I genuinely don't understand those who are able to plan out the whole drawing design from the beginning. Like, you just have a whole concept come to you while sketching? How does that work? Every single time I start working on a drawing, the largest amount of edits happen during the linework portion. It's like I can't see where to take things next until I see it closer to a completed stage, and then I have to rework so much.

#maybe I'll share the stages my current drawing has gone through because it's genuinely stupid how many changes it has gone through so far #it started out with the idea of mind of doing a portrait of sokka like i did of katara #and then #while doing the linework #pivoted to falling back on the heavy design elements of art nouveau #which meant adding a frame #and then I started putting in typical flora and added a wolf #but in adding the circular elements of art nouveau i suddenly needed to put something in them #and woe is me i made the circle too large to do a simple design but too small to put in anything thematic #so i needed to change the size of the circle #and then i needed to raise up the top part of the frame to better fit the larger circle #which mean editing the flora in the background because they were meant to occupy a specific shape that had suddenly changed #and then i realized i never made a bottom portion to the frame which meant figuring that out #and creating other shapes that could be filled in with more sokka related stuff #and all of this has happened while doing the linework #what is wrong with me. why can't i just figure this all out while sketching
