Did You Know? Lexington, KY's First Buildings Were Made From Bark

Bark was a significant building material in early Lexington
Did you know that bark was a significant building material and construction method in early Lexington? In 1783, Colonel William Preston built his home on Main Street using the “brick and log cabin” style that many settlers used in the 1780s when they settled in Kentucky. The clay that was used to make these bricks came from the banks of the nearby Kentucky River. Clay bricks were laid horizontally along two sides of a rectangular structure while logs were laid vertically on top of each other at right angles to those brick walls.
Bark was used in the 'log cabin' portion of the brick house on Main St.
But did you know that the log cabin portion of this house was built in 1786? The logs were made from bark and were used as a building material in early Lexington. Bark was a common building product for homes because it was plentiful, easy to obtain, and could be shaped into many different forms. Today we take pride in our city’s rich history and culture, but it wasn’t always easy growing up here!
Log Cabins were built with bark in the 1780s on Short Street
You see, in 1780, Lexington was still a very young city. But log cabins were built using bark. Bark was used to cover the logs on all four sides of the building—to create a shape like this:
As you can imagine, this would have been pretty uncomfortable during the hot summers of Kentucky summers! But that wasn't all they did with bark...
Bark was also used in early homes, churches, and businesses in Lexington, KY
Did you know that bark was also used in early homes, churches, and businesses in Lexington, KY?
The first log cabin on Main St. was built using bark from trees. It stood until the late 1800s when it was replaced with a brick building (which still stands today).
It is an interesting fact about Lexington, KY's history
The early settlers of Lexington, KY used bark from trees to build their houses. They would cut down the trees, strip away the bark, and use it as a building material. This was done because they didn't have any money or other sources to use for building materials like brick or stone.
It's an interesting fact about Lexington's history!
