❝no, that--it's not what I meant at all.❞ it seemed like they were actually doing this, actually having the conversation that Betty had simultaneously desired but also dreaded since she had learned of Eli's existence. it hadn't taken long for the blonde to approach her mother about it, that conversation ending in hoarse voices from all of the yelling & tears from both sides that seemed to change the very foundation of their relationship.

the topic of which had come up with her twin sister a few weeks later, almost accidentally. Eli had mentioned Alice & the words had just kind of...slipped out. Betty never did have the luxury of a filter around the people she considered most important. & it wasn't like she was trying to defend her mother, not at all, but Alice had said that if there had been a way to go back & do things differently, raise the girls together, that she would have taken it in a heartbeat. in the moment it had seemed crucial to convey that point to Eli. but she, of course, hadn't thought about how it might have sounded. like their mother only regretted it because of the way things had turned out, not that she truly wanted to make things right.
