The alarm sounds at 05:30am and out of pure habit I groan and then remember the reason we are getting up so early, and it’s not to go to the gym, or work, or a dog walk... it is to go wine tasting at Cafayate (a town in Salta Provence)!

Half an hour later we are running through Salta in the dead of morning having underestimated the walk to the bus stop. Luckily we arrive in time and off we go.

The 4hr bus ride flew by thanks to the authentic views along the way which depicted what I’d imagine life on Mars to look like; rusty red hills that both rolled and jagged, cacti and tortured trees, rogue horned bulls and a Gaucho riding his horse alongside his hound. There were also the occasional huts with chipped paintwork and coca-cola logos.

We arrive in Cafayate and walk to our first winery called “Bodega Nanni”. A family owned winery which only makes organic wine. It’s very unlikely that myself and Ricky don’t enjoy a red so the highlight of this tasting was actually “Torrontés” which is a deceiving white wine in terms of it smells sweet and fruity but turns crisp and dry as soon as it hits your mouth. I will definitely be sourcing this when I return home! Although we enjoyed all reds, it was great to try a “Tannat” wine which is quite exclusive to South America.

We then went to a winery called “Bodega El Transito” which was less of an experience but wine is wine! We quickly moved on and got a taxi to “Bodega Piatelli” as we heard it’s a great spot for lunch with its set menu and wine pairings for each course (still extremely affordable!). Bodega Piatelli was set back from the main road and was surrounded by vineyards and panoramic views of the Andes. It was honestly a wine lovers paradise, and that’s before they have completed their 2020 plans to turn it into a wine resort where you can stay, eat, drink wine, and swim in the pool with incredible views.

Turns out you need a reservation but it worked in Ricky’s favour as that meant we could indulge in some empanadas at the bar with a nice chilled glass of wine! After that we were privileged to an unintentional private tour of the vineyard and tasted some very delicious wines. Again, assume the reds were all our favorite, but a highlight of the tasting was a rosé made from Malbec grapes which we ended up purchasing!

We had a very sleepy bus ride home after lots of sun and wine. We both agreed that our favorite winery was Bodega Nanni, due to its character and how authentic it felt to Cafayate.
