Body Pain
Every grappler or competitive athlete knows that with constant training comes the occasional injury and body pain. I’m not exempted from that, and am feeling the results of my six day a week training schedule plus working a regular 40 hour a week job on top of that. Compared to some of my teammates I have it lucky since I have desk job and all and they work more physical jobs like roofing, landscaping and such, but we all suffer from the end of the day fatigue.
This week in particular has been incredibly hard energy-wise for me; so I thought of compiling the Top FIVE ways a Grappler combats Pain after asking several teammates and consulting my friends on facebook.
1. TAPE IT UP
Seems as though any time you tell someone about ANY injury in jiu-jitsu their first answer is “you should tape it up”. Silly as it sounds but the athletic tape roll has become a precious commodity in the gym and I personally go through about 3 rolls a month.
It’s a great QUICK fix for small injuries like pulled fingers, and a tweaked ankle but should never be the only pain treatment, especially if its a reoccurring injury.
2. ROLL IT OUT
Ahhh the foam roller, painfully rolling out all of kinks before and after a hard training session. Knots and stuck nerves have met their match with constant active release therapy with the foam roller or lacrosse balls.
we can be seen as a tad masochistic to treat pain by applying more pain, but with the correct release techniques you’d be amazed how fast the rest of your body feels better.
3. GET ADJUSTED
We are lucky enough to have a teammate who is our honorary team chiropractor and also a team occupational therapist. Having people who specialized in realigning your spine structure will help on-going pain and also help you get stronger after injuring yourself.
4. R.I.C.E
Well that the go-to: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Bad sprains, tweaked joints and hurt necks.. when you ask anyone what to do.. this is what they will say.
I know.. roll your eyes at this suggestion but it is, what it is. No one ever wants to hear to take time off rolling, but sometimes that’s what your body needs. Let it heal so you can come back stronger.
5. RUB DOWN
A good sports massage is key. I’ve been told with how intense training is you should be getting one twice a month. I think that gets pricey, so I’m bad and get it once every few months, but my body feels the abuse if I go on for too long without it.
Get someone who specializes in sports massages not one of those soft luxurious massages.. someone who will rub the knots out.. again pain on pain but for me at least that’s the only way I feel better.
Oh! and drink A LOT of water after.. Lactic Acid build-up is NO BUENO..
So yes, pain is inevitable especially if you are training competitively. It is still considered a combat sport. Remember to take care of your body, and listen to the pain and fatigue triggers. You are only going to prolong injury and stress on your body if you keep pushing, but only you know where that line is drawn.
Something I do is I also add yoga and extended stretching in my exercise routine. It’s something that prevents injury and keeps my body in active rest. I find it helpful.
