the bonus pages of vol19, he finds White Feather way too sexy lmao)

Reason number calm tf down elmax- the whole begging thing can very easily be twisted to a sexual/kinky meaning

Conclusion: Juo is gay and in love, Rika is sad and horny. Rika makes Juo a better person and Juo makes Rika worse. And I think that’s beautiful.

Side note: I hc Rika as a bi aro and as such I tend to write and depict Juoka in a way that’s either fwb, soft romo or queerplatonic, with Juo holding romantic feelings but Rika not returning them but still being into him.

As much as I love ripping my head open about Tenkuu Shinpan, nothing beats being unhinged about Tokyo Ghoul with other TG fans like no one is sane here we've all read it too many times and we know bits by heart and just "what the fuck happened here 💀"

As everyone knows by now, they go in the SHIP IT category. They’re my Tenkuu Shinpan OTP (and I am so happy to read you like my rambles you don’t even know 🙈💕)

1- What made you ship it?

Honestly, I don’t remember exactly because 2018 is so far away in my memory and I shipped them pretty quickly but basically it was a mix of “oh shit that guy is hot” when seeing Juo for the first time, Rika being my favorite character since day 1 and Juo’s heavy flirting. I have a tendency to ship my favs together, and I am a weak man for one-sided crushes, esp in enemies/rivals ✌ 

This panel was probably what sealed the deal tbh. Live long this panel, it makes me want to draw them kissing

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Heh, I made a whole post about it, I’m not writing all of it again, there’s so much I like about them, I wouldn’t know what to pick as the favorite thing. Juo’s obsession with Rika is definitely up there tho uwu

3- Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Among shippers, since we’re only like 3, everything I say is popular by default rip but if we talk fandom-wide, then I’d say the opinion that they’re a good match for each other is pretty unpopular lmao

God I want the Juo arc to be animated so that Juo can be hated more widely and I’ll get hate anons gain some popularity due to his pecs and bastard tendencies and maybe it’ll rope some people into my ship. Please I’m starved for content

1 & 10 for the fic asks

1- What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

That's a difficult one. It depends the fandom I guess because I write pretty different things for each fandoms? I... ended up talking too much but here’s a breakdown:

For sk8, Desire or Duty, definitely. This is one of my best works straight up but it's pretty long so as a general introduction to all of my fics it might not be the best, especially since I don't really write romance otherwise.. (i do write smut but not romance idk)

For Tenkuu Shinpan, In This World is the best as a general introduction to my fics and the way I write - that said, most my TS fics are Juoka so I think By Your Side is better to introduce my other Tenkuu Shinpan fics but not my fics in general

For Tokyo Ghoul I'd say either Fathers or The Love You Couldn't Help are a good intro to what I write in Tokyo Ghoul and in general. My TG fics are good. Please read my TG fics. (I want to rec Blood Is Thicker here but I haven’t read it in a while so I’m?? not sure it’s a good representation. I think it is because it’s gen and it’s angst but.)

10- How do you decide what to write?

I go “damn wouldn’t it be heartbreaking if-” and then I write it. That or the horny part of my brain takes control and my ships are rarepairs so I have to do all the work myself >:v Mostly I write what I want to read. That’s why a good chunk of it is angst.
