A single short inscription from Olympia records all that is known of Bybon. The son of a man named Phola, Bybon was apparently a weightlifter of remarkable capability who lived in ancient Greece during 6th century.

The inscription bearing his name was found on a block of granite with two deep notches carved out of it, forming a handle so that the stone could be used as a free weight; weighing approximately 143.5 kilograms (316 lb), the stone's carved inscription reads: ΒΥΒΟΝ ΤΕΤΕΡΕΙ ΧΕΡΙ ΥΠΕΡ ΚΕΦΑΛΑΣ ΥΠΕΡΕΒΑΛΕΤΟ ΟΦΟΛΑ - Bybon, son of Phola, has lifted me over [his] head with one hand.

As the sign under the fossil says, not every shell in the cliffs along the fossil coast are actually fossils, although some have certainly been there a good while, because they dug their way into the soft rock before the entire area got pushed back up above sealevel.

Pholadidea and the other genera in the family twist their shells back and forth to excavate tubular burrows in clay, peat or soft rock. Despite the hard work involved, the shells are actually quite fragile, and difficult to collect intact. Pholas dactylus, the common piddock, can not only manage the same trick in harder rock, but is also bioluminescent.

Common piddock (Pholas dactylus) shell half. 

Flat periwinkle (Littorina obtusata) shell - collected because it’s an unusual colour for this species. 

5 ceramic fragments:

2 solid blue pieces, 1 pale and 1 mid-blue. I find a lot of this sort of material varying between these shades of blue, but it’s rarely worn to a nice shape like these two. 

2 blue and white, possibly willow pattern.

1 warm grey with cool grey parallel lines on one side - this material/object is also quite common around the local beaches. 

151 glass fragments, including another stopper fragment, this time the ‘stem’ part (maybe it was part of the same one I found the top of last time), and a very large amber piece which might be my favourite find of the day were it not for the long dark green one on the right end of the 4th row down. Overall a very satisfying range of colours.
