"Bulldogs!" The crowd shouted.
Amelia pushed herself off of Audrey and Claire's shoulders. Their hands pushed up at the bottoms of her sneakers, launching her high into the air.
Everything felt like it went in slow motion when Amelia was up in the air. The beat of the rain and the band seemed to slow down. The flash of Rachel's camera glinted in the rain around her. She twisted her body, feeling her muscles tense and stretch as she spun in the air, rain whipping off of her hair and the bottom of her skirt.
Amelia's back was to the ground now. She landed in the basket catch the squad spent days practicing. The sounds of the band's brass section, the rain, and Audrey's breathing came rushing back. She regained her footing, never letting go of Audrey's shoulder as the other River Vixens dispersed to retrieve their pom-poms.
Amelia let go of Audrey's shoulder. They walked toward the River Vixens' section of the bleachers.
Amelia and Audrey sat on the bleachers. They watched the football players slam into each other with brutal force, rain bouncing off of their uniforms.
Dylan scored a touchdown in the last 4 seconds of the game. The River Vixens, Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, Doug cheered for him.
Riverdale High had gotten 20 points. Centerville High had gotten 16 points.
Dylan took his helmet off and jogged over to Claire.
"You did it!" Claire yelled.
Claire kissed Dylan, not caring that some of the other football players were whistling and hollering at them. He tried to lift her but slipped on the mud, bringing them both down. She kissed him one last time before they were surrounded by hundreds of Riverdale students. As the two of them were pulled up by Justin and Olivia, Claire heard people chanting Dylan's name and couldn't help but join in.

There was a basketball game tonight.
Darcy was sitting on the bleachers. Riley was sitting next to her, holding his notebook and pen, ready to take notes. She had given him the task of writing about the game. Rachel was sitting next to him, holding her digital camera, ready to take pictures. Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug were sitting next to her.
Amelia, Claire, Audrey, Natalie, Megan, Olivia, and the other River Vixens stood to the right of Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug, pom-poms rustling in their hands as the Bulldogs ran out of the locker room and the marching band began to play.
Amelia wore a long-sleeved white turtleneck underneath her cheerleading uniform. White low-top sneakers with white laces were on her feet. Her long brown hair was parted in the middle and styled in barrel curls. A blue and gold bow was pinned to the back of her head, keeping her hair out of her face. She had on a light amount of black eyeliner, a light amount of black mascara, soft brown eyeshadow, and nude lip gloss.

The game started. A Riverdale student got the ball. He was the shooting guard. Darcy, Riley, Rachel, Brad, Chris, Justin, Courtney, Erica, and Doug stood up, cheering for him as he ran down the court and threw the ball into the net.
The game continued. Chris got the ball.
Chris was wearing blue Nike basketball shoes with white laces, blue knee-high basketball socks with two horizontal gold stripes on the top, blue basketball shorts with two gold vertical stripes on each side, and a sleeveless blue basketball jersey with a v-neck, two gold stripes on the collar, the word Timberwolves emblazoned on the front in gold letters with white trim, his last name emblazoned on the back in white, and the number 26 emblazoned on the back in white.
Chris was an excellent point guard. He was in the middle of every play, every pass, and every assist without ever dominating the court himself. He snuck past defenders and kept them on their toes with how quickly he could become unpredictable. Within just a few minutes, he had gotten 5 points.
A few seconds after halftime came to an end, a defender plowed into Christopher's side to get the ball, and the force of the impact is so strong that Christopher was knocked into the sidelines.
Rachel winced. "Fuck. That looked like it hurt."
The whistle was blown for an obvious foul.
In the end, Chris walked away with nothing worse than a twisted ankle. He sat on the bench for the remaining 5 minutes of the game.
Riverdale High won with a score of 20 to 11.

Kyle MacLachlan On #TwinPeaks, David Lynch And Playing Special Agent Dale Cooper (with 7 pictures)
Wearing this season's sharpest grey tailoring, no less
By Bruce Handy
Sprung from the considerable depths of David Lynch's id, with an assist from co-creator Mark Frost, Twin Peaks, one-part detective show, one-part soap opera, was a surprise hit in the early Nineties, running for two seasons — one nearly perfect, the other hit-or-miss. Thank Showtime (and Sky in the UK) for bringing it back for a belated third, along with its unlikely protagonist, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan. MacLachlan has served as something of a muse for Lynch, having also starred in the director's adaptation of Dune (1984), a famous misfire, and Blue Velvet (1986), one of the most memorable films of the Eighties. Filling out MacLachlan's résumé: the notorious Showgirls (1995); appearances in dozens of films and television shows; a 15-year marriage; and a recent second career as the owner of a Washington-state winery, Pursued by Bear.
I fully recognise that at 55, you're not going to look like 25. But still you have to put in a good effort. I always say it's not the zeros that are tough, it's the fives. It's not turning 40 or 50; it's 45, 55. Having hit 58, I think my sixties are going to be great, until I hit 65. [Laughs.]
Fear is a great motivator to stay in shape. A shirtless scene is a great motivator. Or naked scenes. Some people don't care. My hat is off to them. Jason Segel, I admire him. Will Ferrell — go, man! Because they look real. Look at movies from the Sixties and Seventies. When Steve McQueen takes his shirt off, he's not ripped. You're like, "Yeah, that's the real guy." I blame Arnold [Schwarzenegger].
I go where the role is. It has to fulfill certain criteria. Those criteria shift sometimes, depending on the bank account — which explains some of my choices over the years.
I didn't grow up saying, "I have to be an actor." I grew up saying, "I love this. I'm getting positive reinforcement, and I'm getting work." But my life is equally important. I'm happy to be off the grid for periods of time. Maybe I get a little anxious, again, depending on the bank account. But it doesn't define me.
When you hire david lynch, you let David Lynch do David Lynch. And you walk away. People have tried to take what he does and reshape it in some way, and… you can't. He's always been very clear about his vision.
Cooper is maybe my favourite character. There is a lot in him that is similar to me: his enthusiasm for coffee, Douglas firs and doughnuts. He tries to figure out who people are before he makes a judgment about them. He's the eccentric in the middle of an even crazier world, but he's your point person. He's all you've got going in.
What did I learn from Showgirls? I learned what not to do! My God. When the project came to me, I was like, "This is Paul Verhoeven!" I loved his early films: Soldier of Orange, Spetters, RoboCop. I read the script and thought, "this is really edgy. This is really sexual. This can shake things up a bit". And during the filming, it seemed fine. We shot some good scenes. Some of it was a little weird, like when I had to walk around the pool naked. Then I saw a screening of the movie for the first time and was like, "It's a disaster." Everyone took a huge hit; me, too. But I kind of enjoyed the experience of making it. I got to ski a lot during that time [laughs]. And I learned to see where something could go terribly, terribly wrong. I used to just look at the positive potential of a script, how it could be this [raises hand]. Now, although it's not really my nature, I also look at the opposite, the negative. It could be this, too [lowers hand almost to floor].
I've loved wine since high school, but with no understanding of what was and wasn't good. The first really good bottle I had was from David Lynch. He sent a bottle of Lynch-Bages to my hotel as a thank-you when I auditioned for Dune. I drank it and thought, this is some good wine!
By and large, I have been happy with my career. I've made a living. I've done some work that I'm proud of and some work that I'm not. And I'm still here. It's funny, I run into guys that are in my wheelhouse — similar age, been up for similar roles — and a common refrain, unless they're superstars, is, "We're still viable. We're still being hired." There's a lot of pride in that, just the resilience.

Nickname: Jacky, Jacky Medan..
Star Sign: Sagittarius but I’m pretty sure I was born in the wrong month (+ year/decade tbh)
Height: 179 centimeters (5′10.5″)
Time right now: 14:14 :) (2:14pm)
Favorite Music Artist: Celldweller/Valensia... idk
Song stuck in your head: none atm..
Last movie watched: part of the first Harry Potter movie when it was on tv recently
Last TV show watched: I watched a dutch cop show yesterday called Flikken Maastricht.. no, wait- I watched brooklyn 99 after that as well..
What are you wearing right now: a black t-shirt with a dark green zipped hoodie, red plaid/tartan (possibly flannel idk) pajama pants and I have a dark blue fleece blanket wrapped around me as well because it’s COLD in here..
When did you create your blog: made this account back in 2011, started using it in the second half of 2013
What kinds of stuff do you post: The Man from U.N.C.L.E., due South, things about my OTPs, my art, other people’s art, colour palettes, stuff about mental illness and/or autism, other fandoms I haven’t mentioned (the eagle, star trek tos, monty python, twin peaks..), fic recs sometimes, sometimes I liveblog shows I watch, personal things about my life, pictures of cabins and northern lights etc., otters.., memes and shitposts, things I find funny, sometimes important news events etc. idk.. a lot
Hogwarts house: Ravenpuff or Huffleclaw idk.. probably more (60-70%) hufflepuff..
Pokémon team: I only played pokemon go maybe 3 times and then gave up because I still have pre-paid and never have my mobile internet on (I just use free wifi) so when I leave my house it can’t load the map and has no idea where I am.. I once turned my mobile internet on for maybe 10 minutes and walked around a bit and that cost me way more than I’m personally willing to spend on such a thing and I didn’t really understand how the game works anyway..
the only other pokemon games I did play (red, crystal, ruby, soulsilver and pokemon stadium 1 and 2 and pokemon snap on my sister’s N64) do not have any “teams” as far as I know you’re just on your own trying to beat the elite four etc. so.. none, basically..
Favorite color: dark purple.. and petrol blue (the colour of this dress).. but basically I love almost all the colours as long as they’re combined in the right way in a pretty palette or something :).. I also love rainbows a lot.. one of the only colours I p much always hate is this shade of pink >__> *twitch* there’s very little combinations/contexts in which I could find that colour pretty.. and you’d probably never find me personally wearing white or orange because I hate to have them on my body for some reason idk, especially white clothes legit scare me.. but there might even be exceptions to those rules idek, colours are a complex concept..
Average hours of sleep: 6-8 I think.. but I’ve been having trouble getting out of bed in the morning lately even if I’m already long awake..
Lucky number: 9
Favorite characters: Illya Kuryakin, Napoleon Solo, Ray Kowalski, Benton Fraser, Ned the Piemaker, Special Agent Dale Cooper, Jim Kirk, Geoffrey Tennant, Esca Mac Cunoval, Marcus Flavius Aquila..
How many blankets do you sleep with: 1 in the summer, 2 or more in the winter (it’s freaking COLD in my room I have no central heating)
Dream job: idk something that doesn’t stress me out, isn’t full time and still brings in enough money to live off.. if possible something in a museum or involving colours/art
Following: 165 blogs, many of which aren’t active anymore so there’s less than that actually producing posts on my dash.. I’m the kind of person who still wants to be able to get through everything on my dash every day so I don’t follow people very easily/quickly (especially if they post a lot.. I also don’t unfollow people very quickly/often so I don’t want to end up regretting I followed someone after the fact..) but wether or not I follow you doesn’t necessarily say anything about whether or not I consider you a friend/if I like you or not :) there’s plenty of people I don’t follow back but still enjoy talking to.. It’s just that I’m too easily overwhelmed by too many posts on my dash..

Funny People is my favorite performance of myself to date. Even though it’s a comedy and there are serious moments, I really felt like Leo felt like a real person. It didn’t feel like I was playing myself. Whether it’s a comedy or drama, I just try to make it as realistic as possible. – Jonah Hill

It was at the start of 2005, when I was with the Argentine under-17 squad and I saw him chatting with Ezequiel Garay and some other players about the boots he’d brought back from the U.S.A. – Sergio Aguero
The Kate Winslet thing has been a shocker. I was like, that is the most ridiculous claim. Amazing, obviously. She’s been my idol since I re-enacted ‘Titanic’ and fell in love with Leo. And it’s a privilege to be called the next anything. But I suppose to be the next you is all you can do. – Florence Pugh
The Leo contains the essence of royalty. – Linda Goodman
The vibration of Leo, ruled by the Sun itself, is almost tangible, a thing you can actually feel throughout your whole being in the presence of a Lion or Lioness. — Linda Goodman
There are no words to describe Leo. He continues to break records every time one is put in front of him. – Gerardo Martino
There is something fundamental about Leo in terms of what he transmits to the supporters and what he transmits to the opposition when he starts to run at you. And I speak from experience. – Ernesto Valverde
There’s no really signature Leo DiCaprio role, like Jack Nicholson is Jack Nicholson no matter what movie he’s in. – Dennis Christopher
What I’d most highlight about Leo Messi is his huge sense of responsibility for the team. It shows in every game in every competition. – Ernesto Valverde
When I played Leonardo DiCaprio’s mother, they liked that Leo had very hooded eyes and a rounded nose with a ball. They said, They look like they could be mother and son. – Ellen Barkin
When Leo takes the record from me, it will hurt a little. But it’s not just anyone taking it away. It’s not a normal person. A Martian is taking it from me. That makes me feel a little better. – Gabriel Batistuta
You know, I am a Leo. Lion is a giant part of me. – Patrick Swayze

Internship Week 8
\\ the myth of the Lynchian Americana
Twin Peaks is one of the seminal shows in my life. As soon as the Varied Thrush appeared on the screen (source), I knew that this was my favorite show. Twin Peaks explores Americana themes – of love, of betrayal, of the television soap opera – surrounding Laura Palmer, a prom queen who was murdered by her father Leland Palmer. The mystery happens in a small town of 51,201 inhabitants (although I’ve been told that the creators wanted it to be four digits, but ABC feared that such a small town out not gain traction). FBI Agent Dale Cooper enters the northwestern town and meets all of its characters... It is revealed that Leland was possessed by an evil spirit named BOB, who was the “evil that men do.” This mythos is fleshed further out in The Return, the 3rd season of the show that aired 25 years after the original run. It is explains (without words!) that BOB was part of a bigger force, something so evil, and was released onto this world following the most heinous act of mankind: the atom bomb. The malicious spirits always existed, but the initiation of the most evil act allowed people to contact the truly evil spirits and grant them access to our own world.
Many themes and motifs in TP recur in Lynch’s prior works. In Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, white noise, electricity, flickering, currents, all evoke an ambiance of uncertainty, of a presence. In Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive, asphalt roads paint a certain sense of an ambiguous journey that is central to the American experience. In Blue Velvet, there is a pink waiting room, one so similar to the mood of the “Room above the Convenience Store,”which was a gray waiting space full of malicious spirits. Lynch’s works truly evoke a sense of familiarity and uncanniness – a woman so familiar and loved by all screams in distress – and mystery unfolds through suburban homes and cars and in very familiar neighborhoods.
Recap: I’m looking at significant landscapes in Nashville, most of them start in 1780 after the first settlers from North Carolina came to Davidson County, yada yada… I’ve gone on tours at historic homes, read at least 3 unique secondary/tertiary material per site, and have absorbed enough information to come to this conclusion independently.... (regardless of how misguided it is...)
The representation of historic homes is divorced from a lot of context, as was the process of settlement in early Nashville history. From that, Nashville has grown to an Americana city that rejects the landscape+earth as a spiritual background. BUT, David Lynch breathes life into that blank slate a vision of supernatural mythology.
Below, I try to work this out further and cite examples.
\\ the (lack of) spirituality in the frontier home
American frontier homes lack a connection to spirituality on earth. Traditional homes in Korea subscribe to feng shui (called pung-su-ji-ri 풍수지리). Indigenous and spiritual traditions dictated how to lay the foundations of a home, the direction of the home, the shape of the home… It is to my understanding that other cultures have had religious shrines incorporated in their homes, or that the spirits blended with the mortal world and they were considered and acknowledged in a living space. (For instance, in Korea, it’s typical have a space to host ancestral spirits.) Descriptions of homes typically include these factors: e.g. this property is located here because of… this room has these features to honor….
(풍수지리 effected where to settle. The middle - 명당 - indicates the best location to settle)
Descriptions of historic American homes inherently lack an acknowledgement of spirituality. In Nashville, most properties were chosen through the Revolutionary War Grant of a set number of acres. Some owners chose the land based on their proximity to a spring or a high topography. (Belle Meade, for example, originally belonged to the Dunhams. “Dunham’s Station” operated near Richland Creek on a higher ground and catered to travelers of Natchez Trace, a frequently travelled path by Native Americans and Europeans both.) But – and I recognize that this could be the bias of modern historians – it rarely describes any spiritual reason of choosing the land. A great example of this ‘rejecting the spiritual landscape’ is found at Travellers Rest, home of Judge John Overton: when he finally broke ground of his new property in 1790, he quickly discovered graves – multiple! – and named the place “Gogotha,” meaning “the place/hill of the skulls.” Archeological research determined the land to be a Mississipian Village (~1400 AD). That much is recognized and still researched, but as far as I know, that did not affect the lives of the Overtons.
(The Overton home, picture mine)
The way I understand how early Nashvillians settled is that they came onto a blank canvas. They choose their property strategically: proximity to water, near existing transportation routes, and on high land. Whether that was willful ignorance of the context or an intentional rejection of history I do not know. Early settlers were plagued by Native American attacks, but that was all that was, a happening. As far as I can tell, there as no connection to their strategic choice to any spirituality or historicity. (Again, I acknowledge that my understanding of this is filtered through secondary/tertiary historical analysis of the sites.)
Upon that land, settlers often laid out a simulacra of the old world. Popular English and Western European fashion unveiled itself onto this new world. The Belmont Mansion was built in the Italian Villa style with an English garden. The first few generations of Thompsons ordered tulip bulbs from Holland to decorate their gardens. If there were any gardeners available, most of these estates boasted employing European gardeners. (Talented masters or immigrant laborers? That’s not been disclosed in my readings...) Due to the gardens+grounds being traditionally never-lasting, none of those mimicry survive, but I’m told that they were an impressive part of the property and part of the fame...
(Plan view of Belmont, from History of Homes and Gardens of Tennessee published 1936.)
Additionally, preservation efforts reject the ‘lived-in-ness’ of the historic homes. Some of the historic homes have been lived in through the nineteenth century and some cases into the twentieth century as well. Restoration usually means to restore the house back to its period of significance, so the Overton home, for instance, was in-tact and used until 1954. (It was in the Overton family until 1946 and I understand that the Louisville and Nashville Rail Company used it as an office until 1954.) In 1954, it was donated to the Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee, and the group started to restore the home to be ‘period appropriate,’ back to Judge John Overton’s life time. Consequently, they re-acquired the exact or period-appropriate furniture into the homes, eliminated anything beyond that time, but still kept the A/C (or maybe installed it) for visitors.
(Overton house, presented by the guide wearing a period-appropriate costume. The dining room is arranged to be in summer time)
By presenting only a snapshot of the historic home, of a “period of significance,” it rejects the context before and after that particular era. In presenting only the architecture, it also eliminates a way to understand the literal geographic/physical context of the lives – in many of the tours I’ve been to, there was never any information about how the inhabitants went outside and interacted with the outer world. The gardens and the plantation, as mentioned, are no longer there (partially, the division of property is to blame). Religious habits, outside of churches built on plantations, are rarely mentioned.
And I think that ‘secular’ trend continues into the future. The land of Nashville has been divided and conquered; and those 640+ acres of tracts are eventually distributed by successors or by developers, who take the opportunity to prey upon the land and convert the vacant land into an occupied one. Radnor Lake is a great example: the 1,000-acre land once owned by the Louisville and Nashville Rail Company is now Tennessee’s first state park. The park studies the land’s relationship to Otter Creek (the source of the lake) and encourages natural+native growth for that habitat. The 85-acre lake itself is actually an artificial one created in an earthen dam and the water was supplied to the neighboring Radnor Yard. When diesel fuel took over, the lake was abandoned and proposals turn the property into suburban lots...
\\ conclusion
Settlers came to Nashville and picked out their land based on strategic advantages. In the narratives of the sites, rarely is spirituality or religion cited as a motivation to the site-choosing process. Through that, the existing context of the site (what had existed before and how) was rejected. European fashion and practices were imprinted onto that land, i.e. garden and mansion styles. Practices of preservation also reject any organic evolution of the ground and restore historic sites to a snapshot of the “significant period,” which is usually between 1780 and 1880 (roughly from the settlement until after the Civil War).
Eventually historic homes and properties were subdivided and those plots were subsequently chosen for only strategic or secular purposes (e.g. suburban neighborhoods). Those houses may be on roads with names of the early settlers (see: Belle Meade) but otherwise do not relate to the historic home nor the pre-European landscape.
David Lynch’s work fills that void with a modern mythology - of creatures that were caused by modern technology and greed. Electricity, which is so fundamental to the contemporary life, is exploited by the writer as a conduit of supernatural spirits.
Next week, I hope to further this examination with a focus on southern landscapes ... So that should be a tighter study on this subject.

Move Over Sports Cars! Dragsters, Funnies and Altereds Take Over Laguna Seca at Nitro Revival 2
If vintage, nitro-burning dragsters, Funny Cars, and altereds are your thing, Nitro Revival is your event. In just one year, Nitro Revival has gone from an experiment to a must-see happening for historic drag racing machinery.
In 2017, Steve Gibbs, along with a host of dedicated friends and family, had a vision to organize a standalone event that would rival those of the establishment. Nitro Revival was born, and the inaugural offering was held at the Barona Dragstrip east of San Diego. The deal was for one event at Barona, with the Revival’s future being uncertain.
All Smiles: Big Daddy Don Garlits found himself at the center of attention at the 2018 Nitro Revival. His weekend culminated with a trip to the top of the Corkscrew for a photo shoot with Swamp Rat 3.
Buzz started building when Revival 2 was announced, but it was the site that took the drag racing faithful by surprise. WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway was the place. Nitro Revival 2 would merge into the Raceway’s Spring Classic, also in its second year. The deal was inked and the tag line printed, “Where racing worlds collide!” Was the Monterey sports car crowd ready for this?
The event was held May 18-20, with Saturday the 19th being the feature day for Revival. Festivities started early on Friday with registration and a host of random fire-ups. Friday concluded on historic Cannery Row at The Clement Monterey, where Mike Dunn hosted a question-and-answer period with Hall of Fame drivers. The evening culminated with an autograph session sponsored by the Jim McLennan (the Champion Speed Shop founder) Drag Racing Foundation and the firing of Swamp Rat 3 on Cannery Row.
Nitro Haze: By day Bob Lawson works for the man himself, Connie Kalitta. But on the weekend, Bob slips behind the wheel as The Bounty Hunter. This beautiful dragster is owned and built by Allen Bridges of Simpson Safety Equipment.
Things got off to an early start on Saturday, as the popping of nitro-burning engines could be heard echoing through the hills of Laguna Seca. As part of the Revival, participants in Ace’s Hot Rod Hangout car show got to take their cars for a supervised lap around the legendary track.
Around lunchtime, push starts took place along Laguna Seca’s pit lane. About a dozen cars pushed off, showing everyone what Revival was about. The cars then parked nose toward the wall at the end of pit lane and stayed running, giving the crowd a small dose of what was to come later in the day.
No Way: Glenn Way and The Ground Shaker were among the fuel altereds at Nitro Revival. Glenn vacated the seat of The Ground Shaker for the weekend, turning the driver chores over to Dale Kraskey Jr.
The “Line of Fire” closed track activities for the day. Any car that could fire did, putting a big exclamation point on what had become very successful days for the Revival team. Cars were started in succession from one end of the paddock, down the row, and then up the opposing row.
Whether you wanted to get a sense of what this nitro thing was all about, or if you were there to bask in the nitro haze, there was no avoiding the roar or the sweet smell of nitro. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Tears were flowing about as fast as the nitro. Ah, heaven! As the last engine expired and the paddock fell silent, a roar erupted from the crowd, stomping their approval for what they had just experienced.
Tight Squeeze: Jim Cooper, his son CJ, and Boogie the Bassett Hound made the trip to Monterey from Washington. Jim’s Model A is powered by a Walt Austin–prepped Hemi. As a bit of trivia, Jim is credited with coining the nickname “Ace” For Ed McCulloch.
The icing on the cake came shortly after the Line of Fire. Word quietly circulated in the paddock that Big Daddy and Swamp Rat 3 were headed to Laguna Seca’s Turns 8 and 8A, better known as the legendary Corkscrew, for a photo shoot. This would be the first—and possibly the last—time a Top Fuel dragster would make its way onto the fabled hill. Sonny Messner was in the seat as Big Daddy smiled for the cameras.
When the crew tried to figure out how to get Swamp Rat back up the steep incline, Sonny shouted from the cockpit, “Just let go, it will be fine!” Everybody just looked at each other as Sonny sat back in the seat. The car was released, and down the hill went the dragster. In a spontaneous act, Sonny released the clutch and was able to get the engine to light as he drove the car back to the pits. Epic!
Stay tuned to nitrorevival.com for info on next year’s event.
Twins: The ageless Mr. Isky, styling in his new Bean Bandits jacket, holds court with a couple of guys who know a little bit about twin-engine dragsters. John Peters (right), owner/builder of The Freight Train, ran both twin small-block Chevys and twin Hemis. Walt Stevens drove Red Fogleman’s Odd Couple, which had a small-block Chevy sitting out in front of a Hemi.
It’s Alive: The long journey to find and restore the one-of-a-kind Buick-powered Skylark flopper named Ingenue has come full circle. Just days after Nitro Revival, owner John Lipori neared completion of the project as the 430ci Wildcat engine was brought to life. John will continue to bring the tune-up along and have this candy-apple-red beauty ready to sing at full song soon.
Fired Up: The drivers and their attire are part of the allure of an event like Nitro Revival. Being period correct is a must; an open-face helmet, fire/breather mask, and a pair of goggles are key. These drivers are strapped in for the mass fire-up on Saturday night.
Small Stuff: TV Tommy Ivo was the consummate showman, and his beautifully appointed racecars were works of art down to the last detail. The drilled and styled steering wheel of Tommy’s Barnstormer is finished with a personalized bolt cap.
Iconic: Historic memorabilia was plentiful at Nitro Revival, but none more unique than Roger Lee’s Smokers jacket. Roger proudly displays the jacket with his Masters and Richter tribute car.
Long Haul: The tale of Rich Guasco’s ’29 Ford has spanned the decades. Rich built the car when he was in grammar school, improved on it as the years went on, and won America’s Most Beautiful Roadster at the 1961 Oakland Roadster show. (For the full scoop on the car, see “Mr. Roadster,” May 2013.) Rich drove his pristine survivor to Nitro Revival.
Champion: Champion Speed Shop and its founder, Jim McLennan, are synonymous with the glory days of drag racing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jim’s son Bob keeps the legend alive with the Jim McLennan Drag Racing foundation, helping to sustain auto-shop classes in high schools and colleges.
Alias: Drag racer’s alter egos propelled them to great public notoriety and legend status. For Bob Muravez, it was just the opposite. Bob laid low and raced his way into the history books with a very unassuming alias, behind a mask of secrecy. Floyd Lippencott Jr. is seen here pushing off in Tom Hoover’s Fishbowl.
Aces: A big part of Nitro Revival was Ace’s Hot Rod Hangout car show, hosted by none other than Ed “The Ace” McCulloch. Ace took advantage of the early morning quiet to get his hot rod ready for the day ahead.
Honor: Ron Johnson was a big part of Nitro Revival becoming a reality. Ron passed last October, but his contribution to the sport lives on. Ron’s son Kol was in the seat of the TV Tommy Ivo Barnstormer for push starts. We would think the “victory” sign was for the success of something his dad helped create!
Soul Mates: The original Pure Hell driven by Dale Emery is pictured here with the present-day Pure Hell that races in the 6.0 Heritage Series class. The old car has been away from home for quite a while, spending time in museums and private collections. In April, Rich Guasco and company took the old car to Texas for Dale Emery’s funeral and then back home. As they were loading the trailers for Nitro Revival, it occurred to them that the two cars had never been side by side.
Familiar Territory: Big Daddy making some adjustments to the injector on Sonny Messner’s Swamp Rat 3b before a warm-up run on Friday. This is a Garlits-built re-creation of the destroyed SW3b. Of the three original Swamp Rat 3s built, two are restored and reside at the Garlits Museum.
The King: Jerry Ruth wears a hat that says, “I’m the Boss!” There probably aren’t a lot of people who would argue with him. But at the track, he’s known as “The King”—of the Northwest, that is. Aside from his Top Fuel world championship, Jerry is the first person to win Top Fuel and Funny Car at the same event, a feat he accomplished several times.
Sport’n: The Greth and Fisher Speed Sport Special has been starting events like Nitro Revival for many years, for good reason. The car was built in 1955 and retired in 1958. The restoration to race-ready status took place about 18 years ago. Here, the SSP is in a familiar spot, out in front of Steve Gibbs’ Ford for the start of push starts on Laguna Seca’s pit lane.
Reviver: We were surrounded by legends as we joined Steve Gibbs’ driver’s meeting prior to push-start practice Friday morning. When it was said and done, Steve humbly thanked everyone for coming, which was followed by an unidentified voice saying, “No, thank you, Steve!” and a round of applause for the father of Nitro Revival.
Cheers: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s Sr. Vice President of Marketing Melvin Record (left) and a crewman prepare to release Sonny Messner for his memorable journey down the Corkscrew in the Swamp Rat 3.
