“In the backwoods of nature’s soul I left my wild true heart.”-Angie Weiland Crosby Environmental architect and renowned sculptor of saplings artist #PeterDougherty (go checkout his book #Stickwork ) has chosen the great lawn on the grounds of my old boarding school for his latest installation; the structures are actually in front of my old dorm, Palmyra. The installation is a whimsical wonder to behold. It’s five massive castles that you can weave your way through—room by room. The other pics are a few of my favorites from campus—the library has the clock tower♥️. Mr. Spinoza, the librarian when I attended, was an imposing man that may have been partial to an afternoon snooze amongst the stacks on the second floor. He was always a kind man, had a most excellent story to impart on any given day, and had sweet treats for us at the ready. The school dates back to the 1800s. In 1887, Samuel and Mary Patterson bequeathed 1500 beautiful acres, running from the top of Ripshin Mountain down to the confluence of Buffalo Creek and the Yadkin River, to the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina for the purposes of an agricultural and industrial school for the ‘fine minds of mountain boys.’ That school was called The Patterson School until 2009. It is a place chock full of splendid memories, as I can personally attest. In the 1970s, the school became co-ed with a concentration on hosting international students and offering changed to a college prep concentration. The school is now a historic education site housing the Western Carolina Sculpture Center and a working incubator farm that offers many engaging opportunities to escape to a hidden gem of a place. Yo! MTV Raps debuted on MTV August 6, 1988. These guys brought something to MTV that they couldn’t buy or manufacture. MTV was ONLY on for many of us when this show was airing. Still scratching my head why MTV cancelled it.
I chose this pic because it’s not a stage photo. It’s not a photoshoot. It’s not a promo pic, It’s just two friends having a good time. That organic bond is what made Yo! MTV Raps special.
