Honouring and Celebrating Women’s Human Rights Defenders at the AWID Forum

Every year, AWID celebrates and commemorates Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD’s) and LGBTQI activists who are no longer with us. 

At AWID’s 12th International Forum on Women’s Rights in Development, held in April 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey, we launched an online photo exhibition featuring photographs and biographies of women’s rights leaders from around the world.  

As part of this ongoing effort, we invite all of the folks coming to the forum in Brazil to join us for a ceremony to commemorate activists and WHRDs who have passed away or who have been assassinated for their activism. 

We will be unveiling a mural featuring the names, portraits and stories of activists and WHRDs. The unveiling  will be accompanied by ritual, music, and dance as we honor their memory, and celebrate the courage and passion of activists and WHRDs struggling for justice world-wide.

We invite all of you to co-create the mural with us by bringing with you to Bahia, the names, portraits, images, and poems that honor the memory of the activists and WHRDs dear to your heart and your movements.
