Luffy

Owned: No, library Page count: 340 My summary: A history of the Golden Age of Piracy - Caribbean buccaneers fighting and robbing from the colonies in the New World, holding up port towns and butchering hundreds. Names like Charles Vane, Calico Jack, Anne Bonny, Benjamin Hornigold - all rose to prominence on Nassau or Port Royal, and all fell back into the misty haze of pirate legend. This is their story. My rating: 4/5

More books about pirates! This is going to become a running theme, if it isn't already. I'm doing research for a book I want to write, so I'm reading a lot of pirate nonfiction in the vain hope that at least some of it will stick in me brain long enough to create a plausible historical fiction from it. This book is specifically about Caribbean pirates during the Age of Sail, and more specifically the few years that historians have dubbed the Golden Age of Piracy. From Benjamin Hornigold to William Fly, pirates reigned over the Caribbean and caused terror in her oceans, but the life did not last long, and the authorities seized control back from them. This is the story of how that happened - how pirates rose, and how they fell.

It's a pretty good book - informative without being overly dense or formal, accessible, interesting - though I did have some quibbles here and there. The more narrative-style retelling of these pirates' stories led to some jumping around in the timeline that could be confusing, and as such the stories didn't quite flow as well as they could. Konstam speaks of accepted historical theory and posits his own suppositions, but some of them seem weak. (I don't think, for example, that it's widely accepted that Daniel Defoe is 'Captain Charles Johnson', the author of 1724 book A General History of the Pyrates, just that it's a possible theory.) Nevertheless, his structure of taking us through the story of each individual pirate is an interesting one, and curtails the potential problem of the story stopping and starting as it skips between captains. If you're into pirates, this isn't a bad book to check out, that's all I'm saying.

Tricia Levenseller just doesn’t miss when it comes to pirate adventure novels! 

Following the events of the “Daughter of the Pirate King” duology, “Vengeance of the Pirate Queen” centers around Sorinda Veshtas, the pirate queen’s assassin. As a newly appointed captain, Sorinda is dispatched on a rescue mission. Unfortunately, her sailing master just so happens to be Kearan Erroth, the one person attuned to her every movement in the shadows. Sadly, it’s near impossible to avoid him on a ship with few hiding places. But when the crew faces the King of the Undersea, a being who can control the dead, Sorinda’s helmsman might be the only one that can save her from becoming an undead queen. 

I. Love. Sorinda. Veshtas. I always have ever since reading “Daughter of the Pirate Queen.” Now I love her even more. Levenseller never fails to create strong female characters and Sorinda might just be the fiercest one of all. Her past is revealed in bits and pieces. Once I saw the whole picture I was devastated. Her vengeance for what happened to her family is a driving force in her life and motivated her to become a weapon. At the same time, she is consumed by guilt. 

Kearan is the one who helps her realize that she is worthy of life, love, and saving and that it is okay to lean on others. Their romance truly left me a sopping mess. I enjoyed watching Sorinda try to avoid him as much as possible until she could no longer ignore her budding feelings. Watching their squabbles turn into playful banter. Their reluctant love story is a beautiful one as they learn to confide in each other and accept their own flaws. 

As a huge fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, I enjoyed how this book pays homage to The Curse of the Black Pearl. I was on the edge of my seat, soaring through each chapter wondering how Sorinda and her crew would defeat an army of the undead. The explosive ending does not disappoint. This swashbuckling adventure fulfilled all of my pirate loving dreams!

I was too busy, uh, watching more Black Sails yesterday (😆) to really notice how huge the pirate poll blew up until the drama was all over my dash, but damn

Anyway... wait, pause to acknowledge a few disclaimers like a) Black Sails and OFMD are entirely different shows for different audiences with different messages, so the individual words "gay", "pirate", and "show" hit almost every similarity they have (and they both do what they are trying to do! - it's just a poor comparison to each other), b) even a little harassment goes a long way for OP so maybe Tumblr should do less blatantly mocking them, if only because there are thousands of us and they are kinda outnumbered, and c) voting Flint in a silly pirate poll is not bravely taking OFMD to task for problematic aspects no matter how you spin it. Ok, now... Anyway, I do think this whole thing is another great case study in how petty fandom drama can look so much bigger than it actually is.

Like, for all the current narrative is this huge wave of Black Sails fans jeering and joking in the tags in support of curbstomping Stede, real numbers paint a different picture. When I checked the poll this morning, a few hours after it closed, it had around 2300 reblogs. A lot, to be clear. Plenty to look overwhelming to the poll runner in their notifs. But compare that to the total votes:

2300 vs 21,500??? Stede lost with something near 4 times as many votes as the total number of reblogs. The vote difference was nearly twice the reblog count. Even if every reblog came with commentary (not true) and all commentary was Flint fans maliciously dunking on OFMD (not remotely true), that hypothetical "toxic" element still would never have been anything near the majority. And this makes perfect sense!

It's a random cross-fandom tumblr bracket! You look at two pictures and pick either your blorbo, your fandom, the best vibes, or the guy you don't have filtered for being annoying. Hell, just positioning it at all as OFMD fandom vs Black Sails fans / OFMD haters isn't accurate, because I'm a decently skewed OFMD blog and literally everyone I saw in my section of this (massively divided) fandom was voting Flint 🤣. He wasn't an underdog in any respect.

I'm sure there was enough notably aggressive hate to upset OP since they are the one who would be getting all the notifs and even anons (who I'm sure we all expect to come in with calm and well reasoned observations 🙃), but I'm not actually sympathetic enough to pretend they didn't react terribly and contribute to blowing it out of proportion.

Flint didn't win due to a harassment campaign or even a massive resurgence of dedicated fans, guys, and Stede didn't get unfairly curbstomped into oblivion. Tumblr just widely voted on their fave pirate the way tumblr does 🤷‍♀️
