Physics was exciting and fun but the only way Wren could really convince your average college student of that was in the process of building something that would fling or launch or explode something. He might’ve been a college professor for the last two years, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t also a man in his twenties. He also enjoyed the flinging, launching, and explosions but from what he liked to think was a neater standpoint.  There was the pride he felt now as he checked the catapult they’d built in the PHYS101 class he’d been TA’ing for this semester. They’d built the catapult and chosen every other element involved, the fourteen pound watermelon-- named Thanos, the exact right angle to launch it, and had calculated the force, the trajectory, everything. He was just there to execute it and record the results on camera for them to witness next class. It was all set, now, as he checked and recorded the wind speed for their notes. The light breeze shouldn’t affect the trajectory at all, so Wren wasn’t worried. He wasn’t worried about anything, since he’d gotten permission to very thoroughly block off the quad he’d be using as a landing pad. All he felt was excited as he finally set the countdown timer to launch. Ten seconds ticking down and he only got more excited, bouncing a little on his toes just to let out a breath of excitement as Thanos launched right off the balcony and down into quad. The scream that followed in perfect tandem with the splat stopped his heart and Wren was running-- no, sprinting, down to where Thanos was projected to land. There were six flights of stairs to maneuver and he flew down them. By the time he reached the ground he was out of breath but so adrenaline-fueled that he overshot his destination a little, trying to backpedal to make sure the girl he’d nearly killed with a fourteen-pound watermelon was alright. “I’m sorry I-- You weren’t supposed to be-- You alright?” he wheezed, remembering childhood inhalers with fondness as he struggled to get some air back into his lungs.

Helping out a colleague in need, I subbed in a second class today, and so I spent 1.5 h interacting with 200 new faces. But, the students in that class also saw a new face (mine). Therefore, there was some respect and tentativeness on both sides.
