There is a wide range of dental devices that Exeter Orthodontics offers to improve the appearance of the teeth. Patients have a choice between the fixed and removable devices to improve chewing and speech functions. Braces are the most common example of fixed devices.
Braces are composed of brackets, bands and wires made from stainless steel. Bands are fixed firmly on the teeth so that there will be an anchor for the appliance. The brackets are connected to the front teeth while wires that are shaped like an arch pass through the brackets and are fixed on the band. The orthodontist will tighten the arch wire to apply tension to the teeth and move them to a proper position.
For children, fixed space maintainers are used to stop two teeth at either side of the spaces to move until the permanent tooth comes out. A band will be fixed on one of the tooth next to the space with a wire going from the band to the other tooth. The maintainers can stop the child from thumb-sucking; however, the device is uncomfortable and can affect eating.
An option to the fixed devices is the aligner that is unnoticeable for most people. Aligners can be removed before eating or before cleaning the teeth. After 2 or 3 weeks of using the aligner, it will be changed to a tighter one. Aligners are better options for adults who do not want to be seen wearing braces. There are also no restrictions when to comes to food because the aligner can be easily be removed before eating.

First, it is important to always wear the aligners given to you. It is tempting to take it out because it is a removable device unlike traditional braces. If you want to eat without restrictions, you can remove the aligners but make sure to put it back in once you have cleaned your teeth after the meal. The problem usually arises in the tendency of the patient to put back the aligners once they are done eating. Keep in mind that in order for the treatment to show result at the fastest time, they should be worn at least 20 to 22 hours every day.
The next thing you have to know is that you must clean your aligners based on the instruction given to you by your Exeter Orthodontics. This is to avoid bacteria buildup, discoloration and bad odor from coming out of the Invisalign trays. Every morning, you must clean your teeth along with your trays properly. This process should be repeated before bedtime as well. Every time you remove the aligners, rinse it with water to remove plaque and dry saliva sticking.
Use toothpaste only when brushing your teeth but do not use it to clean the trays. This can lead to discoloration and could even damage your aligners as a result. You also want your aligners to remain spotlessly invisible therefore it is a no-no to use toothpaste which could create a dull sheen on your Invisalign trays. There are denture cleaner or even crystal cleaners intended for the aligners which can be usedsafely.

During dental school, he served as class president for three years, and received many awards and honors for his academic achievements.

Dr. Cohen’s aspiration to become an orthodontist stemmed from his own treatment when he was twelve years old. He pursued his goal by graduating from Rutgers College and then attended dental school at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey for four years. He then attended a two-year post-doctoral orthodontic program at Temple University’s School of Dentistry to receive his orthodontic certificate and a master’s degree in dentistry.
Along with his successful private practice, Dr. Cohen is part of the teaching faculty at Albert Einstein Medical Center’s Department of Dental Medicine, in Philadelphia. Dr. Cohen has been teaching residents how to become orthodontists for more than 20 years. He helped develop a “clear aligner” curriculum in which he teaches residents how to move teeth with Invisalign. With this knowledge, he has become and expert in treating minor and complex teenager and adult Invisalign patients. On a personal note, he and his wife have been married for over 27 years, and have two children. Dr. Cohen and his team have won Top Philadelphia Orthodontist each time there is a vote in both Philadelphia and New Jersey since 2009.
