“No one knows about anything until the day after tomorrow and by then we may be gone. But I will more than likely still be pasting and gluing bling in my grave and having new impossible “ideas”. “ - James Bidgood - RIP to one of my favorite photographers James Bidgood 💖 March 28, 1933 - January 31, 2022 #JamesBidgood 💘 #PinkNarcissus 💝 #BobbyKendall 💕 https://www.instagram.com/p/CZbTPMTuacS/?utm_medium=tumblr

I promise I won’t just post about my fundraiser every day. But thanks so much for all the support so far. It’s unbelievable how wonderful everyone has been, and I’ve only received tiny little bouts of transphobia, which is better than I was expecting tbh! If you wanted to share or donate, the link is in my bio :) living that chapped lip life for the last 10 years. Anyways, I did my makeup for the first time since the last time I put a photo on Instagram. Aye that’s how rare it is lol. Excuse my fucking mess of a bedroom. Yes mum, nothing has changed in the last 10 years since I moved out lol. #facetattoos #scleratattoo #scleraltattoo #eyeballtattoo #motd #transdjenter #nonbinary #throattattoo #lostcherry #youtuber #btu #melancholia #silverdune #pinknarcissus #willowgrey #djent #emotrap #emo #gothgirl #emogirl #girlswithshorthair #alternative https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ6ZGPel5uf/?igshid=1b44tv2zxlbh7

PINK NARCISSUS – ‘PIG MIRACLE DAY’
Pink Narcissus formed in 2009 without a preconceived style or genre, subsequently they have developed a sound that is uniquely theirs which places them firmly in the list of bands that I want to hear. All members bring their own, contrasting influences to the mix, be it from poetry, confessional lyrics (echoing the French chanson tradition), punk, funk, metal, klezmer and The Muppet Show to name but a few; the band’s original guitarist Paddy Longlegs dubbed their style as “Freak Rock”.
Four years into the band’s development singer Oliva Spleen had a dream in which his friend Sam Culpeck was asking him if it was “Pig Miracle Day” that day. On waking, an account of this dream was posted on Facebook and it was duly decided that the band's next release would have to be called “Pig Miracle Day”. Tragically, Sam passed away in 2015. Pig Miracle Day exists in loving memory of her.
The album’s cover is of a pig, praying to a radiant aubergine. Spleen hallucinated this vision on LSD when he was seventeen and captured it in oil paints shortly after. His long-time friend and mentor, (the internationally renowned) poet and author Salena Godden, lent her voice and words to the album’s intro.
So much for the background, but before I turn my attention to this latest release by Pink Narcissus I'd like to take a little step back in time to help set the scene. Shortly after I retired I was recruited to Generate Radio, a community radio station that had been established by a couple of my ex-students. Shortly after this I quickly developed a lot of contacts in Brighton, including what became to be a station favourite in the form of Pink Narcissus, particularly with the powerful 'Disinfectant'!
And shortly after that, video producer Trushna Patel joined my list of contacts and she was to include the band in her portfolio with a video for 'Masquerade'. Then at the end of May 2013 I posted a review of the band's album 'Blood On The Page'
But so much for the brief history lesson, whilst my reviews have routinely referenced my life, I have always intended that they be firmly focussed on the music; and so to the latest offering by the band Pink Narcissus, 'Pig Miracle Day'.
Despite the tendency of digital releases to lead listeners to dip in and sample tracks at random, some artists remain committed to a linear structure with regard to the sequencing of the tracks presented as an 'album', and so as with many great things, 'Pig Miracle Day' gets started with an 'Intro' voiced by Ted Hughes nominated poet and author Salena Godden. She enthuses enigmatically about her vpreparations for the eponymous 'day' and just when her utterances become particularly interesting a background cacophony of ambient noise masks her, but my interest has most certainly been grabbed, and so we progress to the next track 'Home (Piano Wire)'; an injection of 'raw power' gets the track started which has me recalling the joys of experiencing Iggy & The Stooges back in 1973, but the sound soon develops when singer Oliva gets started and reminds me of what had drawn me to the Pink Narcissus tracks that I mentioned earlier. Certainly the exciting energy is there along with true raw power and emotion, but this is most definitely no would-be Stooges tribute band, in fact I firmly believe that any similarities are incidental rather than intentional, as outlined previously Pink Narcissus are very much a band with their very own style – one of the problems of having been an avid listener of great music over decades is that I can't help recalling previous inspirational performances.
'No Relief' follows to assault the aural senses with a relentless blend of insistent guitar riffs ably supported by a powerfully driving bass and drum team.
The intro for 'Failings' has me reminiscing again, recalling John Peel's wonderful 'Festive Fifties' before he had to restrict votes to tracks from the preceding year only. Prior to this Joy Division tracks tended to dominate. Yet again the intro that had sensing echoes from the past soon evolves into something unique – some of the music from previous years remains great to hear on occasion but I'm a sucker for exploring a wide range of new output and feel so privileged to be able to experience gems such as this album.
In addition to appreciating tight and exciting musicianship with an edge I am very much drawn to considered and challenging lyrics, the opening lines to 'Baron Wolf' certainly don't disappoint me.
“So when they’ve trampled your dreams And when they’ve crushed all desire That’s when you may as well quit That’s when it’s time to retire.”
Well so far, a great summation of my last years working in Scottish education, however, my life post retiral doesn't match with verse two. “There’s nothing left to achieve Nothing to which you aspire But still my heart somehow bleeds Still I’m consumed by this fire .”
Once I had 'escaped from my previous career I found much to aspire to and believe that to date I have achieved much, principally due to my love of music and desire to help support up-coming musicians who refuse to compromise their principles and adapt to commercial pressures. Pink Narcissus is one such band and I am very happy to help spread the word about them.
The penultimate track 'Time' is a driving anthemic number that seems to accelerate me to an all too soon album climax – indeed, “Time won’t wait It slips away / Don’t hesitate / Seize the day.”
In my youth one of the joys of listening to music was the ability to examine the album sleeve and liner artwork, particularly when this enabled me to following the printed lyrics. Although vinyl is enjoying a bit of a resurgence, so much music nowadays arrives electronically in my inbox, but like many others Pink Narcissus have taken the time to make their lyrics available on-line and they can be viewed on their Bandcamp page.
'Pig Miracle Day' concludes with 'Come Crawling' which completes the varied range of music and moods, all expertly delivered by Oli Spleen (Vocals), Lilith Ghost – (Guitarist), Cod Riverson (Bass) and Cookie Allen (Drums). IMHO a band well worth checking out, certainly by downloading the album, but also keep an eye out for a live performance – sadly I haven't been able to see them in person but live video footage suggests that such a live experience would be something to relish! If yiou're in or near Brighton on Sunday 7th January you can catch them at 'The Prince Albert', otherwise here are a couple of live videos! 'Home' / 'Baron Wolf'
