On Proof: Pictures We Love

At the end of the year National Geographic staff bring together some of their favorite images from the past year. It’s an edit of the best of 2015—we’ve seen some amazing images and storytelling. These are the Pictures We Love.

It’s messy and cluttered and marvelous—just like life, most days. The scene bursts with color and patterns and skin in varying shades of suntan. It makes me smile and long for the sun on my face and the smell of saltwater in the air. The frame within a frame allows the viewer to see the clothes vendor’s face as he watches a potential customer: an everyday moment captured and turned into something special à la Martin Parr. The photographer’s unusual perspective adds a bit of humor to this bright beach tableau.

At the end of the year National Geographic staff bring together some of their favorite images from the past year. It’s an edit of the best of 2015, from the National Geographic Magazine, to Traveler and news to Your Shot, we’ve seen some amazing images and storytelling. These are the Pictures We Love.

A good photo should make you feel something. A great photo should move you. When I saw photographer Elliot Ross’ photo as I was editing October’s Best of Daily Dozen for Your Shot, I was overcome by the immediate intimacy and empathy I felt for this family before I even read the caption. Inspired by the work of FSA photographers like Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans, Ross has been photographing the rural working class, documenting their “deep sense of faith, family, and connectedness to the land.” It’s easy to forget when you live in cities like Washington, D.C., that there are still so many who rely on the land for their livelihood and that drama can play out in a single moment. This image transported me to this time and place and, more exceptional, an image I’ve never seen before.
