I am moving out from here on 14th April. My brother has his jee on 13th after which we will head back home to Durgapur. I have lived here in odisha, my native state for three years now. As a child, we never visited other tourist places much. We only got time to visit our grandparents and cousins. My cousins lived where I live now: Nalco, Angul. I wanted to live here when I was a kid just to stay with my cousins and play with them until I was forced to stay in odisha instead of completely my high school in kolkata like we were supposed too and then living here in Angul was suggested by chacha chachi, so we did, with hopes of getting something good out of it.

I am here only for nine more days. I had arrived here on 15th August where the physics sir had told us to quickly study S block and give a test in two hours. I remember how I felt like crying. We had just reached this place, barely opened our luggage, and I was hearing this neet jee for an hour and then a test. I wanted to sleep, but somehow I studied and I had scored really bad. Like I do often, I ended up crying in the car. I was like mummy dance class band kar dete hai abhi padhai pe hi dhyan dungi. For someone who loves dance a lot, I have told my mother to cancel dance classes because I thought that I wasn't good enough to do both because I was lacking in my studies, and as for every middle class person, job and money comes first and then your dreams until your job money dream everything lies in one single thing.

Well, my dance class continued, I gave my dance exam online, completed learning a few items too, wrote stories and studied hard. I have wasted time too by crying or by simply procrastinating or sometimes I would engage myself in dance or writing for a much longer time than scheduled. And now all of this will end. I will wrap my things again and go home. Now I have lived in durgapur for only a month. I loved it so I am looking forward to it now.

It feels surreal. I wanted to move out of this place so badly in the initial months. I still want too. But now looking back, this experience has made me feel grateful and wiser about so many things. My school friends from kolkata still complain that why I had to go to odisha and stay there, but I am happy I did. As a tenth grader, I lived in my own world and had a pink dream idea of being with my friends, wearing fashionable clothes, attending parties and fests and studying ofc, nothing much.

Over here each and every expectation, every dream was broken. Like they say, to find yourself one needs to lose themselves too, which I did. That was a really dark phase. Alone, with no one and no idea how and why is this happening to you. But some time later I rediscovered myself again. It was art, poetry, stories and dance. It was me connecting back to God, whom I had forgotten in the glitz and glamour of big cities. I read the same ramayana mahabharata and folk tales, but I had begun finding learning lessons from them which as a child I was only enamoured by the story, the drama and visuals.

The things 13year old samridhi enjoyed, I no longer enjoy them anymore. The clothing, the music, the lifestyle everything has taken a 360 degree turn. Once I enjoyed parties and loud music, we used to have some in kolkata sometimes and I loved it. Now, I don't think I can. I want to have friends and make memories and enjoy, but no longer with music drinks and stuff. Somewhere simple and meaningful.

I know that in the upcoming months there are going to be many changes, but these experiences shall stay with me and remind me to be humble and rooted to the ground. I have seen the rich, sparkles and exciting rush and also the slow life, muddy roads, farms and simple people simple towns. There is still more to see in the near future, but to live through all this is a big thing for an 18 year old.

And if it were not sambalpur and angul, I wouldn't have known how strangers can be loving, how certain people hold such a great mark over you and your story, and how colourful life can be.

we'd move every 3-4 years from city to city, state to state. that's the issue with having a parent with a govt job. i see fauji brats and all boast about how they moved every two years and are so cool. no doubt they are cool. so am i. i have learnt to make friends and leave some, to adjust into cultures, food, languages, and habits. i have made peace with 8pm sunsets in ahmedabad and 5pm sunsets in calcutta. i have made peace with neverending traffic noises in delhi and deafening silence in durgapur. i have made peace with humidity and dryness and extreme cold and none at all. i have made peace with small towns and gigantic cities.

but let's talk about how it all affects you mentally. having changed over 6 schools in 14 years of education is no small change. earlier it was fun - because new uniform seemed obviously cooler than the last. but eventually the dreaded reality set in - that I'm seeing it all for the last time on my way to the station/airport. the empty halls when we first entered the house seemed so much emptier when the last carton was loaded on the truck. the last night in a certain room that you have countless memories in made you feel even emptier on the inside. moving from a spacious 2 bhk to a cramped 3 bhk, to a cramped 2 bhk, to a spacious 3bhk so on and so forth. moving from the first floor to the sixth to the ground to the fourth. from quarters to apartments, from lifts to staircases. through all this change the only constant you find is your own self. but boy oh boy will that change as well.

and it messes with you. a lot. when your only pillar is yourself and you don't even know that person. when you're too busy adjusting to exterior changes to figure yourself out. every new school brought a new personality, a new story of who you were and what you were perceived as. you become an accumulation of first experiences and impressions. participate in one debate and now that's who you are for the next three years. join the poetry club and now you're a writer. act, president of drama club. dance, light of the annual function. quiz, smarty-pants. have a boyfriend, never earn a teacher's respect. lol.

from a favourite to a kiss-ass to a sweetheart to a mean-girl to miss popular to a teacher's pet to a loner. i have lived several lives in nearly two decades of life.

some places had common playgrounds. some places had gully cricket. some places had sandpits. while some didn't believe girls even play. i associate some placed with power rangers, some with skating, some with cycling and some with stop-and-party or chor-police. some places had nosy neighbours, some places housed the nicest aunties, some places had dark alleys, some places had bustling highways.

many people know the pain of losing a pet, but very few know the pain of leaving one. the tens of dogs and cats I've fed, befriended, cared for, played with, been scolded for (hehe), named, trained and what not. to see them for the last time, knowing they will sit at my doorstep (which is no longer mine) the next morning and won't be greeted with breakfast, will fill you with nothingness. playing your last game of pakdam-pakdaayi or unch-neech, knowing all too well you'll never be there again. leaving your favourite hiding spot, your favourite swing, your perfectly aligned window, and your painting on the wall of your bedroom in mere years of having found them.

it takes a year. it does. no matter how extroverted, adjusting, happy-go-lucky, accepting person you are, it takes a year to call a place home. to know its streets and secrets. to have memories in unlikely locations. to associate feelings with objects and places. to build a reputation you like. to make mistakes and mend them in time. to find friends of your kind. to make peace.

you enjoy it for a year or two. start missing it before it's over. and when you're gone, everything is the same except you. you are the unfortunate idiot who goes back to square one. and it breaks your heart.

the point of this entire rant is that I'm seeing what happened to me over many painful years of life is happening to everyone around me in these few months of college. the friend in me wants to smile, hug them, tell them it'll be ok because i know it too well (even though theirs isn't as bad tbh). but the sadist in me is shamelessly snickering for what they never understood about me - they shall now live it.

Hidden Causes of Hair Fall

One of the most challenging things about hair loss is figuring out why it’s happening. The list of causes ranges from genetics to medication to lifestyle. While it can be hard to pinpoint the cause right away, knowing the possibilities can help you figure it out.

v      Heredity:

Most of us can blame Mom and Dad for thinning locks, says Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, clinical instructor in dermatology at University of California, San Francisco, and a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss in women.

“Heredity is the most common cause of hair loss,” she says. “The gene can be inherited from either the mother's or father's side of the family, though you’re more likely to be affected if both of your parents had hair loss.”

Hereditary hair loss affects about 30 million women in the United States, the American Academy of Dermatology says. Women with this trait tend to develop thinning at the hairline, behind the bangs, or they might notice more scalp showing or a widening part, Badreshia-Bansal says. The condition develops slowly and may start as early as your 20s. How to know for sure? A scalp biopsy can show if the hair follicles have been replaced with smaller follicles. That's a surefire sign of hereditary hair loss, she says. Applying minoxidil 2 % or 5% (Rogaine) to the scalp can stop further thinning, she says.

v      'Excessive Shedding':

Telogen effluvium is a common type of hair loss translates to excessive shedding. (It’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day.)

This type of hair loss can happen after your body goes through stress, says Amy McMichael, MD. She's the chair of the dermatology department at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem, N.C.

Possible causes include:

a change in medication

flu

Women with telogen effluvium typically notice hair loss between 6 weeks to 3 months after the stressful event. At its worst, handfuls of hair may come out.

Club-shaped bulbs are a tell-tale sign, says Mirmirani, who's also a member of the North American Hair Research Society. The bulbs mean your hair has gone through a complete growth cycle, which may have sped up due to stress.

What can you do?

“In some cases, such as pregnancy or major surgery, reassurance and time is the best remedy,” she says. “If medication is the culprit, talk to your doctor about lowering your dosage or switching drugs. If it's stress-related, reduce anxiety.”

And if your diet isn't great, take steps to improve it.

v      Thyroid Problems:

Problems with your thyroid gland can lead to hair loss.

“Hypothyroidism -- too little hormone -- may cause a host of symptoms, and hair, nails, and skin may become more brittle and break more easily," says Mirmirani. "With hyperthyroidism -- too much hormone -- hair loss can appear as metabolism speeds up.”

Blood tests can confirm whether you have a thyroid problem. Thyroid hormone medication may return your hormone levels to normal and help with hair loss and other symptoms. Your doctor will check every 6 weeks or so to see if you need to change your dosage.
