A few years ago this would have been one of my worst nightmares. Now it feels like a rare honor to share space with this juvenile Tiger shark under the guidance of championship freediver and shark conservationist @denistemae. He helped French Polynesia become the largest shark sanctuary in the world so it felt really right that my first tiger experience happen under his guidance. These are not animals to be seen casually, but endangered ones to be deeply respected and protected for the health of global ecosystems. - In Tikehau lunch was what we picked, cleaned, or harvested by hand.… A few years ago this would have been one of my worst nightmares. For a tiny coconut tree covered atoll there was a richness of experiences and people I haven’t found in many other places. We stayed on an island with 10 small bungalows and spent our days on the water seeing a lot of wildlife and very few people. If you’re someone who lives for grassroots experiences and incredible diving #Tikehau (particularly tikehauoceantour) I cannot recommend highly enough. - I am so appreciative to tahititourismnorthamerica and airtahitinui for the chance to spend time in French Polynesia with scientists, NGOs and conservationists on this ecotourism focused itinerary. #LoveTahiti #PickYourParadise - Photo by silkymerman. After day 8 of diving in French Polynesia I had just started to think, “ok I’ve seen it all”, when in swoops a herd? Group? Pod?🤔 of the most beautiful otherworldly eagle rays 40 feet below us! They’re like underwater kites riding an unseen wind. The most I had ever seen prior to this was FIVE at a time and I thought that was lucky!! @silkymerman thinks he counted more than fifty as they gently glided in circles for nearly an hour. No words.
