Spike Jonze's 'Where the Wild Things Are' Deserves Another Look
Back when I saw it in 2009, Spike Jonze’s take on Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” proved to be one of the few movies which I felt really dealt with real kids instead of the cliched ones which inhabit far too many motion pictures. Here, we get a young boy who has quite a vivid imagination which he retreats to when the real world becomes too scary to deal with, and who comes from a…

Demon Turf
Fans of 3D Mario games, in the style of Galaxy, Odyssey, and even the humble 64, this one is for you. Demon Turf, a game made by indie dev Fabraz (with help of Playtonic), is probably one of the most successful of these sorts of games calling back to the height of the 3D platformer dominance. The twist here is that instead of being a collectathon focused sort of experience, there’s more focus on platforming challenges.

They just announced a remake of Yooka-Layle.
Now I would say it's unnecessary to remake something that's only 7 years old, but I'm fine since I did enjoy this game and it's the closest we've gotten to a remake or proper sequel to Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

Played around with Yooka and Laylee's designs yesterday. I'm not the biggest fan of their original looks, and I was unsure how to interpret them.

You said about Yooka-Laylee "...a low-budget game trying to look and feel like a high-budget game." What does this mean, exactly?
It means the game looks real nice visually, on par with a lot of Rare's Xbox 360 output, but:
The controls feel terrible. I guess this is partially because I own it on PS4 where it's capped at 30fps, but it feels spongy and laggy, with slippery collision detection.
Level design is awful, prioritizing size over fun or enjoyment. Levels are five times bigger than they need to be, like the worst parts of Donkey Kong 64 instead of the best parts of Banjo-Kazooie.
The actual art direction itself is abhorrent. The Banjo games could at least hang their hat on the whole "fairytale storybook" aspect of a bear having a picnic in the woods and something something a witch, but Yooka-Laylee is full on spaghetti-on-the-wall random. Cursed shopping carts, snakes wearing pants, magic refrigerators, evil bees... some real F-list work, which is to say nothing about the levels themselves. It may have good visual effects, but it's a REALLY ugly game to look at in terms of aesthetics and cohesion.
It has the vibe of a very hollow indie game paying tribute to all the wrong parts of something beloved. Everything it does right is only surface level. The rest is all sloppy, ignorant junk.
It's the video game equivalent of all those people who post "8-bit pixel art" and it looks like this
They don't really care, or even if they care, they don't really understand.
(Note: I'm not saying the pixel artist did that on that specific piece, but I needed an example)
I'm curious to see what they do with that Yooka-Laylee remaster they just announced, given they've said they're going to rework parts of its gameplay. I'd love it if they got rid of the stupid stamina meter, for one. Or made less abilities rely on it, or something. I can't think of any situation where having that meter made gameplay better or more interesting. It just exists to make you wait until it refills.

There are some games that make me happy just by existing. Captivating little videogames with a joy that radiates to such a degree it infects anybody playing it. Lil Gator Game is one such source of joy, a thoroughly delightful adventure that parodies The Legend of Zelda in the most adorable way possible. It takes place in a world where heroes are always clad in green and wear pointy hats, filled with monsters and stock fantasy characters in dire need of help. Best of all, it’s a world entirely made up by children who are essentially playing a massive LARP.
