Content
Aboud Saeed is a writer of anecdotes, aphorisms and comments on life, his mother, smoking, the political situation in his country and the world. His black humour and accurate observations of absurdities inherent in everyday life, manage to open up a different, more 'human', view of his country than what we usually get to hear via the media.
Aboud Saeed was born in 1983 and lives in a small town called Manbidsch in the province of Aleppo in North Syria, which was victim to heavy bombing in 2012 and 2013 by the Assad regime. Saeed lives with his mother and seven siblings in one room in a small house. After finishing the 9th grade he left school and did an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and welder, which has been his profession for the past eleven years. For three years he worked as a migrant worker in a plastics factory in Libanon, at which time he lived in a tin shack. In 2008 he finished his A-Levels and enrolled at university to study economics, however due to the political climate the university is currently closed. In 2009 he opened a Facebook account and began writing daily status updates. His first book, The Smartest Guy on Facebook is a selection of these, in which he tells stories of his mother, Facebook, smoking, love and general everyday life in the middle of Syria's brutal conflicts. In 2012 the Lebanese daily newspaper Annahar wrote of Saeed, ‘To go on Facebook without meeting Aboud Saeed is like going to Paris and not seeing the Eiffel tower’.
The Foreign Office has allowed Saeed to travel from his home in Syria to Germany without being in possession of a valid passport. His presentation at the Kunstverein will be translated from Arabic into German by Sandra Hetzl. Saeed's book will be available in printed form for the first time.
Press:
“The Syrian Bukowski” (ZDF/Aspekte)
“Read this book! It is amazing!” (Andreas Schäfer, Der Tagesspiegel)
“My first Ebook, amazingly good!” (Björn Kuhligk, Facebook)
“Personal, political, lyrical, funny” (Margarete Stokowski, sonntaz)
Excerpt from The Smartest Guy on Facebook:
09 May, 2012, 12:25pm Also, despite the civil war / While my mother and I sit and smoke together, I tell her, “Mom, take a long drag, drag so deep you feel the smoke playing in your heart.” My mom takes a drag and laughs happily. “Mom, tell me, you want to enter paradise right? Then repeat after me, ‘Fuck the Sunnis and the Shi’ites and the Christians, and the Druze, and the Jews, and the non-believers, and the Muslims…all of them.” My mom hesitates, looks at me, her eyes all red from the smoke, and she asks me, “But is it ok to say something like that?” “Sure mom of course! What’s wrong with that?” 210 Likes
