Did Spider-Man being married make finding big name writers hard (SPOILERS: no...)
One of the frequent arguments used against the Spider-Marriage was that it allegedly made high caliber writers unwilling to work on the series and/or made filling the role of writer difficult to do.
In particular Roger Stern’s unwillingness to work on the series due to Spider-Man being married and Ed Brubaker’s public frustration with how the marriage prevented him from writing a story he had in mind is cited to corroborate the above argument.
But let’s deconstruct that idea a little bit shall we.
Prior to the marriage’s introduction in 1987 there had been a total of four Spider-Man titles. Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Team Up, Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man, which had replaced the cancelled MTU series. So for 25 years (Spider-Man was created in 1962) there was between 1-3 titles per month, 1-3 writing positions that needed to be filled.
And who filled these roles? Well a lot of people and I’m not going to list them all but broadly speaking (and prioritizing people with actual runs not fill in works or who only did side projects of annuals) we had:
Stan Lee
Steve Ditko
Gerry Conway
Roy Thomas
Bill Mantlo
Al Milgrom
Tom DeFalco
Roger Stern
Denny O’Neil
Marv Wolfman
Peter David
David Michelinie
Louise Simonson
Danny Fingeroth
Len Wein
Christopher Priest/Jim Owsley
That’s a lot of people and some HUGE names there. Of course some of those names got huge later on or else got huge ON their Spider-Man runs.
What was the state of affairs during 1987-2007, during the years the marriage was around?
Well if I recall correctly among the titles published in which the 616 married Peter Parker had an at least semi-recurring starring role we had ASM, Spec, Web, No Adjective Spider-Man (later rebranded Peter Parker: Spider-Man), Spider-Man Unlimited Volume 1 and 3, Spider-Man Team-Up, Marvel Team Up Volume 2, Marvel Team-Up volume 3, Spider-Man Family, Sensational Spider-Man, Marvel Knights: Spider-Man (later rebranded as Sensational volume 2), Webspinner’s: Tales of Spider-Man, Spider-Man’s: Tangled Web, New Avengers, and Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
Bear in mind this is excluding guest appearances, one shots, mini-series, annuals, What ifs, alternate universe appearances or flashback titles like Untold Tales of Spider-Man.
As you can see that is far MORE titles than in the 25 years preceding it. Now in the interests of fairness obviously those were not all published at the same time and some of those titles were anthologies wherein stories might not be set in the present day where Spider-Man was married...but most were.
In fact at any given time during the 20 years the marriage was in place there was always a minimum of 3 titles in publication and on some months in the 90s there could be as many as 5-7.
That is a lot of writing roles that need to be filled and on occasion writers would handle the chores on multiple books. But that was not the norm the majority of the time each book would have their own individual writer.
There was never ever an instance where there was a gap in the schedule that couldn’t be filled because there was just no writer available willing to work with the marriage, that just plain never happened.
Moreover looking at the glut of titles during those 20 years Marvel apparently felt confident enough that there WOULD be writers willing to work with a married Spider-Man because they drastically increased the amount of space about a married Spider-Man that needed to be filled. In particular there were multiple anthology books during those 20 years meaning there would be even more space per book that needed to be filled.
But hey, that just tells us they found writers willing to plug those gaps. It doesn’t address the criticism that the marriage was turning away writers of high pedigree.
After all the unmarried Spider-Man had all those names I listed above work on his titles and after OMD he had the likes of Dan Slott, Mark Waid, Joe Kelly, Marc Guggenheim, Christos Gage, Chip Zdarksy and the guys from Jimmy Kimmel and Agent Carter!
Was the pedigree of writers during the marriage anywhere close to those guys?
Well we did have...
J.M. DeMatteis who during the marriage authored 3 all time classic Spider-Man stories, had an iconic Batman story and an iconic run on Justice League International that forever defined Blue Beetle and Booster Gold and continues to be influential to this day
Todd McFarlane co-creator of Venom, creator of Spawn, a founder of Image comics and the guy responsible for the highest selling Spider-Man comic book of all time
Acclaimed Playwright, showrunner of Riverdale and powerful editor of Archie comics Roberto Aguirre Sacasa
Gerry Conway, Co-creator of Firestorm, Killer Frost, regarded as the Goeff Johns of his day and oh yeah the guy who killed Gwen Stacy
David Michelinie co-author of the greatest Iron Man run of all time, co-creator of Scott Lang and Taskmaster and co-creator of Carnage and the most popular Spider-Man villain of all time, Venom
Tom DeFalco, editor-in-chief of Marvel and one of the two people who helped introduce Spider-Man’s iconic black costume.
Mark Millar co-creator of the Ultimate Marvel Universe specifically the Ultimates who became a major influence on the 2012 Avengers movie and MCU, such as the decision to cast Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Paul Jenkins, generally speaking acclaimed writer in particular on his work on Hellblazer/Constantine
President of Entertainment for Black Entertainment Television (BET) Reginald Hudlin
Acclaimed novel and comic book writer and author of the greatest run of the Incredible Hulk of all time, Peter David
Acclaimed science fiction writer and creator of Babylon 5 J. Michael Straczynski
Oh and by the way, among the people who did small projects or fill-ins were:
Ann Nocenti, acclaimed X-Men and Daredevil writer.
Roger Stern acclaimed Marvel writer, author of what many regard as THE greatest Doctor Doom story of all time and one of the greatest Spider-Man runs of all time where he created the Hobgoblin.
Acclaimed (for some reason beyond me) author and co-creator of The Boys Garth Ennis.
Once upon a time acclaimed and former Geek God Kevin Smith who was poised to be the main writer of Amazing Spider-Man once upon a time.
But that’s not all because want to know who ALMOST wrote for a married Spider-Man?
Acclaimed comic book writer on countless works and (for some reason) fan favourite Grant Morrisson, credited as authoring one of the best Batman runs and Superman stories of all time along with THE best Justice League run of all time.
But he isn’t even the biggest name who almost wrote Spider-Man. Because in the mid-1990s the then editors almost convinced a very big name creator to return to working on Spider-Man. Unfortunately he was turned off of the job when he saw Untold Tales of Spider-Man, a series about a teenage single Peter Parker.
His name is Steve Ditko.
You might remember his work as the creator of the Question, the second Blue Beetle, Doctor Strange and THE CO-CREATOR OF SPIDER-MAN HIMSELF!
Now I’m not saying every one of those marriage era writers did great jobs. I’m not even saying they were all necessarily great writers.
However all of them had a lot of prestige to them and either support from fan adoration or critical acclaim.
And most of them probably could’ve turned the job of writing a married Spider-Man down if they wanted.
J. Michael Straczynski in particular did not need the job and had more than enough credibility to pick many of his projects.
He is without a shadow of a doubt the single most high profile writer to ever write for Spider-Man exempting Stan Lee himself.
And he not only accepted the job of writing a married adult Spider-Man he actively embraced both facts of the character’s existence.
As did the author of the greatest Hulk run of all time, the co-author of the greatest Iron Man run of all time and the author of maybe the greatest Spider-Man story of all time.
So...it seems that being married didn’t make it particularly difficult to attract high profile ones.
But please, tell me again how Spider-Man being married was bad because we were turning away big name writers like the guy primarily known for resurrecting a long dead character, killing and resurrecting the hero and replacing the hero because screw originality I guess
P.S. Wanna know another big name writer who didn’t agree with making Spider-Man unmarried?
This guy...

In July 2019, Peter John Dalglish, former United Nations chief and top UN founder of UNICEF, was arrested in 2019 on child rape charges in Nepal. During his arrest two young children were rescued from his custody.
Dalglish was sentenced to nine years for abusing a 12-year-old boy, and seven years jail for molesting another 14-year-old.
Dalglish was a well-respected humanitarian, involved in projects across the globe. In 2016, he was awarded the Order of Canada - the country's second-highest civilian honour - for his work with disadvantaged children.
He co-founded Street Kids International in the 1980s, which later merged with *Save the Children*.
Who here heard about this in the main stream media last year?? Anyone? No? I didn’t think so. #SaveOurChildren #PedoGate #ThisIsWar #Fight ⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️⚔️

While I'm shouting opinions into the void, I may as well include last year's tierlist. S+: The Final Architecture (Adrian Tchaikovsky), To Sleep in a Sea of Stars (Christopher Paolini), Infinite Jest (David Foster Wallace) S: Fractal Noise (Christopher Paolini), A Green Desire (Anton Myrer), The Doors of Eden (Adrian Tchaikovsky) S-: The Murderbot Diaries (Martha Wells), Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton), Babel (R.F. Kuang) A+: Empyrean (Rebecca Yarros), The Lost World (Michael Crichton), The Torqued Man (Peter Mann), Neuromancer (William Gibbons) A: The Craft Sequence (Max Gladstone), Blitz (Daniel O'Malley), The Mountain in the Sea (Ray Nayler), New Spring (Robert Jordan) A-: The Keepers Trilogy (David Dalglish), Sphere (Michael Crichton), Robot Visions (Isaac Asimov) B+: The Poppy War (R.F. Kuang), One Flew Over the Cockuoo's Nest (Ken Kesey), Nightfall (Isaac Asimov) B: Children of Memory (Adrian Tchaikovsky), Timeline (Michael Crichton) B-: The Inheritance Trilogy (N.K. Jemisin), The Every (David Eggers), Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir), Antkind (Charlie Kaufman) C: Bring Me the Head of Quentin Tarantino (Julián Herbert), The Stars Now Unclaimed (Drew Williams) D: The Arabian Nights (translated by Sir Richard F. Burton)
We're halfway through the year, so hey, may as well post a mid-year update on my book tierlist :v S+: The Kingkiller Chronicle (Patrick Rothfuss) S: S-: The Green Bone Saga (Fonda Lee), Shadows of the Short Days (Alexander Dan Viljálmsson) A+: Sun Eater (Christopher Ruocchio) A: Good Omens (Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett), Ascension (Nicholas Binge), City of Bones (Martha Wells) A-: The Jewel of Seven Stars (Bram Stoker) B+: Imperial Radch (Ann Leckie), Dracula (Bram Stoker) B: The Complete Tales and Poems of (Edgar Allen Poe), Dracula's Guest & Other Stories (Bram Stoker) B-: State of Fear (Michael Crichton) C+: The Grace of Kings (Ken Liu) C: The Lair of the White Worm (Bram Stoker) Series detail under the cut
The Kingkiller Chronicle: I first read The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear back in 2021, and it was completely unsurprising they both made S+ on a reread (my only rereads so far this year). This was my first time reading The Slow Regard of Silent Things, which made S, and The Narrow Road Between Desires, which made S-, both pleasant surprises; I expected to enjoy them, but not quite that much since they were under two hours of reading each. The Green Bone Saga: All three books made S-. Jade Legacy in particular was a standout, given how structurally different it is to the other two, but along with Jade City and Jade War they were all greatly enjoyable in the same way. Sun Eater: The first novel, The Empire of Silence, ranked at A, but the other five main novels placed at A+. The novellae, The Lesser Devil and Queen amid Ashes, both made A-, while the side novel (The Dregs of Empire) and all three short story collections ended up at A. Despite greater than half of the individual entries placing lower, I gave the overall series A+ both because the main novels comprised the majority of the reading time and because even the relatively weaker parts served a much more intriguing whole. Imperial Radch: This one is interesting, as the first entry (Ancillary Justice) made B+ while the other two in the trilogy both made A- since they were noticeably better reading experiences. But despite two of the three entries ranking higher, it didn't seem to carry a coherent thread that justified it actually being a series, beyond literal story elements. I enjoyed Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy, but the trilogy as a whole felt like less than the sum of its parts.

The Thirty-Year Itch
When I was a young boy, I used to think that even twenty years was a lifetime – thirty was a millennium. When I turned thirty, I had the sinister feeling that I would have to grow up, start behaving maturely and that my young, green and careless days would be naturally terminated as instantaneously as my twenties.
As it happens, looking back for three decades – my thirties were possibly more enjoyable, along with the realisation that – as the meme suggests – “Don’t grow up, it’s a trap!” So, turning back the clock to the year of 1989; an unbelievably pivotal year, not only for its eventful happenings, good and bad; but for the long-term change for the world.
Globally, we had the start of crumbling dictatorships and old regimes as the “Iron Curtain” began to flake. Romania’s overthrowing of its communist president, Nicolae Ceausescu and overhaul of the old communist republic, the smoother Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia and even more famously – the majestically powerful opening of the Berlin Wall, ending one of the biggest divisions of the twentieth century, starting the reuniting of what we now know as Germany.
From the eyes of a naïve, small-town boy from Wales who had two passions – sport and music, this particular year was an eye-opening door to wowing, new worlds and understanding heartache in a cruel world. In the sporting sense, it should have been another year remembered for success and silverware for my teams Llanelli RFC and Liverpool FC. Tragically, the events in Sheffield on April 15th, 1989 would change the landscape of years to come for my Merseyside second home after the loss of ninety-six lives at Hillsborough. With only a month to go until the anniversary of that colossal tragedy, I’d only like to think of Liverpool as a city more solidified through its guts, grit and togetherness ever since.
Not only did the injustice, corruption and governmental evil epitomise the darker days of Thatcherite Britain and its inappropriate old guard of politicians and so-called leaders; but the legacy of loss and undermanagement in football changed how sport was facilitated, law was conducted – and how Liverpool and a city and as a football club – was both seen and run. Solidarity and deep doggedness from the Justice for the 96 team is something which I have grown, supported and seen – and wholeheartedly admired from Anne Williams, Margaret Aspinall and Trevor Hicks and all of their league of big, fighting hearts. Finally, some justice was seen two years ago – but did not replace those lost.
This would be something which also deeply personified but affected one of my first heroes, Sir Kenny Dalglish. As much as it makes me proud to see him acknowledged in being knighted for his compassionate work in the city’s communities as well as for the football club, his career as our manager was torn apart by this maelstrom, forcing him to resign less than two years later. Probably my most memorable flashback of the year was watching the horror unfold on my grandparents’ old television on that fateful day. If 1989 produced some vintage wines in the way of the aforementioned freedom around the world – this one was a poisonous drop.
On a more positive sporting note, while this was the height of passion in old Welsh rugby days – pre-Hillsborough’s standing areas meaning you could fit way, way over capacity in each stadium; I remember sitting as a ball boy in the Scarlets matches on frosty, cold nights with what must have been around 20,000 people watching derby matches in a stadium which only held 10,800 people. Possibly the link of two happenings as a ball boy was being interviewed by a New Zealand TV crew, as I was wearing an All Blacks jersey on the side of the pitch one evening – as a precursor to their tour in October 1989. Meeting the squad – one of the best teams (even to this day) I have ever seen, the day after they beat Llanelli 11-0 the previous day. Sir John Kirwan, the towering winger signed his autograph in my little old book with “Go For It”, leaving me open-mouthed, as if I’d met a god.
In culture, my most-watched movie (apart from Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope) in cinemas was released in June 1989, among the most memorable of marketing campaigns I can remember as a child. Tim Burton’s Batman was something which I can honestly say – changed my life. I watched it four times in cinemas, then countless times when released on VHS later that year. The soundtrack by Prince, the score by Danny Elfman as well as the gothic darkness were elements with which I identified, more so than Spider-Man, after collecting tens of comics as a younger kid. It began a lifetime of slight obsession with the DC Comics character – which only petered out once Zac Snyder started making (and tarring) the Caped Crusader films with his green screen only style.
Furthermore to the Prince soundtrack, as it was a world of far fewer musical genres back then; I was a Hip-Hop child. It was a time of mullets, soft rock and heavy metal along the mainstream music world – so discovering Hip-Hop in ’87 was something which kept me a bit one-eyed (or eared) as far as music went. 1989, it can be argued – was the best vintage year for the genre. Before the USA’s absurdly possessive copyright laws came into effect, we heard a year of sublime releases. Genre-expanding, sample-tastic albums, using the essence of Hip-Hop’s DJ styles – cutting pieces of tracks into new grooves were extending this brand of music method with new sub-genre styles. After years of Gangster Rap and politically charged messages from bands such as Ice-T, NWA and Public Enemy, a new wave of artists with alternate points to make had arrived, as did a segway from the underground to commercial hip-hop via some huge hits (Tone Loc, Neneh Cherry and so on).
This week holds significance as the thirty-year anniversary of the release of one of my most influential albums. My copy of De La Soul’s “3 Feet High And Rising” became one of my school year’s most passed-around tapes. Along with this fresh piece of genius (which incidentally cost the band more money because of the samples used, than made them cash – and which they are currently battling with Tommy Boy Records for being finally released digitally), we were blessed with rap pearls such as Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique, Young MC’s Stone Cold Rhymin’, Queen Latifah’s  All Hail The Queen, 3rd Bass’s The Cactus Album….the list goes on. London’s Mixmaster supreme DJ Yoda even agrees with me on this!
Tumblr media
Agreed, as DJ Yoda mentioned, there would definitely be some degree of personal nostalgia, vis-à-vis the albums which saw your personal growth and happy memories, but also the longevity of these album releases, as well as significance at the time. Latifah’s giant step for women in hip-hop, music’s expansion to new land and social equality through the softer messages of new types of rapping, following the domination of ‘Gangsta Rap’ and political bravery in the previous few years.
One massive encounter in connection with this brand of music – was seeing the DMC Technics DJ Mixing Championship for the first time, on the television. Despite it not becoming my selected style of mixing material years later, this is where it all started for me. Cutmaster Swift was the first non-American to win the title, but it was the imprint on my mind of analogue mixing brilliance which pushed me further into records – and what can be done with them.
At the time of this all happening, a new wave of music had begun. One of which I may have seen snippets on Top Of The Pops via certain tracks – in fact one which is now on my wall, after it was number 1 in the charts that year. L’il Louis’s French Kiss sounded like an excuse for “rudies” in a song to a fourteen-year-old heathen sheltered lad. After listening to Ice-T and especially Public Enemy’s Fight The Power – rebellion at the time for me was listening to lots of wise uprising, occasionally violent lyrics with lots of swearing and lots of putting White American policies to the ethical sword. It was five years later I caught the club-bug - and discovered House Music properly. But in 1989, it was blowing up as a scene. The effects of raves in Britain and the USA, not to mention the early stages of the club DJ superstar was catching headlines, being targeted by police and the tabloid press – with a late-eighties revamp of punk’s rebellious anti-establishment stance via electronic music and the drug Ecstasy. It was such a big year on so many levels.
Tumblr media
Finally, in other news – let’s have a look at what quirky little differences or nuances our kids would be baffled by – or at least raising eyebrows towards. In 1989, Madonna released the highly-anticipated, then controversial “Like A Prayer” video (for depicting Jesus as a person of colour) via a Pepsi commercial when we only had four TV channels in Britain. Now, we anticipate when she will finally call it a day. It’s not as if the royalties dried up a few years ago, is it?
Adverts were good. I rest my case (click on link).

Mullets and Shell Suits. *twitches uncontrollably*
*twitches uncontrollably again as Australia – proudly – announces mullets are back*
Tumblr media
Dear Generations Y and Z, there is a reason these garments have not been worn for over twenty-five years. This is called ‘not being a chav or bogan’. I hope you can understand why it would be dangerous to revisit this abhorrent get-up.
To close – in 1989, Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, or what we now know as the Internet. You wouldn’t be reading this now without it.
 Cheers.

A conversation with John Barnes, Part Two: His Anfield culture shock and learning the ‘Liverpool Way’

A conversation with John Barnes, Part Two: His Anfield culture shock and learning the ‘Liverpool Way’
Tumblr media
In 1987, Liverpool Football Club were beginning yet another rebuild. They had won a league and FA Cup double in 1986, but the 1986/87 season ended in disappointment.
Liverpool finished runners up to Everton in the league and were beaten by Arsenalin the League Cup final. It was a rare trophy-less season compounded by the impending loss of Ian Rush.
Rush and Kenny Dalglish had formed one of the deadliest partnership in football throughout the ’80s. However, in 1987 Kenny had completed his transition to the manager’s position, hanging up his boots in the process.
Rush had departed for Juventus. The King would have to refashion his empire.
In a rare move for Liverpool, who had built their success on adding one or two players every couple of years to a team of all-stars, Dalglish signed four new attacking players in one season.
Those men were John Aldridge, Ray Houghton, Peter Beardsley and, of course, John Barnes.
They would click instantly and become the rocket fuel that propelled perhaps the most flamboyant and mesmeric Liverpool team of all time.
Leaving Watford
So far in our conversation we’ve covered Barnes’ formative years and his rise to prominence at Vicarage Road. Now it’s time to turn our attentions to his move to Anfield. Barnes picks up the story:
“Liverpool came in for me in the January, but [Watford manager] Graham Taylor called me into his office and told me I would be joining them in the summer.”
I ask Barnes about claims, in Alex Ferguson’s autobiography, that Dave Bassett, who succeeded Taylor at the end of the 1986/87 season, had offered the United manager the chance to sign him and that he had declined the opportunity.
Ferguson is said to have rued his decision, given it had extended Liverpool’s dominance of English football for a few more years.
Barnes is dismissive of the idea that joining United was ever a possibility.
“I’d already signed for Liverpool before Bassett took over,” he said. “I never played under Bassett. I don’t know. He might have said to Alex Ferguson, ‘do you want to sign John Barnes?’ But it was already arranged for me to go to Liverpool.
“I only met Dave Bassett once. I was going to Liverpool in two weeks. He invited me to his house to say good luck. He never mentioned Manchester United. It would never have happened.”
Liverpool and Watford had agreed a fee of £900,000. That was clearly a huge sum of money in 1987. Although, it was short of the transfer record at that time. I point out that, given Trevor Francis had become the first £1 million player in 1979, the Reds had got themselves a bargain.
“Yes, but what you have to realise that Peter Beardsley signed shortly after me for £1.6 million, which was the biggest transfer fee ever. Trevor Francis went for £1 million in 1979 but nobody had paid more than that since. It’s more the case that the Francis deal in ’79 was exceptional.”
Nevertheless the idea of snapping up a player of Barnes’ calibre for under £1 million is remarkable. The subject of his value is discussed in the film, Poetry in Motion.
Former England team-mate Viv Anderson muses on what a player like Barnes would fetch in the current market.
Given the benchmark set by the Paul Pogba transfer, he suggests, the bidding for John Barnes would have to start at £100 million.
A Northern Culture Shock
So, the next stage of his career beckoned and a move north had been sealed. I suggest that despite having spent his life in Jamaica and the south of England, he would surely have known all about the history and qualities of his new club.
However, I was interested to know what his thoughts and perceptions of Liverpool the city were ahead of the move.
“None whatsoever. Playing for Watford you’d travel to away games on the Friday and come back on the Saturday night.
“In the south they have perceptions about the north. They talk about flat caps and outside toilets, so you do have that misconception. It’s kind of like when you talk about racism and what you’re told about other people.
“You know you talk about the north-south divide and down south they have this superior attitude towards northerners. In many ways they probably still do. But, obviously understanding how discrimination works, I never believed any of that.
“The thing is, I knew a lot of northern footballers. For me they were probably more lively than the southerners, always laughing and joking. So I was looking forward to it.”
Nevertheless, the player was in for a culture shock of sorts when he arrived at Anfield. In the film he describes the simplicity of the Liverpool way, which had remained largely unchanged since the days of Bill Shankly.
I put it to him that the routine at Melwood must have seemed overly simplistic compared to his time under Graham Taylor. Barnes goes further, stating:
“Yes simple and, as far as I was concerned at the time, backwards I must admit. At Watford we had psychologists, nutritionists and top-notch methods. At Liverpool they were just playing five-a-side football.
“But after a while, you get to learn Bill Shankly’s way, that he got into the training, was much more forward-thinking and much more advanced than any other team. But at the time, to me, it seemed disorganised.”
I mention that I’d also heard other former players describing how often the advice from the Boot Room, whenever a game was going badly, would be simply, ‘sort it out’. Barnes agrees.
“Yes. Work it out for yourselves. Liverpool always signed players that they knew over a period of time had the intelligence to play football. Yes you had to have ability, but you had to understand the game.”
How Barnes Was Made For Liverpool
Barnes clearly fitted the bill. This is a theme repeated throughout the film, with many of Barnes’ former team-mates and coaches attesting to his ‘footballing brain’. It was a key factor in enabling him to reinvent himself as a central midfielder as his blistering pace began to fade.
“Nowadays they sign players after six good games. I played at Watford for six years and four years for England. Liverpool always had senior players who could help the younger players, who in turn would become experienced.”
It was a formula that served the Reds well for decades, as they built one great team after another. They’d simply top up the talent pool every couple of seasons.
But, what was so special about the coaching, the tactics?
“What happens as a coach is that you train and prepare and you come up with tactics. Unfortunately, football doesn’t work like that. It’s fine, all well and good, until you start the game and the opposition do something you didn’t think they would, and the tactics aren’t working.
“What do you do? Are you going to wait until half-time, for the manager to do it, or, do you look to the bench and say ‘what do we do? We weren’t told about this’?
“At Liverpool the coaches would say to you, ‘I’m not telling you what to do. Work it out for yourself’. And what that does, what helps you to do that, is the experience you have.
“That was a culture shock, because Graham Taylor, for 90 minutes, told us exactly what to do. So what I didn’t know was that in six years Liverpool had seen in me that I was able to translate that into what Liverpool wanted me to play.
“So, Liverpool saw things in players that you didn’t know you had yourself.
“I never thought I was a Liverpool player. Watford played a long-ball game. Liverpool were completely different, but they saw something in me.”
So, was this part of a deliberate philosophy by Liverpool? Did they simply recruit intelligent footballers, who could fit into their methodology and way of coaching? Is that the secret that lay behind their dominance over almost three decades?
“Oh, Liverpool picked players who couldn’t do that. But, then they didn’t last. It wasn’t as if Liverpool always picked the right players all the time.
“If you couldn’t do it, you’d be quickly found out and you’d be got rid of, or you wouldn’t be in the team.”
Here, Barnes gives a fascinating and revealing insight into the secrets behind Liverpool’s unparalleled success.
The philosophy that drove the club to domestic and European glory was built on the pillars of football intelligence, understanding the simplicity of the game and a ruthless streak that ensured only the very best were fit to wear the shirt.
In the 1987/88 season, Liverpool and Barnes proved themselves to be the very best in land. They would sweep all before them and play majestic football.
