*rubs little hobbit hands* Ok, for the love of seeing new WIPs, tell me more of "We/US/Ours"
I love the WIP Title tag game for those things 😁
IM SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!
tw: body horror, murder, misogyny, gore, that sort of horror vibe
We/Us/Ours is about a group of women that have been murdered, butchered, and sewn together into a Frankestein-esque type monster, and they have to solve their own murders and catch a serial killer with the help of a plucky journalist! It's told through we/us/ours pronouns, which is where I got the title.

Help me move into my new apartment
Hi everyone,
those who follow me might know I finally found a new apartment after looking for one for 1 1/2 years after my mother died unexpectedly.
Since I lived with my mother who lived off SSID and I was/still live on welfare since I was on the path to at least work a part-time job the current apartment became too big and too expensive, and most of all, welfare would have only pay for it until the end of the year.
Those who don't know me: Hi, I am Jess, almost 41, suffer from various chronic illnesses and am disabled. I write, even if the current stress barely let me write anything. I am from Germany, and even if there are some helpful systems, it is difficult to get them to work for you. Most of the time, they basically only exist on the paper to make the government look good.
Since the new apartment wanted me to move in earlier than I can get out of the rental agreement of the old one, I have to pay both for at least one month, two months if things don't work in my favor, and welfare will only cover the new apartment.
That means, I will need at least 791 Euro to cover the rent of the old apartment for one month. Not to speak of the new furniture I need, mostly new kitchen cabinets and a sofa, but I can work around this hopefully, since I can get a little money from the state.
Every Euro counts.
If you can help me somehow, that would be really awesome. I wouldn't put this up, if I would know any other way.

i think that 'quotable' as a descriptor here might mean different things to different people involved in the conversation! being selective about what you share (general 'you') seems to be typical, and i think that in a lot of ways that's in line with the conversation around 'quotable' excerpts, even if they're not the same thing as, like, 'i survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me'. obviously you would want to share the lines that you're proudest of. which is why i wonder how much of 'quotable tumblr writing' is just people doing the same thing, and 'anti-quotable tumblr writing' is recognizing on some level that it could discourage people to never see all of the, like, shitty transition sentences in between them
from the notes of that post it looks like a lot of ppl are talking about struggling 2 find bits of their writing to post as excerpts bc out of context a lot of it wouldn't make sense, so the lines they'll post are often going to be more dramatic n 'quotable' + that makes a lot of sense, too. i think it's worth noting that, like... posting excerpts + doing tag games that necessitate them are the norm but they're not, like, a requirement of writeblr or anything. + if the things that you do post don't make sense out of context, then they don't make sense. thoughts and conversations about narrative, character, structure, n parts of your process can also give people a glimpse into the sort of stories you like to write + who you are as a writer. you can still find a community here if you hold back a little bit, it's cool. the world is your fancy clam with the pearl inside.

Yeah it’s been…a period of time. Here’s a new scene in which Mara receives her first vision.
Tumblr media
Darkness surrounded her, draping around her shoulders. Bodiless hands punctured through and grabbed her with their charred fingers, digging deep into her skin. She was pulled down, down to a place she could not see, but she could feel the heat of it smothering her. Her cries lodged in her throat but her lips still formed the sound–a name, a plea.
The hands that clawed at her disappeared, save for one that crawled its way up her arm to give her fingers a tight squeeze. A pair of eyes blinked at her from the shadows. They were fathomless stones standing in a sea of red, their bleeding gaze the only color in an otherwise achromatic place. She stared into them, ignoring for a moment the hand that tightened its iron hold on hers. A scream began in her throat as a low rumble. The eyes blinked their consent, and at last, her words returned and she was set free.
“Hettie!”

I had to laugh at the "What was that about" remark because I had that moment today after I got inspired by some fire artists on Friday for some detail and it went into a direction I didn't expect which lead to a spontaneous addition of almost 2k that include new lore and a cute moment between the characters

January 26
Hello writerly friends!
I hope you are deep in your story and got a first grasp of what your story wants to be. Maybe it even surprised you, developed in a way you didn't expect.
Your most important trait as a writer is perseverance. You have to stick to it, you have to keep going, because you cannot discover your story if you don't write it. But there will come a point where you get stuck. Writer's block is extremely difficult for discovery writer, because we don't have an outline to guide us forward. We're stuck and we don't know where to go next.
Maybe you've already run into that kind of wall, so let's return to Patricia McLinn's book "Survival Kit For Writers" to find some advice about how to deal with writer's block as a discovery writer.
Patricia McLinn turns to brainstorming when she gets stuck. She advises to leave the actual story, but work inside the world you've created. Take your characters and ask them questions. Specific questions. This is not a friendly interview, grab your character and ask them "What the fuck was that about?" and then write down everything you'll find. Be demanding, make it an argument. Poke your subconscious until it spills the beans. These are not words that will end up in your story, but they will show you where your story is headed.
Another piece of advice you'll always hear around writer's block and its remedies, is to "refill the creative well". Meaning: reading and watching stories. McLinn specifies this more, she recommends that you read specific chunks of other books for inspiration. If you're stuck on a fight scene, find fight scenes in other books and analyse what you like and dislike about them.
That's also a general point regarding the books we read. What stands out to you? What do you find important in the stories you read? What speaks to you about a specific scene? I'm usually too lazy to write that down, but it probably makes sense to write those sort of findings down. Don't be lazy like me, be smarter.
As always, accountability and writing sprints are good tools that work well. Posting here on tumblr how you write and how it's going, may look like nothing important now, but you will look back on this one day and be amazed at what you did. It means something to say "look, I did that".
We have a check-in channel on our discord, where we post our wordcounts for accountability. It's just a little thing, but I look into the channel every day and it makes me so happy to see all those numbers. Someone follows this project on bluesky and posts daily (very impressive) wordcounts, and really tickles me to see that.
Our sprint bot died, so there aren't any sprints right now, but you can always use a focus app on your phone and set it to 20 minutes, or you can use a site like OhWrite (https://ohwrite.co/) to sprint with other people. These things work, honestly. I know it's annoying but these are like the easiest tools in the box and it would be stupid not to use them.
So in that spirit, let's see your accountability!

I started working on Talis Wants Some 'Shrooms again, so here's a recent snip from that:
As we explored the area around the Ayleid ruin, we found two more clusters of Clouded Funnel Cap. I showed her how to check the cap was good and then watched as she hesitantly sliced it's cap off. "Good work. We'll make an alchemist of you yet," I smiled. Cygwen's face pinched, doubt in her voice as she said, "Yes, Master." I gestured for us to continue, climbing over a boulder in order to reach a higher section of what was now becoming a rabbit trail. "Trust me, even if all you have is wortcraft, it might save your life or the life of a friend in battle. For example, these mushrooms we just picked, if properly prepared, can aid in learning or alleviate the effects of some curses. And there's a reason why mothers make their children drink bergamot tea - doing so really can help stave off an illness." It didn't take us long to fill the quota for Clouded Funnel Cap, prolific as it was in the area. The Tinder Polypore was a bit more tricky, requiring some climbing and gymnastics to get good samples. As we wandered, I pointed out some other plants – Milk Thistle and the odd, struggling, Lavender plant. "I realise it may go against your religion to pick these plants, but it still may be useful for you to know these things. In a pinch, crushed Milk Thistle seeds give off a small glow, and Lavender flowers can help certain 'uglification' curses." "I understand, Master. While it would be against my observances to consume these plants myself, there is nothing which states I could not do so for the benefit of others, such as saving a life."
Now for some complaining/ rubber ducking.
I started writing this in Oct 2020. Normally when I start a story, I have some idea, however nebulous, of how it's going to end. Unfortunately I don't often leave myself notes... So because this is so old, I'm not really sure where I was going with the story, and it's become very obvious now I've come back to it that I'm kind of waffling and I don't know what the point I was trying make with it was.
I should probably mark it as 'Abandoned' and move on, but at 4000, it's a solid chunk of wordage that also introduces Cygwen and Talis' Master, Ysbeth Embertame, so I'd like to post it. But also it feels odd posting without a solid ending. Maybe I should just skip ahead to when Talis has his 'shrooms and they're sampling his mushroom bread at the end...

Trick or Treat!
Here’s a treat! A blurb from my next novel, Dying on the First Date
Attracted by the blood, creatures encroach. They’re bulging shadows that dart out of sight the second my gaze lands on them. Each in varying size and shape, but all curious about me. Am I food? Am I a threat? Am I merely the newest, and oddest, decoration for their seemingly endless void?
The boldest amongst them floats closer still. It’s only when one gets within arms reach that I see it for what it really is. A fish. It’s a lake trout, specifically. Which baffles me because, wasn’t I in downtown Portland last night? What lake in Portland has trout?
Then it hits me. I’m at the bottom of a lake. That jackass told me he’d dispose of me in a lake. I didn’t think he’d have the balls to carry me around a park long enough to reach one, though. And while I’m having revelations, another one sucker punches me. This one sends me reeling. I’m at the bottom of a lake, and I haven’t felt the need to use my lungs once.

OC in Fifteen
Thanks so much for the (old!) tags, @indecentpause and @thegreatobsesso! You can see Darcey and Callie there if you'd like :) Filling this one out for Antonio West from Invisible Girl <3
Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!

“An accident—” he stuttered, “Most unfortunate—and unintentional—you mustn’t think—”
“What,” he said, “None of you have stomachs? None of you eat?”
“I swear I wasn’t trying to get you killed when I invited you in here,” Antonio said, “It really was to show you the music piece.”
“Say,” Antonio said, setting his glass down. “Can you eat oysters? They’d be alive—they wouldn’t disappear! Just think of it, you’re eating, and everyone can see an oyster slipping and sliding down your invisible throat and into your stomach.”
Antonio laughed again. “Say—” he said, his opening to something rather dumb, Velia was learning. “You’re a hoot. I wish more people were like you.”
“You’re not a thing,” he said sharply.
Antonio turned and looked at Velia. “Blaspheme aside, you’re looking very nice, Madam God.”
“Not when I’m president,” Antonio muttered, but let the point drop.
“Boys, you’re ruining my confession,” Antonio interrupted, still on the floor and making a pinched face as though his head was bothering him.
“How dare you, Velia. I am the picture of thoughtful.”
“Yes, that was rather evocative, wasn’t it. I know I have a pen somewhere—” he looked back and forth, noticed the state of his bedclothes and went back to his beet sandwich. “Ah well. The best art can’t be captured.”
“Sir, are you familiar with this metal pole? May I further acquaint you with it?”
“Sorry,” Antonio said, not sounding very sorry at all. “But, I’ve always operated under honesty is the best whatchamacallit and all that.”
“Can we go back to me criticizing you?” Antonio asked hopefully.
“Sandwiches!” Antonio cried when they arrived, and immediately stood to unwrap and announce like the commentator at a horse race.

How fantastic! I love hearing from people who have been writing for decades; it’s always inspiring.
(Soulmates, witches, and reincarnation sounds super cool tho 👀 younger you was valid)
7 please!
Hi incandescent-creativity,
I think you mean the ice-breaker asks? That means this ask
How does your most recent wip compare to the first one you ever made?
The first original story I ever wrote, when I was 15/16 was filled with bad sterotypes, zero research and had such a complicated plot with jumps through time, with soulmates, witches, reincarnation and I don't know what else thrown in. I barely used dialogue tags, and my descriptions, what often get praised today, were barely existent back then.
Now, 25 years later, I know how to structure a story, what stereotypes to avoid, how and where to research stuff, how to balance dialogue and description, write less show-y and tell more.
Yeah, the WIP I re-write now takes some liberties for the fun of the story when it comes to pirates and the Golden Age of pirates, hence it being historical fiction, but still I dived into the historical part of it.

I was tagged by @oh-no-another-idea here and I'm sure by a few others but I'm so scatterbrained these days that I've lost the posts 😭😭 So thanks to anyone else who has tagged me too!

My initial thought was to do this for Fay and then I was like naaahhhh that's too predictable but, uh, now I have Fay brainworms, so, yeah. Fay it is! These lines will come from AASOAF 1-3!
Tumblr media
“I will admit, I never like it when you appear.” She said with a frown as she peeled an orange, “It’s never for a good reason.”
“Careful now. The devil lurks closely and has sharp ears.” She warned before sitting down.
“FULL SAIL AND HAUL WIND, YOU BILGE SUCKERS!” I boomed across the decks to the rest of the crew.
“Come kiss me, you fool.” I commanded him.
“Get the fuck away from me.” I hissed.
“And you, come with me. You’ve wasted enough of my time. We’re doing this my way now.” She commanded as she walked past me.
“I survived.”
“You and me. You and me. Youandme, Youandme, Youandmeyouandmeyouandme…”
“I never forget anything…” I licked my lips. “My lord.”
“If I am all that is left no one can hurt me.” She whispered, clutching my tunic tighter.
“Don’t get cute.”
“I’ll kill the first man to put an oar into this sea.”
I let out a wry laugh. “My gods, you’re really delusional, aren’t you?”
Fay leaned over it and spread her hands eagerly over the map. “Shut your mouth now. The adults are talking.”
“If my pipe goes out, I’ll smoke that tobacco from your innards. Entrails are about the right size for it.”

Well, it is going better. I could write on 2 of three days so far. Themes are devolping well and got another layer of lies and secrets with a nice icing of "what the fuck went wrong back then and why the hell did they cover it up like that?" including some dead older sister for one of the main characters and revealing a new layer of the magic of the other main character. oh and we have the moment of "Fuck the gods" but none of the characters reached that part yet for real because they have yet to realize how much a single god instrumented the events of the last years.
I think this isn't so bad for the 4k I added
Tumblr media
January 22
Hello writerly friends, it's the midweek nag up!
How are we doing with the themes?
I'm jumping between several projects right now because I keep getting stuck. Because, and here comes the part where I smack myself on the head for predictability, every project is at a point of despair right now. The themes are "all is lost", hopelessness, and angst. Great, just great, fitting for the current weather at least, but how about a theme of happiness? Love maybe? Ever heard of love? Way to go me. This is how you not reach the weekly 2k wordcount.
As these post are basically accountability posts for me, I'm hereby declaring that I will return to the original fiction on Thursday. I've been avoiding it because, as I said, it's at a difficult point. The main theme is fear, I think, and the counterweight to that is desire for love. I have these two characters, desperate to be together and to be loved, and they're both held back by the wounds from their past (If this sounds familiar to people who know my fanfics, yeah, I'm stealing from myself, obviously). But I think I need to explore the other, smaller themes (see Sunday's post) more.
Ok, let's back to writing, how are you all faring this week?
