“do you think caesar and joshua explored each other’s bodies” i think joshua slid the barrel of his gun into caesar’s mouth one night in their tent, knee rested between his thighs on the throne, and unprompted caesar wrapped his lips around it. i think caesar came without being touched and decades later he still denied any of that meant he was gay

pia desideria - благие намерения
Tumblr media Tumblr media

"Unhappy man ! Who will rescue me from this body of death?"  Pia desideria of Herman Hugo, engraved and published in Antwerp in 1624 by Boëce van Bolswert, was "the most popular religious emblem book of the seventeenth century".

Quote
Since I must acknowledge that I have nothing which is my own, but that everything belongs to God, and I am appointed to be a steward over it, I am not at all free to keep what is mine when and as long as I please. On the contrary, when I see that, for the honor of the householder and the need of my fellow servants, love demands that I use what is mine, I must not hesitate to offer it as community property which, to be sure, my neighbor cannot demand by civil right but which, according to the divine right of love, I dare not withhold and keep to myself as long as my neighbor’s needs cannot be met in another way.

as caesar’s terminal illness progresses i like to think he begins to hallucinate that joshua is there beside him. he talks to him often, when no one else is around, discussing the fate of his empire should he ever be taken too soon. the certainty of death frightens him, he can admit that to joshua now. as the tumour conquers more of his brain tissue the hallucinations get worse. he’ll sense joshua’s hand on his cheek, his dry lips brushing against caesar’s jaw. the bandages come off between caesar’s fingers. all that torched skin, oozing and angry and very much alive, very much present. his former confidante’s voice in his ear—now you can feel it too. when vulpes walks in, caesar is writhing on the ground, desperately trying to stamp out imaginary flames

Today in Christian History
Tumblr media
Today is Tuesday, February 5th, the 36th day of 2019. There are 329 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
1631: Roger Williams arrives in Massachusetts. Five years later he will flee to Rhode Island after questioning the fusion of church and state in Massachusetts. At Providence, he will establish the first Baptist church in America and his writings on religious liberty will influence the development of religious tolerance in the colonies.
1705: Death in Berlin of German theologian and clergyman Philipp Spener, author of Pia desideria. He had been known as the “Father of Pietism.”
1812: Rev. Jonathan Allen preaches a sermon in Haverhill, Massachusetts, “on the occasion of the young ladies about to embark as wives of Rev. Messieurs Judson and Newell, going Missionaries to India,” “ordaining” Harriet Atwood and Ann Hasseltine as assistant missionaries.
1835: Twelve American Congregationalist missionaries first see Africa from the deck of a ship through a mist. Among them is Daniel Lindley who will win renown educating Africans and pleading with the Dutch-descended Boers to ease their inflexible racism.
1851: Death in Hackney, of Congregationalist John Pye-Smith who had shown ways of reconciling geology and Scripture and been active on social issues such as the corn laws and slavery.
1864: Fanny Crosby writes her first verses for composer William Bradbury, “A Home Beyond the Tide,” the beginning of a long and fruitful hymnwriting relationship.
1900: Death of Pandit Kharah Singh. He had wandered India preaching Christ.
1918: Russia’s Communists issue a Decree on the Separation of Church and State that strips the church of legal rights and the power to hold property.
