Skink dynamic headcanons

Hasira and Waza:

So @spinnysocks headcanons these two are kinda like the Nne and Tano of the group. Best friends who see themselves as the most competent of the group lol. They’re very close with each other, so close they don’t even need to talk to each other sometimes cuz they know what the other is thinking. Like

“Want to catch some bugs?”

“You read my mind”

“Cool”

Also if one of them is having a bad day or if someone wrongs them, they’ll rant to the other and they’d be like “Such a jerk” or smth like Kiburi and Neema do hfhfgf

Njano and Nyororo:

I think Njano met Nyororo around the same time he met Shupavu, so they’re best friends. Although unlike with Shupavu, their friendship is strictly platonic. Whenever they’re together, Nyororo mostly enables Njano’s antics, which she finds amusing. Njano absolutely loves watching Nyororo use her tricks on someone, trying to hype everyone up even though they all know what’s about to happen. He even talks like a sports commentator afterwards like “And she’s done it again ladies and gentleskinks! Score one for Nyororo! And the crowd goes wild!”. Nobody cheers but at least it makes Nyororo laugh lol. Remember how I hc how Nyororo knows exactly what to say in any scenario? Never fails to amaze Njano

“Seriously, how does she do that?”

Shupavu and Hasira:

Although he was the last skink to agree Shupavu should be a leader when they all met, Hasira has grown to respect her and admits that she makes a great leader, even saying how she was born to be one. He’s even acted as sort of a mentor to her on a couple of occasions, giving her survival tips cuz he’s been through a lot of shit. Don’t think Shupavu doesn’t recognize his role as a babysitter cuz she’s absolutely grateful for that. She even thanks him for everything he’s done at one point, just to make sure he feels appreciated (Hasira actually smiled at that)

Nyororo and Hasira:

I feel like Hasira’s the only one not affected by Nyororo’s sweet talk jghfhf. Her manipulation tactic NEVER works on him and she doesn’t know why. She could understand if he was gay but he isn’t, he’s pan. Hasira’s secret is his experience lmao. He’s been through this shit before, he knows how it plays out. I feel like their dynamic is kinda like a tough, overprotective father and his pretty daughter (except they’re not actually related lol)

Njano and Nyeusi:

Nyeusi gets annoyed with Njano often, but they’re still good friends. They really balance each other out, with Nyeusi being the quiet, short-tempered who’s like a shadow and Njano being the colorful, happy one that does all the talking. Surprisingly, they work really well together, as Njano is able to tell what his friend is thinking.

Though Njano IS the most prone to forgetting stuff about Nyeusi, like the fact that he hates romance or that he’s even there in the first place lmao

Hasira and Nyeusi:

I’d say they’re good friends. They both bond over how annoying Njano can be (although unlike Hasira, Nyeusi actually likes him) and what kinds of things irk them.

I feel like Hasira sometimes talks about his own experiences with romantic partners and he finds himself getting a bit sentimental only to get interrupted by Nyeusi gagging or actually throwing up

Njano and Shupavu:

Oooh, what can I say for them that I haven’t already?

-Even though Njano fell first, Shupavu fell harder. He’s the light of her life and she doesn’t know what she would do without him

-They’ll defend each other no matter what. If anyone complains about Shupavu’s attitude, Njano would do nothing but talk about how awesome she is. When Kenge insults Njano and upsets him, Shupavu gives him a verbal beating

-Shupavu is usually the one to make Njano all flustered, but I like to think there was at least one time where Njano did or said something she considered attractive and she actually swooned (Njano has no clue)

Njano and Hasira:

Njano is Hasira’s LEAST favorite skink like he does not like him at ALL hghghg. He doesn’t think Njano takes his job (and life in general) very seriously with all his antics. Njano knows this and while he actually likes Hasira, he also loves annoying tf out of him out of spite, which only makes him seem more immature. They kind of have that Spongebob and Squidward dynamic, where there is a level of mutual care between the two of them but for it to come out of Hasira is uncommon

Njano and Nyata:

Oh those two share a brain cell fnfhhdhd. Their friendship is similar to that of Njano and Nyororo, except Nyata will actually join in on Njano’s antics and even has the same ideas as he does. Cue their “evil” laughter hffhhfd

Njano also made the best wingman when he found out about Nyata and Nyororo’s relationship, though he does make lighthearted jokes. Nyata doesn’t mind. She even encourages him like “I mean, where’s the lie?”

Shupavu and Nyeusi:

Based on a small scene in “The Rise of Scar”, it’s clear he’s one of the few animals that she really trusts. Not just because of his abilities, but also emotionally. He’s always there to listen whenever Shupavu wants to talk about something and has never once exposed her secrets bc he cares about her :)

Nyata and Nyororo:

Omg the girlfriends. I like to think their relationship was sort of “love at first sight” except neither of them knew it was mutual. After some pining and some encouragement from Shupavu and Njano, they decided to make it official. They tend to get super flirty with each other, trying to make the other as flustered as possible (Nyata always wins lol). Like Nyororo would hit on Nyata and Nyata would be like “What’s stopping you?~” and Nyororo surrenders.

Their friends find it adorable, others just yell at them to get a room 😭

Nyeusi and Waza:

Waza’s usually the one to calm Nyeusi down whenever he’s pissed off at something/someone, being the mediator and all. I like to think they also “train” together, meaning they put their skills to the test with each other. Nyeusi would do his best to hide somewhere and Waza would use his keen eye to try to find him. Waza always finds him :)

Nyeusi and Nyata:

Surprisingly, they did NOT like each other when they first met. Nyata would go out of her way just to piss Nyeusi off, which results in him hissing at her. But as time went on and after Nyeusi helped her escape getting eaten, the two developed a more sibling-like relationship. Nyata thinks it’s fun to annoy Nyeusi, but they’d let the world burn for each other

Njano and Waza:

Waza doesn’t mind Njano’s antics as much as the other boys so they’re pretty chill. He even keeps an open mind about it, saying how maybe Njano’s ideas won’t be so bad. They’ve worked before, right? Njano appreciates it

Though Njano still either gets told off or slapped by Waza whenever he’s bothering Hasira hfhfh. Njano gets back at him by calling out Waza’s inconvenience

The skink dynamic is what I like to call “hilariously functional”, meaning they’re by no means dysfunctional like the other Outlanders, but hilarity always ensues no matter how well they work together

Doctor Who Fic Recs

¡The specials are nigh upon us (or maybe the first one will already be out by the time I finish writing this, who knows)! Over the course of 60 years, there’s been quite a few absolute gems that some anonymous, talented souls have put out for our enjoyment. So here’s some of the highlights, scraped together from various corners of the internet:

This one is centered around Nine, after his regeneration. He has to confront his trauma as he goes on a journey through his past, traveling through his memories and meeting his past selves. It goes really deep into a lot of lore surrounding the daleks and Classic Who, so if you don’t know a lot about that this probably isn’t for you. It also came out before the 50th anniversary special, so there’s no War Doctor, and it has its own interpretation of the last moments of the Time War. But if that’s not a dealbreaker, definitely check this one out, because it’s got a fantastic story about regret and identity.

This story is a prequel to both series set on Gallifrey, with some rare Doctor/Master/Rani shipping, a very eldritch approach to Time Lord society, and a really interesting fusion of TARDISes with daemons. If you’re not familiar with the concept of daemons, this story really isn’t a good starting point, plus there are some references to the Big Finish audio stories that are rather important. It’s not exactly a story as much as it is a bunch of fragments set in the same universe exploring a lot of the ideas it introduces. A must-read if you enjoy Doctor Nyarlathotep.

A personal favorite of mine, centering around the unexpected pairing of Martha Jones and Lucy Saxon. It deals with the fallout of a certain couple of Time Lord’s actions during The Year That Never Was and is very short, but manages to squeeze in a lot of emotions. It will make you understand how this pairing could work while doing justice to Martha’s character.

Drop whatever it is you’re doing. Go read this. Now. It is one of the most well-written fics you will ever find, period, and probably the best Academy Era fanfic out there. The author has an excellent grasp on how an unlikely friendship would develop into something more and then break down, making it one of the most compelling and believable explorations of the Doctor and the Master’s relationship before they were the Doctor and the Master. It can get pretty dark (we’re talking self-inflicted regeneration) but if you can stomach those topics then you’ll find something amazingly well-written.

¿Do you wish that we could’ve seen tiny Amelia as a child companion on the TARDIS instead of her adult self? ¿Are you a fan of platonic fluff? ¿Are you in the mood to have your heart explode from a cuteness overload? ¡Then check this one out! The only possible complaint is that it’s too short.

Wherein Rose decides to haul around the dalek from Van Statten’s bunker instead of Adam. ¡Very funny and enjoyable and underrated! It has a dalek named Pedro and Nine being enjoyably grumpy until he decides he can make an exception against hating all daleks just this once. ¿What more could you possibly want?

This one is a short piece about Martha and Ten going to watch a supernova, but what makes it extra special is that it’s a real supernova and the fic was written by an irl astronomer. Their passion for their work really bleeds through into their writing, and it helps to emphasize the sense of wonder and exploration that Doctor Who at its best can bring.

¿Remember Jethro from Midnight? ¿The guy who looked like Merlin? ¿No? You will after reading this.

Mostly crack that doesn’t take itself too seriously and isn’t afraid to poke fun at some of the classic sci-fi setting fanfic cliches. ¡¡Number one shipper TARDIS, sex pollen, and Martha Jones having a good time abound (¿have you figured out which companion is my favorite yet?)!!

Obviously they couldn’t have done anything like that in the show itself without resorting to dubious CGI necromancy bullshit, but man does it make you wish they could’ve had something similar.

And last but not least, ¡some classic Donna and the Doctor friendship! This is pretty much the distilled essence of everything everyone loved about their dynamic, being sweet, silly, and sad. It leans more on emotions than action or humor, but with the upcoming specials it is well worth a read just to remind yourself of everything they went through.

There will be two size variations, 4x6in and 8x12in, and they will be priced as follows:

-For one print, 4x6 will be $5, 8x12 will be $10

-For three prints, 4x6 will be $10, 8x12 will be $20

-For the whole set, 4x6 will be $25, 8x12 will be $50

Ok thoughts 👏thoughts👏Everyone gather around I have thoughts about this!

Episode 2 was clearly the Pomni episode. We got to see her character get a little more fleshed out and we also got a glimpse of what motivates her which is great.

With this tweet we have solid confirmation on who the upcoming episodes will center on (thanks for not making us guess, Goose) and this lineup is really interesting.

First fascinating thing is that Kinger and Zooble share a spotlight in ep 3. Why is that? Everyone else gets their own dedicated episodes so why are they unique in that regard? What connects them?

Well, I have one idea!

So we know since the pilot that Kinger has been the one to have lived in the Circus the longest out of all of them. We’re still not sure if he was in fact the 1st human to be trapped (maybe we’ll find out in the next episode) but he definitely has the most seniority, both in age and in length of entrapment.

We also know that Zooble was the most recent character to get stuck before Pomni (and considering their attitude, it may have even been quite a while beforehand) AND is the youngest character next to Jax (they even share the same age, which could be a coincidence but it feels too deliberate of a choice).

Which means ep 2 will simultaneously focus on the oldest and the youngest of the characters.

I’m actually curious as to what their dynamic will be because they haven’t really interacted much in the pilot (and like not at all in episode 2), if they end up interacting in ep 3 at all. But mostly I’m excited to see them more fleshed out with hopefully Pomni getting the chance to bond with them (either together or separately).

My guess is that the purpose for them to share focus on an episode is to get perspective from someone who’s been there the longest and has seen more people come and go than anyone else vs. someone who was just recently in Pomni’s shoes and had probably a much different first day experience (we know Zooble cared enough about Kaufmo to personally organize his funeral so they may have some…feelings about who’s essentially his replacement).

Ep3 is also supposedly Gooseworx’s most anticipated episode so I’m extra excited.

Next we have Gangle for episode 4. I honestly don’t have a lot to say about her or the significance in her episode placement outside of her being the closest in age to Pomni (being only a year older). The only hint we get about what her episode will possibly consist of will be on how reliant she is on her ComedyMask to feel happy, which will be very interesting and we might even get some confirmation on whether her avatar was programmed with that feature upon entering the Circus or if it was an add on of sorts by Caine to help keep her sane. A pretty shitty feature if it can’t last for very long but it does make for a nice metaphor about how fragile her facade is (girl is literally masking).

Actually I don’t think her and Pomni have actually exchanged words yet in the show. Wouldn’t it be funny if they don’t up until her episode. Like Pomni is so caught up in between whatever mess episode 3 has in store for Kinger and Zooble that the two of them never actually talk and it just keeps getting more awkward. Gangle wants to talk to her but is so self-conscious about her Tragedy self that she’ll only feel safe to have a conversation if she has her mask, but it just keeps breaking before she even gets the chance.

Again this is all just speculation, if they actually end up talking in episode 3 I’ll…make ship art of them.

Anyway, episode 5. The one I’m personally waiting for because y’all should know what I’m about by now.

I swear to god if Pomni and Ragatha don’t have a fucking conversation before ep 5 I will launch myself into the sun. I’ll take anything, I just need them to get real for a second. I NEED to know the extent of this woman’s damage. It has to be explored, analyzed, and dissected and I will do so with gusto when the day comes. None of these characters will be safe from my scrutiny, but Ragatha oh ho ho, you have been living rent free in my head for too long, madame. You WILL pay your dues and I intend to collect in every episode until there is not corner of your unsound mind that I have not examined in great detail!

Ahem *Straightens tie* Ok back to business

So yeah, Ragatha.

It may be because we’ve only had 2 episodes but I can’t help but feel like we’re supposed to see Ragatha as a sort of deuteragonist since out of all of the supporting characters she’s so far been getting the most focus aside from Jax, and we’ll get to him in a minute (I promise that’s not just me being biased, or maybe it is, I don’t know, you tell me).

In just two episodes we’ve seen more of what makes her tick compared to anyone else. And of the main cast she’s been the ONLY one to make any kind of connection to the main character and have enough of a meaningful interaction with her to leave an impression.

But this is what really clinched her role as a deuteragonist for me, she’s so far been one of the few to have the narrative briefly shift to her perspective to give us significant character moments like these:

The show REALLY wants us to see just how NOT ok she is.

If she’s meant to be the heart of the group, her heart already can’t take much more damage. Her friendship (if you can call it that, it’s so painfully one sided right now) with Pomni clearly means a lot to her, so much so that her entire sense of self worth seems to be tied to it (and if you’ve been paying attention, she doesn’t have a lot of that as it is). It would be nice to see their connection gradually grow before her designated episode, where she might experience actual growth for herself.

And if episode 2 is any indication of how this show preserves friendships well…

Yeah, I don’t think she’s gonna make it.

In fact, I’m willing to bet actual money that she’s either gonna abstract in episode 5 or episode 6.

Which brings us to Jax’s episode! The other deuteragonist…tritagonist? He definitely shares some degree of significant narrative focus along with Pomni and Ragatha. He’s both an active antagonist force and one of the only characters to drive the plot forward every time he’s on screen (then there’s that weird thing where he keeps breaking the fourth wall).

He has so much significance in the story that Gooseworx gave him his own bullet point in her list of content warnings (this could also be a joke, but I mean it would be funny to see just how despicable they can make this character).

Gooseworx also described Jax and Pomni’s relationship in the show as “messy”. After episode 2, I don’t think she considers him as a candidate for any kind friendship like she did for the others, and who could blame her? In just two days the guy abandoned her to deal with an abstraction and chucked her out of a truck. He’s no one’s favorite person, and he relishes that. Bunnyboy definitely has some issues that Pomni would pick up on the more she’s forced to spend time with him. To the point where I can see her trying to eventually form some kind of bridge because, as her previously established character motivation implies, she’s not the kind of person to intentionally leave anyone high and dry. But unlike the rest of the crew, I don’t think Jax would be inclined to change for the better just because someone took pity on him. He seems like the kinda guy to dig his heels in and commit to his bad behavior out of spite.

And for his episode to come after Ragatha’s, why do I get the feeling the reason Gooseworx went so far as to preemptively apologize to bunnydoll shippers specifically is because he’s gonna cause something really really bad to happen to her (could be abstraction, could even be something much worse) that he would come to sorely regret.

And oh boy would that evoke some feelings in everyone!

I feel like if that is indeed the direction this show is going, the rest of the episodes will really be something.

I’m also certain Caine will get his own episode but right now he is very much an antagonist to these characters. I wouldn’t go so far as to call him a villain, but he’s certainly not someone Pomni is keen on sympathizing with, at least not currently.

A little time passed and Courtney's much happier spending her days at home, Oscar's been feeling better after some rest too, physically anyway-.. not so much mentally though. He's gotten a few jobs done to pay the bills, but he's frustrated he's not further along with the house yet. The bathroom is still disgusting, the heating's still fucked, and the twins don't even have their own room yet! She told him to quit worrying and suggested they work on the garden whilst they save some cash instead. The fresh air will do them good and it's mostly free as well. Robin's hugs make everything better too.. 🤗

the bittersweet between my teeth - final chapter

Tonight, she thinks, is the perfect night to let Ava know how glad she is to have her in her life. It’s something she’s wanted to do for a while now. To thank her, to tell her how important she is.

To tell her how she feels.

It’s scary, because she isn’t magically okay. Not every broken part of her is fixed, they may never be entirely. She thinks of kintsugi - the practice of repairing broken items with gold to make them more valuable even in destruction.

That’s what Ava is to her, she’s the gold that has helped Beatrice mend herself back together.

Some part of her likes to think she has been that for Ava too. They’ve been there for each other, built this little life together and Beatrice understands now that Ava isn’t going to leave her.

Ava isn’t going to send her away or decide she’s not good enough.

Ava has seen her at her absolute worst and never wavered.

So Beatrice wants to give Ava her best.

That comes in the form of a suit she wore once to Shannon’s graduation a few years ago.

It still fits her well, but Beatrice forgoes the tie and decides to leave a few buttons of the white shirt she wears underneath the jacket open. She wrestles for a few minutes with whether or not to put her hair up.

Then she remembers the way Ava looked at her the first time she let her hair down and the decision is made for her.

She fans it out just a bit, then pushes it to one side before looking at herself in the mirror.

Beatrice can't remember the last time she dressed up like this for anything. She put on an entirely new outfit for her first day on the dig in Spain, only to quickly realize that it was too warm for that weather and not at all useful for the physical parts of the job they did.

So this, knowing that dressing up won’t backfire, allows her to truly enjoy it.

When she steps out of her bedroom, Ava leaves the bathroom right across the hall at the exact same time.

At the sight of her, Beatrice’s heart quite literally skips a beat.
