MIRACLE LP REISSUE After a few polychrome tracks navigating between indus and ambient-house released on different labels, the first album "Miracle" goes further and installs the universe of the Dupont family. A world where the cold techno-pop memories of "Fade To Grey" and other more industrial ones are gently telescoped together. A record that also integrates ambient data, that loves jazz and even turns out to be groovy with " Jean-Michel ". Miracle sparkles like a kaleidoscope where the major trends of the first electro decade are accurately reflected. Wednesday Review: You Blew It! - Pioneer of Nothing EP (1/27/15)
Jade Treet Bandcamp
You Blew It! Facebook
To start this section of the blog off, I wanted to talk about the latest release from Florida emo punks, You Blew It! These guys have been a favorite of mine since early 2010 and it's really been incredible to see them grow. These guys are on the front of the entire "emo revival" and have only re-solidified that standing with this three song (ugh why) EP. This is the follow up to another EP last year comprised entirely of Weezer covers. While that was great, this is really on another level. I know I'm a week late on this one but it was too good to not talk about.
The band has somewhat abandoned their lo-fi roots for a much more developed and complex sound. While I don't know if any of the albums three songs are at the anthem level just yet, they could be well on the way. The vocals are still generally buried in the tracks underneath an incredible wall of guitars and drums. After listening to it a few times, which is exactly what I've done, you start to notice the little nuances that guitarists Andy Anaya and Trevor O'Hare and guitarist/vocalist Tanner Jones have incorporated. After seeing these guys live a few times, it's really great to see that same chemistry that fills their shows coming into the studio. Now for the track listing:
1. Lanai (03:53): The EP starts off strong. We get that great clean guitar tone that we have come to expect from the YBI! camp. After a couple seconds, the rest of the band comes crashing in only to back off again. The build is real. This leads nicely into some guitar harmonies (guitarmonies?) that first made these twinkle daddies famous. Once the vocals come in, we hear something new from Jones. He sounds a bit crisper, not anything like that rasp we are used to hearing. It is probably due to the higher production value but we get treated to the usual brand of lyrics. The words cut through decently but I will admit I had to look at the insert of my vinyl to get all the lyrics right. The song features some great vocal harmonies, different from ones we've heard yet from this outfit. This track I think really shows how the group is willing to move forward with their sound without abandoning what they've already made. There's some great guitar work as we've come to expect but the rest of the band gets featured as well. I think this is going to be a great one to open a live set.
2. Bedside Manor (02:52): Keeping the energy up, the group launches right into what is arguably my favorite song the band has put out to date. I can't talk about this one enough. The song starts off with the a similar note to the starting note of TWIABPAIANLATD's track "Picture Of A Tree That Doesn't Look Ok" (my favorite off that album, btw). We get a nice solo guitar with a very warm tone hitting that consistent low note to start things off before the drums fill with a great slow tempo. The song keeps the tempo moving nicely with one of the best sing/scream along choruses yet. I think that's the biggest selling point of this song. It's a real blast to sing along. I just can't help myself but smile when listening to this one. The EP gets it's title from this tune and I think that it fits perfectly. I think this shows a different side of the band that hasn't really been looked into yet. It's got the usual sad undertones that is almost expected at this point, but it does a lot more than just that. They do some great stuff with the layered guitars and vocal harmonies that I think just encapsulates everything about this scene that I love so much. My only problem is that the song is a little short. Go listen to this song now if you aren't already. Seriously. Go do it. I can wait.
3. Your Side (02:56): Slowing things down a bit with this last track, YBI! shows their softer side (if you can believe it). This song really features just Jones and guitar with some slow building drums and other instrumentation as it progresses. I like that the group brings things down and it really helps tie the album together. I think that it would make a bit more sense if there were, say, two more songs before it, but I can't really count that one against them. I like when bands do this kind of thing especially since it shows a softer side to an already pretty soft band. I think it shows that these guys can bring down the noise without going acoustic. It reminds me a bit of their track off of "Grow Up, Dude" titled "The Fifties." I love that they bring things down with that. I can see this one replaced that in their live set as well.
Final Thoughts: So this is a quick one. The EP is short and that's honestly my only gripe with it. I think this release shows some serious growth and it only makes me excited to see what will come next. I'm personally hoping for a full length release by the end of 2015. I haven't decided if I am going to rate albums so I'll just give it one of the two options: buy or don't buy.
Buy. For sure buy. Be sure to pick up one of the vinyl that is for sale on the Jade Tree store or pick one of them up at one of You Blew It!'s tour dates (with Tiny Moving Parts and Rozwell Kid).
Onward,
Pioneer

Monday Listen: Lobby Boxer - Lobby Boxer (bandcamp)
To start things off, I figured I'd post something that's been on hot rotation pretty much since I found it a while back. The sophomore release from the St. Louis trio reminds me of an amalgamation of a few different acts. They have the driving guitar lines of Everyone Everywhere or Algernon Cadwallader mixed with the technicallity of the Fall of Troy, but the vocals more like a post hardcore act like The Receiving End of Sirens. I keep finding myself going back to this one even though it came out nearly 9 months ago. Don't judge the whole EP by the first track, though. It grows and changes with each song moving in different directions all while keeping the listener's attention. There's some incredible shifts of intensity that show the versatility of the band, like in the second half of The Truman Show. I'm a huge fan of the chaotic intro to Headrush especially when it is followed with the soothing harmonies of Vocalist Zach Fendelman. I'm sure you'll love this EP just as much as I do. If you like what you hear, I of course recommend supporting the band with a purchase or seeing them live. They don't tour much but have an upcoming show this February.
My recommendation: start at the top and listen all the way down. All five tracks are excellent. I can only hope more bands follow suit and head away from the lo-fi route like these guys.
