I wish with all my soul that this creature was not $300, or we would have brought home a perfect little friend today.

'Assembly' ; Art of Noticing Workshop
A collection of photos taken myself of the partially skeletal remains of a small bird killed by my sister’s cat, a taxidermied pine marten from the interior of Leap Castle in Offaly, a seagull in the botanic gardens in Dublin adjacent to Glasnevin Cemetery, and a pelican and heron from Fota Park, Cork.
I want to push these images and study from secondary sources in order to create possibly a short zine, exploratory sketches and some instances of embroidery or cross-stitch on the theme of nature, and the predatory elements of it with which we often refuse to engage with for the ‘brutality’ we see in predator-prey dynamics, a perception within itself presumably only exists as an evolutionary way of ensuring our species survived via altruism and trying to keep others from being killed by predators in the early days of Homo sapiens, and the rot and decay that comes after the kill; the disassembly that comes at the end of the assemblage of the food chain, and how energy travels down it.
These are some initial sketches of this concept, featuring shrew studies, both of their physical image and skeletal structure. The pen pieces are tests for possible embroidery stencils for myself.
I also want to avoid using felines, though they are generating some of my primary sources, during the course of this particular project as I have drawn them for over five entire years for the entirety of my Leaving Cert art career, and am thus thoroughly sick of drawing them, and do not feel as if I am breaching any kind of new ground by including them.
Some belt sketch studies, with photos, from the Art of Noticing workshop, and a paired exercise within which we were tasked with using the provided sheet of circles to create images, using those circles as a base. The penned images are mine, to the right.
Some unshared and discarded sketches from my initial project idea, of the character creation process.

Well I made the entire room smell 🤢 then again I did wait until my boyfriend went to work and his mom is sleeping (it’s 12:30 at night) to dump it in the toilet. I can tell this isn’t going to be fun since I can’t dump it outside 😂😂
They’re nearly done, minimal flesh left over and I am a bit sad that these two also don’t have any turnbinates but you can see a noticeable size difference between these two. I’ll have to do more research on o.tter skulls because I could be wrong about sexing the bigger of them.
I’ve also got a lot of stuff degreasing in small jars. I decided to clean quite a few of mine and they’re looking pretty decent so far. Once this batch is done and my o.tters are done macerating then my maceration tub will become my degrease tub so I can use the heater and clean my bigger skulls like my c.oyote Cain and my b.ear.

I went poking through antique/junk shops for my birthday a couple of weeks ago with vague plans to grab one of the taxidermy foxes I keep seeing everywhere, but I found Pantalaimon instead 😍 He's living in my laundry room (safe from my cat who gets very jealous about other cute furry friends stealing my attention) until I get time to rearrange my kitchen dresser/bookcase into a HDM shrine for my books and all my knitted daemons, then he's going on the wall next to it.
#taxidermy#pine marten#does this need a tw?#dead animal tw#he is SO CUTE#i'm a bit obsessed with taxidermy#i've got a few pieces and done one of my own#but i've never seen one this lovely

He's Finished!!
For anyone who's been following this blog for a hot second knows the journey I've been on with this soft mount pine marten. A lot of ups and downs with problem-solving and trouble shooting. But he's finally done!! He's fully pose able with even a wire in his tail.
I would like to give a huge thanks to @beardless-bearded-vulture who really helped me out through out this project.

This pine marten wasn't mounted by me, I was asked to add the mouse in its mouth. The pine marten has a radio collar because was originally being tracked by DEC and when it was found dead they had it mounted. The mouse was trapped by the owners of a nearby building. Mice are really hard to mount because their skin is so thin, it's like working with tissue paper. Doing any detail work on something so small is a real challenge! I used wire, cotton, and foam to make the body and preserved the mouse with denatured alcohol and borax.

Happy one year of collecting to me!
exactly a year ago today i received my first s.kull in the mail!! I’ve had so much fun identifying, collecting, and talking about s.kulls with other vultures. In this post, i’m going to share with you all of the skulls i’ve bought in the past year. I’m not including pelts or little miscellaneous objects since i want to focus on collecting s.kulls from now on, with the very occasional pelt or taxidermy piece.
these are all my skulls!! i forgot to include the turtle and mouse but you get the idea
pine marten, two raccoons, and a mink
wild hog, cow, chicken, and domestic rabbit
whitetail doe and domestic dog
(not pictured, small turtle and mouse)
and this is my current setup! (the cow is on another shelf) i really love it and i can’t wait to collect more in the coming years!
