Okay, so question: why is it okay to monetize fanart but not fanfiction?
Now, please don't misunderstand this question as accusatory or anything like that, I just genuinely don't understand why one is more unlawful than the other
Like I totally understand the importance of keeping fanfiction free so that IP holders don't get up in arms like they used to
And I also totally understand the desire to make some money off of something you worked hard on
But why is one okay to monetize and the other is not? If I write a purely text fanfiction and make a Patreon around my fanfiction I could get in trouble for that, but if I turn that fanfiction into a comic or something similar it's suddenly okay to ask for money? I'm still taking donations for characters and ideas from someone else's story, but I never see the arguments for fanart and fan comics on monetizing that I see on fanfiction
Hell, if I wanted to get really pedantic, you can flat out make videos that show everything about a game or whatever and make money off of that without really changing anything and that's also perfectly acceptable
Again, this is not meant to condone or condemn either side (I love fanfiction AND fanart) it's just kind of weird if you ask me. If you can make money off of one medium, why not the other?
