He's 5'9, barely above Mark's height, he does wear high-shoes however, but even then he's just the same height as Mark, he got into an accident on his previous ship, where he was trying to fix the engine, didn't go so well and now he has a robotic arm*

Before working on the invincible 2, Jeremiah worked as an engineer on an old freighter from 203X, a lumbering beast it was, the ship wasn't the best, but it did the job, said ship is said to be scrapped

Jeremiah decided to primarily plan the cities, while other people do the other things, at first he was planning to go with a 1950s-style city, reminiscent of his home, but then went with a mix of modern and 1900s style architecture,

Mark is basically Jeremiah's best friend, like, they did the dumbest things ever just because they wanted to, Celci is basically like Jeremiah and Mark's mom, always talking about 'you shouldn't do that, it's dangerous', Burt is fren, Jeremiah and Gunther sometimes go to the in-door range in the ship, Jeremiah doesn't dislike Mack, but he doesn't like him either

one thing i really appreciate about foolish is how hes so willing to learn and try new things like this stream, duolingo, pkw, and even when he first went to LA and tina was surprised about how much new food he was willing to eat

yeah !!!!!! its crazy to think that his duolingo arc only started because quackity joined stream for maybe a minute or two a few weeks ago and was only speaking in spanish and foolish was like oh i didn't understand what he was saying i should learn ! and now he has like a one month streak,, and even with pkw like he put in so many hours on the server and his movement has improved a ridiculous amount like listening to dream talk about how fluid his movements are makes me so happy like yeah go foosh :] he's honestly just super open to trying new things and it's always super fun to watch

20.08.2022 CH-Gampel - Gampel Open Air

Wenn der Wecker eines Musikers morgens vor 8 Uhr klingelt, dann bedeutet das eigentlich, dass man was falsch gemacht hat. In etwa so, als würde man als Segelfluglehrer auf einem Schiff aufwachen. Heute morgen klingelt der Wecker bei einigen von uns sogar schon um 5 Uhr, was wiederum bedeutet, dass man sich normalerweise sofort wieder hinlegen sollte, und bis zum darauffolgenden Tag durchschlafen, weil sicher keinesfalls etwas Gutes aus diesem Tag werden kann.

Heute ist das aber tatsächlich anders, da heute auf unserem Plan (ja, wir haben tatsächlich einen Plan…also zumindest dann, wenn uns jemand diesen Plan mit den Worten „Hier, euer Plan.“ überreicht) steht:

20.08. CH-Gampel, Open Air.

Auf diesem besagten Plan steht außerdem „600km Anfahrt“ und „Achtung, fieser Grenzübertritt“. Wir wissen also sozusagen über alles Relevante bescheid.

Da seit Corona die Welt etwas Kopf steht, gestaltet sich auch die Transport und Crew-Planung bei Bands etwas komplizierter als sonst. Heute:

Bus: Bei dieser Strecke wären wir gerne Nightliner gefahren. Den Nightliner, den wir gefunden hatten, hatte allerdings nur 750kg Lademöglichkeit. Damit wären wir überladen und somit sofort an der Grenze erschossen worden. Also fahren wir mit einem Transporter und meinem Privat-PKW auf eines der größten Festivals in der Schweiz.

Licht: Unser Lichtler Sebastian kommt von weiter her, in die Schweiz gibt es keine Direktverbindung von seinem Wohnort, deshalb muss er mit dem Fernbus mitten in der Nacht zu uns fahren. Der Sitzabstand im Bus ist so gering, dass seine Füße auf der ganzen Fahrt den Boden nicht berühren, da seine Knie in der Rückenlehne des Vordersitzes kleben.

Merchandise: Es wird dort vom Festival verkauft, was einerseits cool ist, andererseits bedeutet, dass ich 10x am Tag mit schweren Kartons durch besoffene Festival-Besucher stapfen darf und am Ende so nüchtern sein muss, dass ich bei der Abrechnung nicht über den Tisch gezogen werde.

Backliner: Kein einziger unserer Backliner-Kandidaten kann heute, was bedeutet, dass sich der nette Thiado aus der Mark Forster (!) Crew, bereit erklärt, den Posten zu übernehmen. Mark Forster spielt heute ebenfalls auf dem Festival. Dieser alte Death-Metaller.

Wir fahren also zu viert in zwei Fahrzeugen 6,5 Stunden lang in die Schweiz und haben mal wieder panische Angst vor dem Grenzübertritt. Wie aber schon beim Greenfield Festival ist eine ganz zauberhafte Zollbeamtin für mich zuständig. Etwas älter, super nett, so jemand, würde ich mir als Tante wünschen. Sprich: Wir sind drinnen im Land, ha!

Nach der Fahrt durch sagenhaft schöne Schweizer Landschaften (unfassbar dieses Land, wenn nur nicht Spaghetti Napoli plus Fanta umgerechnet 460€ kosten würden) und einigen falschen Abbiegungen kommen wir auf dem Open Air Gampel an und ich parke meinen Audi zwischen fünf 40-Tonner Trucks und vier Nightlinern. Irgendwie süß.

Backstage begrüßen wir Shenja, ihres Zeichens Max´ Freundin und Mark Forsters Produktionsleiterin, die netten Veranstalter, unsere halbe Crew und ganz besonders die netten Herren, die im Raclette-Stand arbeiten, DER IM BACKSTAGE-BEREICH STEHT! Wie gut kann ein Tag eigentlich noch werden?!

Show-technisch haben wir etwas Schiss, weil bei den Bands vor uns eher wenig los ist und wir uns innerlich schon auf ein nettes Stelldichein mit 4-7 Fans einstellen. Als wir dann nach drei Portionen Raclette aber auf die Bühne gehen, stehen da mächtig viele Leute und wir sind einfach nur sowas von happy, dass wir heute schon zum dritten Mal in diesem Sommer ein richtig fettes Schweiz-Festival spielen dürfen. Und wie die Leute abgehen ist auch einfach nur krass. Schweizer sind einfach nochmal ein Stückchen durchgeknallter als der Rest. Im besten Sinne. Max ist sich sicher, dass das am vielen Weed liegt. Da Max in 20% aller Fälle komplett recht hat, glauben wir ihm auch das.

Gampel, wir haben es oft genug auf der Bühne gesagt, aber das war heute echt fett. Ich weiß echt nicht, ob ich schon mal nach einer Show so viel Muskelkater im Gesicht hatte vom andauernden Grinsen. Kein Scheiss.

Nach der Show esse ich die Raclette Portionen 4-7 und schaue dem DJ Lost Frequencies zu, der viele Welthits und der die Leute ziemlich im Griff hat. Ich frage mich dennoch, ob er irgendwas auf der Bühne macht, oder einfach nur so tut, als würde er etwas machen. Kann es noch nicht abschließend beantworten. Was ich weiß ist, dass er vermutlich 80x so viel Gage bekommt als wir, haha.

Nachts fahren wir noch ein Stücken zurück in Richtung Hotel und am nächsten Tag kommt das, worauf wir eigentlich schon seit der Abfahrt zu Hause gewartet haben: Eine Drogen-Kontrolle am Zoll! Ha.

You know, I really like Gilina. Or, more correctly, I really like what Gilina represents, both in terms of Crichton’s development and in his feelings for Aeryn. Gilina is Earth Crichton’s dream girl: she is blonde, pretty, sweet, and plucky (she is no push-over). She is also a girl geek, and a techie and for our scientist, that’s quite irresistibly appealing. (Btw, let me take a moment to note how much I like that the show showed us that Crichton had a type in women, B.A. (before Aeryn): they were blonde and sweet and had a certain safe niceness to them. Aeryn is not blonde, not sweet, and not safe at all. And neither is his feeling for her). If Gilina was a girl working for a research institute on Earth and she and John met at some party, I can easily see them talking, dating, falling in love and getting married. And having a happy married life. And the John of ‘PK Tech Girl,’ despite some unpleasant encounters in the Uncharted Territories is still enough of the Earth John to be attracted to Gilina, to be at the very beginning of developing something for her. He is still enough of an innocent, with enough uncomplicated and sweet left in him, for Gilina to be his type. But of course, that is not the case any more when they meet again in ‘Nerve.’ When they meet again, Gilina has had a fairly uneventful PK tech existence. She hasn’t changed much. But she is not Crichton’s type any more. Not after Maldis and finding out firsthand that there are psychopaths that will just enjoy watching you die for the fun of it, not after Crais and finding out that no, if you only explain the truth, it won’t make it better. The person will still want to kill you even if they believe you, even if it’s wrong and irrational, and there is nothing you can do. Not after ‘Jeremiah Crichton’ (my least fave ep of the whole show, but whose theme of Crichton’s long isolation is well taken). Not after finding out the truth about Zhaan, or almost dying out there in space with Aeryn. Not after the mind and soul fuck of ‘A Human Reaction.’   Gilina is not for this John. Not any more. And it’s not just that in the meanwhile he’s ceased to see anyone but Aeryn. It is also that his character has changed. And that is only the beginning. When he meets her in ‘Nerve’ it is pre-Scorpius, pre-Aurora Chair, pre-everything in S2, 3 and 4 (I’d do a list but it would take too long to type). If Gilina met S4 Crichton, she’d freak and run away and rightly so. A digression, but I find it fascinating how John's non-Aeryn women reflect his change. We have his ex-gf on Earth who he was serious enough to apparently want to propose to, before they went their separate career way. She is sort of like Gilina only blander, less engaging (Earth Crichton strikes me as someone who's had things come to him too easily because of his intelligence or what not. His passion (for whatever) was never truly engaged to the full, and the gf reflects that.) There is also Caroline (who we meet in Terra Firma) with whom he had something or other, but she is rather like his Earth-ex and it's clear the Crichton of TF doesn't even have anything to say to her any more. From them, we progress to Gilina (about whom see above). In first half of S2, there is the PK Disruptor. Now, she is a lot more edges, more hardness. If she is like anyone, it's a female version of Bond. And Crichton sleeps with her, because hey, he's tried everything to get Aeryn to admit any interest, he's beaten his head against the rock and he's beaten it and beaten it. But she refused and she's conclusively walked out of his life for good (not even came to see him for the very last time, when he needed her most). And also, girl can kill him, good to stay on her good side. There is no Gilina sweetness in her, at all. PK Tech Girl Crichton would annoy her and be intimidated to be with her, not so much Crichton of that s2 ep arc. But interestingly, that is the last time he even looks at another woman, no matter the circumstances. Once Aeryn and he admit their love to each other at the end of S2/beginning of S3, that is it. Even at the second part of S3, when Aeryn is off with Talyn-Crichton, Moya-Crichton goes deep into his obsession with wormholes, not any girls at all, and he is just as obsessed with Aeryn as ever. Even after the end of S3, the beginning of S4, even after he tells Aeryn "I can trust you with my life. But not my heart" and he locks himself away, he still does not look at anyone else. He cannot. And even the drugs cannot knock her out from his mind. Which is why his last non-Aeryn woman is Grayza, who rapes him while at the same time telling him if he gives her the wormhole stuff she will help him find Aeryn (OMG, that bit is seriously the worst in the whole scene). I think the darker progression of these women-others mirrors the darker and darker universe. OK, digression over.   I find it interesting that in S1 we have a number of people (beings, whatever) whose life is affected, changed by Crichton and who are grateful for that and thank him for changing/opening/saving either explicitly, or it’s implied. But after S1 this slows to a trickle pretty fast and then stops almost entirely. Crichton is such an innately kind person, and one of the saddest things in the show is seeing this kindness leach away under the tortures (literal and figurative) he is subjected to. I find it so sad and so significant that in the S3 finale it’s Aeryn who brings up the fact that the command carrier has a lot of lives which John’s plan might end. Aeryn. Not John. She’s become more compassionate (she, who started out saying ‘I hate that word’) and he’s become much less. These are both reactions to their environment, to events they are in (When they initially meet, she is a product of an individuality-less, soulless scenario. Even if he is wrong in reading her at the very very first in Premiere during intros, he is not wrong in reading her potential, in recognizing she is a person, and even as early as Premiere she proves him right. I also love that for Crichton, she is always her own person, not a preconceived notion of what she should be. He loves her for being Aeryn, not for some idealized being in his head). And yet it is never completely suppressed, it is always there, however muted and downtrodden, however circumscribed. He had to jettison most of it in order to stay sane and to survive, but somewhere deep inside he is still the guy who, in a completely strange world, took the time to fix the eye-stalk of a mechanical critter thingy he didn’t know at all.   And of course, part of the reason he jettisons it is also because whenever he tries to save someone or make it better, it often ends up making the situation worse. I am thinking for example of S3’s lovely ‘Different Destinations’ which turns a beloved sci-fi trope on its head and he has to live with it and he can barely bear it.   And I love how the show never lets us forget the cost this takes on him, that he is not a power-hungry psychopath, a cavalier callous being only caring about his small group of friends. That coda to S4’s ‘We Are So Screwed’ where he is with Aeryn, and he breaks down, and he can’t help it, and he weeps for what he’d done, for what he almost did (and it’s going to be small fry in comparison with PKW) is just brilliant and heartbreaking and one of my favorite bits (and I love that she is there, and she silently comforts him, and he clutches her arm as a lifeline). And that is why I actually liked the drug storyline in S4. After all the stuff that Crichton been through, I am surprised he didn’t end up going on something earlier, just to deal with it all somehow (I love that the show brought up earlier that he has nightmares, feels tremendous guilt, and that was mid S2, I am sure they are much worse now). And it also made sense that when his number 1 obsession, Aeryn, told him to give it up, he did, as he’d pick her over anything. She’s his number 1 drug. Basically, he needs Aeryn desperately. She is what allows him to function, allows him to stay (relatively) sane, what holds him together. When he can’t have her, or doesn’t have her, he falls apart and needs something else to get through the days (wormholes in S3, lakka in S4). I do find it interesting that Crichton keeps his compassion, however tattered, but he develops absolute priorities, as a result of choices he shouldn’t have had to make. Most people don’t really analyze whether they will pick the woman they love or selling one’s soul and giving up something which earlier, to protect, you didn’t give up even when tortured or hunted or broken. They don’t have to. Crichton’s developed rigid priorities are a result of the environment where he had to confront those hierarchies in himself. Crichton’s earlier ‘purity’ and goodness and optimism exist in part because he is a product of a relatively sheltered life (compared to Uncharted Territories). But that early cleanness allows others to see a better or at least a different path for themselves and so they repay the favor later by pulling him out when he is on the brink of succumbing to all these horrors (which really do seem to be scarily disproportionately triggered at him). One of the things I love about Crichton is that even after he’s seen and dealt horrors, he has a certain moral absolutism to him (however broken it gets at times) and a pure refusal to give up, and strength even if only to make the least worst of two bad choices presented to him. Something untainted is always there, maybe a legacy of his initial idealism, and so he never breaks, not permanently, not irreparably, though he comes very very close. Throughout the show, even as that world bends and molds and twists him to its own parameters, he manages to make the world somewhat bend and mold and twist to himself.   Do you know what I really really wish for John and Aeryn and the kid after the end of PKW? A few years of total peace, where they can just travel the space in Moya, and John can do his research, and be with Aeryn and watch their child grow, without having to worry about saving his and their lives every other day.

I've always found parkour really satisfying to watch when it's someone like Fruit or Techno or Pete and I've always watched Fruits pov of mcc so I personally never really minded parkour warrior but I completely understand how it was unfair and unfun for people who weren't good at parkour (lime llamas mcc 11 really opened my eyes to parkour warriors frustratingness)

:( yeah watching any hermit pov of parkour warrior really shows you like the opposite end i think and it’s horrible to watch . i do think parkour is a necessary game style (?) of mcc (as much as movement, pvp and building is) so that’s why i think parkour tag is a lot better way of implementing it in an mcc style game . i can understand missing and enjoying parkour warrior (one of my favourite videos is dream beating pkw and then helping techno michael and burren #teamspirit :() but i also feel like at the same time people need to realise how unfun of a gamemode it was for anyone who wasn’t a god LOL so instead of wishing for pkw back i feel like we should just like . appreciate pkt more Smile

Wer mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zur Arbeit pendelt und dabei die Computerzeitschrift c’t lesen möchte, hat mit der passenden App eine gute Möglichkeit, diese am Handy oder Tablet zu konsumieren. Sitzt man aber am Steuer des eigenen PKWs, sollte es schon eine gesprochene Fassung sein; eine solche gibt es aber bislang nicht. Mit etwas Handarbeit und „Text to Speech“-Vorlesefunktion (TTS) funktioniert dies mit einem Android-Handy sogar ohne permanente Internetverbindung recht gut. — Nachfolgend findet sich meine Lösung zum Nachmachen.

Lässt sich die aktuelle c’t dort als PDF-Datei (mit persönlichem Watermark) herunterladen, hat man das passende Abo. — Nebenbei bemerkt: Ich gehe davon aus, dass die nachfolgende Vorgehensweise auch mit den Schwester-Zeitschriften der c’t des Heise-Verlags funktioniert, also iX, Mac & i, Technology Review und Make.

Die heruntergeladene PDF-Datei ist eigentlich bereits eine gute Basis für die Vorlesefunktion. Die Erfahrung zeigt aber, dass beim mehrspaltigen PDF-Print-Layout mitunter unpassende Vorlese-Reihenfolgen entstehen, und dass sporadisch mal Kopf- oder Fußzeilen mitten im Text erneut zu Gehör gebracht werden – das ist natürlich unschön.

Idealer Einstieg: Heise Select

Den besseren Einstieg bietet die Online-Ausgabe der c’t unter „Heise Select“. Hier lassen sich alle redaktionellen Bestandteile der aktuellen Ausgabe in sauber formatierter HML-Fassung direkt im Browser lesen. — Obacht: Bitte stichprobenartig überprüfen, ob man hier tatsächlich tatsächlich angemeldet ist und die Volltexte sehen kann, siehe Screenshots.

Ist das tatsächlich der Fall, sind alle Vorbedingungen erfüllt, um den redaktionellen Teil in Form einzelner HTML-Dateien pro Artikel auf den eigenen Computer herunterzuladen, die für die Vorleser-App deutlich besser zu verdauen sind als die im Print-Layout formatierte, monolithische PDF-Datei. Allerdings wird man schwerlich jeden einzelnen Artikel mit der rechten Maustaste anklicken und so deren HTML-Fassungen einzeln auf die Festplatte speichern wollen.

Kekse für wget

Daher geht es nun in die Kommandozeile – das ist ein bisschen nerdig, aber hey, wir reden hier ja von der c’t und nicht von einer Modezeitschrift. Also: Ein bisschen Einsatz bitte!

Gefragt ist das kostenlos verfügbare Open Source-Kommandozeilen-Tool „wget“, das alle HTML-Dateien in einem Rutsch ohne fehlerträchtige Handarbeit bequem auf den eigen Computer herunterlädt. Ist wget auf dem jeweiligen Computer noch nicht vorhanden, lässt es sich unter Linux meist recht einfach per Paketmanager nachrüsten, am Mac empfehle ich dem geneigten Nerd den Weg über Homebrew. Für Windows findet man wget z.B. unter diesem Link.

wget stellt einen „Browser ohne Fenster“ dar, lädt die besuchten HTML-Dateien herunter und folgt den darin enthaltenen Links, um sicher zu gehen, keine Datei zu vergessen. Korrekt konfiguriert kann man auf diese Weise einen entsprechenden Teil des WWW auf den eigenen Computer kopieren, auch „mirrorn“ genannt.

Würde man wget nun allerdings ohne Vorbereitung auf Heise Select loslassen, würde man nur die gekürzten Ausgaben („Sie wollen wissen, wie es weitergeht?“, s.o.) mit dem Login-Hinweis herunterladen. Das ist nur allzu verständlich, schließlich verfügt wget nicht über die Anmelde-Cookies, mit denen der Heise-Webserver dem Desktop-Browser den Zugriff auf die Volltexte gewährt.

Folglich müssen wir das Cookie-Jar des Desktop-Browsers nach wget transplantieren. Dabei hilft den Nutzern von Google Chrome die Browser-Erweiterung „cookies.txt“.

Sie dient exakt dazu, das komplette, zum aktuellen Download-Pfad gehörige Cookie-Jar in einer .txt-Datei zu speichern, die wget verdauen kann. Anschließend erhält wget dieselben Download-Befugnisse wie das ursprüngliche Browserfenster.

wget – übernehmen Sie!

Meine eigenen Cookies von heise.de habe ich in einer Datei namens „cookies-gero.txt“ gespeichert, die Namensgebung ist natürlich vollkommen beliebig. Derart gewappnet geht’s nun endlich an den Download. Meine Kommandozeile lautet am Beispiel der am 29. Februar 2020 erschienen Ausgabe 06/2020 (in einer Zeile!):

wget -r -l 1 -k -E -p -np -R jpg,jpeg,png,gif,pdf,css,js,svg --cut-dirs=2 --load-cookies cookies-gero.txt https://www.heise.de/select/ct/2020/6/

Im Klartext (vgl. Manpage zu wget): Wir laden rekursiv, folgen also den Links; wir bleiben aber bei einer Link-Tiefe von 1; wir konvertieren Links, wir passen die Endungen an; wir laden Inline-Bilder herunter; wir verbieten das Parent-Directory; wir interessieren uns aber nicht für Bilder und andere Downloads; die ersten beiden Dateinamens-Ebenen der URL sollen beim Speichern aus dem Dateipfad abgeschnitten werden, damit es auf der heimischen Festplatte etwas übersichtlicher bleibt; dann wird noch das aus Chrome heruntergeladene Cookie-Jar eingebunden. Und endlich geht es ab dafür – mit der zur aktuellen Ausgabe passenden URL.

Bei mir dauert der komplette Download der 70-80 Einzeldateien meist ca. 3 Minuten – wobei sicher nicht der Breitband-Anschluss den Flaschenhals darstellt, sondern das Herumsuchen und der Einzel-Download verschiedenen Dateien. Das Resultat ist lediglich ca. 4 MB klein und ist im nachfolgenden Bild dargestellt.

Man wird sporadisch überprüfen wollen, ob die Downloads tatsächlich den vollständigen Text enthalten: Die Anmelde-Cookies haben eine Verfallsdatum, anschließend grast wget das Heise Select-Portal wieder ohne gültige Benutzeranmeldung ab. In diesem Fall muss man sich erneut im Chrome auf der Webseite anmelden und die cookies.txt-Datei erneuern, damit es wieder klappt.

Dateitransfer aufs Handy

Nun transferiert man den Stapel HTML-Dateien an eine geeignet erscheinende Stelle aufs Android-Handy. Jeder mag hier die eigene präferierte Methode verwenden: Per USB-Kabel, per Google Drive Cloud, per Mail an sich selbst mit einer ZIP-Datei des Ordners und anschließendem Herunterladen und Auspacken des Attachments im „Download“-Ordner … oder wie auch immer – jeder Jeck ist anders.

Ich persönlich empfehle hierfür den kostenlosen, werbefreien Total Commander – Dateimanager für Android mitsamt des passenden WiFi/WLAN-Plugin für Totalcmd.

Mit Hilfe dieses Plugins kann man ganze Ordner des Android-Dateisystems im heimischen (W)LAN freigeben und von Finder, Explorer & Co. per WebDAV darauf zugreifen.

Hierzu muss man natürlich die etwas sperrige Freigabe-URL eintippen; alternativ sucht man sich einen QR-Code-Scanner für die Laptop-Webcam (unter macOS etwa das kostenlose „QR Journal“) und ist fein raus.

Anschließend kann man die Dateien einfach per Drag & Drop vom Desktop aufs Handy ziehen. So sieht das Resultat dann (wiederum im Total Commander) am Handy aus:

Text-to-Speech Sprachmodule

Nun zur eigentlichen Vorlesefunktion, auf englisch „Text-to-Speech“ oder kurz „TTS“ genannt. Grundsätzlich beherrschen moderne Android-Handys diese Funktion mit Bordmitteln, entsprechende APIs existieren im Dienste der Barrierefreiheit im Betriebssystem. Maschinelle Vorleser mit verschiedenen Stimmen und unterschiedlich gut gelungener Sprachsynthese, die sich anschließend wahlweise nutzen lassen, gibt es im Google Play-Store herunterzuladen – kostenlos wie kostenpflichtig.

Man findet im Internet verschiedene Vergleichstests darüber, welche Stimme für welchen Zweck besser oder schlechter geeignet ist. Schlussendlich entscheidet aber auch noch der eigene Geschmack. Die mit meinem in Ehre ergrauten Samsung Galaxy S7 mitgelieferte Samsung-Stimme gefällt mir persönlich nicht so sehr, sie klingt arg künstlich.

Aktuell verwende ich stattdessen Googles kostenlos verfügbare Sprachsynthese „Google Sprachausgabe“, die sowohl mit männlicher als auch weiblicher Stimme verschiedenste Sprachen unterstützt, die man sich jeweils in-app dazu laden kann. — Wie gesagt, Geschmäcker sind verschieden.

Vorlesen – there’s an app for that

Das eigentliche Vorlesen von Texten geht natürlich über die reine Handy-Bedienung für Personen mit eingeschränktem Sehvermögen hinaus. Für diesen Zweck muss man mit einer spezialisierten App nachhelfen. Auch derer gibt es mehrere verschiedene im Google Play Store.

Ich persönlich verwende @Voice Aloud Reader, ich habe mir sogar die @Voice Premium Lizenz für aktuell 9,50 EUR gegönnt (mehr dazu weiter unten). @Voice merkt man an, dass er über viele Jahre hinweg entstanden ist und nach und nach immer mehr Features und Einstellmöglichkeiten hinzu gekommen ist. Man kann sich leicht darin verirren, und einiges ist wenig offensichtlich und erfordert anfänglich etwas Herumprobieren.

Man beginnt idealerweise damit, oben links das (schmale) „Burger-Menü“ aufzurufen. Auf der nun erscheinenden, anfangs leeren Seite tippt man unten links auf das „+“, um Dateien hinzuzufügen. Nun kann man sich nun in das gewünschte Verzeichnis durchhangeln, in das man oben die heruntergeladenen .html-Dateien kopiert hatte. — Liegen diese auf der eingelegten SD-Karte, fordert die App typischerweise zur Freigabe von Zugriffsrechten auf.

Dort finden sich alle zum Vorlesen geeigneten Dateien des gewählten Verzeichnisses, und sie lassen sich zum Vorlesen an- oder abwählen – gerne auch alle auf einmal mit dem entsprechenden Symbol oben rechts in der Leiste. Freundlicherweise wird hier „natürlich“ sortiert, d.h. 1…9 kommt vor 10…11…99 kommt vor 100… usw. — Auf „index.html“, das das Inhaltsverzeichnis repräsentiert, kann man getrost verzichten.

Nach „Fertig“ gelangt man zurück auf die zuvor leere Seite, die nun die soeben angewählten Dateien enthält, die man bei Bedarf umsortieren kann. Tippt man nun etwa die oberste an (typischerweise das c’t-Editorial auf „seite-3.html“) und tippt unten rechts auf das „Play“-Symbol, gelangt man zurück zum Hauptbildschirm – und „schon“ geht’s los. Ein Tipp auf den „Pfeil nach oben“ ganz unten rechts klappt das abgebildete Menü aus, auf dem sich die grundlegenden Spracheinstellungen konfigurieren lassen.

  Detailliertere Einstellungen, insbesondere die Wahl der Stimme und entsprechende Feineinstellungen, finden sich im Wust der Programmeinstellungen oben rechts hinter dem Zahnrad-Symbol. Als ungemein wichtig empfinde ich vor allem die erst in der Vollversion freigeschaltete Möglichkeit, Sprachersetzungen zu konfigurieren.

Mitunter wird man nämlich beim Zuhören über Begriffe wie etwa „Liezen-Zart“ stolpern und nach kurzem Nachdenken amüsiert feststellen, dass damit wohl „Lizenz-Art“ gemeint war. Jegliche derartigen Abstrusitäten wird man wohl kaum vorab finden, aber sträflichen Aussprachefehlern wie die meiner Google-Stimme, die dazu neigt, „iOS“ als „Ieh-Oss“ und „macOS“ als „Mah-Koss“ auszusprechen, kann man damit wirksam entgegentreten.

Die merkwürdigen Sonderzeichen vor „iOS“ und „macOS“ rühren übrigens daher, dass diese als „Nur als ganzes Wort“ markiert sind – damit aus „grandios“ nicht etwa also „grand-Ei-Oh-Ess“ ausgesprochen wird.

Wiedergabe und Steuerung per Medientasten am Autoradio

Nachdem man seine persönliche Lieblingsstimme und die optimale Vorlesegeschwindigkeit gefunden hat, gestaltet sich das Vorlesen als überaus angenehm. Richtig nett wird das alles natürlich erst, wenn das Handy per Bluetooth mit dem Autoradio gekoppelt ist und das Playback folglich nicht über den quäkenden Handy-Lautsprecher, sondern über das Auto-Audiosystem erfolgt.

Natürlich wird man zur Navigation im Text nicht das Handy in die Hand nehmen wollen (bzw. auch gar nicht dürfen). Stattdessen unterstützt @Voice zumindest die drei Medientasten Pause, Prev und Next, die das entsprechend ausgestattete Autoradio per Bluetooth ans Handy zurück schickt, und die @Voice entsprechend auswertet.

Dabei gilt: Während des laufenden Playbacks springt ein Druck auf Next/Prev satzweise vor bzw. zurück. Das hilft, wenn man den letzten Satz noch einmal hören möchte, oder wenn man beispielsweise über ein kryptisches Code-Beispiel hinweg skippen möchte, das ungelenk vorgelesen wird.

Der deutlich wichtigere Anwendungsfall ist aber sicher, einen weniger interessanten Artikel abzubrechen und unverzüglich zum nächsten Artikel zu wechseln. Etwas versteckt findet sich in der Anleitung zu @Voice der rettenden Hinweis: Man unterbricht zuerst die Wiedergabe durch Druck auf die Pause-Taste – und drückt erst dann die Next-Taste. Damit springt @Voice tatsächlich in die nächste Datei und damit zum nächsten Artikel.

All das möchte man vielleicht einmal vor Fahrtantritt noch auf dem Parkplatz stehend mit eingeschaltetem Handydisplay ausprobieren, bevor man das Gerät in den Standby schickt und in die Mittelkonsole legt. Man gewöhnt sich aber schnell daran und will es bald nicht mehr missen.

Arbeiten im neuen „Et Bröckske“ – Wahrzeichen im Herzen Krefelds

Köln/Krefeld. Mit Fertigstellung des Rohbaus und der Gebäudehülle vom „Et Bröckske“ erreicht der Kölner Projektentwickler Qvadrat einen weiteren Meilenstein seines im Jahr 2019 begonnenen Vorhabens. Damit gibt das Family Office den Startschuss für die weiteren Ausbauarbeiten der Räumlichkeiten, nachdem 2022 ganz im Zeichen der Abrissarbeiten gestanden hatte und erst diesjährig mit den Rohbauarbeiten begonnen wurde. „Mit dem 'Et Bröckske' verbinden viele Krefelderinnen und Krefelder schöne Erinnerungen. Die Umgestaltung dieses besonderen Ortes ist auch deshalb so gelungen, weil Altes bewahrt wird und Modernes entsteht, weil Nostalgie und Neubeginn Hand in Hand gehen. Ein Wahrzeichen unseres Stadtzentrums bleibt auf diese Weise optisch erhalten, während zugleich spannende neue Nutzungen umgesetzt werden und Frequenz in unsere Innenstadt bringen", betont Oberbürgermeister Frank Meyer. Rund 3.795 Quadratmeter Bruttogeschossfläche warten auf vier Vollgeschossen sowie im Dachgeschoss auf neue Mieter. Die neun Mieteinheiten ab 273 Quadratmeter eignen sich für Anwaltskanzleien und Beratungsgesellschaften ebenso wie für Arzt- und Heilpraxen. Im Erdgeschoss wird der angesagte Systemgastronomieanbieter „Peter Pane“ das neue „Et Bröckske“ mit Leben und Wohlfühlatmosphäre füllen und wieder zu dem machen, was es jahrzehntelang war: ein Ort der Begegnung und des Miteinanders.  Insgesamt sind es 2.759 Quadratmeter, die als moderne Büro- beziehungsweise Praxisflächen flexibel genutzt werden können. Das Dachgeschoss punktet mit einem besonderen Highlight: einer Büro-/Praxiseinheit über zwei Ebenen inklusive zwei großer Dachterrassen. Der Neubau ermöglicht insgesamt flexible Bürostrukturen: So sind hier attraktive Arbeitsplätze beispielsweise auch in Open Spaces oder Zellenbüros denkbar. Alle Räumlichkeiten sind klimatisiert. „Bei deren Ausbau können wir die Anforderungen und Wünsche der Mieter umsetzen“, so Arne Grundmann, Leiter Projektentwicklung der Qvadrat GmbH. Das barrierefreie „Et Bröckske“ erreicht als Denkmal den Nachhaltigkeitswert „Effizienzhaus 70“. Die sanierten historischen Holzsprossenfenster erzeugen dabei ein besonderes Flair und ermöglichen „einen wunderschönen Ausblick in das Grün des Kirch- und Willy-Göldenbach-Platzes“, schwärmt Grundmann und bringt´s auf den Punkt: „Das gibt´s nicht im Home-Office, sondern nur in der Innenstadt.“ Das „Et Bröckske“ ist seit jeher optimal an das öffentliche Personennahverkehrsnetz angebunden und selbst vom Krefelder Hauptbahnhof fußläufig erreichbar. Wer auf den eigenen PKW „setzt“, findet im 150 Meter entfernten Parkhaus ausreichend Stellplätze, die auch für künftige Nutzer „gesichert“ sind. Ab Anfang 2024 sollen die ersten Mieter ins neue „Et Bröckske“ einziehen. This discourse always gets super heated, and even a bit hostile, and so it’s tough to discuss from all sides. There is a lot of passion surrounding this, and that’s part of what I love about our fandom, but I also want to see things stay safe for everyone involved on every angle of the discourse. In an instance like this one, I believe it’s fair for reader interpretation to come into play, particularly because the canon and the Word of God input can and does support multiple interpretations.

In the Hale interview, he frequently uses the word “Queer” for Eliot, while also describing him as a homosexual. He elaborates to mention that Eliot can be a bit fluid and that while he clearly is not “bisexual in a 50/50 split kind of way” that doesn’t stop him from occasionally being able to experience or pursue sexual connections with whomever he may want to. He even talks a bit about their implication of the dynamic between him and Janet/Margo and how that may be a bit of a clue to some of his fluidity.

Beyond Word of God supplements, in my first watch through of the series, Eliot read to me as being homoflexible. His preference and desire for men is clear and explicit. However, it certainly felt like there was an implication of there being a sexual dynamic between him and Margo( some of my favorite Word of God from Hale is him saying “it’s not -not- romantic, and it’s not -not- sexual hahaha) , and I appreciated a line where talks about a hedgewitch blowing him for a spell and he didn’t explicitly state a gender for that person. Could it have been a guy? For sure! Could it have been a woman or enby? Maybe.

Besides that, I really appreciate the Thai Food line. To me, it framed both him and Margo as being somehow non-monosexual and yet experiencing wildly different orientations. Margo is clearly a much more traditional Bi/Pansexual, whereas Eliot is Homoflexible at best (which to me, is still non-monosexual). He finds pussy interesting, and sometimes, he even likes it. (All while implying that Margo typically or always likes pussy) It’s not typical or frequent for Eliot, but it certainly didn’t sound like repulsion or wholly impossible either. Clearly he is 0% attracted to or interested in maintaining a romantic relationship with Fen, but I always thought that moment shed some light on his broader experience of sexuality. Do I think Eliot would necessarily self identify as Pan? Probably not. I think he would be more likely to claim Gay or Queer (my personal favorite for him), but I also think he is aware and open about the fact that his orientation isn’t as strict and simple as it could be.

Clearly, Eliot isn’t straight, and I think any non-straight orientation is a valid one for him. As a nonmonosexual person who has a strong, intense preference for one gender over others (while still acknowledging my occasional attraction outside of that typical pattern) it is important to me to see that kind of experience represented. The heteroflexible and homoflexible experiences are fully valid. A lot of people differ on what to call them or on how Bi or not bi they are, and I think we should be talking about them and open up to seeing the validity of them, regardless of how we label them. Some people in those orientations prefer gay or straight, others prefer Bi/Pan. Some simply Queer. That is why I try to speak up on my thoughts on the subject of Eliot from time to time.

Ultimately, I think we can interpret Eliot in a few ways as long as we are acknowledging his clear preference for male partners.
