#thephdstudentchallenge Day 15 : Dairy So I don’t have a “dairy” per say, but I have two journals: one for quiet times with God where I write about the Bible scripture or book I am reading on and reflect on the word of God (the black moleskine journal), and another journal for my notes from church services, women’s midweeks and Devotionals (the cute animated Harry Potter journal ). Journaling has really helped me grow as a woman of God and as an academic. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 13 : Laptop/Computer My 4 years old MacBook Air has been very faithful to me. It got me through my masters and lots of online research, 3 different teaching positions, emergency virtual teaching from March to May, and now the first semester of my PhD. Sometimes it is worth spending a bit more for quality and durability. I’m definitely blessed that God allow me to have enough money to buy it prior to leaving for the UK for my masters. And for a year now, I have paired it with my hp monitor, and it has helped me not strain my eyes so much to the point my eye prescription got better. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 11 : Coding So before the day ends let talk about coding. In my field of research, I see coding more as how I get my research which is at archives and libraries. While this year most if not all of my research will be done online, national libraries have called my name frequently in the past. I can’t wait to be able to travel again and spend infinite weeks working at the Spanish National Library like I did back in 2017 when I was writing my master’s dissertation. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 10: Publication A bit late for day 10, but here it goes: Ever since receiving my marks for my master’s dissertation, I have had the goal of getting to publish my first paper (and of course my final PhD dissertation in a few years). Only being 3 points away from having a distinction mark in my dissertation broke my heart, but what was worst was that I could have gotten those 3 points if I had just focus more. I have learned from my errors. Now I know what my weaknesses are, and where I need to grow on in my writing. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 9 : PhD/Work Related Today is just a regular new normal day. Under non-COVID circumstances, I probably would have been at the library or somewhere quiet at uni. However, because of our new normal this semester, I am at home using my room as a library-coffee shop-university where I do all my studying. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 8 : Desk Set-up My desk. My new home for the next few months. I don’t think I have ever spend as much time as I’m spending now using my desk. It usually was a place that collected dust and gave me allergies. Now, it has become in my new best friend. I have everything I will need at arms length: All the electronics, all my planning pads, the best wheeled organizer from @michaelsstores in gold rose, a new monitor stand with drawers decorated with marbled rose gold contact paper, and all of the pens, markers, and notebooks I will ever need! #thephdstudentchallenge Day 7 : #Planning Know how I didn’t do much planning during my Masters, I know for sure I have to do TONS of planning for my PhD. I use my @myclasstracker planner, @evernote app penultimate to keep my asynchronous lecture notes, the app PDF Expert for annotating articles, my @kikki.k planning pad, and my whiteboard to keep myself organized and aware of all of my deadlines. I also have alarms on my google hub and my iPhone to keep me on my toes about timing. #thephdstudentchallenge Day 5 : Wellness I take my spiritual and mental health very seriously. As someone who struggled with depression for many years and was later diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, finding my “me” place/time is important. I have two specific things that keep me healthy: ⛪️ My relationship with God/Quiet Time with God - Having a close relationship with God has given me peace and security. I don’t stress over the future every second of every day like I used to, and I can be at peace knowing that God has plans to prosper me and not to harm me, and to give me hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11) 🏰 Disney - My happy place where I enter a place where I don’t worry about anything but how many rides can I go on in a few hours before it rains, or how many pictures I can take.
