Then it hit you, the numbers clear as day. You weren’t sure what they belonged to, but you typed them desperately into the keypad, praying they were useful.

Bucky examined the building’s façade for a few minutes. It was possible the door to your apartment was unguarded, merely taped up for police evidence, but he didn’t want to risk being seen in the hallway by a cop or a nosey neighbor. So he slipped into the alley between the buildings and looked for the easiest way to climb up to your window.

Lucky for him, one window didn’t face the street. Glancing over his shoulder, he waited until there was a break in the foot traffic on the sidewalk before leaping, both hands reaching for the sill beneath yours. Another small jump and he was forcing himself through your window. It had been left unlocked, perhaps in your haste to leave that morning. Or maybe the cops had opened it to peer out into the alley in case you had thrown the money onto the adjacent roof or in a dumpster.

Sam had come through with a name, a contact of his in the Air Force being buddies with someone in the NYPD. Your name and address had been sufficient for Bucky. He was disconcerted that the police had found you so quickly. That you had walked in without a mask bothered him more than it clearly bothered the cops. Something wasn’t right, and he needed to know what.

The cops had taken your laptop and phone, confiscating any and all relevant electronics. Bucky still rummaged through your bedroom, carefully picking through the mess the police had left behind. There was a note beside the title indicating you needed to revise it for more specificity.

At the bottom drawer of your desk sat your bachelor’s in biology. It was simply framed and layered in dust, Stanford University emblazoned above your name on rich paper. Bucky glanced at it before shutting the drawer and continuing his search.

A strip of paper you had scribbled your schedule out on had been overlooked by the cops. According to it, your life consisted of the classes you taught and a weekly lunch with whom Bucky presumed was your only friend. From what he gathered, you lived alone and didn’t invite many people over. Your refrigerator was sparsely stocked, and there were no pictures except for one of an older woman he guessed was your mother.

You seemed to lead an otherwise normal life. He found a violin in the back of your closet and a duffel bag that looked similar to the one you had taken to the bank. It was full of used gym clothes and a racket at the bottom beside some worn racquetballs.

You had hobbies, at least, which was more than he could say.

Bucky felt stymied. Everything in his gut said that something was off, but he couldn’t determine what.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He answered immediately. “What is it, Sam?”

“You need to take a look at the video I just sent you.”

“I’m not at a computer.”

“Why don’t you have a smartphone?”

“Flip phones are easier.”

I was really excited about this crochet project.

But I've also got the diamond painting looming over my head.

I also have over fifty frames that need to be colored. I had to work half a shift today, in the middle of the day. We went out for coffee, but then it felt like there was no time for anything else. I really thought I was going to have time this weekend to do a couple lineworks and a bunch of coloring. Sure, I did a couple frames, and even tightened some pencil work for some more frames, but that didn't leave much time for coloring. Plus, give my blood line a few more generations and we'll just hibernate all winter.

It's faster, but it also feels like it's so much slower, to make pixel art in an actual art program. It's painful on my phone, which is what I've been using for the most part. It's possible, but it is just so hard. I'm thinking, I'll some them when they're filled and clean them up on my tablet, add shading and other details. This way, I can do as much as I've ever been able to on my phone, especially when we're out of the house, and I don't have to worry too much about what am I supposed to do in my phone besides be bored.

Aside, man I really can't express how much I wish my partner could fucking put his phone down for more than a minute. We went out for dinner and the server kept asking me about his alcoholic drink and his dinner like, no he didn't secretly order alcohol for me. No that shrimp meal is not mine; remember, I ordered the fish fry and not alcohol. Technically, even though I'm helping to pay for this meal, I am not actually paying. Plus, it'd help me feel like...... less ignored, so I wouldn't feel like I have to worry about how to keep myself entertained. I mean, I don't want to trade from the phone to him. I mean more, why do we leave the house if he's just going to be on the phone playing video games. He can play video games at the apartment. I've brought this up a million times. I don't think he listens. There's a lot of things that I saw that I'm pretty sure he doesn't listen to me.

Anyway, I just want to feel like using an art program is faster than using a cross-stitch program. My schedule for this coming week is kind of messy which is going to create an extra bit of stress. Like, we should have gone grocery shopping today, but he's not feeling good and we went out for coffee and worked through the middle of the day. I'm not going out grocery shopping by myself again because it just pisses me off. Maybe we could go grocery shopping tomorrow, but he has work. I've already decided that since he's working, I'm going to buy a couple sheets of foam core and mount these cork tiles behind my desk. I'm partially hoping they'll add some sound baffling, which we desperately need if we're going to continue taking calls in the same room. I might also buy some bubble wrap, both for the window because holy shit it gets cold in there sitting next to the fucking single pane window, and also as a lightweight hopefully extra layer of sound baffling on the curtain. The curtain actually does a solid bit of baffling. I like to push it aside on the weekends when I work in the office because I basically sit in it during the week and switching up my environment helps me feel like I'm not sitting at the same desk. My partner was in there talking to me after work and the sound environment was completely different without the curtain 😳

I'm not even sure where to put the diamond painting. My cats have taken to stalking things on the wall. My girl keeps attacking this board I've designated for pins, since I covered it with a sheet of paper that I couldn't think of anything else to do with. And I think it was just yesterday, she finally jumped to attack my other diamond painting. They hate having anything on the walls, but honestly, they'll have to get over it. With nothing on the walls, everything echos. It's so frustrating. Where the fuck am I supposed to put this huge, awesome diamond painting?!? What if I order like, cloth wall hangings?? They'll destroy them. I can't even hang my coat.

I'm just going to try to focus on coloring tomorrow. I'll get my foam core eventually.

If you have kids (or ever were one) you know that boredom can be a huge struggle. But it can also be a chance to get creative and find new things to do! When boredom hits in our house or when I have to occupy the kids while I work, I rely on some of the activities on this list.

I’ve tried to choose activities that will not only keep kids entertained, but also active and feeling purposeful. There’s plenty of ideas here that kids can do independently (an important value in our house).

To that end, most of the activities in this list require minimal parental involvement. I’ve noted the ones that call for a little more of a hands-on approach. We tend to save more involved or messy projects and games for family time when my husband and I can help out and be involved.

Outdoor Activities for Kids

I always try to prioritize outdoor activities first, both for myself and the kids. There are plenty of proven health benefits to getting outside, such as:

Not to mention it keeps the mess from said activities out of the house!

Usually it isn’t hard to convince the kids to head outdoors (especially since we upgraded the backyard equipment), but when needed we simply require that they start their day outside.

Things Kids Can Do Outside

Many of these are fun for the whole family but can also be done independently by older kids. We also sometimes use our adventure points system to reward positive use of outdoor time:

Family/sibling Nerf wars

Water balloons – we use sponges, not balloons, to avoid choking hazards and plastic waste

Build a fairy garden

Build a gnome house (a small scale log cabin for example)

Stargaze (look for constellations)

Practice survival skills – Like fishing, starting a fire, building a shelter, etc. (needs more parental involvement)

Take nature walks/hikes

Challenge older kids to set up an outdoor scavenger hunt or obstacle course (Kids get especially motivated if Mom/Dad have to take the challenge they created after work is done!)

Create a sidewalk chalk masterpiece

Blow bubbles (make your own with this recipe)

Climb trees

Make a slip and slide

Build a raft (and see if it will float)

Fly a kite

Set up a nature station with some binoculars and guide books – our kids love this one

In my experience, once the kids get outside, they don’t want to come back in! Sometimes they just need a little encouragement to get out there and start exploring.

Indoor Activities for Kids (Rainy Day, etc.)

When the weather is bad outside, the house can sometimes feel like a prison! Here are some ideas for busting boredom at home (and giving Mom and Dad some personal space) when kids are stuck inside:

When I have work to do but we are stuck indoors due to weather, etc. The key to self-directed activity days is to set clear expectations. Explain when you are available or not available, which activities are available or off-limits, how household responsibilities are divided, when tech time may or may not happen, and how the house should look at the end of the day/by a certain time.

Go Outside Anyway!

In many cultures, they go outside in any weather! With the proper gear, most outdoor activities are still possible and maybe even more fun.

We have these one-piece waterproof rain suits for our younger kids and these Swisswell waterproof jackets and trousers for the older kids.

Set Up Activity Stations

There’s a reason kindergarten classrooms have learning stations! It gives kids a variety of activities and the power to choose what they want to do first, next, and last. This can work for all school-aged kids (or older) though.

Set up different activities (they don’t need to be complicated) throughout the house or in corners of the living room so they can see all of the activities available to them. This is especially helpful for kids whose attention span may be on the shorter side. Some ideas include:

Homemade playdough (or store-bought)

Water play

Slime

Pipe cleaner challenge (have kids build something from pipe cleaners)

Dominoes

Watercolors

Moon sand

Discovery bowl (a bowl of rice with fun toys hiding inside)

Egg decorating (use toothpicks as paint brushes)

Toddler activity stations

Fingerpaint

We also keep a copy of kitchen science experiments around for indoor days. I love that it’s self-directed, full of science facts, and doesn’t call for special ingredients. I also notice my older kids are more than happy to supervise when there’s food involved!

Play or Make Board Games

Just getting board games out of the closet may be good enough to engage the kids. Setting out board games gives kids choices, which is always great.

If your kids aren’t thrilled about playing board games, maybe they will get more excited if they create the games themselves!

Grab some cardboard recycling for the game board and gather all of the random figurines and toys that have lost their home for game pieces.

Have your kids come up with rules and practice.

Set aside some family time for them to teach you how to play at the end of the day.

Let Kids Plan a Party

If you’re stuck at home, the days start to feel all the same. Mix it up by having an impromptu party!

Take a look at this website to see what “national day” it is (e.g., national spinach day) and create a party around that theme:

Have a birthday party for a stuffed animal or let the kids make up their own special day.

Find things around the house for decorations or order some online ahead of time.

Make some snacks and tea and invite all of the stuffed animals in the house.

Or, invite family members from far away via Skype or Facetime.

Very important disclaimer: I have the kids do all the work and then arrive at the party as a guest after I’ve finished my work.

Pull Out the (Emergency) Toys

Something I’ve been doing since my kids were little is keeping an “emergency” stash of games and toys hidden away. They often forget about them and it creates lots of excitement when Mom pulls out the “bored box.”

Here are some of the favorite toys and activities from over the years. I try to stick to low clutter, non-plastic items as much as possible, and buy from thrift shops and garage sales most of the time.

Bulk Legos

Buddha Board – A fun and relaxing way to paint with just water.

Rubix Cube – A good old-fashioned Rubix cube can keep kids busy for hours. Try creating a contest for who can solve it first.

Build Your Own Programmable Robot Kit – If you have STEM-oriented kiddos, this kit is a great investment.

Design Your Own Fairy Wand – This activity is great for encouraging creativity and imaginative play.

Microscope Kit – My kids love using this microscope to look at everything around the house and outside.

Bath Tub Crayons – These natural bathtub crayons are perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners (roughly 3-6 year olds).

Boogie Board – This reusable writing tablet encourages creativity and is mess-free!

Sun Art – This activity is one of my kids’ favorites and they can do it completely on their own.

Indoor Movement

When the weather is bad outside but your kids still have energy to expend, indoor movement activities are a lifesaver! Here are our favorite ways to get exercise inside without anyone getting hurt:

Dance parties

Obstacle courses (kid-designed)

Scavenger hunt

Tug of war (use a towel and have kids sit or kneel on the floor)

The “Floor is Lava” game !

Use masking tape to create indoor hopscotch or follow the leader

Spider web – tape some yarn to the walls of a hallway and challenge kids to climb through without touching the string

A door frame mounted gym like this one is our kids’ favorite Christmas gift of all time. They use it daily.

We have a trampoline in our house for cold or rainy days. It’s great for getting little ones’ energy out when they can’t go outside.

Indoor hammocks and yoga silks for sensory play and comfort (bonus: it helps develop their vestibular system)

Kids will often find their own ways to expend energy when stuck inside, but these activities can focus that energy so no one gets hurt or breaks anything!

Quiet Activities for Kids

At some point in the day, everyone gets tired and siblings often start fighting when they’re tired. To combat these feuds, I offer quiet activities that can be done alone, so everyone can rest and rejuvenate.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with just setting out simple arts and crafts materials and letting kids come up with their own projects!

Music!

We love music in my house so musical activities are always on the list of things to do. Here are some of our favorite ways to incorporate music into the day (and keep boredom away!).

Create a band – Grab a pocket strings guitar or another simple instrument like drums and make some music.

Turn on show tunes and have the kids act out what they’re singing.

Make musical instruments from the recycling bin and play them together.

Learn piano (more on that in the digital section) and practice with a keyboard.

Make wind chimes from a kit.

Make your own music box with this kit.

Music is a fun way to pass the time and is also a great skill to learn.

Entrepreneurship

Instead of just finding ways to keep kids entertained, you can encourage them to start a business! For kids that are seven to 13 years old, this book is a great place to start in inspiring them to start a business doing something they enjoy.

Set up a business incubator at home to encourage kids to think of their own charitable or for-profit venture like:

Doing odd jobs for neighbors or around the house

Pet sitting

Babysitting

Writing books

Selling products (bracelets, lemonade, baked goods, etc.)

Tutoring

T-shirt designing (use a printing service like Printful)

Starting an Etsy shop

For younger kids, you may need to be more involved in this activity (and maybe for older ones as well), but once they get going they will have a creative project they’ll be excited to work on alone.

Digital Kids’ Activities

I always prefer that the kids find something to do that is not using devices. At the same time, my own business is built on technology, so it’s also a world we want our kids to know how to navigate!

These fun activities use technology to teach new skills, which I think is a great use of screens!

Learn a Language

I chose Greek and Latin as my languages in school. They are really helpful in some ways (I can often figure out a word’s meaning by the root), but they aren’t that practical in everyday life.

So, I wanted my kids to learn more practical languages. We’ve chosen French and Spanish and I’m learning right along with them. We are using a free online tool called DuoLingo which makes learning languages a game. It can even be used on a phone or tablet, making it really easy to be consistent.

Learn to Speed Read

I learned to speed read in middle school. It has consistently been one of my most valuable skills in life, so I wanted to teach my kids to speed read too. This program called Spreeder un-teaches bad reading habits and retrains you to read quickly and efficiently.

I recommend the inexpensive premium version because it allows you to speed read almost anything, but there is a free version too.

Learn to Play the Piano

A friend told me about Hoffman Academy which is a resource for learning basic piano online for free. I wasn’t sure this would be as good as an in-person teacher, but so far I’m impressed. It’s really easy to follow along with and learn piano.

Of course, my house is often loud, but a keyboard with headphones helps during times when I need quiet.

Learn to Code

Coding is almost a necessity in our increasingly technological world. Many young people are learning it in their spare time or taking classes since computer science skills are quite valuable today.

Codecademy is a great place to get online instruction on how to code. It’s interesting and engaging for most kids. If your kids can read, they can start learning to code.

Learn to Cook

I think that kitchen skills are incredibly useful but many adults don’t have them. We decided to try a course for teaching kids to cook and we are hooked! It’s all online and teaches kids knife skills, how to follow a recipe, and more.

This activity does require an adult’s supervision but is a great investment of your time. Soon the kids will be making you dinner!

Rather than taking responsibility for solving my kids’ boredom, I try to encourage them to sit with the feeling and see what comes out of it. I find that instilling independence is the first step and once they are used to finding things to do on their own, they won’t be able to stop!

Still, it helps to keep this list in my Notes app for some fresh inspiration. Often the kids end up using their own creativity to come up with original ideas I never could have thought up!

The first part of this 3 part series looked at issues related to the vehicle, how to get to the Simpson Desert and a possible itinerary. The Simpson Desert 4WD trek is not one to be taken lightly and will often throw up a variety of challenges.

This article looks at what kind of gear you can bring and how you can prepare to avoid any serious problems that may come your way.

Challenge One – Water

The general recommendation for travel in this area is to carry 6 litres per person per day and this should be carried from home.

Don’t assume that you can fill up large water containers at outback towns or stations.

Each litre weighs about a kilogram so keep this in mind when working out where to store it.

There are many solutions to this from expensive purpose built water tanks to flexible bladders and the humble jerrycan.

Purpose built tanks can be mounted under some vehicles or thin poly tanks can be mounted in the back of utes or up against the cargo barrier in wagons.

Flexible bladders carry a surprising amount and can be stored in a variety of places in the vehicle, even on the floor in front of the back seats or between the back seats and cargo barrier.

Ten-litre casks of spring water, available from most supermarkets, are handy for drinking water as they can be discarded (in a responsible way) when empty to save space and weight.

The flexible casks can also be packed around other non-sharp or abrasive items.

Another great use for an empty water or wine cask is to partly inflate it and pack in your fridge and boxes/drawers as you start to use up supplies. This stops things bouncing around on rough terrain.

If you’re going to be super cautious and serious about one thing when you head up to the Simpson Desert, make sure it’s water.

Challenge Two – Food

You will need to be self-sufficient for the number of days you are in the desert. Basic supplies are available at Oodnadatta and Birdsville. These towns, plus Mt. Dare, have pub or roadhouse meals. On our next trip, our group have decided to have the evening meal out, when one is available, thus reducing the amount of food that needs to be carried. A more expensive choice for sure but hey, it’s a holiday.

Have enough extra food to keep you going in the event of bad weather or a breakdown where you may need to stay put for longer than you expected.

Dried and canned food is a good solution, and don’t forget a healthy supply of chocolate (for life-sustaining energy of course).

Even though it is good fun to cook on a fire or to use a camp oven, when wood is at a premium it’s better to keep what you can carry for a bit of warmth and ambience at night (and maybe roast the odd marshmallow).

Cooking is much easier with gas either with the traditional twin burner stove or the small “suitcase” cookers that run on butane canisters.

These cookers and the gas canisters are incredibly cheap, portable and work well for most general cooking. But, one word of warning – butane canisters don’t work well innear-freezingg conditions with the canisters needing to be warmed to work efficiently.

Challenge Three – Good health

Safety and well-being should be of paramount concern, after all, you want this trip to be memorable for all the right reasons. So:

Drink, drink, drink – water that is. Dehydration will not only cause problems such as constipation and headaches but can be life-threatening.

Carry a comprehensive first aid kit – not just band-aids but full bandages, anti-vomit and diarrhoea medications from the chemist, sting medication and antihistamines. A packet of cold and flu tablets and sore throat medication can also be handy. If in doubt about any of these, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Have a good supply of prescription medications – there are no chemist shops in this neck of the woods

Be aware of native animals – snakes and scorpions live in this area. They are generally more scared of you than you are of them. But don’t tempt fate by walking through the bush in shorts and bare feet. Be especially vigilant with children and explain the dangers to them, without scaring them to death.

Challenge Four – Having a warm bed

The desert is closed to visitors over the summer months due to the extreme weather conditions. Consequently, travel will be in the cooler months which can still bring quite warm days, but often very cold nights – zero or lower. There is nothing more certain to make for a miserable trip than an inability to sleep from being cold. To avoid this:

Have very warm bed clothing – thermals, tracksuit or similar

Have a sleeping bag or quilt that has a low-temperature rating

Use an old boy scout trick – have as many layers below you as you have on top. A large amount of the cold you feel in bed comes up from the ground

Wear a beanie and socks – a cold head and cold feet can make you feel cold all over.

If the night turns out to be warm, you can just use part of what you have.

Challenge Five – Having a warm campfire

Once in the desert, you are in either National or Conservation Parks. Picking up any wood is strictly forbidden so if a campfire is on the agenda you must bring the means with you. Some ways of achieving this are:

If space and weight allow, bring wood from home. If there are several vehicles in the group, get everyone to take what they can fit

Bring a small brazier or an old “superchef” type bbq (a metal bowl on 3 legs) and use heat beads or briquettes and small pieces of wood to produce a flame. A packet of fire starters is essential with this method.

Ecologs, or similar, can be purchased from hardware stores. These manufactured “logs” are compact and consistent in size making them easier to pack than normal cut wood

If travelling along the Oodnadatta Track, there are still thousands of old railway sleepers along the old Ghan rail line that can be used for firewood. If you have space, grab some.

Challenge Six – Communications

The Simpson is a very remote area. Even though many people undertake the crossing, being able to communicate in the case of an emergency is essential. There are only two sure ways of achieving this:

Satphone – these can be hired before you leave or you can use the great system provided by the Mt. Dare Hotel and Birdsville Information Centre. Pick up a phone at either of these places and drop it off at the other end. See the Mt Dare website for information.

HF Radio – most people will not have one of these unless you are seasoned outback travellers. These days a satphone is more reliable and you can make direct contact with the emergency service required. It also allows family and others to contact you if required.

In addition, a UHF radio is essential for contact between vehicles in your convoy and with others crossing the desert.

What else do you need?

Enough of the challenges, let’s finish with some miscellaneous items that you will need for a successful trip:

Desert Parks Pass – You must have this permit to cross the desert. At $125, it is not cheap but comes with copious information and maps. It lasts for 12 months and also provides access to other areas, such as the Innamincka Regional Reserve. Get your pass from the South Australian Department of Environment and Heritage, the RAA or at outlets at Oodnadatta, Mt Dare and Birdsville.

Sand flag – a long pole with a red flag on top so that your vehicle can be seen by oncoming vehicles when climbing dunes. This is essential to avoid head-on collisions and should be on at least the lead vehicle of a convoy. An old fishing rod, old radio antenna, children’s bike flag or bamboo garden stake attached to the roof rack or bull bar are simple solutions to this problem. On a previous trip, a pair of women’s red knickers made for an interesting flag

Fly nets – get some from Snowy’s. Cheap and if flies are around you will be very thankful.
