I went to Catholic school from kindergarten to grade seven, then grades nine to twelve. Elementary school was fucked up, but I struggle now to remember anything particularly Catholic (rather than just abusively Christian) we were taught, other than in preparing us for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Communion, and Confirmation (I know, right?). In high school, I did lots of reading on my own, and recall radicalizing basically by myself. Shortly after graduation, a classmate died after a protracted fight with brain cancer; the high energy of her huge funeral service drove me further into, I don’t know what to call it, PJII Catholicism*. 

Certainly at home, my parents were extremely devout but doctrinally a bit lazy: my mother because she didn’t have the training, and my father because, despite his conversion and Catholic baptism, he was and remains a Baptist in many ways. The Ten Commandments were a touchstone in our home; I don’t recall seeing the Catechism of the Catholic Church until shortly before my Confirmation. In some ways I got the worst of both worlds, but whether my sister approves of it or not, it is all quite funny to me now that I don’t live with it. During my one year in public school, I attended catechism classes at our church. The look on my teacher’s face when I spoke of the rapture as a given, and on my father’s that night when I told him it wasn’t actually going to happen, still tickle me after all this time.

When I’m an old woman, my father belting “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, “Go Tell It On the Mountain” and his favourite, “Away in a Manger” (yes, all year round) will hopefully stand out in my mind strongly enough to make the crazy shit meaningless. 

*”Trad” Catholicism is associated with a distrust, only sometimes an open repudiation, of all the popes from Vatican II onwards; as well as an insistence on the Latin rite of the mass. IN MY EXPERIENCE, the most far-right or fascist-adjacent Catholics at least where I live are found in this sub-sub-culture. The obnoxious dogmatic conservatism espoused by LifeTeen, Jason Evert and his ilk is politically similar in many ways, but obsessed with the authority of “the magisterium” in a way that is more consistent -- ie, they don’t go around denouncing the fucking pope.
