there was a time a few years ago when I had a lot of compassion for pope benedict as one of the catholic church’s most deeply complicated villains (in contrast to, for example, PJII, who was just an asshole imo). realizing today that those feelings aren’t here anymore. I do hope he rests in peace but I don’t think his reputation will ever be salvaged and that’s a good thing.
