shoutout to dead apple akutagawa proving he is perfectly capable without his ability and that he is not only a mindless rabid violence machine but can assess situations and strategize in the spur of the moment and is generally more capable than anyone (dazai) makes him out to be beyond mindless violence
shoutout to beast akutagawa for being given the chance to use his ability for more than violence and to learning there is more to him overall than violent acts and he can be kind and use his ability in ways that does not harm and that there is sometimes a place for violence but it is not the only approach

When Oda found out Akutagawa went to take on Mimic by himself, he did not see Dazai's feral subordinate that almost everyone on the PM feared.
He saw a child, one that Dazai appreciated (in some twisted way) and that child was certainly going to die, so he went to save him.
It's strange to me how Akutagawa never brings up Odasaku again, given that he literally saved his life.
Aku did resent Odasaku for being just an unremarkable guy that had all of Dazai's attention. Did his perception of him changed after the Mimic incident? did he blame (correctly) Dazai leaving the pm on his death? did he just not care?

Dazai's eighteenth birthday would be arriving soon though he only graced Chuuya with a singular comment on it, standing on the balcony and voice so low it was barely heard, "If I cared, who would I be?"
Chuuya laughed at that, answering without thinking, "Certainly not our demonic prodigy." Neither said a word after their exchange, Dazai taking it upon himself to enter their darkened room and disappearing beneath the sheets. Chuuya followed soon after him, pressing his ear to hear the steady beat of an invulnerable heart.
When he awoke, there was nothing and nobody.

I love seeing Kyouka and Akutagawa's interactions in Dead Apple. Sure, they don't seem particularly fond of one another, but their interactions with each other are still interesting.
I like this line, here:
Before Atsushi could ask him to clarify, Akutagawa said, "Kyouka... with your assassination skills, you could easily kill me, now that neither of us has our abilities." "..." But Kyouka didn't reply to his taunts, and Akutagawa smirked at her expressionless face. "What's wrong? I thought you wanted to cut ties with me once and for all?"
its kind of personal? its not cutting the ties with the Mafia, its cutting ties with him specifically. i also can't help but wonder if he's a little bitter kyouka has also now betrayed the mafia to go join the agency like dazai but i don't believe they were close enough for that to have much of an impact beyond recognizing the repeated pattern itself.
but also, later,
"Because he has information... and we can use the Port Mafia's secret passage, Kyouka replied in a matter-of-fact tone. "And most importantly, he'll be a powerful asset in battle once he gets his skill back. Our goal is the same: Eliminate Shibusawa."
There's no if. I'll always love Kyouka's bluntness. She's fully confident Akutagawa will defeat Rashomon and regain his ability, without a doubt. They clearly have a certain level of respect for each other's abilities (Akutagawa conceding that Kyouka could easily kill him) if not respect for one another as people. The way Kyouka's mafia history is acknowledged throughout Dead Apple will always be interesting to me in general because it keeps proving useful but she keeps clearly hating it, poor girl. It all comes back to the grey morality of bsd, but I could go on and on forever about that.
Especially knowing Dead Apple has to happen relatively soon after Kyouka joins the Agency, its so interesting to see kind of where everyone lies with it. Technically speaking, as far as we know, nobody has really betrayed the Mafia so openly and been able to tell the tale afterwards since Dazai. (I don't count Ango since he had inherent use as a cross-agent.)
I just love Kyouka in general I should talk about her more. Akutagawa too for that matter.

atsushi and akutagawa's abilities immediately attacking each other in dead apple instead of like, staying on target and trying to kill their users like theyre fucking supposed to in the fog is the funniest thing ever btw.
second is akutagawa wanting to see which ability wins instead of like, doing something

🏳️‍🌈 Akutagawa ?
i really need to do more footwork on akutagawa analysis to have a good answer for this one, i criminally do NOT think about him enough.
in my head, for gender: if you ask him, he'll say male. he's masculine-aligned, as far as that phrase will go. that's his presentation for the most part. for actual identity? in my heart and head he just kinda went with it but i think its dubious how much he actually cares and if he was actually asked about it he'd just call the question stupid and ask what the hell it has to do with the task at hand. up in the air how far he's actually thought about it for himself.
whatever he's attracted to he's gonna be mad about it, but he's mad about a lot of things, so that kind of gets buried. wouldn't have a definite answer for this one, but probably also more attracted towards the masc presenting side of things because that's what he's used to so it makes more sense to work past the angry-confusion to figure out oh maybe i don't hate this guy that much
i just don't think akutagawa himself thinks much about these things and deals with them as they come and just kind of goes with whatever works for him? if that makes sense at all. like. he's a guy that doesn't care much about the fact that he's a guy it just kinda happened that way
ask game

going back to this actually. remember how in beast, junichiro and akutagawa were able to bond over being older brothers? like that was how they made their "we're not so different we can get along" track. this friendship could be really funny from a they're-both-in-the-mafia perspective. then again the reason ryuunosuke was so Like That about being a brother is because gin got yoinked by beastzai but that's besides the point. i think they should get to be big brothers of very murderous assassin sisters in the mafia and also be friends because i just think it would be good for them.
let me preface this with i'm not up to date with bsd still and only vaguely know what's going on via osmosis. but listen. one thought i have about the whole 'what ada character is going to end up in the mafia' thing? the tanizakis.
like we all know a popular theory is big brother tanizaki ending up in the mafia because he's just the right amount of unhinged, plus his stealth ability could be useful (and imagine how that could be used under verlaine's assassin training.)
but more scary to me than jun'ichiro ending up in the mafia is naomi following him there. naomi scares me. i've only talked about here briefly here but naomi is crafty and conniving and all of that. and... remember, gin is ability-less too, and with verlaine's training they're one of the top assassins. naomi has already been trained a little on manipulation by dazai. combine that with verlaine's assassin training? she'd be scary. the thing about mori choosing one of them is that the other will follow, hands down, and the two of them with the right training and the threat of the other getting harmed should they act against their agreement? it would be really, really fun (read: terrifying). mafia naomi is such a scary thought and I kind of want to see it happen.

You know how in atla when Zuko starts questioning his objective and actions he feels physically sick and has a fever? In bsd when Akutagawa stops killing people his stress levels skyrocket and i think, when it comes to stubborn characters that's a cool way to portray making a choice to challenge one's beliefs and change as a person
