first chapter, very nervvy. also every chapter is based on a song i think fits them. this one is based on whose you are by jake minch!!

"i really want this to work.." i mumble, half-drunk in the apartment, looking over at pete, the sun setting through the windows making him look almost golden. i want to tell him how beautiful he looks in this light.

"hm..? who?" he turns and looks over at me, our knees are touching and it's sending tingles throughout my whole body.

"i've tried to tell you this so many times.." i lean my head back on the back of the couch and turn my head and look at him taking a breath.

"i'm sorry," he looks confused.

"no.. but you don't know what it's like, man.." our eyes meet.

his eyes crinkle as he smiles. "trust me, there's been a lot of girls that i've fallen for that didn't feel the same.."

"no.. pete," i look away and sit up, leaning my elbows on my knees, my head in my hands. "this is.. different," i can't seem to find the words to tell him. "it's not.. a girl." i run my hand through my hair and stand up. i don't want to see the look on his face.

"oh.. oh." i can feel his eyes on me as i go to the fridge to grab another beer.

"i'm really sorry, i know i should've told you earlier, but i just couldn't.." i finally turn around and look at him. i scan his face, searching for any emotion on his face. the cold beer in my hand is the only thing keeping me grounded at this point.

"who is it..?" he finally asks, a small smile on his face— relief flowing through my body.

"yeah, i'll tell you all about him when i'm dead." i chuckle and rub the back of my neck, looking down before meeting his eyes. it's taking almost everything in me not to tell him how i've been feeling about him for months. "you're not.. mad?"

"what? oh my god, berg. no, no, no.." pete automatically comes towards me, his hand reaching out for my upper arm. i want to pull away from him. to stop myself from falling further and further for him. but i can't, i melt into his touch and look at him. "who you are– who you're interested in.. it doesn't matter to me, berg.. you're still my best friend. unless you start hanging out with your new boyfriend more than me," he chuckles but i can tell he's a little serious.

"thanks, man.." i say, his hand lingering on my shoulder. "and i would never," i smile, diverting my gaze to the beer in my hand as his leaves my arm. the condensation already settling around my fingers as i pop the tab to the can. “you want another one?” i ask him, gesturing to the beer in my hand.

“yeah, sure.” he smiles softly and goes back to the couch. i open the fridge, my brain finally registering that i just came out to my best friend, i know i can never tell him that he's the one i was talking about, but at least he knows now. the feeling of the cold air from the fridge hitting my face grounding me yet again.

sharon bursts through the door making me jump and slam the door to the fridge before turning on my heel to look at her. “jesus, sharon. ever heard of knocking?” i walk over to the couch, tossing petes beer in the air. i can’t help but watch as his fingers wrap around the can when he catches it. 

sharon stomps to the bathroom before quickly returning with a roll of toilet paper. “how many times do i have to tell you guys to buy your own toilet paper?” she scoffs. i watch as she leaves and i sit on the couch next to pete, my arm resting on the back of the couch behind his head. 

pete glances over at me, “are you going to tell her?” he asks before taking a sip of his beer as if it were a casual thing.

“i don't know.. i mean if i ever get into a serious relationship with a guy– i guess i would have to. but right now i don't see the point.. you know?” i grab the remote, having to remove my arm from behind him.

“yeah, i guess you’re right,’ i feel his gaze on me, “but seriously.. do i get to know anything about him?” he asks, his gaze shifting as i lean back. 

i flip through the channels, “not yet.. i mean i've known that i’ve liked guys since high school but its never been like this–”

he’s still looking at me, “yeah, i get that. just know that i’m here when you’re ready.” his tone makes me wish i could tell him all about how i’ve been falling in love with him since the day we met.

we spend the rest of the night just watching tv and i end up with my arm fully around him. i swallow hard as he lays his head on my shoulder, i look down at him and watch as his chest rises and falls, i notice the soft snores escaping his mouth.

i glance over at the clock a little while later to check the time to see it’s 10:43 p.m. “pete..” i move my arm from around him and his head falls onto my chest before he leans back up disrupted by his change in position.

“oh, sorry,” he grumbles, rubbing sleep from his eyes and standing up. he looks down at me. “what time is it?” he yawns, grabs the empty beer cans from the coffee table, and walks over to the trash before tossing them in.

“10:45.” i say, glancing at the clock again.

“dont you have class in the morning?” he turns around and i find it impossible to look away from him as he runs his fingers through his hair. how he looks in our living room when it's completely dark and just the television is shining on him; his eyes seem to reflect the light just the right amount for me to get lost in them.

“oh– no, not until the afternoon,” i stumble over my words, and if he asks about it i'd just blame the alcohol, but he doesn't. 

“alright, i got an early one tomorrow so i’ll try not to wake you,” pete says as i stand up to stretch and yawn, i go over to the kitchen to pour a glass of water and notice he still hasn't gone to his bedroom yet. i turn around and he pulls me into a hug “thank you for telling me,” i stand in shock for a second before wrapping my arms around him, letting myself have this moment, sinking into his touch. 

“of course, man..” i say once he's pulled away from me, his hands still lingering on my shoulder. “you're my best friend.” i cringe at the words.

“g’night, berg..” he slaps my shoulder softly before pulling away and running his hand through his hair.

“night, pete.” i watch as he goes into his room and i turn to lean over the sink, letting out a breath.

Minka’s memoir dropped today and she does speak quite a bit about her relationship with Taylor during Friday Night Lights. Here are a few anecdotes from the book, but I’d encourage you to check it out because there is more I have not shared. 

On meeting Taylor while filming the pilot: 

“I had just gone through the betrayal with Sean and here was this guy who was so beautiful to look at with this quirky Canadian accent. The chemistry between us was intense. I had a crush on him immediately. He was funny and adventurous and didn’t take himself too seriously. It was as if he had no idea how gorgeous he was. He was so humble and down to earth, it sort of disarmed whatever pretense you might have about someone so pretty. He made me and everyone else laugh constantly.

Flirting and laughing with him on set and off became the sweet salve to my recently injured heart. We fell in lust fast and hard. I would have told you back then that we were madly in love. Mad, yes. But love it was not. We were infatuated with each other. I had no idea how to give or receive love back then.” 

On Pete Berg warning them both not to get involved with one another:

“One day, Peter Berg asked Taylor and me to meet him for breakfast. Taylor and I had woken up together that morning, but for the sake of appearances, we decided to arrive at the restaurant at different times, very pointedly not together. Pete had summoned us to give us a warming. He could see the chemistry between us. Looking back now, I’m pretty sure everyone could, though we thought we were slick.” 

On their on again off again relationship:

“Since I didn’t know anyone in town besides my castmates, I was very lonely and would get back together with him to avoid being so isolated. Of course, that wasn’t the only reason we got back together...I loved being with him. It’s just that the good only lasted so long before our incompatibility reared its ugly head. We ended up getting back together and breaking up more times than I can count. At that time in our lives it was almost impossible for us not to be consumed by the chemistry we shared....you’re convinced that if you have this kind of chemistry, surely you’re meant to be together.”

in 2021, it became a meme in the ryan stan twitter community, and people tagged gordan ramsay in the tweet, asking his opinion on ryan’s cooking.

first male model for mac:

the story goes that in the fever era, the makeup company mac offered ryan a spot to be their first male model. unfortunately, he declined. according to the comments on a livejournal post i found, ryan discussed this in a 2006 spin magazine interview [i]. there were scans of the interview, but sadly, they’re not available, like most pictures on lj. it hasn’t been archived either.

the same commenter says that article doesn’t specifically mention mac, though. mac did offer ryan free products, but he doesn’t say if he accepted them [i].

so, it’s unsure if ryan was offered to be mac’s male model (unless there’s another source i’ve missed) or another brand’s. either way he turned it down. my guess is that the mac idea came from the fact that he used mac’s products back then.

beef with pete wentz:

after the split, brendon got pete in the divorce.

in a MTV interview that ryan did in 2009, it says “…he wishes Urie and Smith well and still considers them both to be his friends…The same cannot be said, however, about his former boss -- Decaydance Records honcho/ Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz -- who seems to have clearly aligned himself with the Urie/Smith camp following the split" [ii].

in the same interview, ryan specifically says:

"I haven't spoken to him in a while, since this happened. I guess I've been meaning to call him back. He called me, but I've missed a lot of phone calls this week," Ross said. "We're not sure [whether Ross' and Walker's new band will be on Wentz's Decaydance Records]. I'll have to talk to him, but obviously from what's happening online, I think he's ... he's written a lot about them. I don't know if they're working together on their stuff. I'm not really sure, but it's been awhile since we've spoken. It's strange. It's kind of weird" [ii].

the author of the article speculates that ryan and pete’s friendship is over [ii]. i can’t find the source for this, nor can i remember what the specific comments were, but i swear that pete did make some shady comments about ryan at one point.

however, it does seem that their relationship is not on negative terms currently. in 2016, pete tweeted this and this about ryan [iii] [iv]. also, this year (2023), pete mentioned ryan in a video fall out boy posted of pete reviewing his old fashion! you can watch it here:

this is a conspiracy that ryan is lying about his height.

one piece of evidence was that brendon is 5’9, meaning ryan would be 2 inches taller than him. however, in a lot of photos they look to be relatively the same height.

the other piece is that multiple fans who have met ryan said that compared to their own heights, he can’t be 5’11. i don’t have specific sources of people saying that, but i know it was discourse on twitter at one point.

West Duchovny on Her Breakout Role in Netflix's Painkiller | Who What Wear UK

Much to the satisfaction of her Hollywood A-list parents Téa Leoni and David Duchovny, she instead put her focus into academia with plans to study pre-med after high school. But then that pesky spring semester play came into the picture senior year. Duchovny said something to Berg that she had never ever said before: “I was like, ‘Pete, I want you to know that I know that I can do this.’” Her confidence sold him, and she booked the role a couple of weeks later.

For someone filled with so much self-doubt, it was the validation Duchovny needed. “So that’s what I meant,” she adds. “It was so unexpected. It felt so out of the realm of reality, and the fact that they saw me and took a chance on me and trusted me with such an amazing and complicated character, I’m forever in debt. It still blows my mind to think about it.”

i stare at sharon as we sit on the couch, realizing i need to tell someone or it's going to eat me up inside. "shar.." i start.

"yeah, what's up?" she replies calmly. 

"i need to tell you something..” i pick at the skin around my thumb as i look to the ground.

"oh.." she turns all her attention to me in that moment. "i'm listening."

"i think.. no. i know.. i'm in love with- with pete.." i shift my gaze and scan her face to find any sort of sign of what she's thinking or feeling. 

"oh.. berg," she pulls me in for a hug, i lets out a sigh of relief, finally getting it off my chest.

"you're not.. mad?" i pull away but she keeps her hands on my arms.

"no, berg.. why would i be mad?" she tilts her head slightly.

"because.. pete's a guy.. i'm a guy, i shouldn't even feel this way.." i swallow hard.

"hey, what? no.. berg, i'm not mad. you can't control the way you feel.." sharon rubs my upper arms.

"i just really needed to tell someone.. i don't think ive ever felt this way before," i sigh. “i mean yeah there have been girls i've dated and i did like them.. but, i don't know. with pete it's different.” 

“it's okay, how long have you known?” she asks me, removing her hand from my shoulder.

i shrug, “i don't know, i think i always have been, but i didn't figure out what it really was until a few months ago.. but i’ve always known that i liked guys.. like i've never been in a serious relationship with one but in highschool there were a few guys i would fool around with..”

“yeah, yeah.. so- like are you gay? bi..?” she looks nervous, almost like she's scared to say the wrong thing.

“i guess i never really thought about it.. i've never really felt the need to put a label on it,”

“got it,” she says with an understanding nod. “i'm really happy for you.” she smiles. 

“yeah?”

“yes, berg. i've never seen you as happy as you are when you’re with him.” she smiles.

i let out a sigh of relief, “thanks, shar..”

“have you thought about if youre going to tell him?” she asks.

i pick at my fingernails, “i mean.. the other day we were talking and i brought up how there was this guy that i liked.. but– i didn't tell him that you know.. it was him.” i let out a soft chuckle.

“oh? how’d he take it?” she furrows her brows together.

i smile, “not bad.. he was really supportive about it and didn't treat me like i was any different.” 

“that’s good,” she smiles.

i sigh, shifting my gaze to the ground. “what am i supposed to do, sharon?” i ask, looking back up at her. “i mean– he doesn't feel the same, i know he doesn’t, but i don't want to lose him. he’s my best friend,” i run a hand through my hair.

she looks at me with raised eyebrows, “you don't know that..”

my eyes widen, “what? do you know something i don’t?” i turn my whole body towards her, bringing my right leg up and leaning it against the couch.

This summer I had the pleasure of photographing psychologist Gayle Berg for @bostonu. In addition to her practice in rehabilitative psychology, she has worked for decades as a mental health advocate to improve and expand access to quality mental health care. She and others lobbied Congress for equal treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorders in insurance plans and in 2008, Congress passed the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equality Act. Her work and dedication has made mental illness less stigmatized and less discriminated against in the workplace and in insurance. Taylor Kitsch Says Signing onto ‘Painkiller’ with Pete Berg Was a ‘No-Brainer’

The Friday Night Lights alum digs deep to play a man addicted to opioids in the new limited series.

For Taylor Kitsch, joining the cast of the scripted limited series Painkiller was a “no-brainer” for several personal reasons. One, it was another chance to collaborate with showrunner Pete Berg, who worked with Kitsch on his breakout role as Tim Riggins in the 2006 football drama Friday Night Lights.

“He’s like an older brother to me,” Kitsch said of Berg on the set of Painkiller in early 2022, prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. “We’ve been through a lot, and when I got this call, it was quite simple, to be honest.” After Friday Night Lights, Kitsch and Berg teamed up on the 2012 blockbuster Battleship and again on 2013’s Lone Survivor. “You already have that trust,” said Kitsch, “and the shorthand is really important as well.”

That trust was necessary in grappling with the heavy subject matter of Painkiller, a fictionalized retelling of some of the origins of the opioid epidemic that is believed to have caused over 300,000 American overdose deaths over the last two decades. The six-episode series hones in on an ensemble of characters to tell a broader story: Richard Sackler (Matthew Broderick), the billionaire senior executive at Purdue Pharma who pushes the wide distribution of opiates for profit; Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), an investigator at the US Attorney’s office who chases down answers about OxyContin; Shannon Schaeffer (West Duchovny), a recent college grad who’s recruited to Purdue to sell the drugs directly to doctors; and Glen Kryger (Kitsch), a mechanic who, after getting injured on the job, is prescribed OxyContin, which traps him in a vicious cycle of addiction.

Although Glen is a wholly fictional character, he’s the series’ main face of OxyContin’s devastating effects — another reason why Kitsch felt a personal responsibility in portraying Glen’s struggle. Kitsch has watched people close to him fight addiction. “Man, it’s pretty close to me, this thing,” he said. “Unfortunately, I think we’re all one degree away from someone who’s an addict.”

Authentically capturing Glen’s attempts at detoxing as he hides the seriousness of his addiction from his wife Lily (Carolina Bartczak) and stepson Tyler (Jack Mulhern) required some creative risk-taking from both Kitsch and Berg. Berg’s directing style, which Kitsch knows well, is dynamic and at times improvisational to keep the performances raw and real. “Sometimes he tries to get you out of your own head or your own way,” said Kitsch. “You don’t get faulted for mistakes — he just pushes you left or right. He keeps the set very alive and you move quick.”

The conversation about the opioid epidemic is far from over, as everyone involved in Painkiller understands, and Kitsch hopes his portrayal of Glen helps continue the conversation and remove some of the stigma and shame about addiction. “I’m very lucky to have served a lot of true stories and heavy things,” said Kitsch. “And this is right up there for me in the sense of purpose, of why I get to do what I do.”

Painkiller is now streaming on Netflix.
