Acknowledgment of indigenous art is good, appreciation of it is better, to take part in a movement to obtain a better quality of life for indigenous people is best.

When I go to a museum or an art exhibit I look at a piece of art as something beautiful made by someone in their spare time.

After I read Alice Guillermo’s literary work on Philippine contemporary aesthetics, I now realized that this way of looking at indigenous art was too superficial. That even in art, critical thinking should still be the primary or default way of looking at things.

As an artist myself, I know that art, whether it be visual, performing or literature, carries a part of its creator. It is now an extension of the artist’s heart, mind, and soul. This shows that art in itself is not just a pretty picture, a beautiful piece of music or a good novel; it is the expression of an array of emotions and beliefs combined together to give emphasis on something important.

The Philippines has been colonized for hundreds of years by many nations mostly from the west. To see something that was not rooted in the western idea of art deserves more recognition than what it gets. They were not just artists. They fought for their freedom, for our freedom, they sacrificed their lives just for the children of tomorrow to see another day.

Art is freedom. But art in the Philippines is still seen as a medium of expression for the wealthy. That is why only the ones who are in a ‘more comfortable level of life’ have the luxury of enjoying such great creations. These people tend to take art for granted. They do not see art more than what meets the eye.

To own a piece of art is good but to truly appreciate it is another story. I am in no way discrediting the efforts of museums and other individuals or institutions in preserving art for future generations. I would just want to point out that it is not enough.

We must pave the way for them.

To formally close my review of Alice Guillermo’s essay, let me use a part her work to better put into perspective my perception on Philippine contemporary art:

“It is not enough to patronize, collect and encourage fashions in indigenous art if one does not take part in the movement to obtain a better quality of life for them... “

Look what I found at the @altphilippines art show- mahjong!! It’s actually the work of the multidisciplinary artist @josephineturalba. She calls her artworks “Quorum” and “Todas”. Quorum refers to the furniture set which she created in collaboration with Lara Sarmiento and Thomas & George. If you scrutinize the details of the pieces, the painting on each side of the table cleverly depicts current Chinese relations with the Philippines and each of the four leather chairs has empty gold-dipped pieces, spent 38-caliber bullet shells. Todas is the term used to call out when you win the game. She created an artwork for each suit- balls, sticks, characters, flowers, wind and dragon. A total of 146 set on ivory colored hand tiles. She made only five editions for this show. Do visit the show this weekend! The space is huge! Ten galleries, 150 contemporary artists. It was indeed some enchanted evening at the opening of “Cellphies 2”, an exhibit of photographs taken with a cellphone camera on the streets of New York. The artist @jedbolipata, a Juilliard-graduate turned New York realtor, treated us with a mini piano concert and played his favorite broadway hits and even Beatles and Queen music, that got us singing the whole night. Also on exhibit is six of his short films. My favorite is “Lolo ni Lola” featuring his mom recounting the life of her grand uncle, Don Teodoro R. Yangco.
