BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: CÉSAR (1976) - The stunning 1976 cloth-hardcover César monograph - English edition. With text by the Pierre Restany and large beautifully printed illustrations of over 200 of César's sculptural works in colour and black and white, including a wealth of his incredible Compressions and Expansions, along with a list of all works, biography, bibliography. Designed by Peter Knapp and Walter Rospert and printed in France. This is the 1976 English edition with dustjacket, and original cardboard slipcase, and still the nicest book on this great artist. César Baldaccini (1 January 1921 in Marseille - 6 December 1998 in Paris), usually called César, was a noted French sculptor. César was at the forefront of the Nouveau Réalisme movement with his radical compressions (compacted automobiles, discarded metal, or rubbish), expansions (polyurethane foam sculptures), and fantastic representations of animals and insects in bronze. His sculptural vision has heavy influenced the work of many for generations since. - One copy in the bookshop tomorrow and via our website. - #worldfoodbooks #césar #pierrerestany #nouveaurealisme #1976 (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

The principal concern of New Realism was how to respond to the changed role of art within the new consumer society, in view of the fact that fine art painting was dying. The group viewed the world as a source from which they could take parts and incorporate them into their art, as a way of bringing life and art closer together. More lyrically, they aimed for a "poetic recycling of urban, industrial and advertising reality". They preferred "reality" to abstraction, but they were wary of figurative art, which they regarded as petty-bourgeois or socialist realism (from the web) #PierreRestany #YvesKlein #JeanTinguely #Arman #DanielSpoerri #Dufréne #RaymondHains #MartialReysse #JacquesVilleglé #nouveaurélisme #catherinehollyarchive (at Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn)

Manifesto of "Nouveau Réalisme", 1960 a brief statement proclaiming "Constitutive Declaration of New Realism, Nouveau Réalisme—new ways of perceiving the real." signed by Pierre Restany, Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Daniel Spoerri, Dufréne, Raymond Hains, Martial Reysse, Jacques Villeglé The members of the nouveaux réalistes group tended to see the world as an image from which they could take parts and incorporate them into their works—as they sought to bring life and art closer together. They declared that they had come together on the basis of a new and real awareness of their "collective singularity", meaning that they were together in spite of, or perhaps because of, their differences. But for all the diversity of their plastic language, they perceived a common basis for their work; this being a method of direct appropriation of reality, equivalent, in the terms used by Pierre Restany, to a "poetic recycling of urban, industrial and advertising reality" #artmanifesto #PierreRestany #YvesKlein #JeanTinguely #Arman #DanielSpoerri #Dufréne #RaymondHains #MartialReysse #JacquesVilleglé #nouveaurélisme #catherinehollyarchive (at Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn)
