Her forces are scattered. Mara can only pull the curtains of one reality, guiding her Queensguard with a spotlight. They glide across the stage as they press forth through the battlefield, &. she desperately holds a paracausal rope as the Ascendant Sceptre draws her life force for power. Everything is going exactly to plan.

Until it isn't.

- ❝ I'm afraid not. ❞ Her Lieutenant Colonel speaks over comms—Mienj, who she demanded stay off field, currently on field. ❝ Crow &. I can't find a way to break down the resonance shield. You'll have to cross the Ascendant Plane, no exceptions. ❞

Mara threatens a roll of her eyes, not to show irritation at the situation, but rather mere disappointment. She doesn't know why she's disappointed. Maybe because this goes against what she's wished for the operation. Nonetheless, she will work with this, &. the Guardians will work with her.

The queen clears her throat,

ᴍ ——— ❝ Luminary, ❞ she knows she isn't allowed to use this title, but she does anyway. ❝ The Pyramids will not lie in wait, our time is of the utmost importance. ❞

There isn't a way to put this lighter.

❝ If we allow the Witness any extra benefit, we run the risk of losing this war. I cannot withdraw you now, but I can grant you balefires to aid in traversal of the Ascendant Plane. ❞ &. if they lose, thousands die in it's wake. They are a powder keg about to explode, sparks flail as they try to outrun the fuse. Tick, tock, tick, tock.

There are only so many places the Queensguard can be, &. right now, the EDZ needs it the most. She can't risk losing more innocents, &. neither can the Vanguard.

This is her civil duty—the one thing Mara Sov can strive to accomplish to win back a public opinion.

She contemplates whether it would be wise to regroup troops &. rearrange the plan of attack, but it's cut short at the voice of her former brother &. Corsair.

𓅨 ᴄ ——— ❝ If Amanda's in there, I can't abandon my post. ❞ Crow snaps. Seems the two were discussing their strategy without her, whether it would be wise to retrieve Gale.

Mara debates intercepting, but decides to divert the conversation on her own terms.

ᴍ ——— ❝ The Lieutenant Colonel will enter the Ascendant Plane. ❞ She tastes the sourness on her tongue, a resentment from all three on the line ( minus Steve &. Miush ). She feigns ignorance. ❝ Mienj, assist the Luminary into the Pyramid. Crow, stay safe on your patrols. ❞

She feels how Crow dismisses her command—her suggestion—&. she feels Mienj recoil at the use of her surname. She loathes this connection.

Mara grits her teeth as she buys time for Pex, ❝ Tell me what you feel, Saunders. ❞

The situation on Neomuna was readily in hand at this point- Calus was getting pushback, and...yes, Rohan was gone, but there were more Guardians arriving to fill the gaps left by him (manpower-wise, at least). Gale was told to take time off- his inability to use this new power was finally acknowledged by Osiris. He couldn't just do nothing, as much as he'd love to- it was his duty both as Seraphim and Guardian to do all he could to defend humanity. So, to the EDZ he went. To the Farm, to the effort to protect the people on Earth.

To Mara Sov.

He was able to keep his feelings in check, of course, he was a professional. Having other familiar faces around helped. Devrim was a welcome sight, they hadn't seen each other in ages- Gale mostly ignored the briefing from Mara, he would get Steve to explain it on the way.

The Shadow Legion were easily felled, of course- Arc and Strand in tandem from a Young Wolf of all people was a hell of a thing, not to mention his own Solar, and the unique way Miush handled the Light and Dark in tandem. They cleared the area, then over comms, someone- The Crow?- mentioned that there was no way in. That was where Mara came in, apparently.

Miush was the one to pull out the Sceptre. They handled it as if they had been using it their whole life. They hesitated, while Steve jumped in with little concern. Something felt wrong. Miush looked over at him, waiting for him to go in before they did. Something felt wrong. He knew now wasn't the time for hesitation, but he couldn't shake it- something was about to change, drastically. A query over comms got him to finally take the plunge.

It felt awful. He couldn't even take a step forward. Steve had already cleared out half the Taken at the start of their trek, and Miush just moved forward, but he was stuck to the ground. He took a couple grounding breaths, then finally opened up his own mic. Steve and Miush had been chatting the whole time (Miush somewhat reluctantly, as Mara was on the line), but he'd stayed silent.

"Are you sure there are no alternative paths?"

His voice only trembled a bit as he managed to mask how desperate his plea was.

Of course.

Of course she should have suspected something would, at the very least, not turn out alright. From the moment she stepped into her office &. locked that door, Pex had the nagging feeling that she wasn’t getting a break.

The Hunter Vanguard glances around at the whisper, locking eyes onto the vent where two beady eyes meet her. She takes a deep breath in preparation to order the intruder out, but promptly stops when it’s the Young Wolf who exits instead.

Curses. Dammit. Why’d she have to feel this way now ? Why is it so difficult to get things done with him around ?

#♡ ———｡- ; ❝ Cayde, ❞ Mienj’s brows furrow as she rumbles, the only other sound occupying the room being the sound of her pen clicking against the desk &. the fan overhead. ❝ I shouldn’t have to remind you that my office is closed today. ❞

She pries the pen underneath the Exo’s hand that leans him against the desk, flicking it back violently as she proceeds to point to the door. ❝ I don’t have time for this. Not after Ana’s discoveries with Rasputin. Door’s there. Now scram. ❞

But when Cayde doesn’t budge, all the Vanguard can do is sigh &. cover her face with her glove printed in hearts.

❝ … what did you have in mind ? ❞ Hopefully whatever they do is just a simple in &. out. Though, she knows this isn’t possible. Pex grits her teeth at the thought, entertaining the idea of telling on her inferior to Commander Zavala.

She won’t. If it were anybody else, she would. But this one Guardian … he reminded her so much of Andal. &. something about him was– …

“Closed?” Cayde parrots back, tilting his head to the side a little, acting oblivious. Because of course absolutely no one told him earlier today, no siree! “Ahw, c’mon, Pex! Not even a liiiittle time for me?”

He lifts his hand up for just a moment when the pen is pulled from underneath, and he musters the saddest look he can when she gestures towards the door. Who could ever kick him out? Cayde is just too fun and loveable for that, which is only proven when the Hunter Vanguard relents. Internally, the Exo does a little first pump, but Cayde does his very best to remain calm and composed on the outside.

If he doesn’t, she can still very easily change her mind and kick him out.

“Well, ramen break is always a good call.” Code for: I have no idea, I didn’t think this far ahead. But it is speedy! ...Unless they get distracted, but that surely won’t happen, Cayde-6 has never been a distraction or a terrible influence ever in his life. No one can prove otherwise.

Cayde takes a few steps closer to her, now that he knows she won’t plant a dagger in his chest for intruding and interrupting her work. “You know you wanna~ How long have you been writing for today, anyway? How’s your hand not cramping?” Paperwork. The Gunslinger would be caught dead before he filed a single piece, for the Vanguard or otherwise, because doing paperwork would be to turn your back on any sort of fun ever. Guardians weren’t outfitted with fancy, cool sparks and matches so they could formalise and organise work!

“It’ll be quick!” Cayde winks. “Promise.”

its been a bit of a common theme of cayde being really confused throughout the entirety of the au so i feel almost reluctant to say hes like ?????? HUH at mara still being alive but he is ,, but not without being snarky about it

just because mostly everyone was convinced mara was kablootsky💥 its shocking at first whereas in the normal timeline pex is just like “oh okay we’re doing this now” and bowing immediately when contacting the queen through the oracle -- of course cayde DOESNT do that and his first instinct is to make joke about mara being alive

and mara absolutely does not approve of this lol ! its a bitter back and forth from there on out when the queen admits that her plan with uldren wasnt supposed to end in one of ‘her’ lightbearers demise. which rightfully pisses cayde off ! honestly im a big fan of the MCs of destiny being enemies of everyone so thats the gist of the au !

the only people cayde really gets along with are his friends in the tower but he still has friendly fun with those he doesnt really like ! its just who he is :]
