I know the civil war/family strive stuff is super serious, but I can't help but cackle when I imagine it. Like, (1) the coup being Apollo's idea but Poseidon getting stuck with doing most of it reminds me 100% of group projects and it's so funny. (2) The hilarity of Nico and Hazel trying to excape from the Underworld only for Hades to catch them gives me Charlie Chaplin vibes. (3) On a more serious note, what's going on with New Rome and Frank btw? Isn't the civil war a Greek issue?
please cackle a lot of this fic is comedic that’s the fun part. its actually so hard to talk abt apollo’s role in this because it ruins a big portion of the story but i can say it traces back to trials of apollo. poseidon does get stuck with a lot of the responsibility like he’s rolling his eyes and cursing apollo half the time.
umm when it was piecing itself together in my mind, i didn’t want to leave new rome alone cause that’s a whole city of demigods. in regards to canon, the greek-roman gods thing is still a mess, and i assume if annabeth & percy are attending college there, if jason just chooses to be greek, riordan has made the separation issue a moot point. to me new rome and cj feel like a symbol of more steadfast loyalty to the gods and so in pjoiv, that’s what they are. poseidon takes chb, but zeus gets to cj first.
i was also pondering the futures of all the demigods. i think hazel would actually fall out of the praetor role due to her nature, but frank we could have some fun with. what if instead of abandoning cj and new rome, frank settles into praetorship, becomes more steadfastly loyal, becomes that type of violent, conservative roman that we saw towards the end of hoo. that you see in the usual ancient roman media. what if that’s the reason him and hazel break up. what if you were to put a frank like that up against an enraged percy, who struggles with loyalty to his loved ones. the potential…….they’re going to beat the shit out of each other 🫶

just had the most insane pjoiv thought what if percy gets into a fight with zeus and amidst the heat of the battle he shouts
‘I KILLED YOUR FATHER! I CAN KILL YOU TOO!’

Frank no don’t get too indoctrinated into roman principles and mindset through your praetorship during the unstable years of your early 20s to become a cj & new rome figurehead with the personality of a well-kept guard dog no frank you’re too iconic Frank no noooooooooooo

i'm super curious regarding your sympathy with zeus and if you're up for it, i would love to hear more about it (i promise i'm not skeptical, i also sympathise with him a ton)
specifically discussing this within the context of pjo, i would say i sympathize in the same way that i sympathize with the other olympians. it’s hard to be a being of such power and magnitude and still have your hands tied by these universal rules and limitations. it creates a torturous pattern that is rarely broken and has heartbreak built into it. yes the olympians are egotistical and often seek praise and devotion moreso than anything else, but it still sucks to know because of the nature of things, your kids probably don’t like you and you leave your lovers alone and the fate of the one’s you care for is out of your hands even if u know it.
i humanize the gods quite a bit, especially kronos’ children. zeus in greek myth is a god of justice, worshiped in the home, and known to be fair. he’s the king of the gods, he has to be, you know? in pjo, i feel like we are given this zeus at the start, and that’s shown pretty clearly by his benevolence to thalia (turning her into a tree). as the chronicles progress, a distant grows between him and half-bloods. i mean, the difference between the zeus & jason relationship in tlh and ton is staggering. and his disinterest with apollo in toa really reinforces the idea that this zeus is kind of an asshole.
but i still sympathize with him. i feel for him. i want him to recognize the error of his ways— because zeus is essentially following in his father’s footsteps. he has become a tyrant, he is abusing his power, his children dislike him. he is heading for patricide, as his father and his grandfather before him. and you know, off-book, i think he knows that and is fearful of that.
if we think of zeus as a boy and not a king, having your father (that you killed) come back after centuries, probably digs up that entire traumatic past, probably forces him to view luke’s fire and drive as more than a demigod’s grudge. he’s watching his own empire beginning to crack. and, im not sure if riordan meant this, but that gives his sudden distance meaning. zeus is getting paranoid, has no support, is at odds with his wife. his own fate is starting to swallow him whole (and i mean, that was his original fate, had rhea not interfered).

i have to explain the battle at athens even though i don’t want to spoil it bc my writing track record is terrible but it’s such a ridiculously good sequence like okay so we’re in pjoiv part ii right and they’re not doing that great they’re losing more temples than they’re gaining and their plans keep crumbling and in regards to athens no one even CONSIDERS it because no one not even poseidon is willing to meet athena in battle in her city it’s essentially a fool’s errand. but we have this scene where annabeth walks into the middle of a battle meeting, her arms full of papers, and looks at poseidon with a straight face and TELLS—not suggests she TELLS this god who has immortal beef with her mother over this exact city that he already lost once—him that ‘you are going to take athens and you’re going to lose it’ and then BAM we cut to the battle at athens. ok. and they are already lined up waiting to fight and athena literally flashes herself and her entire army and a few other gods onto the battlefield this goddess is in full regalia in her chariot just RADIATING anger cause she cannot believe that they are even attempting this and annabeth is there along the front line and i believe i have one of the campers give a throwaway line of ‘im gonna piss myself’ or something cause athena just looks that scary BUT THAT LINE IS IMPORTANT because the reader gets to realize a good chunk of familiar faces are not there right now. ok and so the battle begins its RIDICULOUSLY hard but it is evenly matched and they’re fighting and fighting and athena and poseidon get a moment but what ends up happening is that athena and annabeth end up battling each other and it’s CLEAR they’re not going to win it’s obvious but at the last moment the very last moment annabeth delivers a hard blow of a line to her mother and poseidon RETREATS he takes his entire army and FLEES and the reader learns from Percy’s narration that was the plan all along because while they distracted athena they were also taking THE OTHER TEMPLES OF ATHENS including one of ZEUS’ TEMPLES !!!!!!!! athena secures her acropolis but loses everything else in the city and it was ANNABETH’S plan and she did it by playing on athena’s ego & pride!! ANNABETH BEATS HER MOTHER WITH HER OWN FATAL FLAW !!!!!!!
