I have this deep "ick" around using photofeeler to level up my swiping game, because I have scrupulosity disease around manipulation, and 99% of people would say I'm false positiving to even call being hot or photogenic manipulation.
But intentionally becoming more hot is obviously an attempt to assault more people with more psychic damage more of the time! You're like trying to make people think less clearly on purpose!
Theres an old old humaniterations essay called "sexual attraction: should we shoot it and bury it out back? The case for maybe not" that is the only time I've felt seen and heard about this.

Bad at Judging Dating App Photos?
You Probably Suck at Picking Your Best Dating App Photos!
Nicholas Epley, a behavioral scientist at the University of Chicago, conducted an experiment of undergrads to determine how good-looking they were to the opposite sex. He found that predictions by students were not significantly better than chance.
As Epley said, “Those people had no clue about how attractive they were, seen in the eyes of others.” Epley suggests the reason we are such bad judges is that “other people are novices about us, while we’re experts.”
This ignorance about one’s own attractiveness extends to photo selection, according to a study reported on the Photofeeler blog:
New Study Confirms: You’re Bad at Judging Your Own Pictures, Posted on May 20, 2017
We often have our own favorite photos, thinking they show us in the best light for Dating App Photos . However, strangers tend to choose different images as the most flattering.
A recent study published in Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications, titled “Choosing Face: The Curse of Self in Profile Image Selection,” reveals that self-selected profile pictures often make less favorable impressions than those chosen by others.
The findings suggest that our perception of our own images differs significantly from how others view them, making us prone to selecting less flattering photos.
More Photo Selection Advice
Vida Select, a team of matchmaking experts, shares some valuable tips on their blog:
Have someone else choose your profile picture.
Ditch the boring neutrals and opt for red.
Accentuate your jawline.
Put your best face forward—usually the left side.
Utilize the “Ugly Friend Effect.” (Research suggests being next to someone with similar features who’s not quite as attractive can boost your appeal.)
Smile!
Take photos during sunrise or sunset. Avoid flash photography; it can age you by seven years.
Dress for success. Photos in a coat and tie are generally viewed more favorably.
Peter White makes these three photo suggestions from a study of Stefan Pierre Tomlin, a tall, black British pilot and model in his 20s, allegedly the most “Swiped-Right Man on Tinder”:
First photo: Use a bright background to stand out. A great background can enhance your photo and reflect your personality.
Show some skin: A photo in swim trunks while on vacation can make you appear more interesting. However, keep in mind that shirtless photos can be controversial and may depend on various factors like your age and physique.
Vary your angles: Include a mix of photos where you look polished and casual. Hobby photos can also help showcase your personality. Don’t forget to add images that highlight your trustworthy side, like one with a pet.
Tips to Keep in Mind:
Tip 1: You’re not the best judge of your own photos. Just like people in Morocco consult friends before making important purchases, you should seek opinions on your photos to avoid bias.
Tip 2: The background matters. While professional photos with neutral backgrounds are solid choices, don’t hesitate to try a vibrant one to make your profile pop.

Unit 12 Day 4
In Unit 12: Assignment #4, I explored two surprising aspects of selfies from Professor Gernsbacher's lecture video and delved into the reasons behind the discrepancy between our perception of ourselves in selfies and in real life.
First, I was surprised to learn about the long history of selfies and the weak link between selfies and psychopathy/narcissism. This knowledge challenges common misconceptions and negative stereotypes surrounding selfie-taking behavior. The realization that selfies have been a part of human culture for centuries and are not necessarily indicative of negative personality traits provided a more nuanced understanding of the phenomenon.
Second, I chose to investigate why we don't think we look like our selfies. This is a topic I have a personal interest in, as I, along with some friends, often feel dissatisfied with our appearances in selfies. After examining the articles by Feeney (2014), Krause (2018), and PhotoFeeler (2017), I learned that several factors contribute to this discrepancy, including the difference between our mirror and true images, distortion caused by the short distance between our face and the camera, and factors such as camera distortion, 2D vs. 3D perception, and the brain's automatic adjustments.
This assignment has broadened my understanding of selfies as a cultural and psychological phenomenon. I am now more aware of the historical context of selfies and the various factors that can influence our perception of ourselves in photographs. In addition, I gained insights into the limitations of media portrayals and the importance of critically analyzing research findings before accepting sensationalist headlines. Overall, this assignment has enriched my knowledge of the complexities surrounding the selfie phenomenon and deepened my understanding of the role it plays in our society and our self-perceptions.

UNIT 12: Personality and the Internet
Big 5 Personality Traits
The big 5 personality traits are Neuroticism, Extroversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. Extraversion includes characteristics such as sociability, talkativeness, and emotional expressiveness. Agreeableness includes attributes of trust, altruism, and kindness. Conscientiousness includes high levels of thoughtfulness, impulse control and goal oriented behaviors. Openness has characteristics such as imagination and insight. Neuroticism includes emotional instability, anxiety, and irritability. People will fall on a spectrum for each trait, rather than assigning people to categories. Categorizing people into personality types is problematic because it blatantly excludes certain traits that people could have. The big 5 puts everyone on a spectrum for each trait rather than saying they don’t have certain traits. Big 5 personality tests also produce widely consistent results, unlike many online personality tests.
Proportion of Variance Explained
Based on Jeremy Miles 2013 article, proportion of variance explained explains how much people vary on certain outcome variables. You use a predictor variable, such as agreeableness, to calculate a predicted score for each person on an outcome variable, such as internet use. You then calculate the difference between the predicted score and the actual score to see how much variance is explained with your predictor variable. If your predictor variable has low scores, such as 2% or 3%, then your predictor variable is now a good explanation for the variance.
Personality traits are terrible predictors of multiple forms of internet use. One of the few things that extraversion could explain was 13% of the variance of number of Facebook friends and -13% of variation of Facebook addiction. They found that age was a good predictor of problematic texting use and social media use, where getting older predicted less use. They also found that much of the variance in the enjoyment of online trolling is explained by sadism, machiavellianism, and psychopathy. Overall, there are better predictors of internet use than personality.
Selfies
Selfies have existed for centuries, long before the internet. Painters would paint self portraits of themselves, such as Vincent Van Gogh’s 3 dozen portraits he painted through his life. Humans like to turn the camera around on themselves, long before we had them built into our phones. Some famous selfies include buzz aldrin’s selfie out in space, Duchess Anastasia’s mirror selfie, and Jackie Kennedy’s mirror selfie. Some of the early cameras required multiple people to hold them up to get their selfie. Current society thinks that taking selfies is not only something new, but something indicative of a pathologic personality. There have been many articles claiming that selfies are linked to narcissism and psychopathy, but it’s just not true. Based on the actual study, psychopathy only explains 3% of selfie taking and narcissism only explains 4%. The best predictor of posting a selfie is the number of other photos a person posts.
To answer the question "Why don’t we think we look like our selfies?," Feeney's 2014 article explains that its not our face, its how our brain works. We are used to seeing our face in a mirror, and when we take a selfie and the image is flipped, our asymmetrical face looks wrong to use because our brain prefers the version we see in the mirror. Krause's 2018 article also explains that the distance from the camera can affect how our features look, like how selfies taken 12 inches from the face can make your nose look 30% wider. Photofeeler's 2017 blog post also explains that going from 3D to 2D creates optical illusions because we can't see some of the 3D features.
Humblebragging
Humblebragging is to make a seemingly modest, self-critical, or casual statement that is meant to draw attention to one’s admirable or impressive qualities or achievements. Essentially, you’re trying to get away with bragging about yourself by using a phony show of humility. A study on humblebragging found that it is incredibly common in everyday life, but it is often ineffective. People use humblebrags to be seen as competent and to be liked by others, but this method of self-presentation often backfires because they are seen as insincere. It actually makes people like them less and see them as less competent. The study also found that humblebragging is less effective than straightforward bragging.

Need a lesson in humility?
Nothing quite like an ego boost or deflate based on the group opinion of how datable you may or may not be... and here I thought I was a 7 on a good day (or so I was going into it last night)... lol.
Interesting, both from a social construct (we all do this in mate selection whether we actually say it or not), but more so is how individual bias is dealt with when applied to a median. Context of the voter is taken into account if they normally vote high / mid / low. So while you can restrict voting to either / or / both gender, an age range, unfortunately you aren’t given the metadata (age, gender) of the person voting on you.
8 of y’all can bite my ass 😂😂 The flipside to that is 5 of them are historically biased as voting low to very low.
Voting is just part of the gig if you want to participate (it really helps to just get over yourself and see constructive criticism for what it is), since these can be really subjective I try to vote the same way based on:
smart = are you enjoying yourself / your activity trust = dressed for the occasion, look like you belong, with others attract = good skin tone, a haircut that works well for you, dress well, personal aesthetic
Next up, just women alone (who knows if the karma biters are guys or not), then women of only a particular age range.

Clever Usernames for Dating made Easy
Dating as a geek requires combing through normies and too much dating through the same group of locals. But to understand someone fully, I think you need both aspects of them, because as much as we try to say we are not our job, a part of us is our job,” he told the Guardian. In addition to BeLinked, there are apps for those looking for an even more niche dating app than The League. Linking online dating apps to LinkedIn was “a stroke of genius”, according to Rick Nguyen, a 28-year old entrepreneur and co-founder of Spot Trender. “We are pretty much the only application that ties directly to LinkedIn and only LinkedIn,” said Fischer. We provide bespoke rebranding to partners who are looking to extend their brand and leverage their audience loyalty. “The brand of The League is really for these ambitious driven, young professionals that want to date other ambitious, driven young professionals,” explained Amanda Bradford, founder of The League. Relative dating includes methods that rely on the analysis of comparative data or the context (eg, geological, regional, cultural) in which the object one wishes to date is found.
Their presence on archaeological sites is used to date the soil layers and the objects and events they are associated with and thus contributes to refine the chronology of sites. “They love it. It attracts other people that are looking to lead the same lifestyle as they have been leading,” he explained. Hoffower, Hillary. "Channing Tatum is reportedly looking for love on Raya, the exclusive dating app for the rich and famous that accepts 8% of applicants. Here's what you should know about how it works". I was like No 11,000 and I thought: ‘Oh, I guess this isn’t going to happen’,” said Ratcliffe, who lives in East Village in New York City and works in digital entertainment and media. Information for Area 2 thus derives from sampling the kiva suites in the east half of the canyon bottom. Also interesting is that when either username was shown alongside his picture on Photofeeler, he scored less than half as attractive when compared to just the photo, with no dating username at all. This pioneer dating website launched in 1995, has users based in 24 countries around the world and a detailed matching algorithm. נערות ליווי בקריות A dating website must have a sign-up page to get the users registered and give them access.
Wherever you are, we have singles waiting to meet you! In general, dating over 50 has stayed relatively the same, it’s just the diversity of ways in which we can meet people that has continued to evolve. It used to be that if you wanted to meet someone of a certain caliber, you would venture to a particular bar. “It’s really problematic, but I would want to know if someone is not into me for that reason because that’s definitely not someone I would want to talk to. “I think that’s absurd and ridiculous, but as an African American woman in the dating pool, it would be nice to know that someone I was matched with doesn’t not like black girls,” said White. While this give us hope, we know that navigating the World Wide Web of dating sites can be overwhelming and frustrating to say the least. The app has had 300,000 downloads around the world and, according to Shuster, 50% of Luxy’s verified users have $500,000 in assets or more.
“Clearly we are having a bit of fun with the tagline and the headline to get people talking about our app,” said Darren Shuster, principal of Pop Culture PR and the spokesman for Luxy. “Our requirements for women are just as rigorous as our requirements for men. Women in the U.S. Prices are in U.S. “However, instead of saying ‘It’s Tinder for rich people’ we simply decided to say that we are Tinder minus the poor people. Among them is Luxy, self-described as Tinder without the poor people. The League has been described as Tinder for the elites. She has been on the waitlist for The League since February. And you’ll have to be driven to make it into The League - there’s a waiting list 100,000 people long. Now there’s an app for that. If so, check out our dedicated guide to dating online in Canada now. Maybe now the relationship can flourish.

swipemaxing? photofeeler? jesus fucking christ why don't people just wavedash and edgehog themselves some pussy. the argument against whatever you're talking about is not that it's maladaptive, it's that it's counterintuitive by being cringy as fuck. this kind of shit is what happens when people who played world of warcraft for twenty years start to date
Now that you've framed swipemaxing as cringey I feel more affinity with it, just a hair not by much tho. Lmao.
To be clear, it's not the numericalness or the economizing that bugs me. I'm down with that shit.

Photofeeler
I am honestly a complete fucking idiot, though what’s worse is that I don’t realize how much of a fucking idiot I am until I’ve already done the dumbest shit ever.
I uploaded a photo of myself on Photofeeler, I guess because I thought for a millisecond of my life that someone would actually think I’m attractive. Guess what fucking happened? Just as I predicted. You look dumb. You look ugly. The only thing I got a good score in was trustworthiness. Well yeah, it’s not hard to look like you don’t wanna kill anyone when you’re fat as hell and everyone would outrun you if you wanted to gut them like a pig. It doesn’t matter what angle or picture I take. I’m just fucking hideous and I’ll always be seen as fucking hideous by everyone else.
I know the bullshit “It doesn’t matter what other people think- it just matters how you feel about yourself!” Yeah that’s fucking great for the fucking naturally gifted who look goddamn stunning without trying. How are you supposed to feel good about yourself when the world continues to reaffirm just how fucking disgusting you appear? How are you supposed to just continuously keep picking yourself back up when you are confirmed to be fucking ugly? Why do you keep fighting if there’s nothing to fight for but more disdain for you?
So fucking stupid. So goddamn motherfucking stupid. When your entire ego is built on pretending all your bullies were lying just to make fun of you- why the fuck would you post something and be like “Oh yes I want your honest opinion on my looks!” I should’ve fucking remembered my parents always lie about how I look so they don’t have to clean up the blood after I blow my fucking brains out the back of my skull.
Speaking of which… my dad did put a gun downstairs a while back in case anyone broke into the house… just behind my bookcase. It’s probably loaded. I wouldn’t have to be terrified of dating or let alone making friends in Florida when we move if I kill myself before then.
That would be too messy. They’d never be able to move and they would be stuck with my miserable ghost and rotting corpse. I think I’ll make it cleaner than that. But my knives aren’t nearly sharp enough.
I just want to sit and cry in my closet but I can’t even do that.
Please I am begging one of you- take me out of this miserable fat fucking body. Take me off of this earth.
