Like from an outsider's POV Ritsu seems like he's cold towards him or mildly annoyed but in reality he's just introverted and hasn't had any friends before besides his brother

Whatever you think they feel for one another is mutual, whether it's friendship or love or just mutual understanding and sympathy

Like, I can see them argue and be annoyed with eachother's personality once in a while but they care. I like to believe this isn't my bias but canon fact, Ritsu wouldn't have agreed to help Shou otherwise

They understand eachother. Shou tells Ritsu his big ideas and Ritsu understands how he's come to that conclusion and gives criticism and Shou listens to him. Because he knows it isn't an insult, he knows its genuine advice, he knows Ritsu actually listens and wants to help

That has its shortcomings as well, I think they're overestimating how well they understand eachother sometimes, there's a certain degree of projection happening. Their situations are similar but very, very different

What I'm trying to say is that they don't hang out that often but ten years post canon Shou could call Ritsu up after they haven't spoken in forever, unsure if he even has his number anymore, ask for help and still receive it. That Shou would let Ritsu crash on his couch after he impulsively quits his job even if months passed since their last conversation. It's not about personality compatibility with them, its about trust.

What's some of your favorite rarepairs from some of your favorite fandoms?

Ooh that’s a fun one! I'm definitely a big multishipper, and it doesn't take much for me to enjoy a rarepair. Sooo I'm gonna stick to the two major fandoms that have given me brainrot and only name a few because I can ramble for sure haha. I can elaborate more if prompted tho :>

For Mob Psycho 100

QPR Ritshou: Ritshou is by no means a rare pair within the fandom (there is a lot of content!) but I have a very specific vision of them in a queer platonic bond specifically. I like viewing them as more alterous than romantic, mainly because I am attached to the aroace Ritsu headcanon and I love to project. I’d absolutely love to explore this concept in art or fic one of these days because it's very complex in my head! I’d say that brand of Ritshou content might be too self-indulgent for others to care, but I've surprisingly seen some QPR content for these two already!

Tokugawa/Kamuro, Takenaka/Inukawa, and Matsumine (looking at you theo!) also appeal to me (separate from each other ofc)! I like the opposites vibe of the last two and I wish there were more content for all of them. (Though I completely understand why these are rarepairs at the same time haha). In my head, their dynamics all involve quiet/serious guys who secretly enjoy the company of the other a lot, and I think that's cute.

For Psychonauts

Frazie/Sam: I know people tend to hop on the Frazie/Norma train, which is definitely a fun pairing, but I’ve fallen for the idea of Frazie with Sam instead. The comedy potential of Raz finding out his big sister is dating Dogen’s big sister is golden to me. I think they'd get along well! They're both weird woodsy girls who shift between nice and intimidating. I want to draw these two together eventually!

QPR Clem/Crystal: I have an aged-up Psychonauts 'AU' of sorts in my head. These two would live together, and generally be very touchy-feely in terms of affection, but not romantically be a thing. It's a very sweet concept to me! They'd be inspired by Cassie and Compton's relationship while interning at the Motherlobe, and they mostly act as feeble supports to each other's severely low self-esteem! Fun. On a similar note, I think Crystal and Phoebe would be cute romantically.

Maloof and Elka for that matter! I think Nils and Elka would be on and off for a long time, and she'd eventually fall for Maloof's cutesy mafia boss schtick. They'd have a sorta opposites dynamic that'd be cute I think!

I did answer mp100 already BUUUUUT I can tell you my second faves bc I love talking about mob psycho and I will never shut up about it if I have the chance

My 2nd fav female character: MEZATO. I'm a mezato guy until I die, I adore her to death. Wdym this girl basically wriggled her way into a position of leadership in a cult just because she was bored? She's so smart AND she gets herself into really dangerous positions all the time because she either doesn't think or is so passionate about what she's doing (in the moment) that it doesn't matter to her (thinking specifically about when she tries investigating LOL and doesn't realize the position she's in and how dangerous it could be until they're right about to force the hood over her head.) She means a lot to me and she's awesome and I'm so upset we don't get more of her. 3rd is Tsubomi

My 2nd favorite male character: Uhhh I might as well just say Serizawa and my reason bc I guess it's not THAT tmi. He's not actually my 2nd favorite, he's my other favorite, but I didn't talk about him before. His whole entire character growth and arc of finally being able to come out of his room, go straight into being with people who did not care about him and just wanted to use him, but eventually being able to move on and join society again and learn to manage his anxiety and be more confident and just LIVE is so important to me on a level that I genuinely cannot explain to you. The message that it is NEVER too late to start and live your life and become a real, productive member of society despite everything has meant everything to me since his first appearance. I wish I could like grip him by the shoulders and give him the most sincere, emotional Thank You I've ever given anyone. Also ocd serizawa is real to me and nobody gets it like I do. My ACTUAL 2nd favorite is one of the kageyamas. They're tied

2nd character I grew to love: Not LOVE per se, but not hate. I learned to not hate minori MONTHS after I watched the mogami arc for the first time, and I know why but also like. She is a middle schooler. Middle schoolers are shitty and she eventually became a better person and she didn't Technically do anything to Mob. It was mogami

My 2nd anti otp: I don't hate any ships other than the obvious, but the other one I like the least (NOT DISLIKE AT ALL) is emimob. Only because I feel like that goes against the point of the episode, but I could be wrong and I CAN be convinced that they're awesome. Because they probably are and I'm just not seeing it

i hope you don't mind my commenting on your post, @ygodmyy20. this fandom also was kind of a closet key for me with respect to shipping. i didn't understand what anyone got out of shipping at all beforehand.

in my case, it's been about the art surrounding this particular ship, and the fact that MP100 is such an asexual-friendly story. ONE seems to have gone out of his way to frustrate the development of any possible romantic or sexual relationship within the confines of the plot, instead choosing to focus on the underrated joys and complexities of platonic love. i found that focus refreshing and still do. incidentally, that lack of romantic/sexual focus may have freed me up to considering romantic possibilities between these two? a tiny bit?

i think any sort of romantic relationship between canon teru and shigeo is a bit of a long shot, if only because shigeo is fucking oblivious to the idea that anyone would find him attractive as he is and teru is too suave and respectful to be upfront about what he wants. but teru also has an ocean's worth of patience. and shigeo is at least open to spending time with him, if not seeking him out directly for company. (and i realize canon compliance really isn't the point for those who enjoy shipping! it's about possibilities... and so much more.)

the art for this ship (and #shoumob! and #ritshou! and #serirei! and...) is often so tender and sweet and kind. MP100 is full of lost souls who find solace in good company; teru and mob have both suffered so greatly and it feels good to see them find the love they deserve in each other.

that said, while i love the ship art and will reblog the good stuff whenever i find it... i don't find romantic relationships healing or comforting in any sense, really.

Okay so, I've been thinking for awhile on the question: why do I like terumob and why did it take over my brain? What is it about it...what caught my interest. As someone who was very NOT into ships when i first got into mp100, why did I crashland into this one?

This post has been in progress for like....weeks now? Nearly a month? 3 months? Yea.

Okay so. Here we go. THOUGHTS! On terumob and why the fuck I like it. Below the cut.

Like I mentioned, when I first finished Mob Psycho 100 in June of this year I wasn't into any ship. I was actually REALLY NOT into ships. I really liked gen. I wanted to explore the characters and I loved the complex relationships between everyone but I didn't want it to be overshadowed by romance. I purposely steered clear of any and all ship art.

But then I started to see some TeruMob fanart and I was like "Aw man, they are so cute and squishy." And I started to like them....just a lil bit. ONLY A LITTLE BIT.

BUT then I read more Teru-centric fics, read Teru analysis' and then I was like. Oh shit, Teru is 100% so into Mob it's like....this kid has it bad. He has a major crush. And even on the rewatch I am like WOW yep, confirmed in my brain, Teru has it bad. The subtext of his pinning is JUST so there for me. I didn't even have to look hard for it. I suddenly was very in on the Teru-one-sidded part of the ship.

But here's the thing, I'm not a big fan of ships like that... feels too unrequited. Hard for me to really like it. I need to have some level of something from both sides. Just how I am.

So that still leaves the question.

When and how does Shiego liking Teru work? Is there any subtext for that or am I just making it all up because I want the ship to work for me?

(which also is fine ya'll, no judgement if you ship two characters that barely interact, thats the fun of fandom stuff!)

I mean, all things considered, Shigeo likes Tsubomi. Scratch that, he REALLY likes Tsubomi. Shiego loves very strongly, like all his emotions. And he definitely likes Teru, they are good friends, so I kept thinking: where and how does that cross into a crush to me, for these characters?

Teru cares a lot, he adores Shigeo—Shigeo is kind, he is powerful, he is everything Teru wants to be. But are there places where I see this same level of intensity from Shigeo?

Annnnnnnnd then I got to their fight in season 3.

Everything Shiego did to Teru was so pointed. So raw and angry. Like I said, I think Shigeo feels his feelings very strongly and, I don't know, just the fact that he PERSUED Teru to humiliate him EXACTLY in the same way again, tells me that their first meeting had an intense impact on him. We don't see a lot of his feelings on his meeting with Teru, besides the brief ??? in that episode. After meeting Teru, it's just...life goes on as normal for them. But deep down I don't think Shigeo ever really tackled his complex feelings about Teru and their first meeting.

So it all comes out, its all be stewing for AGES, and what comes out is mean. It's aggressive. It's almost sarcastic? It's what happens when we let things chew us up inside and comes out all twisted.

Teru evoked such a strong reaction from Shigeo, even if Shigeo didn't admit it or express it, that I can't help but think, after things have settled, after he has spent more time adjusting to his whole self...after they both take time to really examine themselves and grow....

....that Shigeo wouldn't develop stronger feelings for this boy who also turned his world upside down. Who made him feel such strong emotions, who changed his world too.

Teru was forever changed by meeting another esper his age.

I think Shiego was too.

And I think where I started to love them was after the finale, after Teru's acceptance of Shiego for who he was.

I don't want to pigeonhole any of the espers into only being able to date other espers. But I also....yes, Shiego is a normal kid, but he is also Shiego.

Teru is a person who understands the strength it takes to keep that power, who has seen Shiego at all sides. His best and his worst.

But gosh this scene....

But yeah I just feel like Teru's crush would only grow after that. He would see Shigeo as a person over an all powerful esper.

While I like to think Shigeo's would develop over time and them smack into him like a runaway freight train. Because Shigeo FEELS so strongly, for all his emotions. He feels sadness strongly, he feels love strongly, he feels anger strongly—he just feels everything SO strongly. That is why he is powerful, that is why he is who he is, that is why ??? became what it is.

Anyway. My thoughts have ended and that's all i got. Thanks for coming to my ted talk of rambling mess that has been in progress for months that I realized whelp with the anniversary of the end of S3 nearly here, mind as well post it.

Touch Starved Chapter 1

Rating: G Pairings: Platonic Ritshou Summary:  A series of unrelated short drabbles exploring the importance of touch. This time: Ritsu ponders on the nature of Shou’s expressions of affection. Crossposted to AO3: Chapter 1

Heey welcome everyone to my self-indulgent excuse to write cute cuddles and hugs and stuff like that. As a human development major I've always been fascinated by the concept that human beings require human contact to be healthy basically and also I have a lot of touch/affection headcanons that I want to write about so I decided to combine them into this! Hope you like, if you do be sure to drop me a like or a reblog, it helps out a lot!

It doesn’t take very long into their friendship for Ritsu to realize that Shou can be pretty… touchy. Not in an overbearing way - Ritsu would have distanced himself pretty early if he had been - but in a noticeable way nonetheless. His touch is usually quick and fleeting, gone before you have a chance to process it, but it’s constant. A hand on the back here, am arm around the shoulders there, a tug on the hand or a pat on the knee or an elbow teasingly in the side. Done and gone before Ritsu can say anything about it.

At least, that’s how it starts.

Shou becomes bolder with his touch over time. He has a tendency to stand in Ritsu’s space, close enough to be noticeable but with enough distance that it doesn’t become uncomfortable. Still, Ritsu can’t help but watch Shou in his periphery whenever he stands close like this. He leans away when Shou leans in, if only because the sudden proximity startles him in a way he doesn’t really know what to do about. Ritsu has a distinct respect for personal space that Shou doesn’t seem to hold, at least not around him, and it’s evident in the way he casually squeezes in beside him on the couch when they hang out at Ritsu’s house, knee knocking against his and arm draped behind him as he reclines.

It’s as though there’s a gravity pulling him into Ritsu’s space, keeping him always just a bit closer than Ritsu’s anticipating. He doesn’t mind it, not really, but it never ceases to surprise him, those first few months they call each other their friend. Ritsu’s never been a very physically affectionate person, and neither is anyone else in his family. Of all of them, Shigeo is probably the most likely to give someone a hug, and even he is distinctly aware that most people aren’t so receptive to that kind of forwardness. Shou doesn’t seem to notice this at all, somehow. Perhaps it’s his foreign ancestry influencing him, the same influence that turns his hair that bright red color and his eyes that chilling blue. If it is, he never says, and Ritsu never asks. It’s not so important anyway, he rationalizes. It’s part of what makes Shou who he is, and, well, Ritsu likes who he is.

Sometimes, when Shou is feeling particularly bold, he’ll sag against Ritsu’s side, or kick his legs up into his lap, or lean on his shoulder over the back of his desk chair to see what kind of homework he’s working on when they study together. These moments come along much less often than his usual, lighter touches, and for a long time, Ritsu’s always surprised by them. Shou’s the only person in his life outside his family who dares to get so close without permission, but Ritsu can’t find it in himself to complain.

He knows, rationally, that he’s not so quick to accept this kind of touch with everyone. If one of his classmates came up to him and decided to throw an arm around his shoulder or grab him by the hand, he’d probably jerk away immediately and question why they felt they had to be so forceful, but Shou has a way of making that kind of contact feel comfortable in the way few others can. As time goes on, Ritsu finds Shou’s arm around his shoulders less and less shocking. The way he stands just a bit closer than is totally comfortable becomes happenstance and fades into the background of all the other ways Shou likes to make his presence known.

He confides in Ritsu, once, about why he’s as affectionate as he is. It’s partly his family’s influence, from back before his father started planning his scheme for world domination, when their family had been close and happy and an affectionate touch was part of his daily life. The rest of it comes from afterward, when that daily contact had been taken from him and he’d found himself craving it. Touch starvation, he calls it.. Ritsu’s never heard of such a thing before, but the way Shou describes it is achingly familiar.

Ritsu stops being so surprised after that. When Shou leans on him now, or grabs him by the elbow and drags him along on whatever scheme he’s cooked up, Ritsu lets him. It’s an adjustment, at first, being subjected to Shou’s level of constant contact, but over time Ritsu finds himself more and more used to it.

He quickly learns that, on some days, Shou’s habits are similar to the way a dog might worm its way into its master’s space and insist on being pet, uncaring if their attention is needed elsewhere. Today is one of those days, it seems. Ritsu reclines against the corner of the couch, balancing a book on the arm of it as he attempts to catch up on his readings for school. His eyes droop disinterestedly as he skims the pages without really reading them, bored. The longer he tries to hold his position, head propped up on his hand as he angles his neck awkwardly to see the pages of his book, the more difficult it becomes, but there’s little room to move.

Shou’s curled up on his side like a cat, facing the back of the couch. His head is nestled into the corner between Ritsu’s hip and the space where the couch’s cushion disappears beneath the backrest, his shoulder pressed against Ritsu’s thigh. He’s curled his legs up onto the cushions with him, and he stares at the screen of his phone with half-lidded eyes. Across the room, the television plays a local news station quietly, mostly just to have some background noise to fill the otherwise silent atmosphere. It’s a quiet, peaceful moment, more so than they usually are whenever Shou comes over to hang out, and Ritsu revels in it. As much as he can appreciate Shou’s energy and enthusiasm, he tends to remember these moments more fondly. The quiet settles over him like a blanket, pleasantly warm and heavy, as he feels Shou’s back move against the side of his leg in time with his breathing. It makes his own eyelids feel heavy, and he suppresses a yawn behind his hand. He lets his book fall shut, giving up on reading it for now.

“Hey, Ritsu?” Shou asks, shifting positions as he lets his phone fall to the couch beside him. He moves onto his back, the top of his head pressed against the side of Ritsu’s thigh, and one of his arms flops over his friend’s lap.

Ritsu hums inquisitively, lifting his head and blinking a few times to bring himself back to reality. “What’s up?” he asks, and has to fight back another yawn as he does.

“You’d tell me if I was making you uncomfortable, right?” Shou asks, a surprisingly self-conscious edge to his voice that Ritsu isn’t anticipating.

Ritsu blinks, still half-asleep, and sits up fully this time, glancing down at Shou curiously. He quirks an eyebrow at his friend, tilting his head. “Er, yeah, probably,” he replies, not quite sure what’s brought up the topic or why Shou’s asking at all. “Why?”

Shou cracks a smile. “Just wanted to make sure,” he replies, and Ritsu notes the way he seems to sink just a bit deeper into the couch, the tension in his shoulders easing. “I just get worried sometimes, I guess. I know you’re not a very touchy-feely guy, so, uh, if I ever get a little too comfortable or something, just… let me know.” He raises a hand to cover his mouth as he speaks, his final words coming out muffled. Ritsu’s familiar with the gesture, which Shou uses to hide his embarrassment.

Ritsu glances away, if only to halt the flush of warmth that crawls up his neck uncharacteristically in response. “You worry too much,” he says cooly, reaching up with one hand to rub at the back of his neck. “If I wasn’t okay with it, I would have said so a long time ago.” He swallows back a brief flash of apprehension before adding, lamely, “If you ever need, like, a hug, or something like that, you can ask me. I don’t mind.”

Shou stares up at Ritsu’s face for a moment, eyebrows raising in quiet surprise, and then his face breaks out into a grin. “Dude, that’s so cheesy,” he teases with a laugh, curling up onto his side once more and hiding his face from Ritsu by burying it in his lap. “I’ll let you know if it comes up,” he adds after a moment, softer.

“Yeah, you do that,” Ritsu manages, finding himself slightly breathless. Shou’s head is in his lap at this point, taking up what little space Ritsu had left to read in, but he can’t bring himself to be annoyed. Instead he turns to listen to the news blaring quietly in the corner, and settles his arm around Shou’s shoulders comfortably. They don’t move off the couch until Ritsu’s mother calls them out for dinner an hour later.

as local ritsuposter, curious what your thoughts on ritshou, or at least their friendship, are. theyre my personal fav mp100 ship bc i think theyre hilarious, like what the hell is wrong with them.

i think i prefer them as friends or qpps to romantic (Cannot imagine them kissing. hashtag aromantic), but their dynamic is awesome either way. they’re ride-or-die in the way that only closeted queer teens with familial issues who only met each other 5 minutes ago can be. their first interaction was ritsu being beaten unconscious and their second was when shou faked ritsu’s death burned his house down and invited him on a fun patricide trip. they match each others freak to a level that would be dangerous to the public if they didn’t balance each other out enough to be almost normal if you ignore that they’re both kind of lunatics. they’re Polite Young Boys who would pause their shenanigans to help an old lady load her groceries into her car. they fucking go fishing together they’re fishing buddies. actually hold on i drew a post canon ritshou thing like 2 weeks ago (featuring my transfem ritsu headcanon)

tldr i’m not one for romance typically and especially not in a show like mp100 that has such emphasis on platonic bonds but also ritshou is awesome they’re so.
