Devil’s Tower Wyoming USA
The formation is composed of phonolite porphyry, a type of igneous rock, and was created through volcanic activity. The exact process of its formation is still debated, but it is widely believed that it was formed by the intrusion of magma into or between other rock formations and then cooled and solidified.

Vintage postcard of the Wolf Rock lighthouse, Cornwall
The fragile pencil of Wolf’s Rock tapering to a hostile sky, the empty miles of restless ocean...
in S.H. Burton, The coasts of Cornwall (Werner Laurie 1955)
Situated between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the Wolf Rock is a small plug of phonolitic lava formed during the early Cretaceous period. Fissures in the rock are said to produce a howling sound in gales, hence the name.
The current lighthouse is the fourth structure to have stood on the rock – the third was a conical marker of cast iron and concrete rubble, completed in 1848 and still visible on the jetty. Forty-one metres (135 ft) in height, the tower is constructed from 3296 tons of dovetailed granite blocks prepared at Penzance. It took eight years to build, from 1861 to 1869, due to the treacherous weather conditions that can occur between the mainland and the Isles.
In February 1948 Wolf Rock became the first ocean rock lighthouse to be resupplied by helicopter. Three keepers had been on duty in the lighthouse for 101 days (the normal shift was 60 days) and due to constant stormy weather were running seriously low on supplies.
The light, which can be seen from Land's End by day and night, has a range of 23 nautical miles and was automated in 1988.

https://www.britannica.com/science/nepheline-syenite
What is nepheline syenite used for?
Nepheline syenite from Canada is used to replace feldspar in the manufacture of ceramic and glass products. The feldspar in nepheline syenite may be cryptoperthite or, rarely, a mixture of albite and microcline. Nepheline is sometimes wholly or partly replaced by sodalite or cancrinite.
Is nepheline syenite toxic?
Acute Toxicity Values: No acute toxicity data is available for product. No ecotoxicity data is available. This product is not expected to present an environmental hazard. Waste Disposal Method: Nepheline Syenite is not classified as a hazardous waste under US EPA RCRA regulations.
Does nepheline have cleavage?
Resembles feldspars but nepheline is uniaxial, lacks good cleavage and twinning, and has a low birefringence. Nepheline is softer than quartz and differs in optic sign. Nepheline occurs in alkali-rich, silicon poor igneous rocks (nepeline syenite, foidite and phonolite).
Is nepheline a rock or mineral?
feldspathoid mineral
Nepheline is an important feldspathoid mineral. It is white, grey or yellow in colour with a vitreous lustre and a poor cleavage. The name Nepheline comes from the Greek word nephele, which means “cloud,” because it becomes strongly clouded when put in strong acid. Nepheline only forms in silica-poor rocks.

Volcanic rock, "clinkstone' (from the VDP website) = Phonolite. Superb open-knit aroma of red cherries and wood spices of cinnamon and clove. Judging by the nose alone this seems poised for superb bottle development. Bright, tight, juicy plate. the wine has an openness on the nose but shows its youth when tasted. Structured and destined to age beautifully. ****

Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA is a rare natural wonder with an intriguing and mysterious backstory. The tower's commanding and distinctive appearance, formation, and personality make it a fascinating sight to behold. Nestled amidst the Black Hills near the town of Sundance, the rock mass stands 1,267 feet tall above the Belle Fourche River, grasslands, and ponderosa pine forests. It was designated as our country's first national monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.
The origin of Devil's Tower has puzzled Native Americans and early explorers for many years. According to Native American legend, seven little girls were playing in the forest when they were pursued by giant bears. The girls prayed and jumped onto a boulder, which then started to grow and lifted them toward the sky. The rock eventually grew into the tower, with the cracks and columns on it attributed to the bears' failed attempts to climb it.
Devil's Tower is a popular destination for traditional rock climbers, with some columns featuring crevices up to 400 feet in length. Despite this, the tower holds immense cultural and spiritual significance to many Native American tribes, who still consider it a sacred site. To honor the tribes' cultural practices and rituals still performed there, climbing the monument is restricted during the month of June, which involves sun dances, vision quests, and prayer offerings that are significant parts of Devil's Tower's history.
Geologists have established that Devil's Tower was created by a volcano's cooling magma, resulting in the formation of distinct columns. The tower is unique in size and rock type, being composed of phonolite. These columns are among the tallest and widest found in this type of rock formation.

Roque de Agando
The island of La Gomera is covered in striking volcanic rock formations. La Gomera is one of the seven main islands of Spain’s Canary Islands. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean and were formed by the Canary hotspot, a mantle plume underlying the archipelago.
In the center of La Gomera, three impressive mountains called Los Roques rise above their surroundings. They are located within the Garajonay National Park which is a popular tourist destination. The Roque de Agando is the highest of these mountains and has a south face rising 220m above the ground. It was once a popular climbing spot, but since then the Roques became national monuments and climbing is now forbidden.
The Roques are so-called volcanic plugs. Volcanic plugs are a mass of solidified magma filling a volcanic pipe. The Roques are made of phonolite, a relatively uncommon volcanic rock type often associated with hotspot volcanism. Phonolite is a very hard type of rock and very resistant to erosion in comparison to the surrounding softer rocks. This effect has left these impressive mountains rising tall above the island.
