Crisis on Planet Earth - A Review
Review by Edward Soderbergh
The show was set up as a kind of game show/adventure/story, and centered on the quests of random audience members as they went through a progression of games in furtherance of their mission. OUR mission. The performers used these games to quite seamlessly (or when not seamlessly, hilariously) tie one scene to the next.
I was half way back in the theater, and felt like I was part of the action. My meager contribution to the mission was little more than chucking a dodge ball at a caricature of an 1800s Chimney sweep summoned by an evil paralegal. Even so, I felt I was a part of the whole adventure as Captain “Ace” guided us from one challenge to the next.
Ace was joined by other colourful characters on the “good” side, and stifled at every turn by a lively group of villains on the “bad” side. Every encounter culminated in a game, the results of which had an impact on how the story ended.
The best part of this show was how quickly PDF built a spectrum of characters, and how they played off each other. They kept me invested, they made me care about their mission, and I couldn’t help but laugh at their exploits.
Planetary Defense Force's “Crisis on Planet Earth” is written and performed by Andy North (who also directed and produced the show), Cynthia Kmak, Aaron Amendola, Keith Hand, Jamie McCabe, Sarah Albritton, Sam Roos, and Matthew Sevcik.

Opening Tonight: "Crisis on Planet Earth" from The Planetary Defense Force
Preview by Fin Coe
The Planetary Defense Force - Game Show Improv? Nerdcore Commedia Laszi? A Sci-fi version of what Legends of the Hidden Temple could have been?
Opening tonight is PDF's latest show: Crisis on Planet Earth.  The recently-expanded crew of PDF consistently put out fun, weird, interactive shows where the audience is as much a part of saving the world (or the galaxy, or the Universe) as the performers onstage.  I first met the crew of PDF where everyone meets everyone, at a bar, and hearing them describe their thing was instantly intriguing.  An unabashedly geeky long form, with audience-interactive games that meaningfully steer the story and action?
It sounded right up my alley.  And when I finally managed to catch their show last year at the Chicago Nerd Comedy Festival, I was delighted when the show lived up to my high expectations.  Home-made PVC-pipe spacedragons abound, along with space cops in unsticky fake mustaches, and surprisingly ruthless audience member foamsword battles.
Now, the Planetary Defense Force (and their newest recruits, the audience) start a new adventure, Thursdays in March at the Public House Theatre.  It's a fun time, so catch them while you have the chance.
