Yo, Welcome to my photography blog!

This is a photography project with a focus on older digital cameras sold before the mid 2000s. I've been working with these sorts of cameras since 2022, which grew from my interest in retro computers that I have had since 2020 or so. Here, I'll introduce you to my cameras, my computer rig, and try to convince you that this is a cool hobby.

General Q & A:

Whats in the name? - Kb refers to Kilobyte, all of the photos I take with these cameras only take up a little over 100 Kilobytes of digital storage per photo. FD refers to the physical media the photos are stored in, currently one camera uses floppy disks (FD), the other two use compact flash (CF) and smart media (SM) cards. unfortunately, their shortened forms do not rhyme and so they do not matter.

What can I expect from this blog? - amateur photography using old cameras, I guess. I'll say some nonsense below each photo but you're free to ignore it. I don't plan on reblogging anything here, so don't expect that. I am the star of this blog. me me me. I tend towards finding weird buildings/architecture, "liminal spaces", sunsets, and generally trying to see how well I can make a photo look like a blender render in a Kane pixels video. don't expect any consistency, though. the medium will remain the same but the vibes will absolutely fluctuate with my mood. I'll try and tag things correctly if it's off putting.

Are you a cool person? - I tend to be! I don't want this place to be alienating for anybody but assholes who don't deserve to see the stuff I do. being a tumblr blog, I follow a lot of the standard stuff. jerks are not welcome and I'm not gonna give you the pleasure of an argument if you do turn your head round these parts.

My Cameras

Mavica FD-7

released in 1997, this was the second of Sony's "Digital Mavica" line of cameras. it records photos of around 50Kbs in size to a standard 3 1/2" floppy disk. it has some standard features like a manual focus wheel, 10x optical zoom, and exposure control. I haven't found a strict source but I believe this camera is less than one megapixel. I actually have a few different Mavica cameras (a fd-71/75/83/85/87 and a cd-1000) but they aren't different from the fd-7 enough to justify being used often. I'll make note on individual posts if I use 'em at all.

Kodak DC220

released in 1999, with a quality of exactly one megapixel the DC 220 is a weird little thing. it has custom software, connects to a computer via com ports with a transfer speed of ~11,000 bit/s. (roughly 30-60 seconds per photo in my experience) you can add custom text to your photos in the cameras built in software, and attach custom audio to each photo. it is a pain in the butt to get working, but it's quirks make it worth the frustration.

Olympus E-10

made in 2000 with a quality of a whopping four megapixels, the Olympus E-10 is the newest addition to my collection, and possibly the nicest camera I'll ever own. it's a fixed lens DSLR camera capable of 4x zoom, you can easily adjust the aperture and exposure on the fly, it's photos tend to be a whole 100kb in size (1/10th of a megabyte!) and to be entirely honest I have no idea how to use it. but I will eventually!

My Computer

I try to use all era-appropriate tech to transfer photos and do any edits, this is the computer I do all that processing on! its a Dell Optiplex gx1- the daddy of pretty much any computer used in public schools (Chromebooks don't count) It's got a Pentium 3 CPU clocking at 500MHz, 512mb ram, running windows ME. it has all the original Kodak DC220 software installed, and I can't really access the Kodak's photos any other way. I've also got a few other weird bits attached to it -an HP sketch pro cad tablet and an external data cartridge SCSI device. both work, but I don't really bother to use them, they just look neat.

Taboba had been y/n's absolute favourite boba shop in Seoul, she first discovered it while she was studying abroad. Upon returning home she found out there was ONE outlet in Seoul, which was conveniently just a 10 minute drive from her parents house. But, they were closing down and she was moving to a different part of Seoul, half an hour away from the shop.

Growing up as the daughter of a big-shot movie producer, she was privileged enough to live in one of the expensive neighbourhoods of Seoul, in a big house over-looking the Han river. And though it was true that she was to eventually take over the company her parents wanted her to pave her own way and make her own name in the industry. Granted her heritage would certainly give her a boost in popularity.

She decided one of the first steps to make her own way would be to move into her own space and live by herself. So with the help of friends and family she chose a penthouse apartment for herself in Gangam and bought it (cus wth is rent when ur rich). But thats all irrelevant right now because she's not moving there for another week. Right now what's important is that she just parked her car outside the new boba shop that opened near her new apartment.

Bobobble.

It's a cute name even she cant deny that. She hopes with every atom of her body that the boba is good too. It was also owned by SeoulFoods, a company that sponsored most of SilverWoods' shows and movies, and also catered for their events.

The issue isn't bad boba, the issue is being as good as or topping taboba boba.

Stepping inside, the cafe looked like any other, it was simple, with mood lighting, wooden floors and comfy looking leather seats. But there was one recurring theme. Cats. It wasn't a cat cafe, yet, cute pictures of cats doing stupid things were hung up on the walls, the bookshelf was shaped like a cat, the little plant pots on the table were cats that looked like they had leaves growing out of their heads. Overall, a-lot of cats.

Y/N made her way to the counter and luckily didn't have to wait too long considering it was 11 AM and everyone was either at work or at school, no long lines. She greeted the barista and placed her order, payed for her drink and then chose a table by the window. Good for working and people watching.

Y/n's first mistake today was forgetting her laptop charger at home, but she was already on the highway when she realised and couldn't turn back even if she wanted. Now the question was if her laptop was already charged or if she would open it and it would die in the middle of her editing a scene.

79%. Not bad, good enough to edit at least one scene. She started opening the softwares she needed to work and got started.

Soon enough her drink arrived, paired with a slice of cheesecake. Wait... Cheesecake? YN hadn't ordered any. Her original plan had been to have her drink and order a sandwich if she got hungry a while into working.

Maybe I should ask the server. Luckily for her he was walking by after serving another order.

"Um, excuse me?" She called out.

"Yes, ma'am"

"Uh, I only ordered a drink, i was served cheesecake as well are you sure it isn't someone else's?"

"Ah, yes, it's on the house, our manager said there's a newcomer gift for today, and since it's your first time visiting Bobobble, you qualify for it!"

"Ohh, I see, well um thank you so much!"

"No, problem ma'am, enjoy your meal!"

Newcomer gifts huh? Lets hope this boba is also good because so far I'm liking this place.

YN reached for her cup of bubble tea and immediately noticed logo. A cat holding a banner that said bobobble. Omg cute pls be good i want to come back here.

Bringing the straw to her lips, she took and sip and...

"Holy shit" She whispered to herself.

Looks like bobobble just gained a new and very loyal customer.

In the break room, a barista sat with their phone in front of them, voice recording app open.

"Dear diary, today the owners son Taesan came to overlook the store. He's a chill guy around my age but he's generally pretty quiet. Anyways, around 11 AM a girl walked in with her laptop bag and stuff, she ordered her drink and sat down then started working on whatever it was that she was working on, she was pretty nice but thats not the point

"the issue here is that when i was going to serve her drink, Taesan told me to take some cheesecake for her and tell her it was on the house as a welcome gift for her first time here. I didnt know we were doing one of those so it was news to me but i didn't question it.

Linux Laptop Install 2

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish).

After it had installed, I checked for any outstanding system updates and then I configured Ubuntu's personalisation as follows: - Set my theme colour to Blue - Change the system theme to use the Dark theme - Changed the default position of the dock ‘left’ to ‘bottom’ of screen. - Set a desktop background

I have also set the dock to Auto-hide when windows overlap it to save workspace size.

I downloaded and installed Google Chrome and installed a number of apps through the Ubuntu SNAP store, these include: GIMP VLC Media Player For more information on SNAP see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snap_(software) I will install more apps through the Ubuntu Store as I find out more about what's available. I found this laptop's performance has dramatically improved compared with Windows 10.

However the Bluetooth and the camera don't work properly due to hardware issues which were there before.

I connected the Epson printer to the Ubuntu laptop and printed a test page successfully.

Also, the laptop has a maximum display resolution of 1366x768 pixels making it quite restricted when moving and spacing all of the windows on-screen.

The muti-media function keys on the laptop work perfectly with Ubuntu. 

These include:

Search, Brightness, project, touchpad, media playback & volume controls.

I really like the 'Eye of GNOME' Image Viewer that comes with this distribution.

I like its simple yet functional user interface, how snappy it feels to use, its support for SVGs (Scalable Vector Graphics) and transparent images.

The file manager is called GNOME Files (previously Nautilus).

I played with LibreOffice Impress and edited some pictures in GIMP.

I also tested a 4K YouTube video which played flawlessly on the laptop as shown in the Activity Monitor!

In the future I might try installing other Linux distributions to test.

Making Kinetic Typography - working with sequencing files

Because I was absent from our week 9 class, I've had a look on Canvas at the class activities we did and the SDL (To continue working on our type animation), and also the presentation slides uploaded to teams.

Stop Motion

This week focused on moving image sequences for stop-frame animation and time-lapse photography. 'In computing and non-computing contexts, a file sequence is a well-ordered, (infinite) collection of files, usually related to each other in some way'.

Continue to develop individual kinetic-type projects

Keep process work up to date on blogs

since my kinetic-type animation won't be using the method of stop motion, I will spend less time on this blog and more on completing my animation. But, it is still important for me to understand this process for the future, so I've done some external research plus taken notes from the presentation slides which I will paste here.

Basics of stop motion animation

Stop-motion animation is a simple way of making animated films. By gradually moving objects against a backdrop, and taking photos at each stage, you can create the illusion of continuous motion.

Finalise the script and/or storyboard. Get together all the necessary props, backdrops and equipment (camera, tripod, lights). Darken the room so you’re completely independent of natural light. Ensure you can transfer the pictures of your camera to your editing software. Pick a quiet space – a room, a car, or anywhere else that isn’t exposed to noise – where you can record any sounds and voice-overs you might need.

The two main styles of stop-motion animation: 2D cut-out style and 3D style. The 2D cut-out style involves using paper and includes steps such as writing the storyboard, drawing and cutting out the backdrop and figures, and taking photos. On the other hand, the 3D style requires creating figures, props, and the film set using materials like modelling clay. It mentions that shooting a 3D stop-motion film is generally more time-consuming compared to a cut-out animation.

File Sequencing and its Importance:

Taking photographs for stop motion:

The number of photos needed for a successful stop-frame animation or time-lapse moving image will vary. A smoother final product will be produced if more photos are taken in a shorter amount of time. Keep in mind that a tripod is a necessity for your camera, and it must always be kept still. Use the cable release function when shooting a stop-frame animation sequence to prevent touching the camera and creating a camera shake. The camera needs to support an automated time-lapse function if you're taking time-lapse pictures. These can be set to take pictures automatically at a specific time.

After a new after-affects file has been set up:

in order for the sequence to work all photographs must be saved into one folder

in after effects choose 'file-import-file'

Select the first file from the list. Do not select any other files, just the first file.

Make sure that Import JPG Sequence is selected and click open.

Into your composition, drag the sequence file. You might need to resize your photo to fit the format, depending on the size of the original file.
