Tyrus in 3c

I’ve gotten a lot of asks about what might happen with Tyrus in the rest of the season and I’ll use this post to answer them all. We can already tell by the fact that they started this story line without the audience actually knowing that TJ is gay and that he and Kira only have 3 eps left that most of this plot is going to be subtextual and off-screen. Things have to end on at least a strained note for Tyrus in 3x15, the real question is whether they reconcile in 3x19 or if they only end up on good terms again as they confess in 3x21. The latter is always an option with Disney’s restrictions but there are some reasons to be cautiously optimistic that we’ll get the former and I have to blindly hope that TJ and Cyrus won’t be made into victims and will be allowed to be the heroes of their own stories. This will be a long post but tldr: what we know of Kira’s screen-time suggests that she’s largely redeemed by the finale, some sort of big gesture is likely needed for TJ to truly apologize to Cyrus like a rap or hug, it’s noteworthy that TJ’s scenes in 3x19 are all at school, and there are some interesting similarities between what’s going on with Jandi and Tyrus and noticeable differences between what’s going on with those ships and Muffy.

TJ and Kira have 3 eps left while Marty has 4-5 and Amber has 6 so already we can tell which story lines are most important. TJ disappears for three eps after 3x15 which is the longest he’s been away since he returned this season and the longest they seem willing to let the important love interests be off-screen. The gap is largely because the wedding is in 3x18 and TJ isn’t allowed to be there but eps 16-18 are likely to span at least several weeks in universe and suggests an opportunity for off screen growth and change on his part. Perhaps most importantly we know for the finale that Raquel was only on set for one day and that was the same day that all of the other main and recurring kids were on set so Kira is not going to get very much screen-time in the finale which along with the fact that she is even at the party suggests she’s already on good terms with Cyrus and TJ.

We know that Raquel was on set for only one day for 3x15 and it seems likely that Luke was only on set for a day as well during the filming of an outdoor basketball game with teen boy players; probably the same set up we saw in 3x13. This must be where Cyrus tries to talk with TJ but doesn’t really get anywhere, it will be interesting to see how angsty of a note they end on and if it’s meant to be something that sticks with us or something that they want us to forget about until 3x19. Fwiw it does look like TJ is wearing the same camo hoodie in 3x15 as he was in 3x07 so an angsty callback to’’ you’re the only person I can talk to like this’’ may be in the cards. Raquel never posted from set during 3x19 (presumably that’s when she appears though if she for some reason needed to have solo scenes with Cyrus she could potentially appear in 3x16 or 3x17). She wasn’t seen in any of the casts posts from that week so she likely wasn’t on set for more than a day for that ep either. 

Three days of filming spread over 3 eps means Kira will be lucky to have more than 5 minutes of screen-time the rest of the season and that her redemption arc will have to be fairly quick. I have to hope that her redemption arc will begin in 3x15 when she realizes or is made to realize the hurt she’s caused TJ and Cyrus. Since Raquel confirmed that Kira knows what’s up with Tyrus I’d expect that the only way to redeem her would be for her to become TJ’s Buffy and support him in his sexuality as Buffy has with Cyrus which would mostly happen off screen but since they’re willing to let them have solo scenes could begin in 3x15, maybe with Kira offering to hear TJ out if he wants to talk. We need to see something from her that shows that she’s not an evil person and that she can learn to do the right thing. 

I’d expect this plot line to look like a peer pressure/manipulation/being true to yourself plot line to little kids and the fear of homophobia story line it is supposed to be for older audiences. It looks like they’re trying to show a coming out story line where the fear isn’t internalized homophobia such as it was with Cyrus but external homophobia but I think that difference will escape much of the audience. We’ve seen TJ be so happy to hang with Cyrus at school or the park or at the spoon or at his work or with his friends so I wonder what little kids think of him suddenly being afraid to be seen matching with Cyrus. 

Where does this leave Cyrus after 3x15? Again the audience has never had it confirmed that Cyrus likes TJ so that affects how the audience sees this conflict. Is he going to be allowed to talk about what’s going on with his friends or will this just be ignored until 3x19? Letting TJ be able to have solo scenes with Kira means that the show can wall this plot off from the rest of the show until 3x19 which is the route they’re going, I fear. 

For Cyrus I think this will primarily look to him like TJ is ashamed to be close to him which is why I find it noteworthy that TJ is at school in 3x19 especially since before the re-shoots 3x19 was the last time the show filmed scenes at school. Cyrus feeling that TJ doesn’t want to be close to him would be devastating for Cyrus even if he’s not allowed to express it on screen. They had TJ say I’m sorry for the first time in 3x13 and he can say it again to Cyrus but I think TJ needs to show Cyrus that he’s important to him. 

Jonah left Cyrus upset after refusing to wear their matching jackets in S1 and even though Jonah didn’t realize or care the hurt he caused Cyrus he did end up making it up to him by publicly praising him at the awards dinner and giving him a space otters jersey and a hug. I don’t think TJ’s apology would get anywhere near that level of attention but I think another rap is likely but this time it’s a more personal message from TJ to Cyrus. Or something like a hug or a callback to’’ He’s with me’’ from 2x08, something that shows Cyrus that he’s important to TJ. I’d imagine Kira would have to help out with whatever spurs their reconciliation so the audience at least doesn’t hate her anymore. I’m not saying TJ has to jump on stage and rap or hug Cyrus on stage but some sort of moment at the school in front of at least a couple of other people is needed for Tyrus to move past this conflict.

Luke was on set for two days in 3x19 and he and Josh had at least one wardrobe change so we’re probably looking at more than one day in universe. The potential Jandi and Tyrus scenes at the game could be very important as I’ll get in to in a bit. It also looks like TJ may have scenes with Buffy and Cyrus and Cyrus has a scene with Gus in the theatre which suggests Cyrus is getting more focus than usual and could be set up for a callback to 3x13 where Cyrus was miserable on stage but in 3x19 he’s happy. 

So far in S3 Tyrus has been cycling through all their big moments: muffin, swings, dyscalculia, and somersaults. If the pattern holds we should get a look back in 3x15. I do think the audience needs something to show that TJ is gay and has a crush on Cyrus if this plot is to have any hope of succeeding. It mirrors something that @cyrusgoodboye noted after S2 aired; that in 2x12 Andi listed all the things Jonah had failed to do in what she thought was their relationship and then in 2b Jonah did all those things in the order she listed as they rekindled their relationship. 

One thing that really caught my eye in 3x13 is the out of nowhere Jandi/Tyrus parallel they threw in with both Jonah and TJ letting down Andi and Cyrus (though for obviously different reasons). All of the GHC have a thing for sporty white guys but Andi and Cyrus have a more specific type: green eyed captains with hidden depths and secrets and poor coping mechanisms; which is why the both liked Jonah in S1. Andi and Cyrus are more alike than they are with Buffy just as Jonah and TJ are more alike than they are with Marty. Jonah and TJ have been written as foils from the beginning of TJ’s arc and the show even invented a past for them and has now established them as friends. 

In contrast things are going much smoother for Muffy. The show could have dug into Marty icing Buffy out but the show blamed Buffy and dismissed it out of hand. That’s not to say they won’t have drama and angst but ‘’the boy I like has a girlfriend’’  is an order of magnitude less than the issues Andi and Jonah and Cyrus and TJ are facing. What’s also interesting is that Muffy is the only endgame couple that are together by the wedding. We know that Machel sinks in 3x17 as Marty is at the wedding in 3x18; he’s not there as Buffy’s platonic plus one. But obviously Tyrus doesn’t canon until 3x21 and Jonah singing You Girl to Andi isn’t until 3x20 which seems like that’s the big Jandi get back together moment. So both Jandi and Tyrus having scenes together in 3x19 shortly before they canon is very interesting timing and opens up the potential for more endgame parallels.

Another reason I think there may be another rap is that Terri does like to recycle her work and Cyrus realized his crush on TJ during the first rapology and during the second he could realize that TJ likes him back; it’s like poetry it rhymes. It would also create another parallel between Tyrus and Jandi as both of their love interests make a big gesture. 

That’s not to say that Tyrus will get anywhere near the attention Jandi or even Muffy gets, it’s far too late for that, but it is interesting that the writers seem to be linking Tyrus with Jandi more so than Muffy; it does suggest a certain ambition on their part even if those ambitions are frustrated. 

There are lots of interesting paths for the show to take in 3x19, but as always when it involves Cyrus’ story line, it’s a question of what they’ll be allowed to do. We have Andi and Jonah and Cyrus and TJ in the same scenes for only the 3rd time in the show and the first time they’ve been at the same game since 2x18. There’s potential for Jonah to call back to his ‘’are they friends’’ line and they’ve gone out of their way to make Jonah and TJ friends, will there be any pay off to that? Jonah knows that Cyrus is gay and knows what a look back means, Andi knows that Cyrus is gay and suspects TJ has a crush on Cyrus and is only allowed into Cyrus’ sexuality story line rarely, Buffy would be at the game and she knows that Cyrus is gay and suspects that TJ has a crush on Cyrus and has always been Cyrus’ staunchest supporter, hell Cyrus even has scenes at the spoon with Amber who knows what look backs mean.

The posters we saw in 3x07 spell out the endgame of all this; for TJ to take pride in who he is and for Kira to learn to respect others. Does TJ resuming his openly affectionate ways give Cyrus the confidence to decide to come out to him? The narrative is asking TJ to in a fairly quick time span be okay with being out to the whole world; something it has never demanded of Cyrus. With Andi, Buffy, Jonah, and Kira all knowing about them does that mean Cyrus and TJ will be allowed to act coupley in front of everyone at the party after they confess or can only those four other characters know? Does TJ even have scenes with Marty and Amber? Bex and Bowie are at the party and Bex likely knows that Cyrus is gay from their talk in 2x07 and both of them know who TJ is from 2x18, are they allowed to be the supportive adults who congratulate Cyrus or must they be kept in the dark as well? I can only hope that Terri managed to convince Gary Marsh  to  let her pull off a satisfying arc in these remaining eps

For the give me a character thing, how about Jonah?

How I feel about this character: Honestly...not a huge fan of Jonah. I like his development over the course of the show a lot as well as the importance of his anxiety storyline, but overall I don’t love his character. I know this is kind of an unpopular opinion, but I just have never liked him very much. I do appreciate his character arc, though (even if I think that it wasn’t as well done as it could have been in the 3rd season...)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Libby!! mostly Libby tbh. Or no one, because I kinda headcanon him as aromatic. But who knows! I really have only shipped him with Libby, though.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: JANDI OMG. I love platonic Jandi! Also, Jonah/Cyrus’s friendship is so pure.

My unpopular opinion about this character: As I said before, one of my least favorite characters. Not that I don’t appreciate him, but I just prefer most of the others to him.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Jonah seeking help for his anxiety!! I think this would have been really, really important because it could show kids that it’s normal and okay to seek help for mental health issues (remove the stigma!). I think that this topic would have been perfect to explore in a season 4, too.

andi mack season two thoughts

so the coming out scene made me sob. the fact that it was so goddamn relatable. the fact that both buffy and cyrus were close to tears. the fact that cyrus wasn’t even the one to say it, that buffy just...straight up realized what her friend had been feeling all along. also, the fact that cyrus clearly is going to gain more confidence over the fact that he’s gay. it doesn’t have to be a sad gay story to hit all the right points. it can be happy and still deal with rejection of your identity, which is something nearly every lgbt kid goes through.

i hope we have more buffy filled episodes in the future, because she’s hands down the best friend in the good hair crew, and she was so good in this episode! 

look, all y’all hating on jandi better stop once it develops, because its actually getting really cute and while i know jyrus would be ground breaking for disney, the amount of dislike you show towards jandi isn’t going to change the show’s direction, and jandi is important to, it’s important to asian girls, especially ones who’ve been labeled as ugly or unlikeable because of their (asian) appearance.

amber??? using boyfriends to cover up her insecurities, probably never showing any real feelings for them?? idk sounds pretty gay to me i hope she becomes more well developed

seriously amber has great potential, and i love seeing her being a friendly person who’s just trying to help her family. also she’s redeemable because she’s a 14 year old girl, and jonah clearly feels enough sympathy for her to push past the hurt he felt.

speaking of which: jonah and amber would make awesome platonic friends and no one can convince me otherwise 

also: cyrus and iris? not great as a couple. great platonically, and i hope iris is cool about his coming out because i honestly want them to be friends. cyrus needs more people like him in his life, i think.

this episode made me lose like all hope in jyrus, but i’ve accepted it, because if disney doesn’t give a cute love interest to cyrus i’ll riot.

i really hope she matures over the episodes with a boyfriend, because i’m nearly 100% certain jandi’s not going to last, so she’s gotta get something out of it am i right

So many things to unpack about this NEW ANDI MACK!!! ~spoilers ahead~

-Chinese New Year at the Mack household was a LIT one. Shout out to the ancestors!

-Aunty Mae is a shade queen and I want more of her. Celia can equally match her tho, and their dynamic is comedy gold

-Jandi got me shook cause they’re CUTE and I love the parallels between Jonah and Bowie trying to impress the Mack sisters on Chinese New Year

- “you’re wearing white, the color of death. But sure come on in!!” Celia thought Jonah was selling magazines 💀

-My child Buffy is trying to make history and fighting equality by auditioning for the boys team!!! I love that her athleticism is part of her story but hope we get more about Buffy! I wanna meet her parents!

-I love the subtle hints at ‘Barty’ even though their relationship seems to stay platonic. I can see Marry getting frustrated with Buffy with her competitiveness

-I’m glad they’re showing Buffy’s depth by having her say she’s nervous and realizing that she’ll have to be not just as good but better than the boys

So what are you expecting from andi mack season 2?

Hello, so Yeh I think I can class this as 2 categories,because what I’m expecting from season 2 is probably what we’re all expecting,but I also think maybe if we think deeper there might be other things that cropup as part of the whole story arc.

So first of all the obvious:

Jyrus vs Jandi

Oh here we go, another love triangle but for the first timein Disney. A love triangle that seriously could become an amazing story arc.Something that could change history for Disney US and also transform theprogression our generation keeps making. That is of course the Love trianglebetween Jonah, Andi and Cyrus that we weren’t expecting.  This love triangle is going to be painful,first of all you have best friends Andi and Cyrus who do everything togetherand have a lot of things in common especially talking about Jonah.  What happens this season when things start toget more awkward because Jonah is both cared for by Andi and Cyrus in a differentway from friendship? I’m expecting awkward conversations, secret looks of painwhich we will analyse till death, unintentional fights due to keeping things asecret for a long time. Explosive but also I’m expecting questioning offriendships which I guess should mean we’ll get to see a different dynamic fromthe relationship we already know from Cyrus and Andi, I’m expecting us to evengo into the past and see how their friendship was formed, what they mean toeach other, I’m guessing we’re goanna be leaving season 2 heartbroken for oneof them.

Bex and Bowie Dilemma

I think this one is pretty obvious. I already said I’mexpecting to see a parallel/shadow characters from Andi and Jonah and Bex andBowie coupling story arcs. First of all I’m expecting her to reject theproposal. If she doesn’t I’m expecting it to end by the end of season 2. I’mexpecting awkward conversations with them as well, Andi feeling loss of notbeing able to control them how she wants, (feeling betrayed by Bex rejectinghim etc) and even a jealousy story arc with both of them dating new people anddoing that whole “platonic friends with unsaid feelings for each other”arc.  I’m expecting them to be core dramathat leads to Andi maybe spiralling and regressing/growing from the situation. Itsgoanna be BIG

Muffy

I expect them to get together by the end of season 2. Thisone is not a far stretch but they will definitely be dating sometime by season2. But it won’t be easy Muffy fans, I know, I know it’ll be annoying. Reason Itruly believe Buffy would be the reason for why it won’t be easy. She justseems unintentionally self-destructive, especially like when it comes torelationships and things she can’t control. Another recurring theme I’ve beenmentioning Control. Every character will definitely be struggling with that.  Peep Maya Hart from Girl meets world, that’sexactly how I think Buffy is like. I also expect us to start to see herrelationship with her father (I’m expecting him to have a strained relationshipwith her to be honest or even honestly be dead) I think Buffy’s growth arcalong with any guy she gets interested with will be very slow, but there’s noway Muffy wouldn’t end up being together. Just first we need to delve more intoMartin’s character and see what he offers to her world as well. (Again they’rekids so love is not really yet in the picture, but a pure bond could be formedand I hope Muffy develops that)

NON OBVIOUS

Jonah character development

I say every time that Jonah is one of the best Disneycharacters that has ever played his role before. That role of being popularaloof crush who is stuck between the main characters. First of all he has somuch depth that could really be explored and discovered. He seems to haveissues with dependency on his popularity, he doesn’t seem to make a lot of ‘true’friends, and he easily seems emotionally abused in his relationships. So I doagree with him when he says he doesn’t need a girlfriend right at this time, becausehe need to first love his self and find himself before he can do that. I dobelieve Cyrus brings out that side of Jonah though, I think even more than AndiCyrus seems really heavily cared for by Jonah a lot. So I want to see what thatdynamic would be. I’m expecting more of Jonah to be a wall a lot when it comeswith Cyrus. Fear is a crippling thing that causes friendship dynamics tochange, and if Jonah is also going through questioning himself Fear would be firstthing he would cling to, I think we’re starting to see him go a wall with Cyrusafter their ‘unofficial’ date by not wearing the jackets etc…

How much of that fear though is to do with the way he isaround Cyrus?  I don’t know I’m expectingthat answer for season 2. (Probably the final)

I’m guessing these characters would be linked to the Jyrusvs Jandi and Bex and Bowie storylines, as romantic rivalries. I seriouslybelieve we may get to see another guy for Cyrus in season 2. But I’m not surehow I feel about that yet. If there is someone it’ll be a slow burn.

More topics that are important for this generation- Moreabout race, emotional abuse, loneliness , abandonment maybe, LGBT, politics etc…  (This is Disney)

- I think you and Lizzie would really get on well

- While she’s loud and boisterous, she also carries a serious side, which I think comes from the fact that she’s a Phantomhive

- Lizzie can sometimes upset people without meaning to, and even when you say nothing, she’d feel terrible and would cry over her mistake; she’d certainly go to great lengths to make up for it

- She’d bring some light and warmth to your life, especially in the moments where the dark is harder than usual to contain

- You’d both be very protective of each other, woe betide anyone who upsets or hurts either one of you - together, you’re a force to be reckoned with

- She’d also encourage you to spend a little less time in your daydreams and a bit more time being productive

- Slightly ironic, I won’t lie. but hear me out

- Your procrastination would intrigue him - why are you putting off what needs to be done? What are you thinking so deeply about? Why do you prefer your own company over other people’s? And the questions would go on...

- He’d be greatly interested in your soul - not so much as he is in Ciel’s, of course, but your soul has been tainted too because of your past, and he’d want to see how it affects you in every day life.

- BUT despite the fact he’s a demon, he’s also going to appreciate your humanity - the humanity that he knows will kill people for money and also for their own survival, and the fact that you have compassion despite everything you’ve been through, will intrigue and surprise him.

- So. She’s a lot like Lizzie, I think, though she has her fair share of darkness, too.

- The two of you would bond over shopping and having your own dreams - whether you share them with each other or not is silently agreed in the moment

- Misa would understand your devotion to God and the importance of keeping promises - she’s entirely dedicated to Light and would do anything for him - this mutual understanding would definitely pave the way for a strong friendship

- You’d spend nights together, pampering yourselves - maincures, pedicures, hair treatments, skin treatments... the full works. You’d make your own home remedies and Misa would get all the ingredients

- You’re both very protective of each other, for sure.

- Very protective of you - you’d be his one motivation for living and for doing what he needs to do to get to where he wants to be. Simply put, you’re his reason

Marty Parties On?

I won’t be able to watch and review 2x25 until Saturday so I’m going to focus on the shocking news that Garren is back in Utah. But first quick thoughts on what ep 2x25 establishes: Jandi is almost certainly endgame, looks like it’s Bowie’s mom rather than Gabriel who shows up and I have no idea why people are freaking out over the TJ and Buffy scenes in the promo, it’s clearly all part of his redemption arc, and TJ looking back is obviously at Cyrus who’s looking back at him! Tyrus confirmed.

First off this is all premised on Garren not just appearing for one ep. I find it really unlikely that they would have Marty return for just one ep to reinforce that Muffy is over. That would piss off the audience who quite liked Muffy and would be a waste of time and money for the show. Plus, the show already made clear that Muffy was over in 2x07, 2x21, and 2x23, any hope that the casual audience had for Marty’s return is extinguished by now. I’ve read that his character on General Hospital is or was in a coma recently so he obviously has some free time. The show has done some stupid things but I don’t think they’d go to the trouble of bringing Garren back just to sink Muffy one last time.

We know that S3 will have around 25 eps and next week and the week after they will be filming eps 10 and 11. 1x11 had Andi walking away from Jonah, 2x11 had the swing set scene that launched Tyrus, and 3x11 could have the return of Marty. The timing is also interesting because it’s very likely that the show will be split up into 3a and 3b and the split would likely happen between eps 11-13. 

Muffy had the best chemistry of the het ships and the audience will be very pleased that Marty is back so it’s not like they’d have to spend a lot of time re-establishing their dynamic. I don’t think Garren would have to be in more than 4-5 eps between eps 10-25 to make endgame Muffy work.

Marty’s departure in 2x07 whether voluntary or forced did grave damage to Buffy’s story line which really went off the rails in 2b. The crush was an obvious last minute addition that leaves Buffy crushing on Andi’s boyfriend or her sloppy seconds. 

I think Juffy would have worked well but the path to getting there would be messy as hell and would likely alienate much of the audience. Wuffy comes out of nowhere and they have nothing in common. What would they do? Jog around Walker’s murals? Since Jandi is likely endgame, Jonah is out of the picture, TJ is for Cyrus so he was never in the picture, which leaves Walker.

I think the audience would find Wuffy very confusing as Walker was clearly established as the cool art guy for Andi to be tempted by. And keeping Walker around even if it’s just to date Buffy seems like it would remind the audience that there is another, and many would say better, option for Andi. There’s no foundation except that portrait Walker drew of the GHC so they’d have to spend time actually making them work. But we know that Walker appears in 3x01, probably 3x03, and I believe one more after that at least and he got a last name which only important characters get. So what’s his role then?

@tjkiahgb suggested that the writers needed a twist for the end of S2 and decided to make Buffy have a crush and make it look like it could be either Jonah or Walker and then decide who it was when they came back to write S3. I now think he was right but they weren’t trying to decide between Jonah and Walker, they were waiting to see if Marty could return. 

Buffy could very well date or at least flirt with Walker in 3a only to find herself less sure of her crush on him. If Walker isn’t a love interest he may be written out later, if they try to do a Muffy vs Wuffy triangle Muffy would win hands down unless Garren had to leave again. He could maybe stay as Andi’s platonic art friend though, perhaps he can help Andi make a cool gift for her parent’s wedding. 

Gambling on Marty coming back in S3 is a ballsy move on Terri’s part but she may have reasoned that the pay off would be worth the risk. That Marty is reappearing suggests to me that they were really struggling with Buffy’s story in S3 and didn’t think Wuffy would work long term. It seems like it was a fairly recent move but I think it could be the shot in the arm the series needs in S3.

I had written a speculative post about where Muffy may have gone if Marty didn’t leave and toyed with the idea that Marty would return as the first male cheerleader at Jefferson Middle School and it remains a possibility. I do think it’s likely that Marty will reappear after one of Buffy’s games on the girls basketball team she founded. Again this is all dependent on Garren being able to appear periodically throughout 3b but I’m feeling hopeful.
